Summer has so many positives: The food! The camping! The gardening! The sun not setting until 9PM! Unfortunately, we also have to deal with the stifling heat. I’m originally from the East Coast and it was a big adjustment moving to the Pacific Northwest where most houses, like our cabin, don’t have central AC. I’ve learned a lot of ways to stay cool without central AC for myself, but keeping the dogs cool in summer is just as important.

If your pet is experiencing an emergency, please notify your vet! It’s important to note that I am not a veterinarian. I’m just a pet owner and lover who has a lot of experience keeping my pets cool in the summer heat.

1. Always Provide Access to Fresh, Cool Water

This first tip is non-negotiable. Make sure your dog always has access to a bowl of clean, cool water in both indoors and outdoors. I like to keep a couple stylish dog bowls around the house and on my patio. I refill the bowls a couple of times a day during the summer to ensure that the dogs always have access to clean, fresh water.

For when we’re out and about, I also like a portable dog water bottle on hand. Dogs are so funny. They’re often not thirsty until they’re wildly thirsty and I like to be prepared for those situations.

2. Create Shaded Spaces Outdoors

If your dog spends any time outside during the day, make sure there are plenty of shady spots in your yard. My dogs love to sunbathe, but I always make sure there’s a spot they can wander over to when it gets too hot. We have lots of trees in our yard, but outdoor umbrellas and a dog shade tent can be a good way to keep dogs cool in the summer.

3. Use Fans and Cool Zones Inside to Keep Dogs Cool in the Summer

If you don’t have A/C, set up fans and cool spots for your dog to lounge indoors. Ceramic tile in the bathroom or kitchen will be cooler than carpet or a couch. This is where a cooling mat can come in handy too. Speaking of…

4. Use a Cooling Mat

If your dog loves a fan, they’re really going to love a cooling mat. Cooling mats are just what they sound like– a cooling mat that your dog can lay on to stay cool during the summer. This is a solid addition to your porch, crate, or car seat. And bonus: many cooling mats work without electricity. Instead, they contain a pressure-activated gel that absorbs heat. Keeping my electricity bill down in the summer is a win for me!

5. Walk Early or Late in the Day

Avoid walking your dog during the peak heat hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Instead, aim for early morning or evening walks when the ground and air are cooler. Remember to always test the pavement with your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws. When it’s extra hot, I like to opt for a walk in the woods where it’s cooler. If you live in an urban area and that’s not an option, shorter walks and booties to protect your dog’s paws from being burnt on hot pavement is a good choice. 

6. Set Up a Doggy Pool

A small, inflatable pool is my favorite way to stay cool during the summer and it’s my dog Diamond’s favorite way too. My little dogs don’t like the water as much, but if your dog is a fan of the water, I highly recommend a doggy pool. If you don’t want to commit to a pool, try a large underbed tupperware container or even a sprinkler. Be sure to keep the water shallow and always supervise your dog when using a pool. 

7. Cool Treats to Keep Dogs Cool in Summer

I don’t know about you but during a heatwave, I love nothing more than an afternoon popsicle treat. My dogs are no different! I like to give them treats kept in the fridge during the summer for this reason or dog-safe popsicles. 

8. Leave the Dogs at Home

I love to take my dogs on camping adventures, but sometimes during the summer an adventure can be… well… too adventurous in the heat. A hot car is not safe. If it’s extra hot, I’ll leave the dogs in the safety of our home, parked right in front of a fan.

9. Keep Up with Grooming (But Don’t Shave!)

Dogs need regular brushing to remove loose fur. All that extra hair can be hot! But shaving your dog’s coat completely can expose their skin to sunburn and actually make it harder to regulate temperature. When giving your dog a haircut, either ask your groomer for a summer trim or trim it short yourself. Never give your furry friend a full shave unless recommended by your vet. They can sunburn more easily with a full shave.

10. Know the Signs of Heatstroke in Dogs

Dogs don’t sweat like we do, so it’s important to know what overheating can look like to them. In dogs heatstroke can look like excessive panting, drooling, red or pale gums and weakness or vomiting. If you notice these signs, move your dog to a cool area and contact your vet immediately.

Knowing how to keep dogs cool in summer can be life-saving! Dogs truly make our lives a little better and if we can keep them a little more comfortable during the hot months, I’m all for it.

One of the reasons we chose our cabin is because of the beautiful, bright light. But there are still dark corners of our home that aren’t suitable for most plants. I consider plants essential for most spaces: they purify the air, add color and can even keep bugs away. A space may not have much light, but that just means you need easy indoor plants for low light. These plants are perfect for shady shelves or windowless bathrooms. I’m also recommending buying plants that are easy to find at most garden centers, but you can easily buy these plants online too. 

Why to Keep Plants in Your Home

There’s so many benefits to keeping plants in your home. They’re beautiful, obviously, and fun to style, but according to a study from the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, plants may make you feel less stressed! According to another study, plants may make you more productive too. As someone who works from home, I need all the help I can get! And in my opinion, plants are interesting. I love learning about plants, their functions and how to take care of them. It’s a skill I think that everyone should know.

The Best Easy Indoor Plants for Low Light Spaces

Low light spaces can be difficult for plants, but not impossible! There’s a saying in the gardening community: right plant, right place. This means that you just have to know which plants thrive in your specific area. I’ve recommended some low light houseplants before, but the plants below are particularly easy. Consider this your beginner guide!

