Sneak Peek sketches for Facebook mural

This week I've been sketching for some murals we'll be doing in one of the buildings at Facebook's new Menlo Park headquarters. I'm honored to be asked, and have lots of ideas for the lobby, hallways, nooks, and work areas. They are open to anything--anywhere--which is very cool! Here's a sketch for one of the walls... The idea is to show how we are all connected.

I wanted to show spheres covered with hexagons. They remind me of radomes, but I see them as alive, pulsating things. If this was animated, the balls would be spinning and gyrating and the white light energy coming from the balls would move across the surface of the ground. Maybe just a bit dangerous to whatever is in their path.

A Botswana safari with friends earlier this year inspired me to start including giraffes in my art. Of course, they're too tall to fit inside regular spaceships. "Planetary Gears" will be part of the "Mechanical Voyages" exhibition at Gallery 1044 in January.

Another piece for the San Francisco series. It's 1000 years from now, and San Francisco is still a tourist destination. Aliens and robots from the far galaxies come to visit the city. 'Stro, 15x22, acrylic and epoxy on reclaimed cabinet door.

The Big Day

The Big Day commission painting went out a couple of weeks ago, and arrived in Colorado to commemorate the birth of a new baby boy. I'm honored for my artwork to be part of a child's early life. Hurray! Best wishes to the family! Painting is 36x36 inches, acrylic and epoxy on cradled wood.

Machine Elves

ArtSpan Open Studios starts with
Artlaunch Thursday, September 29th 6:30 to 9:00pm.

Premier Artists each display one piece at SomArts to give people a feel for which artists' studios they might want to visit. Generally everything is for sale, with pick-up at the end of the month.

Today I helped with final touches getting the gallery ready.
Here it is empty, but tomorrow it will be filled with art for the exhibition!

Here's my contribution, titled "Machine Elves."

Come to the party Thursday, or stop in anytime in October!

FUNframer just added Johnny Botts images to their website! You pick a style, pick a photo, and it combines them for fun! They also have themes with ninjas, critters, hearts, and more. Very cool!

This birdhouse is in the tree in front of our house. Our neighbor supplied birdhouses to many of the trees along our street. Love them!

Awhile ago, Odilia gave me 25 kitchen cabinet doors to use for art. So far, about 6 of them are painted, getting ready for a local show. Here's one of them, re-imaging Lombard Street.

The Hurrier I Go, the Behinder I Get

A trivet just like this one hung in the kitchen where I grew up. We used it to set hot dishes on the table.

When I saw it online, I was tempted to buy it for nostalgia. Then I remembered we are trying to purge things, not accumulate more. It's funny how seeing it brings back a flood of memories, and missing my mom, because it was hers.

Golden Gate

The bridge. The other day we were driving across it, and I wondered out loud, how many photographs per day are taken of this bridge? There are hundreds of pedestrians on the bridge, and everyone has a camera. You can see the bridge from locations all around the bay. We are drawn to it, and the views of the city make it even more of a magnet.

This painting shows the bridge in the distant future. Who can say what kind of visitors will be visiting?

You can see some of my new SF themed pieces this month at City Art gallery, 828 Valencia St, San Francisco. Opening Reception is Friday, August 5th, 7-10pm

This piece sold the day after the opening reception... Cool!

Visiting the Castro

In August, City Art Gallery is featuring a San Francisco theme show. I set out to create some fun, simple pieces to contribute. The first one, Visiting the Castro, borrows a sketch from a commission proposal. The idea for my San Francisco series is that in the distant future, San Francisco continues to be a tourist destination, but it is robots and aliens from the far galaxies who come to visit. No SF holiday would be complete without a stop in the Castro...

Embarcadero Rocket

In 2009, early morning at Burning Man, I had the pleasure of being alone, and visiting up close, the Raygun Gothic Rocket now on display at the Embarcadero. Love at first sight. Out on the playa, 40' seemed immense.

I'm glad it is on display in the city for everyone to enjoy!
