Recents activity - Lok Kawi Wildlife Park Kota Kinabalu

Recently I went to Lok Kawi Wildlife park in Kota Kinabalu with Mr. Tee (Nikon Malaysia), Jason and Andrew (both are Bird expert of Borneo) to see Rufous Collared Kingfisher at the Botanical Garden.
We went there to test the new EDG Nikon Scope. It was superb and clarity is excellent. I went to shoot with my D300 80-200mm f 2.8 and it is not as good as with digi scoping with subject in a distance.

Mr. Tee and myself spotted this snake on the railings. Green Whip snake. Non venomous.

We are looking forward to go back there and explore for more wildlife and bird in this beautiful place.

I was away for almost 2 months and didn't notice that a bird had made a nest just out side my house window. It is quite interesting as this type of bird (a Kind of Sunbird) normally would create their nest in the tress near parks or forest. I am still trying to figure out what sort of sunbird this is till I see rest rest of the body. In the mean time I will look out for this bird. If anyone knows this bird please feel free to give the name. Thanks.

I have just completed another special interest group that goes around Sabah for 12 days with 18 person.

Mt. Kinabalu from air over to Sandakan with my new D300 Nikon ISO 400 , 70-300mm VR

Kinabalu Park, Mesilau, Poring Hot Springs, Sandakan Sepilok, Sukau, Keningau, Tenom and of course Kota Kinabalu city. The group mostly comes from Australia and a few from UK.
I would say my trip with this group this time are very lucky. At Poring Hot Springs we saw 3 flowering Rafflesia Keithii at same spot,

We had a wonderful time and infact we saw most of what we have expected to see in Beautiful Sabah.

It has been quite some time that I have not been updating my blog as per my busy schedule and not so much interesting fotos taken the last few months. However this time with this WWF Donors Group roundtrip program for 8 days has been quite an interesting sightings especially today where we sighted the super rare ground cuckoo and plus others which some are rare and beautiful.

This group of interesting people whom I am taking are supporters and Donors to WWF UK which are going to support the fundings of Heart of Borneo program. This program will somehow help to protect the core of Borneo's remaining Forest to save the key species of animals of Borneo in particular Orangutan, Borneo Elephants and Sumatran Rhino. By protecting this key species it will then also protect the same habitat for other endangered animals of Borneo such as Clouded Leopard, Malayan Sun Bear rare Sunda Ground Cuckoo and many more o the list.Dato Dr. Mikail Kavanagh who is leading the group is the former CEO WWF Malaysia now retired and kind enough to spend his time to take us around to show areas of his work before. Organizer of this group to come here in Borneo is Ms. Anna Morling from WWF UK of whom was also here last year with a group of same itinerary. The Donors are Mr.David Smith (UK), Mr. & Mrs.Michael & Hermione Ruddell (UK), Mr. Jonathan Hancock & partner Ms. Stephanie Wong Hong Kong).On our 5th day in Sabah- at Menanggul River in Sukau Kinabatangan, on an early morning cruise I then spotted some big birds like wild fowls flying over the tree tops by the side of the river. At first I was not aware of what it is and thought it was some kind of hornbill. It then jumpoutof the trees to the side and it is the Sunda Ground Cuckoo. A pair of them playing around as it the male it trying to court the female by flapping the wings and tail. It was a shocking moment for me and for the rest of the group to find this rare and almost extinct bird. It was almost the same place where i saw the Cuckoo in septenbre 2007. Also I would like to add my big Thank you to KK Tours and Travel S/B for Organizing this trip and not forgetting Audley Travel UK for putting up all WWF UK and Scotland groups to Sabah from March to May 2008. WWF Sabah had also put up a tremendous effort in Escorting the group and providing enough support both form the office Staff and also the field staff to make sure all guest are well taken care during their stay in Sabah. Everyone had played their role successfully and managed the group professionally to make WWF donors program a Success. This program had reach its purpose and everyone is Happy about it. Hoping there would be such a group again in near future.

Crocker Range Park Bird Photo Trip

On 27 Aug 07 a group of us Ced , John Kong, Albert, Wendy Hutton, Jason and myself set out on a trip to Crocker Range for a familiarization trip. The park had been there since the 80's but it was a research station and restricted to researches only. It is just about 12 km from Keningau town. Elevation is about 800m asl. It makes it as a cool place with temperature between 18-27degrees celcius. It has a superb view of the Crocker Range and over looking Keningau town.