Here’s five of my favorite easy indoor plants for low light spaces:

1. Pothos

Starting strong with pothos! Pothos are the easiest of the easy plants. They can get away with very little water, low light and they’re super easy to propagate, so you can make more plants. Pothos also like to trail, so they’re great for styling a bookshelf or a corner where they can drape dramatically off a shelf. 

2. Snake Plant

Snake plants are also known as sansevieria or mother-in-law’s tongue. And my love for the snake plant runs deep! Snake plants are great at improving air quality, look like a living sculpture and are one of the hardiest house plants out there. Snake plants only need watering when the soil has completely dried out, so this plant is perfect for the forgetful types.

3. ZZ Plant

The ZZ plant is known by a couple of names: ZZ, Zanzibar Gem and its scientific name: Zamioculcas Zamiifolia. ZZ plants have lush, dark green leaves and thrive in indirect or dappled light. This plant would be perfect in a corner across from a window or a spot near a north facing window. ZZ plants thrive on very little water, but it’s important to note that they are toxic to pets. If your pet likes to chew on leaves, stay away from this one.

4. Peace Lily

Most flowering plants like bright light, so it’s rare to find a plant that flowers and tolerates low light. If you’re looking for a classic plant that is easy to grow and works well in indirect or dim spots, then the peace lily is for you. Peace lilies aka spathiphyllum are classic houseplants for a reason. They’re incredibly easy to take care of, just keep the soil moist and mist every now and then.

5. Cast Iron Plant

Aspidistra elatior or the cast iron plants is one that lives up to its name. Just like cast iron, this plant is one of the hard to kill plants. What’s nice about these plants is they can tolerate a variety of temperatures. Sometimes you have to be careful on placing plants near radiators or drafts, but the cast iron plant can take varying conditions. Like most of the other plants I recommended, it also likes infrequent watering– perfect for frequent travelers.

Tips to Keep Low Light Plants Happy

• Don’t overwater. Too much love is the #1 killer of low light houseplants.
• Rotate them occasionally. Low light plants, just like all plants, like to be rotated, so each side of the plant gets access to light.
• Dust the leaves. Plants need to be able to breathe! If they’re dusty, give them a quick wipe with a damp cloth.

There’s the right plants for bedrooms, plants for bathrooms, plants for small spaces and even low light spaces if you know where to look. Start with something like these easy indoor plants for low light and before you know it, you’ll have a small collection and a new hobby! If all else fails, there’s always convincing faux plants too. Haha!

Over the last 15 years, semi flush mount lighting has come a long way in terms of design. Gone are the days when everyone had the same old “boob” light hanging in their entryway or hallway. Now semi flush mount lighting choices are more modern, sleek and dare I say, sexy?

What is the difference between semi flush mount lighting and flush mount lighting?

There is a key difference between flush mount lighting and semi flush mount lighting. Flush mount lighting hangs down less than four inches from the mounting plate to the fixture. Semi flush mounts hang down less than eight inches. Semi flush mount light fixtures are similar to pendant lighting, but have a more compact profile.

Note that some retailers won’t distinguish between flush and semi flush, so always take a look at the details of the light before hitting that “buy” button. Function is just as important as style, so get out your measuring tapes before purchase!

I work from home literally every day, but that hasn’t exactly meant my office was great. For many years, my office was a bit of a dumping ground for renovation project materials, content creation props for my freelance clients and so many stacks of random bits of paper. It got really overwhelming and just was not an inspiring space. So I decided to get serious about making the home office of my dreams. I was lucky enough to partner with both Select Blinds and Article on Instagram content for it, so today I wanted to share the details of the entire room and talk through my design choices. All About My Cozy Cabin Home Office Makeover

Before Photos

Here’s what the room looked like in September 2020: overwhelmingly purple! It was formerly home to two small girls and many, many pets.

In 2021, I started the official makeover of this space when I transformed half of it into our gear room and the other half into den. It worked well for us for a bit, but then I got a bee in my bonnet about my office (which is now our actual TV room). That room had a very sloped ceiling so I could only stand up in half the room. It’s also the smallest room in the house and not very inspiring.

As the primary income earner for our household, it just didn’t make sense that my office (arguably one of the most important spaces in the house) was in the smallest, shortest rooms. So one afternoon I convinced Sean to swap the den and the office with me—and it’s been the BEST decision.

In 2022, I teamed up with Walmart and Better Homes & Gardens to deck out the office with shelving and tons of storage, which you can see below. This set up worked well for me for a couple of years. I loved having this quantity of storage, plus a cozy spot to sit and do work from my phone like video editing.

But then, the mice came. See all of those fabric storage bins? The mice got into each and every one of them, making a huge mess. We’re forever battling the mice out here in the cabin, so this was a disappointing discovery. I knew at this point that I really needed closed storage that they couldn’t get into.

After Photos: My Cozy Cabin Home Office Reveal

I am SO excited to break down each detail of this home office refresh. From the stylish standing desk to the cozy lounge chair and storage, I am beyond happy with how it turned out—and so much more inspired! Let’s chat details.

A Stylish Standing Desk

I am obsessed with having a standing desk. It makes me so much more productive and focused, plus it really helps my back when I am stuck at my desk for hours on end trying to meet a deadline. I work a LOT and don’t want to sit the entire time. I also recently upgraded the office with a desk treadmill and it’s AMAZING, especially during meetings.

