I've recently been patted down entering a football stadium, a concert venue, etc. It didn't bother me. I'm not saying it makes me safe, but I believe that's what it is intended to do...and it doesn't bother me. Yes, being subjected without your knowledge to warrantless wiretaps is different from voluntarily submitting to a scan or pat-down. Neither the wiretaps nor the scans/gropes gets me all the hot under the collar, but I don't think they are equivalent in terms of the potential for harm/abuse.

Getting back to the physician example, (assuming they both behave professionally) I feel no different about a doctor seeing/touching my child than a TSA agent.

These are all good points, and I do understand the argument for ignoring these hate-mongers instead of giving them any attention. However - while I don't expect that there is any hope of changing the minds of neo-Nazis and Klan members, etc. at a rally, I DO believe that a presence of dissenters is important. Consider the random white teenager walking around downtown Midland that day. I hope that this teenager sees that there are 10 racists and 100 protesters, and not the other way around. I have great respect for freedom of speech, and consequently believe that it is incumbent upon citizens to speak out AGAINST groups like this while they exercise their right to attempt to spread hatred. I'll be at the rally to stand and shout against them, but without engaging in any violence.

Even though I don't have letters after my name, I will comment and risk having my comment dismissed. I don't think we can comprehend the heart and mind of God. Good questions to ask when you see Him face to face. When I read through the OT what struck me most was that we as humans just don't get it. Didn't then and don't now. We repeat the same mistakes over and over and over. I think the passages you mentioned deal with God keeping His people - namely the Israelites and the lineage of Christ - alive. They are His chosen people. God was very present in the OT. He was right there in battle. Told them exactly what was going to happen and it did. They still didn't believe or live according to His rules. He defeated their enemies, yet they still turned away. It is hard to read that God destroyed people like He did in the OT. Those people turned away from Him and were going to destroy His chosen. The wages of sin is death.

Many of today's Churches teach that God is love. Nothing but love. He's going to give you everything you want if you just ask. Yes, He is love and can give you many riches, but He is also a jealous and judgmental God as shown throughout the OT. We forget that.

I think the OT teaches and reminds us that there is no way we can do what God commands us. It is not in our human nature. That is why He sent Christ to be the sin for us. He does it all - we do nothing. For me that is the focus of being a believer. I can't know the answer to every question the Bible brings up. I do know that Jesus paid the sacrifice for me and all believers to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Good enough for me, but then I don't have a lot of letters after my name. My humble opinion.