It has a beautiful Virgin Rainforest and the Park is surrounded with it. It is also a water catchment for Kota Kinabalu city and west coast area of Sabah. The bird life is very interesting too. We saw Some hornbill- wreathed Hornbill n Pied hornbill, White fronted Falconet - World Smallest Raptor and only to be found in northern Borneo! Drongos and etc.
It has now a new accommodation build in the area to accommodate visitors like Hostels and Resthouses.
The following are some fotos captured on this trip:-

Along the way we saw spectacular view of west coast of Sabah. At one point we saw K.K and the islands off KK- Tunku Abdul Rahman Island park. We stopped several places to take pictures of the breathtaking views and taking in fresh air while giving the car a rest after hard climbing on Long steep slopes coming up to Crocker range Park via 4x4. The road is so nicely sealed and any vehicles may go thru except you have to make sure your radiator water is enough and the brakes is working properly to avoid any incidents.

After reaching the Park we trek the forest an d it was just an exciting trek and something different than the regular trails of Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Springs. Lots of Wild Salaks Palms and Wild Fish Tail palms, also some oak trees, Pine trees and some wild bananas plants. Part of the trail cross through some former local orchard and Rubber Plantations, which local people did not realise they were in the Park boundary when they planted the crops long ago.

John K was briefed by The Doc on his situation

Then we got a call from Albert that John had a fall from his bike and quickly rush him to the nearest hospital. Had him X-rayed and found his collar bone was slightly fractured. Good thing it was not that serious.

Further checks was administered and found everything else is normal. except John K couldn't lift his left arm for a while.

The trip was full of excitement and thrill. On just two days trip it was just FUNTASTIC! couldn't wait for the next trip to Crocker Range. We all went back to KK after the John K treatment at the Hospital.

Sepilok Encounter- Rhino Hornbil

Rhinoceros Hornbill found nesting

This picture was taken at Sepilok Forest on the Bird Tower trail and a Nest of Rhinoceros hornbill was found just along the trail just recently. This Hornbill was found feeding the female and chic inside the nest. This is another rare moment to find this species of hornbill nesting. Male and female hornbill usually mate for for life!

Lance , Jason and myself just came back from a week trip on a Tour assignment cum photo trip in Sukau Sandakan Sabah. Situated along Lower Kinabatangan River. Its a mighty river 560km long. It is one of the most cencentrated with wild animals in Asia!. We stayed in Tomanggong River Lodge run by Cede Prudente under North Borneo Safari Tour Sdn. Bhd.

It was a fruitful trip and saw lots of animals and super rare animals and animals in action. Please check out foto's below.

Proboscis Monkey is the Prime attraction in Sukau. They are only to be found in Borneo. Most easily found at Sukau and very photo friendly too compare to other parts of Borneo. Many other animals are also found if you are patience enough and hire a right guide or some good animal spotter local guide or boatman. Most animal watching is done in a comfort of sitting in a boat. Boat capacity is 8 person and without canopy to shed you from sun or rain. So therefore don't forget to bring your own raincoat if you are visiting Sukau.

Crocodile is another attractive inhabitant of the river Kinabatangan. Sukau Tomanggong River Lodge is the best place to view this Big 3m long Resident Crocodile name FRANKIE. He would land himself nearby the lodge hoping to get some passing by food. Dogs!

In one of the morning cruise, I spotted a couple of eagle flying up ahead and trying to land just in front of our boat. Then took picture of the sequence on Landing. Awesome!

Then in one of the afternoon cruise we saw a family of small clawed otter by the river bank. This is an unusual sighting of otter in a group. Lucky ha....!

Then at night we went for a night cruise from Sukau to Abai and suddenly when night falls.....
Fire flies starts to glow and it was like Christmas trees along the river near Abai village. 2 hours by small boat from Sukau. it is about the same those found in Klias river.

As we went on cruising a Leopard cat appeared by the river bank and we start shooting - with Camera of course! This Leopard cat is a very rare sight. Another lucky sighting!

Then another close up shot of a Blue Eared kingfisher . They wont fly at night even you are quite close. But not too close.

