127-year-old man rides up to vote in Himachal

Bhadaru, a 127-year-old man who is the oldest voter in Himachal Pradesh, rode a horse to the polling station to exercised his franchise Wednesday, an official said.

'Bhadaru voted at the polling station number 35 in the Kasumpti constituency that comes under the Shimla parliamentary constituency,' state's chief electoral officer Anil Khachi told IANS.

The polling station was four km from Bhadaru's house and he travelled on horseback to cast his vote.

He apparently didn't like reporters' queries about his age. 'Why are you asking me again and again about my age? I am not getting (old age) pension. I don't know why it stopped and when. The Congress government was good in administration.'

He refused to reveal who he voted for in this election but said he had 'voted for Jawaharlal Nehru in the first election (1952)'.

As per electoral rolls, 2,003 voters in Himachal Pradesh are above 90, of which 800 have crossed 100.
From the Shimla constituency, Virender Kashyap of the state's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is pitted against the sitting MP, Dhani Ram Shandil of the Congress.

CBI finds Raju's laptops difficult to crack

The Central Bureau of Investigation, investigating the financial scam at Satyam Computer Services, is finding it difficult to crack the content of the two laptops that belong to the company's founder, B Ramalinga Raju. It is now sourcing special accessories to unearth the data stored in them.

The CBI had seized many computers, laptops and hard disks from the houses of Raju, former chief financial officer Srinivas Vadlamani and other accused.A CBI official who is part of the multi-disciplinary probe team, said some computers and laptops had been referred to the Government Examiner of Questioned Documents (GEQD).

"We could not access the data in the two Apple Macintosh laptops. They require special accessories and we are getting them," he said. Also, the CBI is now preparing a supplementary chargesheet to highlight new findings or observations.

Meanwhile, the CBI is awaiting the reports of the specimen signature analysis from the GEQD. The CBI has collected about 50 signature samples of Ramalinga Raju, his brother and former managing director, B Rama Raju, former chief financial officer Vadlamani, and two Price Waterhouse auditors, S Gopalakrishna and Srinivas Talluri.

The GEQD reports would strengthen the CBI's argument that Raju and his aides had signed certain documents, which would be key in proving criminal conspiracy charges against them.Meanwhile, the fourth metropolitan sessions judge posted the orders on the bail petitions of the Raju brothers and Vadlamani for tomorrow. The defence counsel argued that there was no question of diversion of money as none existed in the first place.

Objecting to this, the public prosecutor questioned the need for the accused to hide the company's affairs, including infusing funds, taking loans for the company and forging fixed deposit receipts from other directors. There was evidence that other employees helped in the scam on instructions from top officials, he said. They inflated the accounts to protect their positions and to get better dividends for their shares, he said, adding that the family members offloaded their shares when the price peaked above Rs 600.

Twist the knob on the side to adjust the water temperature, and move the "nose" to a level position to stop the water flow. The farther up or down you move it, the faster the water flows.

It's a concept from Köhler Design, a German group of designers not to be confused with the all-American Kohler Company, toilet makers to the stars, and creator of faucets that qualify as works of art. Maybe the two should team up and get this unique faucet into bathrooms across the world, pronto.

Either that, or we're getting one of those toothbrushes that also gives you water-fountain capability. Because really, how do you rinse after brushing? Put your mouth on the faucet? Use a messy cup that invariably gets caked with all that toothpaste on your mouth? Or cup your hands under the faucet?

Indian-American gets 10-year jail for $12.5 mn fraud

Washington, May 14 (IANS) An Indian-American investment adviser has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following his conviction on 20 counts of fraud with a scheme that bilked 15 investors of $12.5 million.

Amit Mathur, 38, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, was also ordered to pay restitution to his victims by the federal District Court in Worcester, the Boston office of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a release.

Holding himself out as a fantastically successful investment adviser operating a firm in Worcester known as Entrust Capital Management, Inc, Mathur received approximately $16 million from investors, it alleged.

According to evidence presented at trial, Mathur told investors - in person and in marketing literature - that Entrust was operating a hedge fund that consistently achieved positive rates of return and did better than the general stock market indices.

In this way, Mathur lulled his investors into a false sense of security to persuade them to invest money and to leave their money with Entrust for the long term, the FBI said.

In fact, during its entire existence, according to the evidence introduced at trial, the Entrust fund suffered consistent losses. Moreover, in several instances, Mathur never even invested the money investors gave him.

