One of the greatest gifts I got from being part of AJC Coaching School this year was getting to know and being inspired by the brilliant leadership coach Jamie Damsker . Jamie has a rare clarity, and a powerful creative way with language.

One of the biggest things I took from our conversations was a renewed aliveness around what he calls the Michelangelo distinction.

Supposedly, when Michelangelo was asked how he created the statue of David, he said: “The David was already there. All I did was remove the marble that wasn’t David.” To me, this describes the heart of what great coaching and great leadership actually is.

Several years ago, I saw something: we are all David.

We are already the thing we are trying so hard to become.

But most of us don’t know it – not because we are incapable, but because we’ve become so used to the stone around us that we mistake it for who we are. Stress, pressure, insecurity, self-doubt, overthinking, perfectionism, old stories – after a while it all feels normal. And instead of seeing the beauty inside, we look at ourselves and see an ugly block of stone that needs fixing.

That’s also why the world is so addicted to an additive approach. Add tools. Add strategies. Add habits. Add discipline. Add another system.

Some of it is useful, but much of it is an attempt to compensate for something that was never broken in the first place. The real transformation is not additive. It’s subtractive. It’s removing what isn’t you. It’s seeing through the noise that covers what’s already there.

When I coach from this place, my job becomes very simple. I don’t need to fix my clients. I don’t need to install confidence or clarity like a software update. I simply need to stand in the knowing that their brilliance is already there – and help them remove what is in the way. And the moment you start seeing people as David, leadership changes. Business changes. The world becomes full of possibility again.

So if there’s one thing I want to encourage you with today, it’s this:

Look for the David within you!

And ask yourself where you’re still holding onto the stone around your core brilliance that isn’t really you.

The David is not something you need to create.

It’s something you get to uncover.

The most effective leaders today are not just decision-makers.
They are coaches in how they listen, how they relate, and how they see people.

When we talk about enrollment in leadership, we are not talking about persuasion, pressure, or motivational speeches. Enrollment is the ability to touch something deeper in people – to move them into a higher possibility where new thinking, new energy, and new pathways become available.

This is where leadership and coaching meet.

A leader who leads like a coach understands that people do not need to be fixed or pushed. They need space to see themselves more clearly. Enrollment happens when leaders listen without judgment, without rushing to solutions, and without an agenda to look good or be right.

This quality of listening creates what could be called a third space – a space beyond roles, hierarchies, and opinions. In that space, people often hear their own wisdom more clearly. Confidence grows. Insecure thinking loosens its grip.

Great leader-coaches trust this process.

They listen not only to words, but to what is underneath. They trust their intuition about when to challenge, when to slow down, and when to say very little. They are not trying to manage emotions or control outcomes. They are present, involved, and grounded.

From this presence, leaders naturally start seeing the highest possible version of the people in front of them – often before those people can see it themselves. This is not naïve optimism. It is a deep confidence in human potential.

When people feel seen this way, something shifts.
They stop defending.
They stop proving.
They become more willing to take responsibility.

Enrollment also requires that leaders are enrolled themselves. If you are half-committed, doubtful, or constantly managing your own insecurity, people will feel it. But when you are clear about what you stand for and connected to a bigger possibility, others are drawn into that clarity.

This is why enrollment cannot be turned on like a tool. It is not a technique used in meetings or performance talks. It is a way of being. It shows up in everyday conversations, in moments of uncertainty, in how leaders respond when things do not go as planned.

Leadership that includes coaching qualities creates alignment without force, ambition without fear, and performance without constant pressure.

Enrollment is not about getting people to follow you.
It is about helping them remember what they are capable of – and inviting them to step into it.

(inspired by Stephen McGhee, Mastering the Art of Enrollment)

Yesterday, I had the honor of speaking at Enpal ‘s Berlin office, invited by the inspiring Project Ada network, to share what I’ve learned about one of the most misunderstood topics in modern business: THRIVING

Since 2020, my work has been shaped by a radically different understanding of how the mind works, and where true resilience and well-being come from. This shift changed my life, and ever since, I’ve dedicated my career to helping others discover the same.

What I shared with the audience at ENPAL was simple but powerful:

We are designed to thrive.