But let’s go back to the standing desk because it is the main star of the show. If you saw my small space home office in our previous home, you know I had one from Fully. It still worked completely fine, but the problem is that I got it when we had a really small space and now that I have more room, I needed a larger surface. This one from Article totally fit the bill AND I love that the top of it is wooden. The white surface on the other one got stained way too easily.

It’s got all the good features, too, like 3 programmable presets and an anti-collision safety setting. But I really just love the high-quality materials and how smooth the desk lifts and lowers.

Stylish Office Storage

I also desperately needed storage that was stylish, but also super-functional. I chose this white oak sideboard because it’s SO cute. But also because it has tons of closed storage, perfect for keeping the mice out. My favorite part are the drawers because they are massive and hold SO much. It makes me so happy to see all of my camera gear organized neatly and ready to be used.

A Cozy Lounge Chair

I also needed a spot where I could sit and edit videos away from my computer—or so the dogs could hang out with me while I work! I am fully obsessed with this shearling chair. It’s so comfortable and the color is the perfect neutral. Not gonna lie, I either need to buy a second one or move it to the living room because I love it so much. I added a side table next to it for my ubiquitous cup of coffee and whatever else I need while I’m editing video on my phone.

Giddy up, I’ve officially kicked off a new renovation project: our guest bathroom! If you’ve been following me on Instagram, Tiktok or YouTube, you know that we’re already deep into the throes of this bathroom makeover. But I want to go even deeper with you on this project and share even more info about my design plan, why we’re making certain choices and give you more of a peek into the entire project. This is a long one, so grab a coffee and a snack!

All About The Bath Cave: Our Cabin Guest Bathroom Makeover

The Guest Bath Before:

As you may recall, when we moved into the cabin in September 2020, the original bathroom as beige, boring and screamed early 1990s. It had builder-grade tile, a fiberglass shower and tub insert and basically zero character. Oh, and a really weird vanity shoved into the corner than smelled horrible.

Then in 2021, I teamed up with Walmart and Better Homes & Gardens to transform the guest bathroom with a ‘skinny makeover.’ I didn’t have a ton of budget, so I focused mostly on cosmetic updates to make it look more my aesthetic. This is one of the first renovation projects we tackled in the cabin and, to this day, it’s still one of my favorites because it was a testament to what you can do with a bit of creative thinking even on a really tight budget.

The updates for the first round of guest bath updates were:

• A new toilet
• Installing beadboard (Ieftovers from our primary bedroom) + fresh paint
• Removing the tile and installing Chasing Paper peel & stick flooring — side note: I am SHOCKED by how well that tile held up for nearly 4 years! Highly recommend using it because it also came up very easily.
• New fixtures: lighting, artwork, shower curtain, etc

We also repurposed a lot of existing things like the pedestal sink and a white storage cabinet that you may recognize from the bathroom in my tiny bungalow (my first house). And if you’ve been here even longer, you know that the mirror is from my loft bathroom!

Then, in 2023 we added a washer and dryer to the space, making it a combo laundry room and guest bathroom. We made this change because eventually I want to turn the laundry closet (the laundry “room” that the cabin originally came with) into the primary bathroom’s shower so that there could be room to move the vanity into the bathroom and out of the primary bedroom—because don’t forget: the primary bathroom vanity is literally next to where we sleep.

The thing is… I hated having the laundry in the guest bathroom. As you can see in my video below, the space was just way too tight and the dryer door nearly touched the edge of the sink. The machines were really low and, ahem, in my old age I now prefer top loading vs front loading. So currently we are back to using the laundry closet. But fear not, I already have a plan for where they will go so I can still use the closet space for the primary shower. There is ALWAYS A PLAN!

Key Updates for the Guest Bathroom:

Before I dive into the aesthetics of the project, let’s talk about our list of needs for this room:

Linen & Toiletry Storage

Even though our house is nearly 2000 sqft, our closet storage is lacking. And given that we are forever battling mice getting into literally everything, we need more closed storage. I would do wild things in exchange for a proper linen closet.

More Open Space

The bathroom has always felt really cramped and confined, especially the bath tub and shower. Because it’s a fiberglass insert, there’s a ton of wasted space. Every time I’ve showered in there, my elbows hit the wall and that just is not the experience I want guests to have when they visit us!

Removing the Bath Tub

On a similar note, we are doing something controversial: we’re removing the bath tub and only doing a glass shower enclosure! While the tub was convenient for washing the dogs, it also really limited our options for the project in general. I also had some major issues sourcing a tub that would fit in the limited amount of space we have that wasn’t insanely expensive or custom.

The Smell

This bathroom has always smelled weird. ALWAYS. From the mummified mice in the walls that we know are there to potential openness to the crawlspace, there are a lot of mistakes we need to fix in order to resolve this problem.

DIY

I guess I should also mention that we are doing this entire bathroom renovation OURSELVES. It’s nearly impossible to find contractors that will come all the way out here, and quite frankly, I know we can handle this project. It’s true we’ve never fully renovated a bathroom together, but I’m not worried. We’re scrappy, have all the tools we need and can figure out most things thanks to YouTube.

Why is it called The Bath Cave?

You know me, I like to name every project that we do with something quirky. This name came about because there was literally once a bath trapped in the bathroom—but it’s also just a really dark, chilly space. The tiny window is north facing so it doesn’t get much natural light and I have a suspicion that it needs better insulation so that it isn’t as cold all the time.

