It is a Certified Project Managers dream, except that while I’m certified, it’s not as a project manager.

PRESENTATIONS

I’ll bet I’ve looked and/or reviewed over 1000 powerpoint or Symphony presentations by now. This has caused me to want the next great presentation tool that will retire these platforms, I’m not a fan of charts. We’ve had weekly content review meetings with some of the top strategists in SWG. It’s amazing that we do all the things that we do. Conversely, it is hard to get your arms around the breadth of our offerings. It’s no wonder that other companies are making acquisitions that cause them to resemble what IBM is doing.

It is is however overwhelming to keep up with the revisions, making sure that all groups are coordinated with the common messaging and the myriad details of what the actual products, new companies we acquired, strategies, competitors, customers and other details that I’ve learned since July.

ACCOMMODATIONS

When you serve one master, it’s easy to know what they want. When you have many, including over 100 analysts, it is a juggling act that would amaze an Ed Sullivan audience. Everyone has details to attend to. It’s amazing to me that our team is on top of every change.

Event planning is a job in itself, not to mention my day job in analyst relations. Working with everyone has been a lesson in getting people to work with you, work together and get to the common goal. We have 25 Breakouts, 18 Round Table discussions, demo’s, 1:1’s, Chat with the Experts and close to 100 speakers. Fortunately, I’m blessed to work with a team that is executing and working endless hours.

The best thing is that there is a deadline. That in itself drives results. The other good thing is a leader who is <del datetime="2009-11-05T14:09:08+00:00">feared</del> respected greatly and he drives results also.

WE WILL DELIVER INFORMATION

The analysts are going to walk out of the meeting with more notes and information than we’ve ever provided. Our leader knows what the analysts are talking to their customers about and we’re putting the meeting in that format…..so they can talk about our products, strategy and direction. He’s also a good businessman who understands the pressures our customers are under in this economy and what we need to do to help them succeed.
IT’S BEEN A GREAT EXPERIENCE

I’ve enjoyed this assignment, but I’ll happily turn the gavel over to the next person who runs it next year. I’ve lost a lot of sleep, and a few hunting days that I’ll want to get back.

For the record. The blog tag is connect09 and hastag is #connect09

The mid point review with “the Big Guy” happened last Friday, and the good news is that we are on track. And boy does he have something to say. What is good about working with him is no ambiguities. He knows what he wants and he’s been in the marketplace for 36 years, so he’s seen all the tricks.

The good news is we’re going to deliver information to the analysts in a way they talk to their customers. We’ve strayed from that path in the past and weren’t a successful in the message delivery as we could have been. Not this year. We are on message to describe why our Software Strategy is a winning move for companies.

The not as good news is that although we are on track to be halfway, more than half of the work is left to do. We have a new portal for ease of use for the analysts and a lot of content, people logistics and an Army of minutia to deliver.

Stay tuned.

I’ve thought about the history of our nation starting with the “Greatest Generation” who fought WWII and then sacrificed to make this country the best it could be for the next generation.

Then came the 60’s and Woodstock which created a generation of idiots who began flushing our legacy down the drain.

In this single event we see some of the worst aspects of a generation of twits, thieves, anti-Americans, fools, and ignoramuses all wrapped up with the arrogance that we’ve come to associate with those ……. who are our politicians and college professors in America today.

The actions of the next generation lead to the failure to protect our country, which emboldened the 9/11 terrorists to attack because they saw the lack of response to the embassy bombings, the USS Cole and the first WTC attack. We had Bin Laden 3 times in the 90’s and let him go. The cycle now starts again with redefining what the day is instead of embracing it’s true meaning.

It was an act of evil and a tragedy.

There is no doubt who was behind it either.

Next, we are letting recidivist terrorists out of Gitmo and instead investigating the CIA, that seems a little backwards from the view that the greatest generation would take, don’t you think? We should show strength instead of apologizing for protecting ourselves and handcuffing those who protect us.

