The lesson here is the latgest provider is not always the best. In fact, we believe they have gotten too big, too successful to care about each customer. This is not the first time a company has become too large and drowns in its own success.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/joomlahostingreviews/~4/8UNzzHTc7-g" height="1" width="1"/>

CloudAccess Review: A Joomla-focused company that does it right

<img src="http://www.joomlahostingreviews.com/images/stories/jreviews/tn/tn_101_list_cloudaccesslogo_1298056206.png" border="0" alt="CloudAccess Review" title="CloudAccess Review" align="left" style="width: 180px; height: 130px" /> Sign up and Setup:

We found it easy to register for Cloud Access. The sign up process does not take long but could be shorter.

After this is complete, you are taken to the dashboard. Here you can manage account information and buy products. It is clean, intuitive and makes working with Joomla very simple.

Joomla install
To start a Joomla site click, “Launch Joomla! Application”. This takes you to the area where you can demo a Joomla site before signing up with Cloud Access. We chose to use install an instance of Joomla 1.7.

We clicked “Order Now” to start the demo. In the next screen it asks how we wanted to set up the domain. We chose to use the free Cloud Access domain to start with. Once order is complete you can start using Joomla.

Just type in the name of the domain you installed Joomla to and you will see the site is already installed and ready to go. Login by using “/administrator” after the domain. You can find your login information in a message sent to you account and email after install.

Using Joomla
We thought getting Joomla up and running was simple and easy. After it was set up and we were logged in, it was just like any other Joomla administrator backend.

What makes Cloud Access different is their custom control panel built into Joomla. It comes with several different options that are worth mentioning.

Resources:
In this section you can see plan related statistics like monthly bandwidth, disk space usage, and email usage. There is a tab that expands the bandwidth into a daily view to make it a little more detailed.

Backup:
This section utilizes a component called Akeeba Backup. It is the industry leader in Joomla backup. Cloud Access Incorporated this into their control panel, so no need to install it separately.

PHPMyAdmin:
One of the more unusual tabs to see inside of Joomla is PHPMyAdmin. This holds your Joomla databases accessible directly from the Joomla backend. This is very unique and not standard practice.

Clear All:
This is a one tab tool that’s sole purpose is to delete everything. It works great for deleting sample data that is installed with Joomla.

These control panel options are pretty cool. Cloud Access run most of the Joomla extensions that we run on our sites, but we think they could include many more. Having builtin backup is great and being able to access the database right from Joomla could save a lot of time. Other tools included in the Cloud Access control panel are Domain DNS, Domain Aliases, and Cron Jobs.

We like the built-in Joomla control panel, but think it is limited to the more advanced users. Using a service like Cloud Access assumes that you would rather have them be in control of the technical side instead of you.

Using Templates
On the front end of Cloud Access head over to the Templates section. If you purchase a Cloud Access hosting plan all of the templates are free and they will install them for you.

Another aspect of using Cloud Access that we like is that they will install any 3rd party templates for you for free too. In order to use this service, purchase on of the plans and then search the internet for any template you want to use. Email them and they will install it for you.

Speed
Cloud Access is really fast. Publishing a page in Joomla takes less then a second. We found it to be seamless, without any interruptions or issues. Cloud Access keeps things fast by having top notch server environments.

We think their speed is great, but we did wonder why they did not include a caching plugin as part of their Joomla bundle. This is something we would be installing to any of our Joomla sites. Caching would speeds up webpage delivery by a lot. Also, we think a plugin that allows easy access to a CDN would be an improvement. These are services that if provided by Cloud Access would improve their product.

After following the server response times for a few days using Pingdom, we found that Cloud Access' Servers are very fast. They delivered our test page below 800ms. That is great speed for shared hosting.