And now, the fun part! These two images are my primary source of inspiration. Here’s what I’m pulling from each as inspiration for my guest bath design:

This bathroom actually inspired the skinny makeover we did in 2021 and it’s going to continue to inspire this complete overhaul because I’m that obsessed with it!

What I Like:

• The black beadboard: we’re updating the current beadboard, but will be painting it a fresh shade of black or black-grey
• Wallpaper: I want to incorporate more print and pattern into our cabin in general, so I’m starting with this project. I want something botanical and folkloric like in this image, but lighter in color so that there’s more contrast.
• Round mirror
• Statement sink: I wish I had budget for a stone sink like this! While that’s definitely a pipe dream, I can still achieve a similar look with a console sink that has interesting details.

This inspiration image is another I’ve been holding onto FOREVER. I am obsessed with the tile they did in this space. Because we’re DIYing the entire project, yours truly will be the one installing the tile… for the first time ever. NO PRESSURE.

As we were planning this project, I realized that the tile shape needed to be basic for a few reasons including ease of installation and budget. Simply put, squares are easier to install and cost way less than a fancy shape. The inspiration image covers all the bases for me because it utilizes squares in a way that looks like a plaid because of the color tones used. And I happen to be extremely obsessed with plaid, so it’s a win-win on all levels!

Guest Bathroom Moodboard

After approximately 43,492 hours, I finally have a moodboard for this project that I’m happy with and feel good in showing you! Honestly, getting my designs to a spot where I love them takes me so long. I spend countless hours scrolling Pinterest and updating moodboards until it’s just right (you can learn more about my design process here).

As you can see, I’m going for DRAMA with the black beadboard, but opting for more contrast with a lighter toned wallpaper. The print of the wallpaper is very Scandi-cabin without feeling super cliché. The finishes will be polished chrome and polished nickel, plus neutral textiles to soften things. The scalloped mirror adds visual interest and charm, too.

I want the color palette to feel soothing and natural—and quintessential cabin vibes. It feels like a departure from the more colorful rooms in our home, but to me that means that it feels more sophisticated and ‘grown up.’ When I was thinking of the rooms in our house that I love the most, the changes I made to the primary bedroom came to mind first. There’s power in layered neutrals and there’s always opportunity to add intentional pops of color in the future.

How to Use the Right Keywords on Facebook Marketplace

When you start searching Facebook Marketplace, the right keywords can make a world of difference. If you don’t know the right terms, it’s easy to miss out on great finds. Brainstorm a little about what you’re specifically looking for and use those terms in your search.

For example, instead of just searching “couch,” also words like “sectional,” “sofa” or even “love seat.” Some people will name items in a more specific way and some people simply mislabel things! 

If your results are too overwhelming, try narrowing it down with specific terms like “mid-century couch” or “leather sectional.” If you’re after a specific color, like “navy blue chair,” include that in your search, too. You can also try searching for popular brands or materials, like “Ikea dresser” or “wooden dining table” to further narrow things down. Being specific is helpful if there’s a lot of options in your search. If you find that there aren’t enough options, refer back to initial keywords and search for some synonyms.

How to Set Up Notifications in Facebook Marketplace

If you’re short on time, set up notifications for the item you want to find! When you do a search, there’s an option to save your search and turn on notifications. Facebook will then alert you via email whenever a new listing that matches your search pops up. This is especially helpful if you’re looking for something rare or you are short on time. 

By getting these notifications, you won’t miss out on a great deal, and you can be the first to reach out to sellers. Highly sought-after items can go quick, so being the first one to see the listing is a big advantage. 

Check Photos and Descriptions of the Item Carefully

Before you get too excited on Facebook Marketplace, always make sure to carefully check the photos and descriptions of the items. Sellers usually upload a few pictures of the furniture, but it’s good to make sure they’ve covered all angles and highlighted any imperfections. A thorough description will also help you understand the size, condition and any other important details like whether or not it comes fully assembled or needs to some work.

If something isn’t clear, don’t hesitate to message the seller and ask for more information or additional pictures. It’s always better to ask before wasting your time driving to the location only to be disappointed.

Don’t Be Afraid to Negotiate

One of the best things about Facebook Marketplace is that many sellers are open to negotiation. If you see something you love but it’s just a bit out of your budget, try messaging the seller with a polite offer. Sometimes, sellers are willing to lower the price, especially if the item has been up for a while or if you offer to get the item that day.

Just remember to be respectful in your approach. Everyone wants to get a good deal, but being kind will go a long way to possibly getting a lower price. 

Check or Ask for the Facebook Marketplace Seller’s Preferences

Some sellers will want you to pick up an item, but some will deliver for a fee. This is a really convenient option if it’s something large and you don’t have a truck. 

Also, be sure to ask if the seller prefers cash. Some sellers won’t accept digital payments. 

Check Seller Profiles, Reviews & Stay Safe

Another helpful Facebook Marketplace tip is to check out the seller’s profile. Facebook allows users to leave reviews or ratings for transactions, so take a look at what other buyers have said about their experience. A seller with positive feedback is usually a safer bet. If a seller doesn’t have any reviews or you feel unsure, don’t hesitate to ask them more about the item.

Also be sure to only use the Facebook Messenger app to talk to sellers. They don’t need your personal number. Always meet a seller in public, well-lit, safe places. If you can, bring a friend to the meet up and be aware of your surroundings. Most sellers are decent people, but it’s safer to take a few precautions. 

