Soko Tunggal Mosque

The majority of Yogyakarta people’s religion is Islam. So, there are a lot of mosque was built in around Yogyakarta. One of the great mosques is Soko Tunggal Mosque. Soko Tunggal Mosque lies in the south of the path, which leads to the Taman Sari Pesanggrahan (a rest-house).

This mosque is called Soko Tunggal because of its single pillar. This mosque built in 28th February 1973 by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX. This mosque built in honor of suhada or heroes that fall in battle opposes Dutch army in battle that known General Attack 1 March. Different from other Javanese traditional buildings, the pillar of the mosque is supported by a bar of stone called “umpak”. It is interesting to know that the umpak used to be the one to support the pillar of the old-Mataram kingdom in the Islamic period. Nglanggeran Hills are hills at Gunungkidul Residence that has beautiful view. This hills placed at the north side of Gunungkidul Residence in direction of Klaten Residence, Middle Java. This place was not far away from the center of Yogyakarta City. It’s about 20km to the southeast from Yogyakarta City. When we go there, we can through curving street with beautiful hills scene. Before we arrive to Nglanggeran Hills, at the hills area at Pathuk Subdistrict, we have viewed with beautiful scene of Yogyakarta City like in Puncak-Bogor-West Java.

When we arrive in a crossroad not far away from Old Pathuk Village Office, we must turn left, pass through small road around 6 km for reach Nglanggeran Hills. Before we reach Nglanggeran Hills we presented some TV transmitter tower and some cellular operator antenna at the edge of this small road. After we arrive at Tawang Crossroad, we must turn right follow small road as far as 2 km and we arrived at the bottom of Nglanggeran Hills.
At the bottom of Nglanggeran Hills, there are so many big stone spread. Some big stones bigger than a house and elephants. Between the big stone there is a house like a public building. This public building used as traditional ritual/ceremony place. As some villager said, we can park our vehicle at the village near the hill. We only paid Rp2000 for park a motorbike and Rp5000 for park a car for along day. Through that village we can start climb the hill pass through small footstep to aim Nglanggeran Hills. It is not long time to reach the top of the hills. The distance of hill climbing around 2,5 km for parking area and it can reach only in 1,5 hours.

During climbing the hills we presented leafy trees and sedimentary rock formation at the edge of footstep. The leafy trees make the ambience more chilly. And when we reach the top of the hills we will be impressed. Beautiful nature scene can viewed from here. The road bendeds like snakes, wet rice fields like green ladder and trees spread out area like green beautiful carpet. At the top of this hills we can see Wonosari City surroundings by the green hills. We also can enjoy the fresh air, composure and peacefully.

Kiskenda Cave | The Wonderful Cave in Yogyakarta

Kiskendo Cave located about 35 kilometers at northwest side of Yogyakarta, located in Menoreh Mountain at Kulon Progo Regency. An also only 15 kilometers to the south from Kendal via Kaliwungu city, exactly at Trayu village, the location is very easy to reach too. The area lies about 700 meters above sea level, so the air is always cool and fresh.

The environment around this cave was so beautiful. To the East, vast lowlands extending around the Progo River can be admired and to the South, the Indian Ocean looks so wonderful. Motorbikes or cars can reach this cave. But if you are using big vehicles (i.e. bus) you are advised to stop at the Girimulyo district and continued by smaller vehicles because of the narrow road. Along the way to the cave the beautiful view of the mountainous area and the terraced rice field are a beautiful sight.

After tracking, visitors begin entering the mouth of cave; inside will be found some little caves and a little river flow. Sometimes, you can found some collegians were climbing the vertical wall and slope of cave. When you entering Kiskendo Cave, you will be greeted by wonderful stalactites and stalagmites.

When you visit Yogyakarta you can visit a great zoo that called Gembira Loka. Gembira means happy and Loka is place. Hopefully one should be happy by visiting it. Gembira Loka Zoo is located at the eastern side of Kusumanegara Street on hinterland of Yogyakarta. It is located not far away from down town, it is within the reach of andong or becak relax tour. It’s also not so far from Malioboro, Tugu Rail Station and Kotagede (center of handicraft in particular of silversmith located in eastern).

Gembira Loka Zoo that first opened in 1955, is a popular weekend destination for domestic tourist (more than 650.000 visitors a year) and a point of interest to tourists to the area, but there are also some foreign tourists watching closely the famous reptiles Komodos (Varanus Comodoensis), originally live only in Komodo Island, nearby Flores. There is a large central lake and numerous weird and wonderful entertainment devices for children dotted around the 20 hectare 400 species site.