Back to that day, War was declared on the US and we aren’t fighting back the way we decided these issues in the days of Patton and Churchill. They showed that you fight to victory then negotiate the terms of peace, exit strategy and how to help re-build the countries that the enemies have overrun. Instead, political correctness is handcuffing the proper response.

It is tough to watch this and think our country is not what it use to be. We can’t forget what made us great because we are worried about the polls of people who are negative to America anyway. I’ll fly the flag today and remember those who lost their lives both in the attack and defending our country, and pray we refocus our goals on what made our country great.

By any other name, it is still Patriot day as signed into law by President Bush in 2001.

Here is the attack in pictures

Tell them what you are going to say;

Say it;

Tell them what you said.

This is easy for a 1 product company or a 1 technology company. You tell the same story over and over, refining it and it’s pretty easy. You know where your market is in the industry, who your competitors are and assuming you don’t break the law, you get the message across. Having worked in a small company before, I’ve done this and you wish you were bigger or better or could be the 800 lb. gorilla in the room like say, an IBM.

Be Careful of What You Wish For

In planning the content for the IBM Software Group Analyst Briefing, our time constraints are comparable to hauling 10 tons of information in a 1 ton truck. We have too much to cover in a day and a half, and almost all of it is interesting and relevant. Moreover, it has implications for research writing and analysis that analysts will be doing, so we have to make the decision as to what gets in, and what drops off the table. Fortunately, it isn’t a zero sum game. If it doesn’t make it into the meeting content, it is good enough that the proper analysts will and can hear about it either before or after the Analyst Meeting.

Other Concerns

When you are as big as IBM, you wind up being everywhere…meaning you bump into yourself if you are not careful. Case in point, some of our biggest partners are also our competitors. We have groups that sell services that include competitor solutions. We also have some groups that have enough content to warrant an entire briefing just for them…..in fact most of our brands have this issue.

Here is another one, the Cloud. We have multiple software brands within our middleware portfolio who have a piece of the solution. One must be careful with the messaging to make sure that at the end of the day, the pieces fit together in the puzzle. The worst case scenario is that we give either confusing or conflicting messages in a space this large and important.

So we will go through many revisions of the presentations to make sure that they mesh properly and compliment each other. This results in many, many, many, many meetings to get it right.

The coordination of this task is just a portion of putting together a successful analyst event. It’s a job by itself, not forgetting the fact that I have a day job to do also. Soon, we’ll be adding people to the team to take on the scheduling and administration tasks so we’ll have more help.

As I chronicle the shaping of this event, you should get the chance to see what goes into the planning and how we are doing with using the brightest minds in IBM SWG to brief some of the brightest minds in the IT analyst community.

Although the actual meeting is months away, our success will be in organizing the meeting properly.

Let me outline the scope of the task. We’ll have upwards of 100 analysts and at least that many people from IBM.

Messaging

Steve (General) Mills has the overarching message, but each of the lieutenants (GM’s) have their specific message. Proper coordination of the group messaging is paramount. After one meeting a few years ago, I cringed when an analyst stood up at the end of the day and said he had been to 5 separate briefings and heard 5 different definitions for a certain technology and could someone state what the company definition was.

We have a content team from the strategy group to help us coordinate the messaging across all of our brands. This team is crucial to our goal of getting our strategy stated to this group of analysts. This leads me into the key of what I think will make this a successful meeting…selecting a good team and organization.

Organization

Right now, I’m trying to think of every conceivable task, deliverable, team, message, group..you name it and identify start and end dates for each. If we can identify what and when things need to be delivered, we have a chance at pulling this off. I started with a spreadsheet, but fortunately, there is a portal we have available to us which manages this plus all the analyst deliverables.

Team

We already have the content team on board as I previously mentioned. We also have the logistics and budget team who carry over from year to year, so they are solid.

The next assignments will be 1:1 coordinators, technical requirements for sessions coordinator, Chat with the Experts and Hot Topic coordinator. These people have to cross multiple groups and make cross connections with the analyst schedule request so that the right people arrive at the right place to say or hear what they came for.

