The Johnston Firefighter's Association will be holding the Green Days Pancake Breakfast sponsored by Community State Bank. Chris Cakes of Iowa will be on hand to serve all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausage.  Station tours and apparatus viewing will also be available prior to the Green Days parade. For the seventh year, the Bill Riley Talent Search will be conducted at the Johnston Chamber of Commerce Green Days Festival. With a few changes in age divisions and talent requirements, it is open primarily to Johnston School District area students and will be judged by music professionals Jody White, Brent and Anne Peterson. A winner from the Junior and Senior divisions will advance to the 51st Iowa State Fair Bill Riley Talent Search Competition in August from which a senior grand champion wins a $7,000 scholarship.

Two categories of competition are determined by age at the time of winning in the Johnston June 16 show: Juniors 6 to 14 years and Seniors age 15 to 21 years. A third group for exhibition only are: Sprouts age 2 to 5 years.

Performance categories include:

• Vocalists: classical, country or contemporary;
• Dancers: tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, acrobatic or baton;
• Instrumentalists: classical or contemporary

One to five persons may perform in each 3-minute act, but contestants may only appear once in this show. For the first time ever, pre-recorded, single-instrument accompaniment without backing vocals will be allowed for vocalists. A piano accompanist is not counted as a performer. DVD/cassette accompaniment is allowed for dance acts, baton, etc. Drums and amps are discouraged due to the 1-minute set-up time. Rock bands or similar musical groups are not permitted, nor are professionals.

Contestant rules and further details will be sent to you upon receipt of your request. Talent and age categories are limited.

Top winners receive these cash prizes from Charter Bank:

• Seniors- $100 first place; $80 second; $60 third
• Juniors- $50 first place; $40 second; $30 third

Light the Night for Sight is an evening walk celebrating the gift of sight and emphasizing safe summer celebrations.  The walk is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of consumer fireworks, educate the public on the importance of sports eye safety and UV protection and provide information on how to preserve sight. 

Walkers will enjoy a stroll on the sidewalks and trails around the Johnston Library. There is no entry fee to participate, however walkers are encouraged to collect pledges. $100 in pledges will earn you a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt.