Be Patient and Persistent to Find the Best Furnishings on Facebook Marketplace

Lastly, remember that patience is a virtue when it comes to shopping on Facebook Marketplace. In urban areas, listings are added by users every day. But it might take a while to find that perfect piece at the right price, especially if you live in a remote cabin like I do. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t find what you’re looking for immediately. Keep checking in and searching frequently. Facebook Marketplace will usually come through, it may just take a bit more time.

Have you ever heard of seed swaps or seed libraries? Seed swaps and seed libraries are community-driven programs that allow gardeners to exchange seeds. If you’re tight on cash, this can be a smart way to grow your garden without spending money. It’s also a way to build community in your area.

Seed Swaps are where local gardeners get together to exchange seeds. These events will vary from location to location, but check out local gardening groups or community centers for more information. If you’re in the Skagit County area, I highly recommend the Skagit-Whatcom Seed Swap!

Many libraries also offer seed libraries. These libraries allow you to take seeds home, plant them and return new seeds from your harvest with no cost to you. You can even check out other helpful things like a soil test kit!

If you’ve ever have the absolute pleasure of going through a renovation, you know that some days it feels like your home is just stealing money from you! Then, you finally get to the fun part of decorating and you’re scrounging for change in your couch cushions. I’ve been there and it’s not my fave. Luckily, decorating your home doesn’t have to be expensive because budget home decor stores are more prevalent than ever. Here are 7 of my favorite stores for inexpensive home decor that works for any design style!

Where to Shop for Inexpensive Home Decor

1. Thrift Stores

Thrift stores will forever be my favorite places to score home decor on a budget. In fact, there’s some things I always buy secondhand. Because thrift stores’ inventory is always changing, it’s always unique. You truly never know what treasures you are going to find. Although I think the hunt is fun, it can be overwhelming too. So, follow these tips:

• Go often. Learn which day of the week your thrift store puts out new items. This is your best chance to score home decor before it’s picked over by other shoppers.
• Be patient. It can take a bit of time before you find exactly what you need at the thrift store.
• Keep a list on your phone. I use the Notes app to make a list of all the things I should keep an eye out for while thrifting since I usually don’t remember in the moment.
• Be open to DIY. Consider if it’s something you’d be able to easily paint, refinish or reupholster. Sometimes the deal is too good to pass up!
• Shop online. Goodwill has an online store that’s open 24/7. If you can’t make it to a physical location or browsing online is easier, this is a good option for vintage home decor.

2. Facebook Marketplace for Inexpensive Home Decor

Facebook Marketplace has become the place to find secondhand home goods and decor in your area. FB Marketplace is always open and it’s a resource used in both rural and metropolitan areas. In my opinion, the painful part of Facebook Marketplace can be dealing with the messages of individual sellers. Here’s my best tips for scoring a deal on Facebook Marketplace:

• Watch out for scammers. If someone wants payment in advance, walk away!

• Set alerts for items you are interested in, so you’ll be the first to know when something is posted.

3. Etsy for Inexpensive Home Decor

Although prices on Etsy can vary, there are plenty of affordable options. You can filter by price range and shipping location to find decor that suits both your budget and style. Plus, if you’re looking for something specific, Etsy’s sellers can often accommodate custom requests.

For more specific or hard-to-find decor, eBay is an underrated resource. eBay isn’t just for collectables or electronics. Vintage pieces, discontinued items and even modern home decor can be found at lower prices than you’d expect. And if you collect a specific item or genre of decor, it’s one of my favorite ways to shop.

• Set up alerts for items that you’re interested in to get notified when they are listed. If you really want to be in the know, allow the eBay app to send you notifications.
• Read item descriptions carefully to ensure you’re getting what you expect and don’t be afraid to message sellers to ask clarifying questions. Be suer to look at the shipping info, too, so you’re not shocked by the total amount due.
• Don’t get carried away with the auction format. Stick to a price you’re comfortable paying to avoid blowing your budget or choose items with a “buy now” option.

5. IKEA for Inexpensive Home Decor

IKEA is the OG of budget home decor stores— and it’s popular for a reason. IKEA has amazing practical storage solutions for small spaces, styles that fit most homes and their prices can’t be beat. I like to think of many IKEA pieces as the classic white tee of home decor. It’s basic, gets the job done and won’t break the bank.

Tips for Shopping at IKEA:

• If shopping in-store, check out the As-Is section for discounted items.
• Remember, some things at IKEA are online, but some are only available at a physical location. Their website will indicate what is available where.
• Get creative. Consider adding your personal touch to liven up basic pieces. “IKEA hacking” is a whole thing!

6. Amazon for Inexpensive Home Decor

If you’re on a time crunch, Amazon can be a good resource for budget home decor. Their super fast shipping and wide range of items really can’t be beat, especially if you’re looking for something very specific or niche. For example, Amazon is especially convenient when you’re looking for those decor odds and ends like shower curtain hooks or warm light bulbs.

Tips for Shopping on Amazon:

• Check reviews and ratings before purchasing. Not everything will be high quality or long-lasting. I also like to see the review photos because they help me better judge the scale of an item.
• If you have Amazon Prime, use it for faster shipping and exclusive deals like “Prime Day.”
• Filter search results by price and look for the best value.