While this seems logical, the bogey here is ego and bandwidth. All of these jobs (as with mine) are in addition to the day to day responsibilities. Suck it up and get on with it though. As for ego’s, try putting 100 analysts in a room with a bunch of executives who command hundreds, maybe thousands around and it gets good.

I’ll post progress on the meeting as we get further along. For now, getting your arms around the project and having the right army are the focus.

It’s no secret that Software Group is doing well for IBM. Analysts should be particularly interested in how and what we are doing, now more than ever.

We hold a yearly analyst conference in November to discuss our issues and give the analysts who follow our business the chance to listen to our leaders and ask what they may.

Running the Event:

Each year, one lucky soul gets to be the A/R liaison for this event for logistics with the strategy team. This year it is yours truly. I did it once before and it is time consuming and the details are overwhelming. It’s a job to add to your job. For the record, I’m honored to do it.

I’ve decided to blog about it as part of the Social Media outreach. There will be a second blog residing on My developerWorks (I”ll post the link in an additional blog) so that you can follow our progress and what tools we are going to use.

I’ve been working on it now for a few weeks, but we meet with the powers that be today which really kicks off the event in terms of work to do.

Request for Advice:

Since two way interaction is actual communication, I’m open for (reasonable) suggestions from the analysts who want to find out more and interact prior to the event. It will only make for a better conference.

We’ll have a closed portal only to those who are registered, so sorry competition, there are some issues off limits. We’ll provide tons of data and make the conference easier to attend and navigate than ever.

Wish us luck and don’t be afraid to send me suggestions. Jsimonds@us.ibm.com

I celebrate this day for any number of reasons.

First, it represents the birth of the greatest nation in history (I’m a proud American, but which country in history has given more to others?) I’ll admit that no nation is perfect and we’ve had our share of black eyes, but I’d prefer to look at the good it has achieved.

Many have fought and died for our freedom and freedom for other countries. I’m celebrating their contribution and praise them and their families.

In Honor of them, here is how to fold a flag on a casket.

It is also my Mother’s Birthday. Unfortunately, she also died on the 4th so it is with mixed feelings that I approach her memory this day. Those who still have your mother’s should contact them and tell them how much they mean to you and thank them for what they’ve sacrificed for you, while you still have time.

Here is the Faye Simonds day lilly named after her. We have them in our day lilly garden.

I’m glad to have the time off and a long weekend. I’ll be back to work soon enough, but for now, I”m cutting trees in the forrest to get ready for deer season, caught fish on the lake yesterday (boat ran great) and it was good to spend time with my wife. We are working our garden and I finally shot the varmints today that were eating on it (squirrel and rabbit).

Finally, the trivial. It is race day at Daytona, The Tour de France starts today, and I can’t forget about the Hot Dog Eating Contest.

According to a 2008 survey by Technorati, which runs a search engine for blogs, only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs the company tracks had been updated in the past 120 days. That translates to 95 percent of blogs being essentially abandoned, left to lie fallow on the Web, where they become public remnants of a dream — or at least an ambition — unfulfilled.

Here’s the other side of the coin. Tweetdeck issues a new release tonight.

TweetDeck however thought it was time for a major upgrade in features as well. So along with the ability to sync with the iPhone app, they have implemented an array of new features, small and big. Two of the biggest: multiple accounts and unlimited columns. Here’s a quick highlight of some of the important ones, with screenshots showing these features in action:

1. “Block and Report Spam” button: Clicking on this button will not only delete the spam message, but it will block that specific user and report them to Twitter. Simply brilliant.
2. “Reply All” feature: You can now tweet to everyone who is mentioned in a specific tweet.
3. “TweetDeck Recommends” column: Just as it sounds, it’s a column with a list of recommended people to follow.

4. Deeper video playback support: Qik, 12seconds, and other video clips are fully supported in TweetDeck.
5. Auto-suggest filter: When you start typing someone’s username, it will find the person and allow you to add them to a group quickly.

6. Integration with YFrog for photo sharing.
7. RE (In reference to): A new menu feature that allows you to reference a specific user or a tweet in your own message.

