Accessing the Library during the Olympic Games

The Olympic website Get Ahead of the Games gives advice about the impact that the games will have on travel in London. So far, they have this to say about Bloomsbury:

There will be 22,000 accredited journalists and media from all over the world in London and many will be based in Bloomsbury throughout the Olympic Games. The Media Transport Hub will be operated by London 2012 as the pickup and drop-off point for transport that takes accredited journalists and media to and from Games venues. The Media Transport Hub will be in Russell Square and is expected to serve up to 5,000 people a day. Due to their different broadcast times and deadlines, journalists will need access to their accommodation, the Olympic Park and other venues 24 hours-a-day.

Some access restrictions will apply in the area during July and until the end of August. An access permit scheme for local residents and businesses is being developed for Russell Square (west and north), Montague Street, Montague Place, Malet Street, Bedford Place, Keppel Street and Cardington Street. The latest details of this, plus contact details for the London 2012 team, are available on the London 2012 website.

The area will be busy from 13 July with shuttle buses providing a pre-Games service for media preparing for the Games. The Media Transport Hub will be fully operational from Wednesday 25 July to Wednesday 15 August. The busiest times are likely to be 6-10am and 6-10pm each day. After the end of the Olympic Games, the temporary transport facilities and signs will be removed by the end of August.

Essential upgrades to the online catalogue

The university's online library catalogues will be off-line for an estimated two hours from 15:00 on Sunday, January 15th as some essential upgrades to the system are made.

As our catalogue is hosted by the university, while this upgrade is taking place you will be unable to search the catalogue or access e-resources.

New acting director for the Institute of Classical Studies

Professor Mike Edwards has now taken up the Chair of Classics at Trinity St David’s, University of Wales, and has therefore given up the post of Director of the Institute of Classical Studies in London, after more than five years of distinguished service. Professor John North has agreed to take on the post of Acting Director for the calendar year 2012. Essential maintenance on Saturday, January 7th

On Saturday, January 7th, heating engineers will be coming to do some work in the archaeology room of the library. This will necessitate the removal of all of the desks in this room, and may lead to some disruption. The desks will be replaced on Monday morning.

Library hours over the Christmas period

The Library will close at 5:30pm on Friday 23rd December 2011 and reopen on Tuesday 3rd January 2012.

The last Saturday opening will be on the 17th of December 2011. Saturday openings will recommence on January 7th 2012.

Evening opening (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 8pm) will end on December 15th 2011 and will re-start on Tuesday 10th January 2012.

We're back!

After a long hiatus, the Library has returned to the world of blogging! What have you missed?

The Library now shares the third floor (and the circulation desk) with the Institute of Historical Research Library, who have temporarily relocated here while their premises in the North Block are being refurbished. Their collection and staff are housed in what was previously the Senate House periodicals section, next door to us.
The common room is now being used as a space for Senate House meetings and conferences. However, two new common rooms are available on either side of the ground floor of Senate House, conveniently next door to the café.
Late Antique and Byzantine periodicals have been moved to their own dedicated section, adjacent to the books on these topics.
The heating in the archaeology room is currently being improved.
Our previous graduate trainee, Alice Milner, has finished her year at the library and is now pursuing a career in publishing with Penguin. A new trainee, Hannah Dingwall, who studied Literae Humaniores at the University of Oxford, started in August. We have also gained a new shelving assistant, Geri van Essen, last year's graduate trainee at the Institute of Historical Research, who is working with us while studying for an MA in the History of the Book with the Institute of English Studies at the University of London.
The Library has a new furry friend...a mouse displaced by the renovation of the lifts! We've since repatriated him into the wild.

We named him "Minimus".

And, of course, we have lots of new material, including new exchanges of Michmanim, Archeologia in Liguria, Studi Ellenistici, Japan Studies in Classical Antiquity, Archaiologiko Ergo Kretes, and Histria Antiqua. Sad news

We are sorry to announce the death in early January 2010 of Fred Jenkins, a very long serving member of the Joint Library of the Hellenic and Roman Societies who started work in 1936, ending his career as Sub-Librarian when he retired in 1977. Fred will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.