7. Wayfair for Inexpensive Home Decor

Anybody else get the Wayfair jingle stuck in their head? Well, it’s a jingle that rings true (pun intended) because they often do have just what I need. Wayfair carries everything from bathroom vanities and tile, to light fixtures, to couches. They don’t specialize in budget decor, so you’ll have to sort by price, but the bargains are out there!

Tips for Shopping on Wayfair:

• Wayfair often has sales, so sign up for email newsletters to stay up-to-date.
• Check customer reviews and customer submitted photos to help make your decision.
• Double-check the shipping. Sometimes free shipping is available on large purchases, but in some cases you may have to pay for delivery.

Final Tips When Shopping for Inexpensive Home Decor

One of the best things you can do when on a budget is practice your patience! Wait for sales and wait until you find the perfect item. It’s always more expensive to buy something and have to return it, or even worse, have to live with it. By practicing a little bit of patience, you’ll be able to find the perfect pieces at the right price. Remember: decorating your home is a marathon, not a sprint!

By March I’m itching to get out in the garden. Unfortunately in my 8B zone, it’s still too cold to put plants into the ground. Luckily, I manage to get my fix by learning how to start seeds indoors. By starting seeds indoors, I get a jump on growing healthy plants, I can have an earlier harvest for my vegetables and I can even do some succession planting to get the most out of a shorter growing season, among other benefits.

Starting seeds indoors doesn’t require a greenhouse either! All you need is a sunny window. Read along for a full guide and the best tips and tricks on how to start seeds indoors.

The Benefits of Starting Seeds Indoors

Other than the health benefits of gardening, starting seeds indoors has a ton of benefits.

Longer Growing Season

Starting seeds indoors gives those tiny baby plants a healthy opportunity to thrive before the outdoor growing season in your area. For places like where I live, we have a shorter growing season due to a colder climate. This means by starting seeds indoors, it ensures your plants are ready to go in the ground as soon as the weather is favorable, maximizing your growing time and increasing your produce or flowers.

Control Over Environment

When plants are grown indoors, you can control the temperature, light and humidity of the space. This gives your seeds the best chance to germinate and grow strong without the threats of pests, unpredictable weather or whatever Mother Nature throws at you.

Stronger, Healthier Plants

By having control over the environment, you’re also increasing your chances to grow strong, healthy seedlings that are more likely to thrive once transplanted outdoors. Plant starts that have had consistent warmth and sunshine are more likely to be stronger and larger than plants that have been started in an inconsistent outdoor environment.

Succession Planting

Succession planting is when you start stagger planting by planting out some starts earlier than others to maximize the harvest and minimize threats. When seed starting, you could plant some tomato seeds, for example, in the beginning and some at the end of May. That way, instead of putting all your tomato plants in the ground all at once, you stagger them. Staggering aka succession planting can prevent you from having way too much produce at one time. It also helps if some of your first round of plants get taken out by late frost.

Lower Cost

Growing plants from seed is much cheaper than buying fully grown plants or even seedlings from the garden center. Starting your own seeds saves money and you can access a wider variety of plants than you could find at most nurseries. For example, heirloom varieties are often a bit more expensive and by planting seeds, you can get those plants for a much cheaper rate.

Where to Place Seed Starts Indoors

Maybe you have a small house and not much room to dedicate to growing. That’s ok! (In that case, you also may be interested in the best houseplants for small spaces.) You don’t need to dedicate a full room in your home or fancy equipment when starting seeds indoors either. A sunny windowsill can provide plenty of space!

Any of the following spaces will be helpful starting seeds indoors, just remember to avoid cold, drafty areas. You don’t want to place your delicate seed starts near uninsulated windows or in a place where there may be wild temperature fluctuations. Tender seedlings like consistent, warm areas.

Ideas for Where to Place Seed Starts Indoors

A Sunny, Warm Window

Most seeds need 6-8 hours of sunlight to germinate. A south-facing window tends to be best because it will provide the most sunlight. Be sure to continuously check on your seeds to ensure they aren’t burning. We don’t want to scald the tender seedlings either! Lastly, make sure to turn your seed trays. You don’t want some seedlings hogging all the light or becoming “leggy.”

Under Grow Lights

If you don’t have a spot in your home with 6-8 hours of sunlight, you may want to invest in grow lights. Grow lights provide consistent and reliable light to your seedlings. Keep the lights on for 12-16 hours per day to mimics the outdoors at this time of year. Grow lights are nice because they allow you to put the seeds almost anywhere in your home including basements and dark corners.

Don’t forget warmth!

Seeds like warmth too, so don’t forget that element when setting up your indoor seed growing area. If your house tends to be cold or you are keeping your starts in the basement or on the floor, you may want to consider buying a heat mat. A heat mat will provide the seeds with continuous heat regardless of fluctuating temperatures indoors or out!

How to Start Seeds Indoors

Read Your Seed Packets!

I cannot stress this point enough! Read the back of your seed packets! The back of the packet will tell you everything you usually need to know about the seeds, including whether or not your seeds like to be transplanted. Transplanting is when you grow a plant from seed in a small container or pot, then transplant them into the ground later. Not all plants like to be transplanted. In fact, some won’t make it if you transplant them. Corn and root vegetables, for example, don’t like to be transplanted.

The back of the seed packet will often also indicate when you should plant your seeds for your area. If the packet doesn’t tell you this, a quick Google search will!