In about one hour browsing, a visitor could see tigers, snakes, crocodiles, goat, Sumatra’s elephants, Java’s one-horned Rhinoceros, and several kinds of monkey such as Orang Utan, Beruk (Sumatra’s monkeys), the black singing monkey with big air bubble on his neck etc. There are also have collections of deer’s, birds etc.

The vast green shadowy park and the lake water and the river Gajah Wong that passes right in the middle of the zoo should regulate the temperature to be a bit cooler or at least fresher.

So far, the hotel's name had been changed six times.

In the settlement of Dutch in Indonesia, the colonial government wanted to build a hotel at the strategic location on the center of Yogyakarta, in the Malioboro Street. The cottage hotel, which built in 1908, was the biggest and the most luxurious hotel in Yogyakarta named Grand Hotel De Djokdja which means "Yogyakarta Hotel". It started to operate in the year of 1911 and only accommodate the Dutch military guests. In the 1938 the hotel was reshaped in two wings in the right and left side and the main building in the center of it.

At 1942, Japanese came and conquered Indonesia, including Yogyakarta and the Grand Hotel De Djokdja. Japanese military changed the hotel name into Hotel Asahi.

At 1945, this hotel was took over by Indonesian and in line with the spirit of freedom at that time the name of the hotel was changed to Hotel Merdeka. In the 1946, Yogyakarta became the capital of Indonesia due to the political and national security situation and the Hotel Merdeka temporarily became the office complex for the governmental cabinet at that time. Dutch tried to conquer Indonesia again and war occurred betwen the colonialist and the Indonesian soldiers. The late Great Commander General Sudirman stayed in the hotel for several months.

Indonesian government changed the name of Hotel Merdeka into Hotel Garuda in 1950 and in 1975 the government gave the trust to PT. Natour to run the hotel.

In the 1982, PT. Natour was trusted by government to renovate Hotel Garuda and upgraded from one star to three stars hotel. The renovation cost about 9 billions rupiah and finished at the end of 1984. Natour Garuda, did the Trial Ceremony with the Great Grand Opening Ceremony on 29 June 1985 at Saturday Legi (which was a good day for Hamengkubuwono IX), and officially opened by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX as the governor of Yogyakarta. In the 1987 Natour Garuda was officially stated by the government through the tourism, Post and Telecommunication Department as a three stars hotel. Together with the fast tourism development in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta, PT. Natour extends the Natour Garuda by adding 120 rooms so that the total is 240 rooms. Sri Paduka Pakualam VIII, the governor of Yogyakarta, officially opened the extension of Natour Garuda on 29 June 1991. It is a special honor that two Kings of Keraton Yogyakarta inaugurated Natour Garuda.

TransJogja! The comfortable transportation system in Yogyakarta.

Like as TransJakarta, TransJogja is a bus rapid transport system, cheap and air-conditioned around Yogyakarta, Indonesia. TransJogja is one part of the application program Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) that proclaimed the Indonesian Department of Transportation. This system began operate in early March 2008 by the Indonesian Department of Transportation, especially the Provincial Government of Yogyakarta.

Systems that use a bus (medium size) is implementing a closed system, meaning passengers can not enter the bus without going through the shelter, as well as TransJakarta. In addition, the payment system implemented different: one-way tickets to students, and general tickets to subscribe. There are three types of tickets can be purchased by passengers, the fare one-way (single trip), and general tickets to subscribe.

General ticket to subscribe is different from regular bus ticket because they are used a smart card. A machine will review the smart card automatically and the door will opened automatically. Passengers can change buses without having to pay additional fees, if still in a shelter.

Now these busses become main option of transportation in Yogyakarta. Not only the cheap cost but also the good service that become the reason of the passengers. With this bus you will not find pickpockets that sometimes found in general busses around Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta Culinary Destination

Finding food in Yogyakarta is not difficult things. There are warungs, eateries and restaurants at every nook and corner of the city. It become a serious one during the Ramadhan (Hari Raya Puasa). All the eating establishments closed for the holidays and just save the MacDonald's and KFC.

With the numerous warungs in the city, it is almost impossible to do a comprehensive review. But dont worry about this. Here we shared some warungs, restaurants or cofe. Expect to pay no more than Rp10,000 for meal with drink. The alternative would be proper eating establishments or the 'upmarket warungs', either serving a specialized menu (local or Western cuisine) or a variety of choices. Rp20,000 should be enough.

