This week the library is incredibly grateful to Dennis Blandford for his generous gift of an early edition of Virgil’s extant works:

The book was printed in Basel in 1613 and has been rebound probably in the early 19th century. Mr. Blandford purchased it in Bristol during the Blitz and it has miraculously remained in excellent condition.

Although the text does feature some annotation we would like to remind readers that it remains unacceptable in the library

This is the library’s earliest edition of Virgil so far, and we cannot extend our thanks enough!

Postage Price Increase

Unfortunately Royal Mail have increased their prices again and also changed the format of parcels; they now come in two sizes: small and medium. Anything more than one book is likely to be medium. The new system and prices can be seen here on the second page entitled 'Franking Prices'. If you wish to be more economical then simply let us know that you'd prefer second class when you request your books.

Scanning Available

While we continue our quest for a new photocopier/scanner we are offering a modest scanning service in the library for readers. High definition colour scans are now available at a cost of 50 pence per page either to be sent via email or transferred onto a portable storage device. This service is not being offered as an alternative to photocopying but rather for readers who need colour images for essays, presentations etc. Please ask at the desk for further details.

More Discoveries at Antikythera

Recent discoveries suggest that the wreck at Antikythera, where the mysterious Antikythera mechanism (above) was discovered, is much larger than previously thought- perhaps even being home to two ancient vessels. Scanning the future...

Staff of our library and the IHR are currently embarking on a quest to replace the old photocopiers with new machines that do both colour copying and also scanning. We’ll keep you updated of any developments but fingers crossed that scanning will be available in the next year!

Opening hours during the Olympics and beyond

We will be open as usual during the Olympics.

That is:

Monday-Friday: 9:30am-6pm
Saturday: 10am-4:30pm

At 6pm on Friday, August 17th we will close for our annual summer break. The library will re-open at 9:30am on Monday, September 3rd. Evening openings will re-commence with the start of term. All loans taken out between now and August 17th will be due back on September 3rd.

We will also soon be welcoming a new graduate library trainee, so if you see a new face behind the library desk in the next few weeks, do say hello!