There’s a source of creativity, clarity, energy, and compassion within us—always available.
But most of us are innocently misusing the power of thought.

We mistake insecure thinking for truth.

We live in a moment-by-moment illusion that doesn’t look like an illusion.

The good news? The moment we see that thought creates our experience, we wake up to the present. And the present moment is the only place where real solutions, resilience, and thriving live. Independent of circumstances.

Judging by the questions and reflections afterward, I know that something landed for some of the participants – and that’s the greatest compliment I can receive.

Thank you again Barbara Franzreb for the invitation, Hanna Lilian Nowotzin and to the entire Ada team for the warm welcome, the seamless setup, and the vibrant energy in the room. I’m already looking forward to the next time.

And if you were in the room, what was your biggest takeaway?

14 months ago I was barely exercising. My back wasn’t great, my neck often stiff and I didn’t have much strength. I knew intellectually this needed to change but had a lot of seemingly valid reasons why it wasn’t that bad and also why it wasn’t possible for me.

In a few days millions of people will set new year’s resolutions, including getting healthier, leaner, fitter. They will enroll at the gym or plan workouts and runs. Only a tiny percentage will succeed and achieve their goals.

Why?

Because change addressed at the level of DOING (strategies, behaviors) usually doesn’t work if it is not supported by a new way of BEING (thinking, feeling, understanding).

First, my excuses had to fall away before I could start working out 5-6 times per week, which I have done consistently over 14 months.

I had to start seeing myself as an athlete, a role model for my kids, a better husband, a strong man of my word before the strategies could work sustainably.

I had to deeply see that feeling motivated is irrelevant (!) to working out.

So whatever your new year’s resolutions are, I encourage you to start at the level of BEING.

Who do you need to BE to achieve your vision and goals in 2025?

Merry Christmas!

With integrity as your binary ambition, it becomes clear what to do:
– Commit to what you believe is doable
– Be your word
– Communicate early and clean it up when you fall short.

Without integrity, people overcommit and every aspect of work becomes a constant juggle of priorities and draining decisions to take.

So have fun twiddling your thumbs until the organiser starts the meeting (IF they show up, which is also not guaranteed by a lot of people).

Bild Quelle: ZDF / Forschungsgruppe Wahlen

The car flipped several times, and I walked out without a scratch.

That crash taught me something I still carry with me today: 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐲, and 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐲. I try to remind myself daily (and I forget often and get caught up in life).

I had taken a wrong turn on the way to a concert. When I realized it, I was late and felt under pressure. In that state, I pushed too hard, made a driving mistake—and the car flipped several times. Miraculously, it hit neither tree nor other cars, and I was lucky to survive.

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐲. Sometimes in a single instant. More commonly slowly, from the inside out. Our bodies are not designed to run on adrenaline all the time. Yet we so often misuse our minds as if every situation were life-or-death.

That’s why my “third birthday” matters so much to me. Discovering how the mind really works and who we really are at the core gave me a baseline level of happiness, lightness, and gratitude than I couldn’t imagine—while also enhancing my courage, confidence and performance like never before.

So here’s my birthday wish:

Take one conscious breath.
Feel the aliveness in you.
Drop your tension, focus on gratitude.
Spread love to someone today.

“What’s wrong is always available, and so is what’s right.” (Tony Robbins)

Have blessed day!

I was lying by the pool on vacation when my 10-year-old son came over. He wanted a specific song to be played at the pool bar. “Can you ask them for me?” he said.

My first reaction: I don’t want to bother the staff. A small hesitation. A small limiting belief.

Then I realized: this is a great moment to teach him something. So instead of asking for him, I gave him one simple English sentence so he could ask himself. Excitedly, he ran over (how cool is it that kids always run because they are so enthusiastic!) and asked.

One minute later… his song was playing. (Seven Nation Army, in case you’re wondering.)

And it hit me: the song says “a seven nation army couldn’t hold me back.”

But often something much stronger holds us back — our own mind.

Our mind creates:- stories about why we can’t have something- resistance to our own desires- fear of rejection.

So we hedge our bets. We play small. But rejection is not a fact. It’s a thought. An interpretation. That doesn’t mean anything.