Prepare Your Containers or Soil Blocks

If you are on a strict budget or just starting out, you can start seeds in upcycled yogurt containers or even toilet paper rolls. Just make sure that your container has proper drainage. For most seeds, containers that are 2-3 inches deep are fine. You can also always transplant to a larger container before putting your plants into the ground.

Sometimes garden centers will also give away old pots. Just be sure to sanitize reused pots, so you don’t spread any possible diseases.

If you want to level up, seed trays are the way to go. Seed trays, in my experience, make seedlings much easier to move and often come with a cover. This is helpful when you have seeds that prefer a lot of humidity and require misting or just need to stay damp.

Soil Blocking

If you want to level up and be more environmentally conscious, try soil blocking! Soil blocking is a way to start seeds that is completely plastic-free. With soil blocking, you use a handheld soil blocker to compact soil into a block that the seed is then directly planted into. Soil blocking also may be better for the plant because the roots aren’t bound up in a pot. This means the roots get more oxygen which helps growth. I’m trying soil blocking this year and so far, so good!

Prepare Your Soil

Potting soil for seeds is different than your everyday garden soil because regular garden soil can be too heavy for seedlings to poke through. Seed starting mixes usually contain materials like perlite, vermiculite and coconut coir to help make the soil light and help the seeds retain moisture.

Plant the Seeds!

First, fill the containers with the seed starting mix. You’ll want to leave about an inch from the top of the container, so the soil doesn’t spill over when watering. Then plant the seeds in the soil according to instructions on the seed packet. Some seeds need to be planted close to the surface, where as others require a depth 2-3 times the seed size. Lastly, gently press down the soil to ensure the seed is in contact with the soil.

Label

It’s funny how many times think “I’m going to remember what this plant is” and I never do. Haha! Don’t be like me, label your seedlings! This is especially important when you have different varieties of the same plant and they all look the same. I like this indelible garden marker and these labels, but you can also just use a Sharpie and some tape.

Water Gently!

You’ve put so much time and effort into planting, so be sure to water gently! You don’t want to have all your hard work float away. Use a watering can with a fine sprayer, or if your planting seeds like lettuce that can easily get washed away, place your seedlings in a shallow tray of water to soak up water from the bottom.

Thin seedlings

Some seedlings, depending on how they like to be planted, also need to be thinned. This means plucking out the smaller, weaker seedlings to prevent over-crowding. Vegetables like lettuces, radishes, kale and carrots all need to be thinned once they produce their first “true leaves.” True leaves are the second set of leaves to grow on a seedling.

Harden Off

Before popping your seedlings into the ground outside, you’ll need to “harden” them off by acclimating them to outdoor conditions a little bit at a time. Make sure this is after your areas last frost date.

First place them in a sheltered, shady area for a few hours a day. Then after a few days, gradually increase their sunlight until your seedlings have fully hardened off after about 10 days. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather too. Even though your plants are going through a hardening off period, this doesn’t mean that they need to sit through a freak frost or torrential downpours. You can still bring them inside for short periods if the weather isn’t cooperating.

Transplant

After your plants have been hardened off, transplant them into your garden, or into larger pots if you are doing a container garden. Either way, make sure the soil is loose and that you water the plant in well after planting.

Tips and Tricks for Starting Seeds Indoors

Don’t reuse old soil

It’s tempting to reuse soil from last year’s containers, but there’s a few problems with that. First, the soil could have diseases in it that could kill or inhibit the growth of your new plants. Additionally, the soil is depleted of nutrients from its previous use. I like to add old soil to my compost pile.

Clean and sanitize your tools and containers

We all want to be lazy and skip this, but always clean and sanitize your tools and containers. Your tools and old containers can harbor diseases or mold– neither of which you want to introduce into your garden. To clean, I like to rinse off my tools and containers with a hose to get off any initial debris. Then, I’ll go in with a brush to get off anything that the hose couldn’t take off. Next, I dunk in a gallon of water with 1/8 of a teaspoon of bleach. This small amount of bleach is enough to kill anything lingering. Then, let air dry and your tools or containers are sanitized.

Don’t fertilize seedlings

It’s understandable– you want your seedlings to do their best and adding fertilizer makes sense, right? Wrong unfortunately. Seedlings are delicate and easily be burned by fertilizer, so wait on fertilizer until you’ve transplanted the plants into their final spot.

Even with knowing your style, you still may be overwhelmed with the choices on Etsy. This is where a filter can come in handy. On Etsy you can filter by price range, location, material, color, size and more to get a truly tailored shopping experience. If I wanted a blue ceramic vase, for example, I’d put in a price range from $0-$200, United States, blue and minimalist.

3. Check reviews

By checking a shop’s reviews, you may notice something you missed. Perhaps the seller only ships on Mondays or your item will arrive in a recycled box. Reviews can also help give you peace of mind that the shop is a 5 star experience.

4. Check shop policies

Be sure to also check the shop policies of the seller. The shop policies will indicate what payments they accept, as well as if the item is available for returns or exchanges.

5. Peruse other items in that Etsy home decor seller’s store

If you find something you like, I’d encourage you to also click over to the other items in that seller’s store. Oftentimes shops will have a theme like linen pillows or Pyrex bowls. You may find more decor that you “need!”

6. Pay attention to shipping times

Since Etsy is run by individual shop owners, there may be varying shipping times. Etsy is a global marketplace, so items may also be coming from all over the world. Be sure to pay attention to shipping times to avoid disappointment.

