So one night not too long ago I was sitting on my couch interneting and I started playing with search.twitter.com looking at the mass amounts of people posting photos to Twitter via Twitpic . I found the amount of photos getting uploaded astounding, at times close to 10 photos a second. But with that many photos getting posted every second its hard to visually comprehend, so I came up with an idea for an app, WHAM, Twitpic-viewer was conceived.

So using the Twitter API, I run a search for “twitpic.com”, return some JSON, parse it and loadin the photos.

I think it works pretty well, it is kinda like a train wreck though, you just can’t look away. Also be aware I don’t control the content, so odds are you will some nudity and other questionable content, enjoy!*I currently DO NOT limit how many images will be loaded in, so eventually it will crash your browser if you let it run long enough.

** joekromer.com is in no way affilated with twitpic.com

*** for those interested here is the source for twitpic-viewer.

We recently selected @matthewwithanm as the winner of the Flashpitt suggestion contest, he will receive a complimentary ticket to Flashpitt.

Prior to choosing a winner we had to decide, just that, how we were going to choose the winner. The obvious way would have been to print off everyones names, cut them up, put them in a hat and pick one. Since it is 2009 I figure I can do better than the analog way and I don’t have to risk trees, paper cuts, or loss of fingers (my scissor skills are not the best), so out comes flash and a 20 min code session begins.

I came up with this little gem, where you enter the number of entries you have and a number greater than or equal to 1. The application uses this number to select a random number to decide how many times the Math.random function is ran before the winner is selected.

i.e. say you put 50 in that section the Application grabs a random number between 1 and 50, say 44, then determines that the 44th random number selected will be the winner.

Test it out here.

I know it’s pretty lame but maybe it will help you in selecting a winner for some drawing your doing. Plus I wanted to post it so when I do another drawing for Flashpitt I can just use this one.

So I decided I was [...]

When making the switch to AS3 there are all kinds of problems we run into, one that I seem to deal with on a daily basis is navigating to a URL.

Back in AS2 it looked like this:

getURL("http://www.joekromer.com", "_self");

AS3 it looks like this:

var URLReq:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://www.joekromer.com");
try {
	navigateToURL(URLReq, "_self");
} catch (e:Error) {
	trace(e);
}

So I decided I was going to write a quick little class to make my life just a little bit easier. Now after you include my Navigate class all you have to do is call “Navigate.to()”. Of course you need to pass the URL to the function. The function also defaults the target to “_self”, but that can be changed by including whatever target you want.

The code in my class looks like this:

package com.joekromer{
	import flash.net.URLRequest;
	import flash.net.navigateToURL;

	public class Navigate{
 public function Navigate(url:String, target:String) {
 var URLReq:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url);
 try {
 navigateToURL(URLReq, target);
 } catch (e:Error) {
 trace("Oh noes you broke it = " + e);
 }
 }

 public static function to(url:String, target:String = "_self"):Navigate {
 return new Navigate(url, target);
 }
	}
}

With my class you can navigate to a url like this:

import com.joekromer.Navigate;
Navigate.to("http://www.joekromer.com", "_blank");

Download my class.

Example:
I have a Movie Clip in the Library where the “Export for ActionScript” box is checked and the class is called SomeAwesomeClass.

Before, I would reference this clip like this:

var clip:MovieClip = MovieClip(new SomeAwesomeClass());

or

var clip:MovieClip = MovieClip(new SomeAwesomeClass());

and would never get any sort of code hinting.

Now, I call it like this:

var clip:MovieClip = MovieClip(new (SomeAwesomeClass));

and who’s your uncle, goldenromDOTcom, it works!

Not really sure why it works this way, but it does, Happy coding!

I recently had the situation where I had to create an array of 25 random numbers from 0-24, but no number could be repeated in the array. So after a little bit of racking my brain I came up with this.