Support
We got help from support almost instantly. Even with only a demo site running, tech support gave us a quick response. We asked them if there was any way to not install Sample Data when Joomla was installed. They replied that their Joomla Configuration included Sample Data. We thought they could have mentioned their “Clear All” that will delete all menu items, modules, articles and categories. This gets rid of the Sample Data after install.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/joomlahostingreviews/~4/FhQ_mMqC3qw" height="1" width="1"/>

<img src="http://www.joomlahostingreviews.com/images/stories/jreviews/tn/tn_121_list_mediatemple180_1318529007.jpg" border="0" alt="Media Temple Review" title="Media Temple Review" align="left" style="width: 180px; height: 130px" /> Sign up & Set up

We had been wanting to try Media Temple for a long time because we have heard good things. After visiting the well-designed website, we talked to a representative to go through the set up process. It was pretty quick and painless. We bought the (gs) Grid Server plan and started moving our domains over.

After we signed up the login information was created and Emailed to us. Once logged into their custom control panel we were able to easily edit the DNS (Domain Name System) and get our domain up and going.

Control Panel

Like the rest of the Media Temple website, the control panel is simple and clean. If you’re used to working in cPanel you will enjoy the nice pretty graphics.

Some important facts to note about the Media Temple’s control panel are that you will have access to important areas like File Manager, Database Management, Domain Tools, Cron Jobs and more. Media Temple comes with some additional features that those of us who have used cPanel for a long time really enjoy having.

The GPU Usage Reports show a graph of usage and overusage. If there is a performance tip for a page it will be displayed next to the page that is taking a lot of the GPU. It will suggest making changes to that page to help it perform better.

We thought it was great to see a section for PHP Settings. This section allows you to select which version of PHP should go with each domain. If your website, CMS, or whatever platform you use needs and older version of PHP, this will save you significant time.

We think the control panel is well designed and implemented.

Speed & Reliability

Speed has been relatively fast using Media Temple. We are using a Media Temple a s place for one of our development sites at this time and we have noticed some unusual spikes in slowness from time to time. Besides those times, we have little interruption.

Reliability of Media Temple has been good since we started using them. We are in the middle of researching to see how much the server environment may play a role in our speed issues. We are on a shared server and, according to our Pingdom results, we have had fast response times at other hosts. Any inconsistencies we can report on more fully, we will. At this stage there is no reason blame Media Temple for slow responses.

*** UPDATE 2-3-2012 ***

After a few more weeks using Media Temple, we have come to the conclusion that their Grid Servers (gs) are not as fast as we need them to be. If your site relies on speed we do not recommend Media Temple's Grid Servers. Reasons are as follows.

After doing several tests using Pingdom.com speed test tools and WebPageTest.org we noticed that the main reason our site was having a slow response time was because of the Media Temple servers. What we measured is how long it took from initial connection with the server until we downloaded the first byte of information. On Pingdom tools, this is called the "wait" period and on WebPageTest.org it is called, time to first byte.

Here is a quick overview of what we discovered using WebPageTest.org

At Media Temple -- Time to first byte is 1.729s and our entire load time was 3.656s. This shows that the slow server is half the reason for the slow page load times.

At Site5 -- Time to first byte is .455s and the entire load time is 4.528s. A much faster connection to the server.

At HostGator -- Time to first byte is .524s and the entire load time is 5.598s. Again, much faster and averaging under .7s

Your overall speed can affect the ranking of your site a good bit. We will probably stop using Media Temple because of the slow speed. We would like to keep the server response under .7s.

Support

Using the support system with Media Temple is very easy. Their submit a ticket system is very clean and easy to use. While you are entering a title for the ticket, Knowledge base articles related to what you are typing are generated beneath the ticket. This is really slick and gives you an opportunity to see if there is any articles already covering that subject.

We really like when any company has 24/7 phone support and Media Temple does. To us this says that they are not afraid to work through technical issues with their customers.

*** UPDATE 2-3-2012 ***

We dealt with the tech support through the ticket system in our account about our speed issues and did not receive much helpful information. Our initial contact was polite and helpful, but he first asked us to test our site to see if we had things on our site slowing down the servers.