Instead, he misappropriated more than $5 million of investors' money for his own personal use, including luxury items such as several cars, gambling, New England Patriots football season tickets, jewellery and clothing, FBI said.

Rare blue diamond auctioned for $8.4 million

Rare blue diamond auctioned for $8.4 million

A rare 7.03-carat blue diamond has sold for more than $8.4 million at an auction in Geneva.

The buyer will be able to name the diamond, auctioneer Sotheby's said.

The gem, which is smaller than a dime and shaped like a cushion, is one of only a few blue diamonds ever found.

Sotheby's said the gem was discovered last year in South Africa and has been graded highly for its vivid colour and clarity.

Marauding Dragons on a Desolate Island

The world's largest lizard (up to 3 meters long) only needs one bite to infect its prey, and then it will stalk it - patiently, cold-bloodedly - until it keels over; and yes, if no living prey is available, it will gladly dig up human graves...

The Komodo dragon is the closest thing to a dinosaur that we have today on Earth, and to the "epic fantasy" wicked dragons. Its teeth are covered in bleeding tissue, its mouth copiously bleeds every time it feeds, drooling venomous saliva and flicking its long yellow forked tongue. Certainly, these ancient critters are dangerous, awesome and unique (get ready for the "Predator vs. Komodo Dragons" movie).

"Komodo dragons have become a noted topic in the press recently after an Indonesian fisherman was mauled and killed while trespassing on Komodo island. Now, what was this fisherman doing on the island in the first place you ask? Searching for lost treasure? Nope. Saving a damsel in distress? Nope… apparently, he went hunting for sugar apples. Yes. Hunting for sugar apples, on an island known for its population of 1,500 Komodo dragons. If you ask me, the media should be handing this guy a Darwin award.

The fact is, Komodo dragons are dangerous and should not be taken lightly. They are active, agile predators with razor sharp teeth and have the ability to climb trees, swim or outrun any human. They can also detect prey 10 kilometers away (are you kidding me?), they live 50 years... and they use pretty evil hunting tricks: "Komodo dragon has also been observed intentionally startling a pregnant deer in the hopes of a miscarriage whose remains they can eat, a technique that has also been observed in large African predators"

All visitors to the national park must be accompanied by a ranger who also serves as your guide through the national park area. A fact, further drilled in by the park management, as they pointed to some dried up blood stains on the window left by a ranger who’d been attacked, a week earlier, by a dragon (he survived). Staying on the path becomes imperative:

Our first encounter with dragons was close to the Park HQ, just next to the kitchen area. Four Komodo dragons, attracted by the scent of food, sat around the area in the hopes of scoring a quick meal. The park officials never feed any of the dragons or they’ll get into the habit of coming back for more.
Fifteen minutes into the trek we see a fully grown adult Komodo dragon walking straight towards us… head swinging, tongue lashing and feet pacing one after the next, this Komodo was on the prowl! We moved off the path and into the grass to let him pass by:

Men still go for looks, women for wealth when choosing partners

Like-mindedness and compatibility are thought to be the common denominators when it comes to choosing a mate, but a new study says that our choice of a prospective partner still depends on the stereotypical laws of the Neanderthal age.

In the study, the Indiana University cognitive scientist Peter Todd and colleagues found that though individuals may claim otherwise, beauty and good looks are the key ingredients for men, while women, the much choosier of the sexes, leverage their looks for wealth, security and commitment.

According to Todd, this formula has served humans throughout time, with the model of choosy females reflected in most mammals.

"Evolutionary theories in psychology suggest that men and women should trade off different traits in each other, and when we look at the actual mate choices people make, this is what we find evidence for. Ancestral individuals who made their mate choices in this way -- women trading off their attractiveness for higher quality men and men looking for any attractive women who will accept them -- would have had an evolutionary advantage in greater numbers of successful offspring," Todd said.

The study used a speed-dating session in Germany to compare what people say they want in a mate with whom they actually choose. Speed dating, an increasingly popular way for singles to meet, involves sessions in which men and women have numerous "mini dates" with up to 30 different people, each date lasting anywhere from three to five minutes.

After every date, the men and women checked a box on a card noting whether they would like to see the other person again. The team also asked 46 adults in a speed-dating session to fill out a questionnaire in advance, assessing themselves and their ideal mate according to evolutionarily relevant traits, such as physical attractiveness, present and future financial status, health and parenting qualities.