For the main 'course', we are talking about the upmarket restaurants and dining places. Compared to other Indonesian cities, Yogyakarta falls behind in the quantity and quality of its upmarket experience but it makes up through its reasonable prices and its dining environment which makes little attempt to be what is not.

Gadjah Wong

Located along Jalan Gejayan, Gadjah Wong is nicely nestled away from the main road as if entering a tranquil environment. One of the most expensive restaurants in the city means that, more often than not, you will probably be one of the few diners. Consisting of three dining atmospheres (Javanese, country music or jazz), it offers at least three excuses to return other than the excellent mains which start from 30, 000 Rp. onwards.

Parsley

Located along Jalan Kaliurang is Parsley bakery, café and restaurant under one roof. The selection of breads and pastries available at the bakery evokes memories of the neighbourhood bakeries in Singapore. Not a promising start. The cafe area is pretty cozy but with only 2 sofas, it is not exactly the place to hang out for the afternoon. They could do better with other couches. The restaurant serves the usual (local and Western mains) with mains starting from 20,000 Rp onwards which does not reflect the quality of the food served. Having eaten there a couple of times, the service and food is consistently below average. The concept of al fresco dining at night makes little sense when there is poor ventilation (read: no air conditioning) and its location along the busy Jalan Kaliurang defeats the original purpose.

Joglo Resto

Joglo Resto, located along Jalan Colombo and near the main entrance of UNY, is best described as a collection of warung food in a restaurant setting. From bawal bakar to tempe goreng to cream of chicken soup (stay away from that), you name it and they have it. The only difficult part is to comb through the myriad of consolidated menus from various stores and actually choosing what to eat. All you need to do is to write what you want (typical Indonesian style) and that's it. A typical meal should cost around 20, 000 Rp. inclusive of mains and drinks. Bills are settled at the entrance of the restaurant warung style.

Cozy Easy Dining

A chain of restaurants (Jalan Gejayan and Jalan Lasada Adisucipto) with its classy interior, there is a regret of not visiting it much earlier. Prompt service with a wide range of mains with reasonable pricing starting from 15,000 Rp. onwards and the promise of live music on weekends, Cozy Easy Dining really lives up to its name. However, the gig screen seems to distract the overall presentation. No complaints if they screen live football games. Frequently patronized by the younger local crowd, it deserves repeated visits.

Hanis Bakery

Another highly recommended eating establishment located along Jalan Palagan Tentara Pelajar. Opened by a Belgian who married an Indonesian (at time of writing, the wife is pregnant), this is the closest you can get to the atmosphere of One Rochester without the yippie crowd. Serving both Western and Javanese mains (think Gadjah Wong) starting from 25,000 Rp., the quality is close to you might find it in some fancy restaurants in Singapore. Try to buy some European bread while dining there. A jazz band plays on Fridays and Saturday evenings.

>Sapi Bali

Another restaurant located near the Hyatt along Jalan Palagan Tentara Pelajar, Sapi Bali serves one of the better iga bakar (BBQ ribs, I think) in Yogyakarta. The most expensive mains (Iga Bakar) tops at 27,000 Rp which is enough for one very hungry guy. The ribs are nicely barbequed over a nice fire such that the skin is crispy while the inside is tender and soft to the bite. One of my eating companions remarked that given the name of the restaurant and the dominance of Hinduism in Balinese society, iga bakar is one big contradiction but one is not complaining when the food is so delicious.

In terms of hanging out places, Yogya seems to need to pull up its socks.

Via Via Cafe

Located in the Prawirotaman area (associated with the backpackers), this cafe is one of the more stylish cafes / chill out places with its two storey layout. The second floor is well much better than the first especially when the jazz band belts out jazz standards on Fridays from 2000 onwards. Exhibitions by local artists are reqularly held at Via Via which pushes its arty quotient up another notch. Via Via tends to fill up quite fast so reservations are recommended if going in a big group.

Kinoki

Tucked away from the busy street of Jalan Suroto is Kinoki. Located directly opposite the Gramedia building along Jalan General Sudirman, it prides itself as a nice chill out place in the evening with daily movie screenings ranging from Hitchcock to Indonesian indie films. Food is reasonably priced with mains starting from 12,000 Rp. onwards but be prepared to wait for your food. It does sell some nice T - shirts (better than those sold in the distros) and some nice DVDs. A place for the arty farty or just to chill out without having to travel too far out.