Then the whether starts to turn bad and we head home. I manage to shoot the cloud with a lightning.Lightning!!

Bornean Ground Cuckoo - Very rare bird of Borneo!

This bird is so so rare and difficult to find and yet alone to be photograph! I was with Lance, Jason and a couple of Italian Tourist on a morning cruise. Then We heard the call. Jason our bird specialist saw it first in the bushes and got very very excited and nervous. He started shouting and tried to call the bird back with his birds calls via Ipod. Then it appeared again very very quickly and ran away. I manage to picture a glimpse of it with a slightly blurred vision. The last foto of this bird was in 2005 by Simon Colenut if not mistaken. It it considered as threathened animal and a very rare bird. Listed in IUCN red list of Threatened species.!

Another surprise was a snake fell out of a tree near the restaurant with a frog on his mouth and it was trying to take it up back on the tree and was swallowing it. I manage to capture it from start to finish. I post just 1 pic for your pleasure. It was a pity to the frog. Snake was happy though! yummy.....!

Our trip ends in Sukau and our assignment is done. However our encounter with the wild has not over. Our our way home back to kk on Sunday night. It was raining heavily and we were near nalapak then I saw a short snake in the middle of the road and almost hit it. I ask Jason to stop and turn back. To our surprise it is still alive and it is a rare Blood Phyton or Short Phyton. We took some picture and make sure he was safe crossing the road.

Northern Borneo or as its official name now known as Sabah is just a place with wonderous nature. Mt. Kinabalu as its focal point of Borneo, Fauna with its Icon - The Orangutan, Flora- Rafflesia flower - The worlds largest, Rothschild Slipper Orchid - The worlds rarest orchid, Sipadan - A diving paradise and worlds most diverse marine life to name a few nature wonders that can be easily found in Sabah.
This place is just magnificent. Its a Birders and Nature Photographers paradise. You just can finish taking pictures and even just birdwatching. There are so plentiful things to do.
So my self and a few friends will embark a journey to go around beautiful nature sites of Sabah just to capture the beauty and plus the things in it.
We will set up a plan soon to visit the places and will invite those interested to join us. A few professional birders, and local photographers will be just assist us to be the leaders.

So to start with on
11 Aug - Lok Kawi afternoon bird & Photo trip - Shore birds
12 Aug - Lok Kawi am Bird & photo trip and Crocker Range overnight trip.
13 Aug - Crocker range and Beaufort Padang Teratak bird & photo trip.

Tour leaders will be our Star photographer Mr. Ced Prudente.

The Danum Valley, a primary rainforest jungle, is far removed from human habitation. In March this year I went to Danum Valley to meet up with a photographer with the wife from British columbia Canada. We stayed about a week in Danum Valley Borneo Rainforest Lodge. I met Mr. John Whitelaw and wife Mrs. Christine Whitelaw on arrival at BRL. I travelled up a day before to recce the place before they arrived . On arrival Christine was not feeling well on the road trip to BRL due to the condition of the road. Its a dirt road for 2.5 hrs from Lahad Datu to BRL. However Mr. John W is all excited on arrival. They told me they saw a few wild pygmy elephant on the last 5km to the lodge. And they were Lucky! I didn't see any of them that period. John W showed me his photo of the elephant.

They checked in and later we talked on John's photo interest and Christine interest too. To my relief John W does not like to trek so much and running after animals in the jungle. So I can take it easy to concentrate on little animals which are my interest and John can take photo of his interest. I ask John W's interest. He likes some abstract especially nature. At first I don't know what he was talking about. I will show you some of his photo works later. I asked Christine of her interest. She says she likes watching nature from the lodge. She dare not go to jungle as she is terrified of leeches and snakes. So she stayed at the lodge and restaurant the whole duration of their stay.

In the morning I went out and saw a group of Red leaf monkeys at close up. Not only that, for the first time I saw a Morph Langgur of the Red leaf Monkey. Photo on my blog banner. It was awesome.

We went to the canopy walkway and it was a good view of the Lowland Virgin Jungle from there. At that time the canopy is undergoing extension.