What’s real is the action we take — the courage to ask.

Whether the answer is yes or no, what matters is that we tried.

That we didn’t stay small. That we didn’t dilute our dreams.

A simple lesson from a child at a pool bar:

Dare to ask. Dare to create. And remember: not succeeding doesn’t mean anything about you.

I finished the first draft of my new book.

Working Title: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟎𝐗 𝐂𝐄𝐎

Writing this book has forced me to bring all the key elements of my coaching together in one central framework – a very useful exercise.

It became clear to me that the core idea of the book is to practically bridge two elements for CEOs, entrepreneurs, founders, that are usually treated as polar opposites:

High performance & scaling “VS” peace of mind & low stress

But it’s not really a ‘versus’ or a paradox -> These two elements go together and support each other!

The book is for high performing business leaders, who want to scale fast and stay sane — who want peace of mind, not just performance, who want exponential success and enjoy the ride.

The inner game, mastering one’s mind is the key to do that. While almost everyone is looking for leverage on the outside, the greatest leverage is on the inside.

I am in the process of editing the book now, which I see as The ‘Atomic Habits’ for CEOs. Official release will be in the next few months. Let me know if you are interested in learning more and getting updates on early chapters, release date, etc.

“I’m organizing XYZ, will you come?” – “No, I won’t.”

I was recently invited to join a ‘cool’ activity on a Sunday. Sunday is family time, so I would only step away for very special occasions.

My natural inclination was to answer “Unfortunately, I can’t.”, or “Sorry, that doesn’t fit.” With this answer I would create myself as a victim. I would be too afraid to stand up for my wants, and invent an excuse of external circumstances that prevent me from attending. Gladly, I noticed this script.

In the pursuit of more integrity in my life, and not making myself a victim, I forced myself to answer simply, and truthfully: “No, I won’t.”

The answer didn’t come super easy but felt powerful. In a small situation I had created myself as the full owner of my life and my decisions.

Language is powerful. Speaking “I must”, “I cannot” and “I have to” is not just a social slip of the tongue. It’s an energetic expression of powerlessness. It creates me as powerless.

That’s the path I want to stay on and master, and help my clients master: being a powerful owner and creator in their own lives.

So here is my invitation: Where do you shy away from truthfully expressing your wants and creating yourself as a victim? And how can you clean that up?

Have a great weekend!
Johannes

Two days ago, I drove into Switzerland. After 30 minutes I got an SMS: “You have used roaming data worth €49, please let us know if you would like to continue using roaming data.”

The old me from a few years ago would have done one thing:

I would have judged myself for being so stupid not to have done my research and wasted money.

In my childhood I developed a script that I always needed to be smart and optimise everything. Any evidence to the contrary would prove that I am stupid. So I have spent an exaggerated amount of time in my life researching, analysing, optimising decisions. And when I failed to optimise I would judge myself heavily.

Self-judgement is a very corrosive energy. It’s often subtle, it feels justified, and it drains the life out of the “self judge”.

Sometimes, when I work with clients, what surfaces are dozens, sometimes hundreds of self-judgements. They are the hidden unconscious scripts that run their lives and create their realities and possibilities.

I’m glad to have done so much work with my brilliant coach Ankush Jain on forgiving myself judgements and create a new conscious operating system to live by. So I can use 49 wasted Euros as a small lesson, nothing else.

What about you? Can you identify a script that runs your life and creates self judgement when you fail?

Awareness is the first step to make a different choice and step into a new possibility…

PS: I got to see the famous bears of Bern for free, so I’m considering the €49 Euros my visa fee to experience the wonders of Switzerland.

Every cell listens to every thought that you give life to.

But stress is not a given, and understanding the mind and the REAL source of stress can almost eliminate it.

2. I’m grateful to be (alive)

Unfortunately, I forget this too often. It takes Christmas and a cleanup to find old pictures to remind me that I could be dead.

We all could be dead, and we don’t even know it. One misstep that you avoided, leaving the house one minute earlier, could have killed you. You wont even find out. There is always reason to be grateful.

Have a great, grateful and stress free start into 2025!