We did the tests and found, once again, that the main reason for our speed problem was due to their server. After explaining this to him in detail, we were passed off to a new person who explained to us how our CDN was the culprit and, in no way were the Media Temple servers to blame. We were passed around a total of 3 different technicians who all pointed to new tests to try and avoiding the real issues.

They sent us a picture of a test that showed their server performing faster than we can get it to go in all our tests. We felt like they were shifting blame and implying we are not tech savvy enough to understand how the server works. Overall, the experience was unhelpful and did not solve any of the issues we were wanting to resolve.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/joomlahostingreviews/~4/W9laMrm8d_g" height="1" width="1"/>

I have been shifted around to several customer support representatives trying to add a sub-domain that can be linked to my SmugMug account and am being taken in circles with know one able to fulfill my simple and straight forward request. They seem to be doing what they think I need instead of what I directly ask and since I cannot successfully edit my own C Name I am reliant upon them.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/joomlahostingreviews/~4/rhfRiirh68I" height="1" width="1"/>

Rochen Review: Good for Joomla - but Customer Support is NASTY!

You will have a hosting account preconfigured with many necessary tools etc. Speed is good, much better than hostmonster, but hosting space is limited and there is no customer support via phone.

But my number one complaint against them is their RUDE customer support tech people. Every time I have to deal with them, I question why I am still with them. It almost makes you wonder if they remember you pay their salaries. You would think they'd would treat customers better. If a similar hosting solution came along for Joomla, with friendly tech's - I could see Rochen out of business rapidly. I do not care how knowledgeable they are, they have no right to treat anyone with disrespect. And based on other reviews, this seems to be a frequent issue. Adam Boswell and Brad Baker seem to think they are excluded from being professional.

Overall a decent choice for Joomla, but the customer support puts a dark cloud over the whole company.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/joomlahostingreviews/~4/nFT1xGFiptQ" height="1" width="1"/>

Just Host Review: Fairly trouble free hosting

I am not running any up-time monitor but I have not experienced any down-time that I am aware of.

Sign up was straightforward and configuration was easy. Everything worked first time. If I needed to do anything I used the video tutorials they provided (you don't need to be a customer to use these).

I was informed that my SSL certificate was due to expire so purchased a renewal about 1 month in advance. 1 month later I was getting SSL expired messages when using my secure site - for some reason they need to set up a new certificate, I had not been informed so had not "approved" the new one even though it was a renewal. I was then told I should use a dedicated IP address (which I had already paid for) and tech support created an invoice for that. Eventually I had to contact accounts to cancel the erroneous invoice before tech suport could enable my certificate.

That said I would still recommend this company because apart from the one glitch (albeit quite serious and not well handled) I have had trouble free hosting and no issues with Joomla!<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/joomlahostingreviews/~4/tDPSh8aB59Q" height="1" width="1"/>

I also understood that uptime was supposed to be excellent because of their server infrastructure but have experienced four or five occasions when all my sites have gone down. Communication from Rochen was not good and the latest problem took a few hours to resolve.

Responses to my support queries have been curt and supercilious but timely. I can live with a bit of attitude but the number of outages is making me consider whether I wish to stay with Rochen.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/joomlahostingreviews/~4/nFT1xGFiptQ" height="1" width="1"/>

ZipCloud’s download and install process we easy. First we signed up at the website and logged into our account. As soon as we were logged in there is a large button that says, “Download Now”. This was clear, and we did not have any question about what to do.

On Windows: After downloading we started the install which only took one click. This could not be any easier. Once the installation is compete, the ZipCloud software automatically launches. The “ZipCloud Setup Wizard” is the first screen that is shown. Here is the choice of selecting to backup the “My Documents” folder or manually select all files and folders.

We chose to manually select files and folders. This opened a window allowing us to navigate the folders on the computer. The interface is clean and easy to use. Once the files are all chosen, the backup starts automatically.

On Mac: We downloaded the ZipCloud package and ran the install the same way it would be done for any app on Mac. Once installation is complete the software launches. The first screen is called the “ZipCloud Setup Wizard”. This allows you to select either the “Documents” folder or allows you to select manually.

