Soon the component Kuneri Mobile Joomla will be released. The component is essentially better than all my previous plugins. I strongly recommend you to update your websites to use of Mobile Joomla.

As it is easy to notice, I for a long time didn’t write to this blog. The first reason is that last and this years I worked hard on my PhD thesis. Other reason is that after last patching of Wordpress (to struggle against spamers) I cannot respond to your comments :-(. I’m going to move the blog to Joomla+JComments, but it will be, most likely, in next year.

Joomla! 1.0.15 addresses a security issue discovered since our last stable release, Joomla! 1.0.14. After adequate testing on a backup or sandbox version of your live site, you should backup your live site and upgrade to 1.0.15.

Note, that you should upgrade your site to Joomla!1.0.15 only if you used Joomla! 1.0.12 or early and subsequently upgrading to next releases (1.0.13 or 1.0.14).

Security Fixes

SECURITY [HIGH] Fixed remote file inclusion vulnerability.

Explanation
In Joomla! 1.0.13, the following line was added to the configuration.php file:
if(!defined('RG_EMULATION')) { define( 'RG_EMULATION', 0 ); }
This file is located in the root directory of your Joomla! Web site. Including this extra line protects against possible remote file inclusion.

We had not enough time to study Joomla!1.5 as Joomla!1.5.1 is already released.

Joomla! 1.5.1 Fixes a security vulnerability in the XML-RPC Blogger API plugin which allows an unauthorized user to edit, post and delete articles. Joomla! 1.0.14 RC1 is released (you can download it from joomlacode.org).

I looked after a changelog.php, therefore I have noticed the activity connected with updating of Joomla! 1.0.x. But I did not expect, that release candidate will be released so quickly.

Two days ago, my laptop has broken down; therefore, last versions of all files of developed Mobile Joomla 3.0 have been lost. Thankfully, on the other computer it was saved files of ten-day prescription. From here a rule: always duplicate the data and on a regular basis make backups of the most valuable information. I have decided that the best way to duplicate Mobile Joomla files is to upload them to this site. Therefore receive Mobile Joomla 3.0.alpha!
I’ll update as far as possible these files with the indication of updating date and the basic changes.
I ask you to check the Mobile Joomla where only it is possible (in particular, I recommend ready.mobi). And inform me on all found out errors and problems. (more…)

Joomla! 1.5 RC4 — Introducing Karibu:

Just a week and a half ago people from all over the globe gathered in various locations to do a little Bug Squashing… today the fruits of their labour can be revealed as we announce the release of Joomla! 1.5 RC4. This release is code named Karibu which is Swahili for nearby, close, close by, at hand… all terms that we feel reflect the nature of this release.

Karibu marks an important milestone in 1.5’s development, as barring any major issues we believe it will be the last release candidate, with the next release being the big one… Joomla! 1.5 stable.

Mobile devices and SSL

Recently at a forum.joomla.org, it was raised a question: why it is not possible to visit a site through SSL-connection with the mobile device (really a question was another ). At the same time, all was ОК with a usual (desktop) browser.

After some experiments and search on the Internet I have understood, that the reason of such behavior can be only one: the majority of mobile devices contain only a few basic “root certificates” and not download other from the Internet.

PDA-mambot and “Login Form” module

Recently the following question is very popular:

When I try to login, I get an error message. Why?

The problem consists of several parts:

If it is specified in options of “Login Form” module to display a script at login or logout, the PDA cannot process this script and you will see the empty screen (or an error).
The PDA does not support cookies. In this case, Joomla! will display a script and you will see the empty screen (or an error).
The PDA supports cookies, but in full accordance with the standard:

Only hosts within the specified domain can set a cookie for a domain and domains must have at least two (2) or three (3) periods in them to prevent domains of the form: “.com”, “.edu”, and “va.us.” Any domain that fails within one of the seven special top level domains listed below only require two periods. Any other domain requires at least three. The seven special top level domains are: “COM”, “EDU”, “NET”, “ORG”, “GOV”, “MIL”, and “INT”.

In this case on some domains (e.g., without “www.” or with regional TLD) the PDA will not remember cookies and as a result Joomla! will solve that the PDA does not support cookies (see item 2).

How to make PDA-mambot work for Mambo site?

As far as I have understood from comments on this site (and even from a separate topic on forum.joomla.org), there is a big interest to the version of a PDA-mambot for Mambo CMS. The matter is that the version for Joomla cannot work in Mambo as the latter does not trigger “OnStart” event. In order to PDA-mambot start working, it is necessary to make changes to a index.php file and to modify slightly a PDA-mambot since in Mambo and Joomla the name of a new template is stored in different variables.

If you create a site for mobile devices, you need to solve the problem: how to distinguish the user, who has visited a site from a computer, from the user, who has visited a site from the mobile device? There are some scripts, which allow solving this problem:

But mobile devices strongly differ by the opportunities. Some devices support only WML, some—mobile XHTML, some (iMode)—cHTML. Moreover, there are some PDAs which fine displays usual HTML. Here the situation is more complex, and exists not so many scripts allowing to distinguish devices on these four groups.

Semiannual Report

It appears today this blog is half a year. So, I congratulate myself and all readers on the half-anniversary.

What have I made for half a year?

It is made and published a lot of useful (PDA-mambot, Popular-of-late, CAPTCHA, WeblogPing, etc.).
The blog has about 40 permanent rss-readers (according to Feedburner).
Google PR of the blog has gone up to 6 (quite good result for 6 months).
The blog has hit in Google TOP10 by such keywords as joomla mobile, joomla pda, pda mambot, pda testing, pda cms, joomla captcha, cms captcha, joomla ping, auto ping, optimize joomla queries, and also Denis Ryabov, interesting typography, unable to unarchive, and own strength .

In general, I value this as successful enough start.

However, the blog continues the life. First of all, it is owing to you, the attentive and thoughtful Reader! In fact, that can be better for the author, than a feedback, which acts to him in the form of grateful letters and comments. I will continue to please you further with useful interesting posts and extensions. And, taking an opportunity, I wish to ask you to leave in comments, along with congratulations, also the wishes: What subjects interest you most of all? About what you would want, that I wrote in the future?

Today I release promised “Google AdSense Mobile” module from “Mobile Joomla” package. To start earn money from the mobile version of a site, it is enough to set up and publish this module in one of pda-template positions. Discussion of PDA-mambot/plugin

I suggest to discuss prospects of further development of PDA-mambot/plugin.

I have following ideas:

Definition of browser type with the aid of WURFL library (it will be released in forthcoming version 2.2).
Support of three separate templates for wap, i-mode and wap2/xhtml mobile browsers.
Redirect to a corresponding subdomain for mobile devices.
Opportunity in template parameters to specify a logo and a slogan of a site.
Opportunity to view the mobile version of a site through a virtual directory (i.e. through http://site.com/pda/; it is useful if creation of a subdomain is impossible for any reason).
For Joomla!1.0 - additional postprocessing of generated pages. Probably, to add caching results of postprocessing.
For Joomla!1.5 - to include in a template(s) the changed layout of standard components and modules (that basically is impossible in Joomla!1.0).
A script for check of updates which can be started on the schedule (through cron, for example).
Also it would be quite good to reduce in passing big images that they don’t exceed the size of the mobile screen. But I do not know yet how to make it.
