automatic recurring facebook status updates and tweets using google calendar

this one is excellent. i will tell you how to make automatic tweets and facebook status updates using google calendar.

what you need:

ok; so….

there are two methods here; each with two parts.

one isnt very good, it basically sends the google calendar reminder email to ping.fm. im not sure if you will need it, but ill scope it out just incase you do. the other method takes the google calendar rss feed and emails that to ping.fm

First step for method 1) get google calendar to send reminder emails…

open google calendar
make a new calendar. i called mine ‘tweets’
make it public if you want..
goto settings for that calendar.
goto ‘notifications’
make it read ‘by default remind me via email 1 minutes before each event’
goto ‘share this calendar’
in the email address field, type in the email address you get by going to ping.fm/email
make sure you dont let gmail send that email address an invite..
goto ‘second step’

first step for method 2) get the rss feed from google calendar

open google calendar
make a new calendar. i called mine ‘tweets’
make it public if you want..
goto settings for that calendar.
grab the xml feed for your new calendar

now; you have to choose between sending the feed to ping.fm, in which case you can get all your social networks updated at the same time, or using something like twitterfeed to send it to ping.fm [which is broken just now] or just sending it from twitterfeed directly to twitter.

if you want to add it to ping.fm then they have an rss feed part – ping.fm/feeds
if you want to add it to twitterfeed then go to twitterfeed.com and setup an account there and add the feed.

I used twitterfeed – it has a lot more options and is a lot more customisable; its not as good as i wanted, but at least i have put you on the right path..

Second Step for both methods..

now; go ahead and make calendar events in your new tweets calendar. they will appear in the social networks that you have enabled in ping.fm. it works for recurring events too. so i can now have a tweet that goes out every tuesday saying ‘buy my stuff’ or whatever.

if you want to set auto tweets from your iphone; make sure you go to

m.google.com/sync

in your phones browser and check your new calendar so that you can add events..

im sitting right now participating in a video shoot for a local band called rose parade. when i say participating i really mean watching. and singing ‘da da da da’ when needed it has made me realise that there is a decent community in ayr. its not all musicians; everyone here is a musician in their own right, but we arent all here in that capacity. Campbell is here in the capacity of ‘camera guy’ jamie is here in the capacity that only he can provide; he is also the journalist for his new column in the local paper. rose parade are here to provide the tunes. the rest of us are to proved the massed chorus chants.

i hope that this community continues to grow because it has came from nothing. it has a long way to go; but it will get there.

using ichat for msn, twitter, irc, icq etc

ichat can use jabber (xmpp). xmpp can use ‘transports’ to let you connect to other networks, like MSN, icq, irc, twitter, etc.

this tutorial will show you how to get all your chat services in ichat.

download PSI from here (you need it to setup your xmpp transports)
install it and open it up. it will ask if you want to login, just cancel that
goto General -> account setup
hit ‘add’
in the name field, add a name (a username that you want to register)
hit ‘register new account’
in ‘server’ put jabber.hot-chilli.net
hit save – it will open a box for you to put in a username and password
hit save – it fill out some details for you.
take a note of the username it gives you
right click the account in the main psi window, and go to status-> online.
it will ask you for some details, fill in what you like and hit save.
goto preferences -> events and tick ‘auto auth contacts’ [if you dont it will hurt later on]
right click on the account again and go to service discovery.
goto msn service, add your auth details.
psi will open a window telling you that the msn transport wants to modify your list [the users you see] auth it by clicking the auth button.
you should now see all your msn contacts.
repeat this for all the services you want.
twitter is a good one too – you have to auth the app to twitter, but then all the tweets appear in your chat list =)

You now have all your chat services setup on the xmpp gateway.

now to get all this into ichat.

open ichat
goto preferences -> accounts
hit the + button in the bottom left
account type: jabber
account name: the name you took a note of earlier [username@jabber.hot-chilli.net]
password: your password

you should now not get a flurry of ‘someone wants to add you as a buddy’ which would be painful. if you get them then its cos you didnt tick the ‘auto auth contacts’ earlier on.

facebook is good. except that its not. its good that most of the people you know use it. its not good how they implement things to communicate with those people.

this one is pretty easy.

open ichat
goto preferences
goto accounts
hit the + in the bottom left
account type: Jabber
account name: username@chat.facebook.com
open server options
server: chat.facebook.com
port: 5222

done. log in and talk to your facebook buddies

day 14: siesta

we had muchos cervesa and muchos mojito last night; got back here at 5 am slept all day. i got a bottle of soberano, a bottle of jim beam and a botyle of ponche cabalero. tomorrow we get picked up at 1pm; i will spend my last 50 euro on cigarettes

day 12: bompas to port bou

we cycled for about 40km, then jumped on a quick train for 4 stops from a random wee french place to the first stop inside espania. right into a thunder storm. we had to book into a hostel. there are 5 bars here. one place that sells pizza and 20 carryout shops. the drink and cigarettes here are half the price of france. this place is full of frenchies buying stuff i got 6 cans of san miguel and a bottle of ponche caballero for 13 euro. in france it was about 6 euro for the cans and 20 for the ponche!! we have breakfast included in the price for our hostel, served from 8:30 till 10. then its a 40k cycle to rosas, where we should be now if it wasnt for the rain! we will get 2 nights in rosas

day 11: narbonne to perpignan

day 11: cycled back over the mountain this morning; headwind all the way. about 15km. train from narbonne to perpignan cos we slept about all day. then 15km to find a campsite. all in all a poor day cycling. still, only 60km till spain and 20km after that to rosas. we should be able to do it in one go, but at this rate it will take us 2 days. we are in a campsite just now sleeping a-la-cart. about to make chili con carne from a tin with salsa dip in it, rice and 3 litres of rose wine that cost 5 euro

day 10: sleeping in narbonne

at the end of day 9 we met some frenchies who had moonshine. knowles got hammered. for day 10 we slept all day. and topped up our sun tans we saw a lizard and tried to catch it. we made turkey fillets with rice and mayo and veg and desperado and reggae reggae for dinner. tomorrow we are getting the train to perpignan; then cycling down the coast road to spain (only 80k)

day 9: effing frenchies.

the clicky at montpellier station tried to bump us 20 euro. i got tickets from him and he didnt give me any change. so i said ‘i just gave you a 50′ you need to give me 20 euros change. he frenched at me. i repeated what i said, only louder and more scottish. i also growled. he surrendered. and started to count his money. that took him ten minutes. and he gave me my change right as our train was pulling away from the station. we jumped on the train that was 5 mins later (even though our ticket has a different time on it) we havent been clickied yet, touch wood. lets see what narbonne brings…

well; we got to narbonne. got a map of the route thats left down to roses. we got to the campsite next to the beach again. we also got a spot next to two french girls who liked the ‘what goes on tour, stays on tour’ in french that i learned. ill wait till later to ask to see their white bits . pasta again for dinner. another bottle of red for €2.75.