We decided to use the manual selection. This opened a window that allows you to navigate the computer. After the selection is made, the backup automatically starts. The backup window shows the overall all progress of the backup with the file size of the backup displayed.

The backup process is simple, easy and starts immediately. This could not be much simpler.

File Backup
Backing up was easy and ran in the background without any issues. This process was easy and took little work to start. It is reliable and works without interference.

It is important to note that file size limit during initial backup set default to 2MB. Since most of our files are larger than that, our initial backup went a lot faster. We saw the first backup complete in less than 20 minutes because it only backed up 53.48 MB’s.

This method of getting the smaller documents uploaded first is understandable. However, if you are like us, it will be helpful to adjust the file size limit to “Unlimited”.

Backup Setting Configuration:
We found Zip Cloud to have some excellent backup configuration options making it a very flexible application. It should be noted that the windows version has a wider scheduling options. The windows software has been around longer than the Mac software which we hope will be upgraded in the future.

Here are the different settings available for backup.

General:
Here you can change the computer’s name and type. For Windows the computer type options are: PC, Laptop, Server, Other. For Mac they are: Mac, Macbook, Server, and Other.

Backup Scheduler:
The windows software has some great options, and the Mac software is very limited.

Windows has the option to schedule backups Hourly (upgrade charge), Daily, Advanced Schedule or Manual. The advanced schedule gives you the ability to set the backup for any type of schedule you want. Additionally you can set the the schedule to pause the backup. This can be handy if you do not want backups to run during work hours for instance.

For Mac you can set the backup schedule to Hourly (upgrade charge) and Daily. There are no advanced scheduling or pause features. This limits the use of the Mac version, but we hope that in the future ZipCloud will add the other advanced scheduling options.

We really like the easiness and functionality of the windows software, it has just about every backup feature you could want. We hope to see the Mac version brought up to the same standards as the Windows

Backup Selection:
This is where we use the software to select which files are going to be backed up. On Mac and Windows the settings are the same. The default option selects “My Documents” or you can Manually select all files or folders.

Beneath that section there is an area called, “File Size Limit”. This section limits the size of the files being uploaded to ZipCloud. It is set default to 2MB. This is good for the initial backup (because it reduces the overall size of the backup), but it will skip a majority of media or larger files. We moved this to limit sizes over 300MB’s for the second backup then moved it to Unlimited for the rest of the backups after.

File Types:
Only available for the Windows version. Here you place any file extensions that you would like to skip such as EXE / ISO / MPG / Etc. Be sure to check this file so your are not skipping any important file types such as MP3 or MOV.

Authentication:
This tab allows you to change or update your username and password.

Security:
In this section you can set the level of security during backup transfer. It is the same on Windows and Mac. There is a choice to use “HTTPS” which is more secure and “HTTP” which is normal and can be hacked.

Power and CPU
This tab is Windows only and gives you the option to pause backups when on battery power and only run the job when the screen saver is on. Both are very helpful options if you are running backups during your work day.

Restoring Files
ZipCloud has 3 methods of restoring data
1. ZipCloud software
2. ZipCloud website
3. ZipCloud Mobile

1. SOFTWARE: The software is incredibly easy to use and works the same on Windows and Mac. In the ZipCloud main app window, click “Restore Files”. Clicking this button opens a window that lets you navigate the computer. Once the files are selected restore by downloading the files to the computer.

Finally you click “Restore Selected Files” and the files are immediately restored. After downloading the files will be inside of a folder called “ZipCloud Restore”. This folder contains all of the files in the same structure as the appeared on your computer originally.

2. WEBSITE: Once at the ZipCloud website we clicked “View My Backed Up Files”. Clicking that takes you to a new screen where the files and folders are located. On the left column of the web page there is a box that lists the folders called, “Folder View”. Using the folder view we navigated through the files. Using the same window, the right column has a box called, “Browse Your Files Below”. This box shows the files within the folder that is selected on the left column. The movement between folders is very slick for a website.

