- Dough Helps the Bread Rise - remember, Jesus doesn't want your money; He wants your heart.

- We are freaking out because we've taken our eyes off of Jesus and we're putting them on the economy.

- Does the economy have a hold on you? Because God has a hold on the economy!

- There's only one place in the entire Bible where God comes right out and boldly says, "Test Me." Do you have the guts & faith to test God?

- Lots of Colwood folks are committing to The Tithing Challenge over the next 90 days. Imagine what the people of God could do for the Kingdom of God if we all put on our big-boy pants and exercised faith & trust with our finances!

- Baptismapalooza is this coming weekend - 2 services only (9:45 & 11:15am). Can't wait to hear the stories of life-change. I'm coming to both services!

- 40+ are going public via baptism!

- Before, in-between, and after services, I hear there's going to be some sanctified tailgating outside. Love it.

- Our culture gets excited & tailgates before sports events. Shouldn't we have even greater enthusiasm and contagious excitement about what Jesus is doing in our lives?

- For what its worth, we filmed a short digital-video showing that our tithes pay for every little ministry tool in God's house... including coffee! Lack of coffee sent me on this journey mid-message:

We look back upon history, and what do we see? Empires
rising and falling, revolutions and counterrevolutions, wealth
accumulated and wealth disbursed. Shakespeare has written of the rise
and fall of great ones, that ebb and flow with the moon.

I look back upon my own fellow countrymen (Great Britain), once upon
a time dominating a quarter of the world, most of them convinced, in
the words of what is still a popular song, that ‘the God who made them
mighty, shall make them mightier yet.’

I’ve heard a crazed, cracked Austrian (Hitler) announce to the world
the establishment of a Reich that would last a thousand years. I have
seen an Italian clown (Mussolini) say he was going to stop and restart
the calendar with his own ascension to power. I’ve heard a murderous
Georgian brigand in the Kremlin (Stalin), acclaimed by the intellectual
elite of the world as being wiser than Solomon, more humane than Marcus
Aurelius, more enlightened than Ashoka.

I have seen America wealthier and, in terms of military weaponry,
more powerful than the rest of the world put together – so that had the
American people so desired, they could have outdone a Caesar, or an
Alexander in the range and scale of their conquests.

All in one lifetime, all in one lifetime, all gone. Gone with the wind.

England, now part of a tiny island off the coast of
Europe, threatened with dismemberment and even bankruptcy. Hitler and
Mussolini dead, remembered only in infamy. Stalin a forbidden name in
the regime he helped found and dominate for some three decades. America
haunted by fears of running out of those precious fluids that keeps
their motorways roaring, and the smog settling, with troubled memories
of a disastrous campaign in Vietnam, and the victories of the Don
Quixotes of the media as they charged the windmills of Watergate.

All in one lifetime, all in one lifetime, all gone. Gone with the wind.

Behind the debris of these solemn supermen, and
self-styled imperial diplomatists, there stands the gigantic figure of
one, because of whom, by whom, in whom and through whom alone, mankind
may still have peace: the person of Jesus Christ.

I present him as the way, the truth, and the life.

- Malcolm Muggeridge (1903-1990) via Tullian Tchividjian

Last week I shared some Tips for Church Job Seekers During the Great Recession. For what its worth, let me turn the tables and now share some ideas for churches:

- Be Specific. Create an ad that clearly filters out unwanted resumes (because you are about to have your inbox flooded in this economy!). Be unapologetically specific. For example, if you want a lead pastor who understands 2009 technology, ask in the ad, "Are you addicted to your iPhone?" Trust me, that will weed out resumes quickly.

- Cast a Wide Net. Don't just think outside the box in writing/listing your ad. Ask yourself, "There's a box?" Cast crystal clear vision within your ad. God's Spirit will use your descriptive words to grab the right man's heart.

- Say No Quickly. Don't string guys along. Within 24 hours of receiving their resume, reply back with a clear next step (i.e. "We will contact you by xx date"). Filter through resumes quickly or the backlog will paralyze you.

- Say Yes Quickly. Don't get me wrong, follow your search team's process. But don't drag it out for 6 months either. The longer you wait, the more people/giving/momentum your church is hemorrhaging without their lead pastor. Examine your candidate, but jump through the hoops with speed, not lethargy.

- Keep Solo On-Site Visits Short or Bring the Whole Family.

- Seek Consensus, Not Unanimity. Within your search team, don't allow a small voice to become a big voice. Consensus is your goal, not a unanimous vote.

In an effort to organize my post-Sunday thoughts and share weekend "wins" with our larger church community, here's the very first ever Monday Reflex!

Great turn-out for our new series, WonderBread: 530 in attendance!

8 people turned toward Christ - wow!

Can't believe tomorrow marks one month that I've been at Colwood Church. Time flies!

In one month, we've seen 44 lives transformed by the Gospel. Breathtaking.

The KidStuf environment came within a few seats of maximum capacity! Once we hit the cap, we're going to work like it depends on us and pray like it depends on God to reach even more families for Christ!

I loved seeing teenagers serving seasoned citizens communion during the 1st service. Beautiful moment.

To curb swine flu fears, we tried a new experiment yesterday with the Lord's Supper - pre-packaged communion wafer-cups. After seeing it at Catalyst Conference, we gave it a try. The experiment worked!

Our lead worshiper, Mike Whipple, is raising up fresh new talents musically in the 3rd service. Love seeing students engaging and serving within the local church.

Next Sunday we're unpacking what baptism is and is not. If you've ever wondered (or know someone who has), don't miss this coming Sunday!

In 2 weeks we're going to give one of the toughest challenges in the message that I've ever been a part of. WonderBread is shaping up to be a tremendous teaching series.