//create an array to hold the numbers
var numArray:Array = new Array(25);

// create an array to hold the used numbers
var usedNumArray:Array = new Array(25);

for (var i:int = 0; i <= 24; i++){
	pickNum(i);
}

// run fuctions to get a random number and put in it the array
function pickNum(i:Number){
	var num:Number;
	do{
 //set num to a random number between 0-24
 num = getRandNum();
 //set the numArray[i] to the random number
 numArray[i] = num;
 //make sure the number is a new number
	}while(usedNumArray[num]);
	//if its a new number set the usedNumArray[num] to true
	usedNumArray[num]=true;
	//trace it back to make sure it works
	if(i == 24){
	trace(numArray)
	}
}

// get random number
function getRandNum():Number{
	return Math.floor(Math.random()*25);
}

I don't know if its the best way to handle it but it works. If there is a better way please let me know.

I don’t know what the deal is but for some unknown reason when I get Twitter updates to my cell phone(Verizon Motorola RAZR V3m) if they include an “@” symbol anything after the “@” symbol doesn’t show up. The biggest problem with this is that most of the time when an “@” symbol is included in a tweet it is the first thing, therefore I get lots and lots of blank twitter updates. Which angers me to no extent, what does a person have to do around here to get some Twitter updates.

Just to make stuff clear I love me some Twitter and hate me some Verizon.

I just accepted a position at the corporate office of American Eagle Outfitters, here in Pittsburgh. I am really excited to get the opportunity to expand on my Flash development skills and while working at a publicly held company. Also I wanted to point out that in no way do I have any bad feelings towards New Perspective they are an awesome company with many great people working for them. I owe a lot of my developmental growth to Wayne, Ben and Val, as they have helped to get me where I am today! My resignation is bittersweet, but I’m excited about the many opportunities in my near future.

So like others out there I wanted to pulled in some entry’s from my Twitter feed. So I used their HTML/JavaScript Badge creator to do the dirty work for me. Which worked great but when I check the validation for my site I now had a bunch of errors.

This is what Twitter kicked out for me:

So it breaks for 2 main reasons, first you’ll notice that in the bottom line the script tag has text=”text/javascript” change this to type=”text/javascript” and lastly in the source of that same line http://twitter.com/s… r.json?callback=twitterCallback2&count=1. XHTML doesn’t like the “&” so change it to the proper way with & followed by amp;.

It should look like this:

That should do it, now it should validate at least XHTML Transitional, remember to flip out where is says “joekromer” in the JavaScript source for your Twitter name.

Enjoy!

Finally a slick way to pull a feed, any feed, in to your website. There is a lot of documentation behind this one but I figured I would release the source I used on my personal site.
Choose to include it or just put it in your head its up to you:

So any way thats the source which can pull in my blog, but your not going to want to do that, so I’ll step thought the things your going to want to change.

First your going to want to do is go to the Sign Up page for the Google AJAX Feed API and get your own key, which you should include in your head mine looked like this(Similar to the Google Map API key).

Like This:
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://www.google.com/jsapi?key=ABQIAA…nGw”></script&gt

Put your feed URL in place of my feed URL
var feed = new google.feeds.Feed(”YOUR URL HERE”);

I am pulling in the Title the Link and the Content Snippet which is the first 255 characters of the blog. Here is the page that tells you what all you can pull in.

Also your going to want to define how many entries get pulled in, by default it will pull the first 4 entries by add/changing this in your code you can define that.
feed.setNumEntries(3);

Last but not least create a DIV with the id = feed which is where the feed will get pulled into and style it up I already have 2 classes in the innerHTML called blogTitle and blogSnippet.

Here is the Google documentation which should help you get though any problems you may have.

Enjoy

You maybe asking yourself what is so special about this T-Post subscription? Well it is a subscription just like a magazine subscription but its for T-Shirts that are based on or inspired by current events! It is a little pricey for us outside of Sweden, 32 American dollars to be exact, on a semi good note the shipping is included in that price. I haven’t got my first issue yet but I can’t wait. Check out there back issues the designs are great!