8. Multiple accounts and unlimited columns: Yes, two of TweetDeck’s most requested features have arrived.

And like we said earlier, these are just a few of the features that TweetDeck’s desktop version has added.

It’s just human nature to go to the path of least resistance, so is narcissism. Twitter is that. Journalists are still good bloggers and I enjoy upwards of 200 blogs a day to get the real news rather than the bias of the MSM. For most though, the model has shifted to micro-blogging and the ability to punch out 140 characters from a mobile device is a paradigm shift.

I sat down with Gary Barnett of the Bathwick Group to discuss the state of Analyst relations. Gary confirmed some things that I believe to be true such as the relationship is key to working with analysts. Further, he confirms that analysts have great value to the sales cycle and that it is in the best interest of A/R to use them as a best practice.

Note: To best hear this, you will want to use headphones.

Special thanks to Gary for his time and thoughts. I hope this helps the A/R profession.

I likely am not going to make a lot of friends, but I’ve taken many personality tests and have read a great deal about relationships and the differences between Men and Women.

Recently, a story came out from Harvard Business Publishing on Twitter users.

Here is the part of the story that stood out for me, in fact it hit me between the eyes like a 2×4:

Although men and women follow a similar number of Twitter users, men have 15% more followers than women. Men also have more reciprocated relationships, in which two users follow each other. This “follower split” suggests that women are driven less by followers than men, or have more stringent thresholds for reciprocating relationships. This is intriguing, especially given that females hold a slight majority on Twitter: we found that men comprise 45% of Twitter users, while women represent 55%. To get this figure, we cross-referenced users’ “real names” against a database of 40,000 strongly gendered names.

Even more interesting is who follows whom. We found that an average man is almost twice more likely to follow another man than a woman. Similarly, an average woman is 25% more likely to follow a man than a woman. Finally, an average man is 40% more likely to be followed by another man than by a woman. These results cannot be explained by different tweeting activity – both men and women tweet at the same rate.

These results are stunning given what previous research has found in the context of online social networks. On a typical online social network, most of the activity is focused around women – men follow content produced by women they do and do not know, and women follow content produced by women they knowi. Generally, men receive comparatively little attention from other men or from women. We wonder to what extent this pattern of results arises because men and women find the content produced by other men on Twitter more compelling than on a typical social network, and men find the content produced by women less compelling (because of a lack of photo sharing, detailed biographies, etc.).

WHY MEN?

Here is what became very apparent to me. Most studies agree that women talk through there problems to arrive at a solution. Men think through a problem and talk when they’ve arrived at a solution. 140 characters is just not enough to talk your way through an issue, ergo better suited for men.

Also, Men know the above is true even if they haven’t read the study and get into trouble with women by trying to solve the problem before their woman friends have talked their way through the issue. The other way we get into trouble is to try to solve everything for a woman when just listening is what a woman wants. Men don’t do that well, we try to fix things (that’s why your female friends are there for you, not us). Also, we’re bottom line people. We don’t need the details, just the result so 140 fits the bill.

That should give some inside to the following numbers issue. We know that men have usually been through the thought process already rather than using it as a solution oriented process.

MEN DON’T WANT TO COMMUNICATE THEIR FEELINGS

Men don’t really want to communicate that much, at all. That is why 140 characters works so well. We learn this at puberty when most sons answer their parents with a grunt which is good for yes, no, maybe and I don’t know. We don’t really want to talk that much, to anyone unless it is about sports, conquests, the details of an engine, the shotgun formation or other testosterone based issues. We really don’t want to talk about feelings or emotions either.

I think that 140 characters is limiting for effective communication by women by nature. Most studies (and husbands, boyfriends) will back this up. That is why twitter doesn’t match up to other social media platforms. Facebook, MySpace and all the others offer unlimited characters, more picture capability and other tools that lend themselves to a more verbose and sharing atmosphere.

I’m good with a couple of grunts and rarely need 140 characters. It works for me just fine and I rarely reach the character limit.