Initially, according to Todd, participants stated they wanted to find someone who was like themselves, a socially acceptable answer. But once the sessions began, the men sought the more attractive women and the women were drawn to material wealth and security, setting their standards according to how attractive they viewed themselves. Furthermore, while men on average wanted to see every second woman again, the women wanted to meet only a third of the men again.

The results suggest that modern-day singles, like generations of their ancestors, are driven by biology with men seeking the best specimens to procreate with, and women seeking the best long-term partners.

While the study's results came as no surprise to Todd, the research usefulness of the speed-dating forum did. Todd and his colleagues are conducting several other speed-dating studies that could confirm the results.

"Speed dating lets us look at a large number of mate choice decisions collected in a short amount of time. It only captures the initial stage of the extended process involved in long-term mate choice. But that initial expression of interest is crucial for launching everything else," Todd said.

Late at night, if you constantly see light flickering and reflecting on your teen’s face, don’t panic.

It’s just that they are SMSing their buddies or soul mates! A recent survey reveals that teens lose their sleep at night due to texting friends. They end up grumpy at school the next day. With new schemes that provide a pack of free messages, these teens find communication even more easy through SMSes.

“My daughter, who is in Class X, says it’s much easier to message her friends about certain doubts in a subject than calling them up,” says Padmini Ramanujam, a school teacher. Apart from getting your job done quietly, texting doesn’t cost you much. “I don’t have to shell out money, as I have opted for a booster package, in which SMS is free. I’m actually saving money in the process,” says Neeta, a college student.

However, parents are a bit worried about the trend. “My son keeps messaging till late in the night. He gets up late. I find him exhausted in the mornings,” says a worried Ram Kumar, father of an engineering student. Is it just the health issue that parents are concerned about? Actually no. There is much more to it. “I always see my 16-year-old daughter with her mobile, constantly punching alphabets. She seems far away from the real world. We hardly have any lively conversation at home. She seems more inclined towards the gadget,” sighs Ramya, her mother.

Teens have a different version to tell. “I can’t talk to my girl friend in front of my parents. She also finds it difficult to reciprocate properly. We message each other during breaks,” says Aashish Malhothra, a visual communication student. Nandhini Murthy, a Class XI student says, her mother doesn’t approve of her talking over the phone for long hours with her friends. “I have no other option but to SMS them. At times, when our conversation turns juicy, we end up SMSing till late in the night,” she says.
Dr Raghu, child psychologist says losing sleep can harm children’s health. “If a child does not get enough sleep, he/she might get stressed and lose concentration. This greatly harms their memory power. Moreover, it is best to keep mobile phones away from them. The radiation can cause severe headache and lead to other complications,” he adds.

"What is the most important part of the body?"

My mother used to ask me:

"What is the most important part of the body?"

Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correctanswer. When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us ashumans, so I said, "My ears, Mommy."

Mother said, "No Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon."

Several years had passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated the correct answer. So this time I told her, "Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes."

Mother looked at me and told me, "You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind."

Stumped again, I continued my quest for knowledge. Over the years, Mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was, "No, but you are getting smarter every year, my child."

Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. Even my father cried. I remember that especially because it was only the second time I saw him cry. My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final good-bye to Grandpa.

Mother asked me, "Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?"

I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a gamebetween her and me. Mother saw the confusion on my face and told me,

"This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived in your life. For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you was wrong and I have given you an example why. But today is the day you need to learn this important lesson."

Mother looked down at me as only a mother can. I saw her eyes well up with tears. Mother said, "My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder."

I asked, "Is it because it holds up my head?"

Mother replied,

"No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or a lovedone when they cry. Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometime in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will always have a shoulder to cry on when you need it."

Then and there I knew the most important body part is not a selfish one. It is sympathetic to the pain of others.

People will forget what you said... People will forget what you did.... But people will NEVER forget how you made them feel.

True or not, the story makes you stop and think. Be blessed. Be a blessing. Get your shoulder ready...!!!

India 2nd Fastest Growing Economy !!!

Despite the global economic slowdown, India is the second fastest growing economy in the world and has recorded a sustained growth of over 9 percent for three consecutive years for the first time, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Monday.

Presenting the interim budget in the Lok Sabha, Mukherjee said the gross domestic product (GDP) has increased by 7.5 percent, 9.5 percent, 9.7 percent and 9 percent, respectively, in the four fiscal years between 2004-05 and 2007-08.

'This is a record growth of over 9 percent for three consecutive years for the first time. With per capita income growing at 7.4 percent per annum, this represented the fastest ever improvement in living standards over a four-year period,' he said.