My girlfriend and I are planing a trip to NYC in a few weeks, so I thought I would be fun to put together a map of places where we want to go. I decided to use the Google Maps API to pull it off, and it went a lot better than I had expected. The only real problem I ran into was trying to figure out what set of latitude and longitude to use for the place I wanted.

Here is a little walk through of how I did it.

First go to maps.google.com

Second put in a location lets say The New York Stock Exchange for this one.

Third select the location you want, in this example it is “A”

Fourth click “more info >” and you should get a screen that looks like this.

Fifth click “link to this page” and you will get a screen that looks like this.

Finally go up to the address bar it should look something like this: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=New+York+Stock+Exchange&sll=40.709402,-74.010086&sspn=0.027456,0.041885&ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=40.710524,-74.010129&spn=0.006864,0.010471&om=1&iwloc=A&iwd=1&cid=40706450,-74011086,16559247629889083090&dtab=0

Now just look through the URL for the latitude and longitude with out a period in it. We want this guy: 40706450,-74011086. Now add a period and put it in the JavaScript where the latitude and longitude go and your done! Final latitude and longitude:40.706450,-74.011086

Some Extra Info:

Feel free to check out the one I made here, also here is my source.
Some good documentation:

I have stumbled upon possibly the greatest site EVER, talk about applying to a demographic! I laughed, I cried(because I laughed so hard), I laughed some more. First I would like to give props to the company(I’m still in search of who it is) that pitched this concept to Philips. This is a great concept, truly original. So here’s to you company who pitch this idea you have Balls(porcelain smooth ones). I would like to give Philips the most props for having the concept produced. Being a designer I know most of my greatest concepts do not get produced because clients tend to sway towards the conservative side. They want to stay away from things that are fresh, controversial, edgy and offensive. Philips on the other hand grabbed the concept by the horns and road it for a full 8 seconds.

Hopefully sites like this will inspire more people to push the limits of video based sites, because with great content you can produce some seriously entertaining sites.

On another note with the content that did make it on this site, I want to know what didn’t.

So here is the link to the site www.shaveeverywhere.com

And proof that this is good advertising, I’m going to buy a Philips Body Groom right now!

So all this hype I’ve heard about Cocaine, The Energy Drink, I wanted to get some. After two failed attempts of going to NYC to find some, I broke down and ordered it off eBay.

$74.90 and 4 days later I received my case of Cocaine or as I like to call it a “Kilo”.

So I crack(no pun intended) open a can.

Here are a list of taste/sensations in chronological order.

1. Energy drink taste, plus berry-ness, much like the Sobe No Fear Energy Drink.
2. A burning sensation isolated to the back of my throat.
3. A numbness of my mouth and throat.
4. Loads and loads of ENERGY.

Over all I rate it very good for an energy drink! I would say it offers the most bang for your buck being rated 3.5 times more powerful than Red Bull and costing me around $3.12 a can I would say it is well worth it.

Here is a photo of the can.

and the case.

Also feel free to check out the site, unfortunately it is only sold in certain areas, New York, Los Angles and some spots in Florida. It is also available on Amazon but carries a huge shipping and handling fee.

I ordered from user ulci2004 on eBay who was very professional and fast!

PNG’s have been one of my favorite things lately in web design. They are supported in FireFox and IE 7 nativity. They are also supported in IE5.5+ as long as you use PNG Behavior. The biggest problem I have been running into is file size, today I was trying out Macromedia FireWorks (Soon to be Adobe FireWorks as it is going to replace ImageReady in CS3) and found that it can do 8 Bit PNG’s with alpha transparencies which is amazing cause it seriously cut down my file sizes.

In some cases I went from a 350KB 24 Bit PNG to a 40KB 8 Bit PNG with little loss in quality.

Check out this [Link] to see what I mean.