Bintang Bar

Featured on Lonely Planet and patronized by its readers, the bar is located along Jalan Sosrowijayan, a stone throw away from the busiest street in Yogyakarta, Jalan Malioboro. Bustling with bules (the local term for foreigners) and Indonesian SPG (Sarong Party Girls), the place is filled with expats and backpackers. Live band plays on Friday evenings starting from 2100 onwards and the atmosphere picks up closer to 2300. Happy hours end at 2000 daily.

The Church of Ganjuran

Ganjuran Jesus Sacred Heart Church, as its complete name, which is located around 20 kilometers from Yogyakarta can be reached by motorcycle or car. The scenery of the green rice field and pine trees will welcome you upon entering the Ganjuran village where this church is located. Visiting this church, you will know the history of the church, enculturation of Catholic people with local community and finally you will get peacefulness.

The complex of Ganjuran church was built in 1924 with the initiative of two Dutch relatives, namely Joseph Smutzer and Julius Smutzer. This church is one of the buildings built by the two relatives since they managed Gondang Lipura Sugar Factory in the area in 1912. Other buildings they constructed were 12 schools and one clinic as the embryo of Panti Rapih Hospital.

This church that was designed by a Dutch architect J Yh van Oyen is one form of church social spirit (Rerum Navarum) that the two Dutch relatives had, namely the spirit to love others, especially the surrounding community most of them were workers in Gondang Lipuro Sugar Factory who reached its golden time in 1918 - 1930.

In its development, the church complex was completed with the construction of a temple named Jesus Sacred Heart Temple in 1927. The temple with the terrace decorated with lotus flower and the statue of Jesus in Javanese clothes becomes another choice to celebrate holy mass and pilgrimage, in addition to the church offering closeness with Javanese culture.

Walking around the church, you will realize that this building was designed by integrating European, Hindu, and Javanese styles. European style is seen from the shape of the building forming a cross from above view, while Javanese style is seen from the roof forming tajug that is supported by four teakwood pillars, symbolizing four Gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Javanese nuance is seen at the alter, sancristi (where instruments for mass celebration are kept), doopvont (water containter for baptizing) and chatevummenen (the place of the teacher of Catholic religion). The statues of Jesus and Mary who is carrying Her son are depicted in Javanese clothes. The reliefs at every stop of the Sacrification Path Jesus is described as having hairs of Hindu monks.

You can take holy water from the left side of the temple. After taking water, you can sit cross-legged in front of the temple and say the prayer. The procession of the celebration is ended by entering the temple and say your prayer in front of Christ statue. Some pilgrims take the water and put it in a bottle then take it home after they pray for it.

If you want to take part in holy mass celebration done in Javanese language with songs accompanied by gamelan, you can come to this church on Thursdays to Sundays at 05:30 a.m., every night of first Friday, each Christmas and on Saturdays at 05:00 p.m. The holy mass is done at the yard of the temple, except daily mass at 05:30 a.m. that is done in the church.

After completing the celebration or pilgrimage, take your time to talk with local people in order to know the history of Ganjuran village where the church is located. In Javanese old history, Ganjuran was part of Alas Mentaok territory named Lipuro. The place was used by Senopati to meditate and was planned to become the center of Mataram kingdom.

The change of the name to Ganjuran itself was related to love story of Ki Ageng Mangir and Rara Pembayun who was exiled by Mataram. The love story of the two person later inspired the creation of the Javanese song: Kala Ganjur, which means human basic binding line in living life together based on love. It was from the name of the song that the name Lipuro of the village changed to Ganjuran.

If you spend time talking with local people, there are many other stories to explore, such as the cancellation of Lipuro to become the center of Mataram Kingdom, the reason for exiling Ki Ageng Mangir and Roro Pembayun and so on.

Masjid Soko Tunggal - Kraton Yogyakarta

Masjid Soko Tunggal lies in the south of the path, which leads to the Taman Sari Pesanggrahan (a rest-house). This mosque is called Soko Tunggal because of its single pillar. This mosque build in 28th February 1973 by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX. This mosque is built in honour of suhada or hero that fall in battle opposes dutch army in battle that known general attack 1 March. Different from other Javanese traditional buildings, the pillar of the mosque is supported by a bar of stone called “umpak”. It is interesting to know that the umpak used to be the one to support the pillar of the old-Mataram kingdom in the Islamic period. Up to now, the mosque is still in use by many Moslems. Has vast 288 meters square this mosque also showed to simplify tourists middle pay a visit to Taman Sari. This mosque can adopt until 600 jamaah.