7. “Heart” Etsy home decor items to come back to later

It’s smart to take a beat before making a purchase, especially something you are going to live with for a long time, like home decor. By “hearting” items on Etsy, you can save them to come back to and buy later after thinking it over.

8. Leave a review

After you’ve received your item, it’s helpful to leave a review for the shop owner and for future customers. It’s good karma to leave reviews, especially to small business owners.

Don’t even get me started on asking where the hell 2024 went. Last year felt like the blink of an eye! But now it’s 2025 and I really need to get my butt in gear thinking about and planning my next batch of cabin renovations and projects. I share renovation goals annually—sometimes they pan out and sometimes I prefer to be outside or reading or generally not living in a construction site. So let’s dive into what I had hoped to accomplish last year, what actually got done and what I want to (try to) focus on in 2025!

2024 Cabin Renovation Recap

I always enjoy reflecting on our past goals before establishing fresh ones. Let’s take a brief look back at what we achieved in 2024:

Cat Hell aka My Purrfect Purple Pantry

Truly THE defining renovation project of 2024 for me and my social media accounts! Do I still owe this blog a Cat Hell recap? Yes. But did that pantry makeover totally transform my entire life also? Yes! In case you missed it, basically I transformed our root cellar, which the previous owners had used for their cats’ litter boxes, into an amazing pantry. You can see the reveal here (and here’s a link to the cost breakdown in case you’re curious!). It turned out so well and has been an amazing addition to daily life here in our cabin. And before you ask… yeah there are still a lot of small things that aren’t finished down there. Naturally.

Finishing the Primary Bathroom Refresh

After the orange bathroom debacle, I refreshed the primary bathroom in 2023… and then didn’t finish it until November of 2024. But hey, that counts, right?? Say yes. Finishing the project meant installing our fancy new Toto Washlet (which I highly recommend, btw), finally putting down the last 8 floor tiles and adding a few decor touches like a thrifted mirror. Oh and putting the toilet paper holder back on the wall which had fallen off literally minutes after I installed it and then sat on the floor for at least 13 months.

Expanding My Vegetable Garden & Landscaping

As soon as summer hits, my garden and landscaping projects take precedent over pretty much everything. So 2024 saw lots more growth (pun intended) in the garden, plus a lot more landscaping in the garden beds in front of our living room windows. Plus, we got ducks to help with my slug issues and provide eggs during the winter months when the chickens aren’t laying. I also scored an amazing FREE greenhouse, so you’ll be seeing more of that once I come up with a plan for it.

Updating the Library Nook

The library nook was one of the first reveals that I shared of our cabin, ever, and really needed some updating. Not only did I absorb a massive collection of art books when Andy sold his house, it’s grown because I love reading. I installed heavy duty brackets and used inexpensive wooden boards that I painted white to open up the space a bit more. It’s so pleasing to look at from various angles around the cabin! I still need to install flooring in that section of the house and add an electrical outlet (it’s the one spot in the house without a single outlet—wild!).

2025 Cabin Renovation Goals:

One Big Renovation: Either the Kitchen or a Bathroom—For Real This Time!

Now that I know how much my online community enjoys me documenting a renovation start to finish with weekly/twice a week video updates, I have SO MANY IDEAS on what to do next. At a high level, my goal is to have at least one major renovation series that I can share on social media and this blog per year, if not two. Spoiler alert: I am in the planing stages of one right now and hope to start sharing it in the next couple of weeks. Be sure to follow me on Instagram to see it (and I guess TikTok even though as of writing this blog post it could get banned).

New Flooring Throughout the Cabin

And while we’re on the topic of major cabin renovation projects that have a 50/50 chance of actually getting done… I desperately want to replace the early ’90s first gen laminate flooring that covers our main floor. The color is all wrong, it’s got so much damage and it never looks clean. I would love having consistent flooring throughout the house, but I’m not sure how that would work with the TV room floor being natural cedar planks and the gear room/office being parquet. But that’s a problem to figure out once the project is actually going to happen.

At this point, having the main living area flooring up in the air is a major issue in terms of starting a proper kitchen renovation. The flooring goes under the existing cabinets and I wouldn’t want to install anything new over a floor that I loathe and has massive water damage. So, really, that’s step one in getting a proper kitchen designed and installed.

Actually Finish Projects—Yes, Again

It can’t possible be a secret anymore that I struggle to actually finish projects, especially for my larger cabin renovations. So once again, I am aiming to finish more projects in 2025. Here’s a long list that barely scratches the surface if we’re being completely transparent here (most of which are carryovers from 2024):

• paint touch ups in primary bedroom
• paint and install outlet covers and switch plates in office/gear room and primary bedroom
• patch holes from hanging art
• fix step in bedroom
• sand down doors that have paint drips and repaint
• Install new door for Cat Hell
• Use existing Cat Hell door as a door to the water heater closet in the primary bedroom
• lighting on catwalk upstairs
• flooring in guest bedroom
• select quality furniture for key areas to replace items that don’t fit or are falling apart: sofa in the living room and dining table, specificially
• continue expanding the garden
• finish front yard landscaping with a cut flower garden
• create an artist’s studio space in Sean’s shop where I can create and paint and get away from technology
• Install a real closet in the primary bedroom
• Setting up the greenhouse so it’s functional and cute

Eff, that list looks daunting. Even if we accomplish half of it, I’d be happy and proud. So we’ll see what actually gets done, but even just mapping it out like this helps me to stay accountable.