The fiscal deficit has come down from 4.5 percent in 2003-04 to 2.7 percent in 2007-08 and revenue deficit from 3.6 percent to 1.1 percent in 2007-08, Mukherjee added.

The minister said despite the global financial crisis that set in 2007 impacting most emerging market economies, a 7.1 percent growth rate in the current fiscal makes India the world's second fastest growing economy.

The growth drivers for the period were agriculture, services, manufacturing along with trade and construction, he said, adding that the annual growth rate of the agriculture sector rose to 3.7 percent between 2003-04 and 2007-08.

'Foodgrain production recorded an increase of 10 million tonnes each year during this period and touched an all-time high of 230 million tonnes in 2007-08,' Mukherjee stated.

Concerning the manufacturing sector, he said the sector has maintained a growth of 9.5 percent per annum in the same period, while exports saw an annual average growth rate of 26.4 percent in dollar terms.

MTV Roadies: I have seriously had enough of this bald, self obsessed Raghu Ram for six years now. Too add insult to injury his twin bald brother came out from nowhere after five years of the show's existence. Same old therapies and same old vote-out dramas. Somehow the adventure and being on the road part has disappeared over the year. Boo ya guys!

Oye It's Friday: The show has just started and it's already helping chemists sell headache pills. Farhan Akhtar may be the stud of the century, the jack of all trades but he's certainly not in a good spot here. The show is extremely irritating to say the least. The jokes are straight out of the garbage can. The celebrities on the show have also failed to add to the highly anticipated spark.

Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi: Screw Radha ki Betiyaan..! I've had my mom watch TV shows I thought were disgusting but this one is way above all of them. A plot that makes no sense. Too much overacting adds the salt on the wound. The immature performances by the actors on the show makes this the worst show ever.

Dancing Queens: If you thought you've had enough of the blond Rakhi Sawant on the small screen here comes the pain! Dancing Queens is a show that's like multiplying Rakhi Sawant with twenty (10 contestants and 10 mentors) and then the cherry on the cake, Jeetendra and Hema Malini. Truly makes you go WTF?!

Indian Idol: After thousands of reality shows based on drilling out singers from across the country we are left with no one with a voice. I hope Sony realizes this and we don't have a season of Indian Idol ever again. Anu Malik just turned a wannabe in four seasons of Indian Idol. WTF was Sonali Bendre doing as a judge this season? Indian reality shows are supposedly targeted at the brainless.

Girls Banned From School For Beign 'Too Blonde'

A headteacher has come under fire from parents and pupils after banning two 16-year-olds from school for being 'too blonde'. Raegan Booth, 16, and Aby Western, 15, say they were threatened with expulsion by David Alexander unless they dyed their hair brown. The girls claim they are being forced to adhere to the strict dress code of Rednock School in Dursley, Gloucestershire, in order to sit GCSE exams.

But Raegan remains adamant that her hair is a natural shade of blonde. She said:'The school rules clearly state that there are to be no "unnatural" hair colours on students. 'Unnatural hair colours are blue, purple, green and bright red. Blonde is considered a natural hair colour and there are many different shades. "The head claims that he must follow the rules. To me this suggests that certain students are being made to look a way which is against their will.

'I believe this is wrong and no amount of hair dye affects a person's ability in school.'The teenager, who is refusing to dye her hair a darker shade, added: 'As we are in the middle of our GCSE year, we should not be excluded over something so petty.'This is a crucial time for us and we should be focusing solely on our grades as opposed to our level of appearance.'

Martin Booth, Raegan's father said: 'Raegan is a model pupil and is working very hard towards her exams.'She is always well turned out, her hair looks a very natural blonde.'This is their final year, they are under enough pressure with GCSEs, they do not need to be worrying about their hair.'

Mr Alexander, who is due to meet with Raegan, denies the claims. He said that the girls were sent home only to dye their hair, and that they would still have been allowed to sit their GCSE exams. He said: 'We would not stop any student from sitting their GCSEs, it is in our interests that every student sits their GCSEs at the school.

'We are just trying to be consistent and apply the rules across the board. This code of conduct has been in place for a long time.'However I am going to be meeting with parents to talk about looking again at the code and making it more clear.

'I think the problem is how you interpret the rules and we need to make it clearer for the students and parents.

'I accept this is a stressful time for the GCSE students, but we have to be consistent with our rules and must apply it to all year groups, otherwise it would be unfair.'