We went back to the lodge after a long walk that morning. Had a good buffet lunch and took some rest. Later that afternoon we heard some news from our naturalist, Mr. Vivian and said that there is an old wild Orangutan nearby the staff quarters feeding on the fig fruits. We grab our camera equiptment and ran to the site. We were the first to get there and got some good pictures. We called Christine to come and this one was so nearby and it was ok for her to come. She came and was very happy to ever see a Wild Orangutan! Without going into the jungle and seeing the Leeches and snakes that would stick on her and sucks the blood out of her.

Later there were more visitors came and viewed the Orangutan

We went on to do some of the jungle treks and manage to get some little animals shot. Just as I like. The trees are so gigantic and beautiful. Its one of the oldest rainforest in the world. It is said to be more than 1 million years old. Shorea sp. Tree.

We crossed suspension bridges and trek up and down hills. After such a long walk and a hot day, we returned to our rooms. To my surprise a frog almost camouflage to the railings just outside my room. An amazing -Four Line tree frog.Fourlined tree frog

There are many more activities can be done at Danum Valley. Night drives, trek to coffin hills, drive to Danum valley Field centre and much more. It is such a wonderful trip.
Mr. / Mrs John Whitelaw are very happy with their trip and hoping for their return in future. John W are so kind enough to send me a few poster size fine print of his works all the way from Canada and all expenses paid. Thank you so much Mr. John Whitelaw.
I came back to KK with a whole load of pictures and yet to be edited till now. I can't wait for another trip to Danum Valley.

Photo Trip at Mesilau Kundasang

On July 11, Lance Lee, Jason B. Reyes n myself set out very early in the morning 0530am heading towards kg. Mesilau at Kundasang near Mt. Kinabalu. It was a clear morning and we can see the mountain very clearly. We stopped along the way a few times to get some shots. It was a magnificent day that morning. We enjoyed our trip.
We head towards JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam malaysia) complex to assist Ced Prudente and John Kong on their Digital Photo basic course for 2 days. 23 participants were on the course.

When we arrive the place, we were amazed with the view and the new complex were awesome. We took more photos as we arrived. Then we quickly went to the class where everybody awaits. It was just in time when the class were about to begin. I still couldn't stop thinking on how beautiful the place is while in the class. I couldn't wait to go out there again and start clicking.
Lance and Jason did a big help in assisting Ced and John K on the 2 days foto course at JAKIM. As the days goes the clouds outside builds up and winds starts to pound the complex. We can hear the whistling sound of the strong wind then suddenly a flapping sound of the metal roof became loud. I went out and found some of the roof had been torned. It was a very windy day and freezing too.
It was a succesful course. We had a good new place to checked in. It has 50 rooms and attached with toilets, room heater and water heater.

Ced and John K started their lecture with an introduction of the equiptment and a video show. Their awesome equiptment is just amazing. Among the stuff is high end nikon cameras D2Xs, D200, 600 mm f4 zoom lens, 500mm f4, fish eye lenns, and computer equiptment with 5G MAC for presentation. It surely does impressed all of us and the participants. The best thing is, we could play and test with the equiptments. we sure did enjoyed ourselves.

This is Lance Lee and Jason Reyes that helped in the success of the foto course. That afternoon after the rain stops we went out and took some photos. It was a cold afternoon. The wind still blowing hard till night time.

At night we were provided with a good BBQ dinner and it ws delicious and at the right place. It was yummy and had a goodnight sleep.

This bug recently swarm Sabah Tea garden and also Sukau in Kinabatangan by the hundreds. Anoying but they are such a beautiful creature. Anyone knows this bugs correct name. Please give comments. Also the following insects posted. Thanks.

Moth is an interesting and highly specialized insect. They would do anything to comouflage the sorrounding and to show they are poisonus from being eaten alive by their predators.

This little moth surprises me for a while. It looks like a pluffy brown little doggie. It's very strange world at night in Borneo.

I went to Sabah Tea Garden near Ranau Sabah recently with my guest and was sitting near a bright light then suddenly they came. The secrets of the dark reveals itself. They are such a wonderful creature and beautiful.

Sumatran Rhino Borneo

This Sumatran Rhino is the only one found in Captivity at Wildlife Park Lok Kawi in Kota Kinabalu City. It is also said to be just less than 15 in the wild jungle of Borneo. It will be the next animal to be extinct in the millenium. If this one dies there wont be anymore to be in captivity. It's the last chance to see it. It is very rare and extremely dificult to see it in the wild!