Fetching service as interim measure

Restricted re-opening of the Library on 21st September due to on-going repair work

The Move – Updated 17th September 2009.

The Librarian regrets that, due to urgent repair work on the periodicals rolling stacks in the main part of the library, it has become necessary to close off this whole area for safety reasons. Access will therefore not be possible to readers or library staff until further notice for any items in the following sections:-

Archaeology / topography (102-116); Ancient History / Religion & Mythology / Philosophy / Science & Technology (117-127) Ancient art and numismatics (128-136); Ancient society and civilisation (152-153); Periodicals (Stacks 1-20), including current issues.

In addition, it will not be possible to access the Computer Room or the Photocopier Room.

However, access will be possible (with limited seating) to the following areas:-

Christian Fathers, (75-76); Language & Literature (80-99); Dictionaries and some reference works (60-70; 140-149); Papyrology and Epigraphy (100-101); Modern Greece, (151); General congresses (200); Collected works and Festschriften, (201-202); Classical Tradition and miscellaneous Classical Studies (203-206).

Once again, the Librarian is very sorry for the inconvenience that this will cause; it is hoped that a full service will be operational by Monday 28th September, but please keep watching this space for further announcements.

Update on the move

The book copier has been successfully re-located in the 3rd floor library. We have finished the arrangement of the main book areas and the shelving is at a more accessible height. There are new carpet tiles throughout the library. We have now had some more shelving erected and this will be filled early next week. The tables for readers are ready to be re-assembled. The display of new books will be at a central point in the library.

We are making steady progress on re-arranging the collection and have completed the sections on papyrology and epigraphy, archaeology and history / administration / philosophy and science and technology. Two members of staff are currently working on Literature and work has begun on the ancient life section. We have created a new numismatics area which includes the specialist journals for that subject. The book copier is expected to be re-located by a specialist firm on 10th September.

The Move: Further progress

The five library staff are all working on the new arrangement of books and journals in the refurbished 3rd floor Library. The new library counter / reception area will be directly opposite the lifts in the South Block. The entrance to the library will be to the left side of the counter, down the corridor which used to house two seminar rooms. These rooms, and the corridor, will contain the large literature section. Following on from this we are creating an area for papyrology and epigraphy, and related journals. The library continues around to the left and the large room is now the area for archaeology, art and architecture volumes. We hope to have shelves erected in the staff work areas, when we will be able to unpack.

Move back to South Block: Progress so far.

At last the library collection has been moved over from the North to the South Block and the library staff have been working hard to re-arrange the collection in the newly refurbished library area. This includes two converted seminar rooms with additional compact shelving and two converted library staff areas since the basement area (previously the lower reading room) is no longer available.

Staffing: Welcome and goodbye

Sophia Fisher has opted for early retirement and her last day was 31st July 2009. We thank her for her many years of service and wish her well. We welcome two new staff: Christopher Ashill, (who started in June) - his last post was at the Royal Horticultural Library but prior to that he was working in The Senate House Library (part of University of London Research Library Services), so he is back on familiar territory. Today, 3rd August, marks the starting date of our New Trainee, Louise Flynn, from King's College London who will replace Katie Rose who begins an MA in Library and Information Studies in University College London in September.

Move back to South Block

At its meeting on 23 June, the Senate House Project Board reluctantly took the decision to delay the start of the moves back into the South Block of Senate House. This is because the extensive programme of works to refurbish the building have not yet been fully completed. The moves, which had been scheduled for July 2009, are now expected to begin on 19th August.
The situation is regrettable and the Board is aware of the disruption and frustration it will cause staff, students and colleagues from other universities. However, after a thorough investigation of all the available options, it was decided that a delay in the moves was the best course of action.
The Library will therefore now remain OPEN until 6.00 pm on Friday 14th August, but it will probably be closed until Monday 21st September. Please keep watching this space for further announcements or consult the webpage http://icls.sas.ac.uk/library/Current.htm
