Today we’re talking about colors. The primary colors are Red, Yellow, and Blue and you can mix them into any other color. On computers we use Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) rather than RYB. On printers, however, we use CMYK. Yes folks, 3 colors on computer screens and 4 colors on printers.

Web browsers couldn’t display CMYK images, instead they’d just show a broken image icon. That happened in my job just recently. Newer browsers can make the transition without a problem, but our good friend MSIE6 is still lacking…

Joe The Green Guy: A practical approach to living cleaner, greener, and more efficiently — without being labeled a tree hugger.

Today we talk about source control, or version control of your source code. In large companies we generally have some sort of source control that’s already set up that we just live with. Smaller shops (or even big companies with small development groups) and individuals probably don’t have source control.

Source control, for those of you who don’t know, gives you the ability to check out a copy of the code and work on it, then check in your changes and integrate them back into the source repository. This allows not only multiple developers to work on the same codebase at the same time, it also allows for version tracking and some other cool things. At work I use Subversion, with Tortoise SVN as my client (we tried Ankh and didn’t like it).

Once you’ve checked in your code into the repository you can have a Continuous Integration robot in place that you can configure to compile the integrated code, run unit tests, check for missing files, file off emails (or tweets), and even ZIP and FTP your project to your testing server. Continuous integration is kinda way out of the scope of this episode, so we’ll leave it at that.

In addition to just source code (html, js, css, cs, aspx, ascx, etc.), I also include build docs, images, photoshop documents, pdfs, and other documents related to a specific build of the project. This helps me keep a record of all the change requests and source documents as well, even though they’re not included in the compiled project.

In this episode I also add a shout-out to my good friend and former co-worker, Mike “Push Master” Dopp.

The topic for this website centers around knowing your audience. Before you write a single line of code or content take the time to write down a few “people” who you think will be viewing your content. If you are creating a new site you may just have to wing this, if you have existing content you may be able to use some pre-existing demographics to come up with more “realistic” people who actually visit your site (not just people who you think visit your site). We’ll talk more about that in the next podcast.

Having an audience in mind helps you craft your message for those personas and helps you craft your code to present the content in a better format for your audience.

Take a listen to the podcast and leave your feedback in the comments below.

The topic for this website centers around knowing your audience. Before you write a single line of code or content take the time to write down a few "people" who you think will be viewing your content. If you are creating a new site you may just have to wing this, if you have existing content you may be able to use some pre-existing demographics to come up with more "realistic" people who actually visit your site (not just people who you think visit your site). We'll talk more about that in the next podcast.

Having an audience in mind helps you craft your message for those personas and helps you craft your code to present the content in a better format for your audience.