To restore a file, simply click on the file and a message will appear asking if you want to save the file. While a file is selected there is a small arrow to the right that drops down a box showing options for “Previous Versions”, “Download File” and “Delete”. Clicking “Previous Versions brings up a log of each time that file has been updated during a backup. Click “Preview” to view the file and download the version wanted.

There does not appear to be a way to download folders. We think adding this feature would improve the ease of use on the website. Downloading files individually can take significantly longer than downloading whole folders.

3. MOBILE ACCESS: Using a phone with ZipCloud works pretty well. It does not have an app. Instead ZipCloud has a mobile version of the website that has access files from the phone’s browser. In the phone’s browser go to ZipCloud.com and login. Once logged in, the home screen shows some account information. We clicked “View Files” to look at our files. This interface uses the same tools available on the normal website. Saving the files to the phone will be limited to the files that the phone can use. We founded that playing music, saving pictures and videos should work for the most users.

Our opinion of the restore process is that it works seamlessly and it is very easy. We do think that improvements could be made such as version history in the software and full folder downloads from the website. The overall restore process compliments the the rest of the software by keeping the same easy-to-use consistency throughout the whole process.

Syncing:
ZipCloud automatically provides a “Sync Folder”. It is created as the software is installed. Any files added to this folder will automatically be uploaded to ZipCloud and downloaded to all computers attached to that ZipCloud account. ZipCloud chooses to separate the sync folder and the online backup utility which we think is smart.

The sync folder allows for 1GB of storage with upgrades of 5GB and 10GB available. The files within this folder have options to “Previous versions”, “Download file”, “Rename” and “Delete”. “Rename” being an added option.

We think that 1GB of storage is some what small. Most companies offer 2GB to 5GB for free. Perhaps this amount will be increased in the future. Also, an upgrade must be purchased in order to add a second computer to any account.

File Sharing:
We found sharing files with ZipCloud was very easy to do. When on the Zipcloud website navigate to the folder to be shared. While the mouse is on the folder, there is an arrow that appears to the right. Clicking the arrow reveals the sharing option. This opens a small window with the option to enter emails to whoever you want to share with. The recipient must also have an ZipCloud account. If they do not have an account they will be prompted to create a free one.

How sharing works from the recipients point of view:
1. They received the email about the shared folder
2. They clicked on the link then and are prompted to create a zipcloud account (if needed)
3. They login to ZipCloud and accept the shared folder.
4. They now have access to the contents of the shared folder.

Overall we think the sharing process is good but could use a little improvement. Getting to the files is easy for those accessing them, but in order to get the files on the server you must click “Backup Now” or wait until ZipDrive backs them up automatically. Other syncing services backup files and folders automatically as soon as they are added. This is better. Given the choice between no sharing and basic sharing option we would not want to give up the basic sharing. Perhaps ZipCloud will make some updates in the future.

Support:
We found support to be pretty good. We did not have any issues that required much technical assistance, but we think it’s important to note that they DO NOT have phone or live chat available. They have a well documented knowledge base and FAQ section. The best way to get support is by emailing the “Help Center”. This creates a support ticket that will be worked with until resolved.

Conclusion:
ZipCloud is a great company because they take advantage of both unlimited backup and cloud storage. We like their approach to offering both of these services. We also think they have a nice set of sharing features.

We found the Windows software to have more options than the Mac version. We would like to see these options added to the Mac version. These features include a detailed scheduler, auto pause feature and file type exclusion.

We would also like if some of the upgrades that cost extra be included for free. Features like larger folder sync storage capacity and hourly backup be included for free, or more scheduling options. At this time, some of the upgrades only bring the product up to the standards of other competitors which offer these same features for free.

ZipCloud works great for home users with multiple computers looking for online backup and cloud storage. With the addition of the sync folder, ZipCloud is ahead of the competition. We think this is a good product that will only get better.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/joomlahostingreviews/~4/CsHa1Rp84tU" height="1" width="1"/>
