AdminPraise v1.1

We've just released the latest version of our Joomla Administrator Template, AdminPraise. This release includes 2 major feature additions along with several smaller updated and bugfixes. The 2 new features are:
1. Component Quicklaunch - Inspired by the App Launch in Mac OSX, the top navigation now has a link to will open a launcher with icon links to all the components you have installed.

2. Custom Quick Icon Integration - CQI, which has just been released for Joomla 1.5, is an Administrator Component/Module that allows you to upload custom icons and add then to your cpanel quick icons. When installed, CQI will automatically become the 1st Accordion Dropdown in the AdminPraise cpanel and mini-cpanel. Why is this so great? You can now fully customize your AdminPraise quick icons on all pages of your admin site to quickly link to all your favorite pages.

You can now also completely turn off the left/right columns so they don't even load, rather than just collapsing them. This results in quicker load times.

Members, if you haven't tested AdminPraise yet, now's the time. We're now using it on all of our own sites and can't imagine Joomla development without it.
[Download]

Bye Bye 1.0

It's official. The Joomla 1.0.x series support will end July 22, 2009, as stated in an official post by Wilco Jansen [An old friend comes of age]. I'm sure this information will be received differently amongst the millions of Joomla users, but it's a good thing, believe me. Having to support two versions takes a ton of extra time for everyone, from the core team to our club. Joomla 1.0.x was fantastic and laid the groundwork for everything Joomla is now, but it is far less customizable and flexible. If nine months is enough time to birth a baby, it's enough time to put together a migration plan. With this announcement, you can be sure that developers will be releasing 1.5 versions of their extensions, if they haven't already. If not, it's probably not a project you should be following anyway.

So with that I make the official announcement that we will also stop developing and support 1.0.x versions of our template/extensions on the same date, July 22, 2009.

Big Things On The Horizon

If you could take a peak under the JoomlaPraise hood, you'd see that the engine is running on all cylinders. It's been 8 months since our February launch, and we have progressed from the "little template club that could" into a club that's making fairly successful attempts at changing the Joomla! experience. We've released 14 solid templates, one of which (AdminPraise) can hardly be called a template, as it's changing the way Joomla! sites are administered. We've also released 8 extensions, which range in scope from PraiseUrl, a simple but extremely useful module that reveals Joomla! system urls, to ProjectFork, which in all fairness existed before our club, but has been rebuilt from the ground, up while under the JoomlaPraise roof.

Ok, enough back-patting :) So where to next? Fall is going to be extremely exciting for JoomlaPraise!

First up, let's talk about ProjectFork. We'll be releasing a beta this month (before we get bombarded with emails, we don't have a release date yet ;). We recently made the move to eat our own dogfood and start using PF to manage all of our internal projects. This was pretty painful at first, but has helped us guide the project in a very productive direction. I can say that at this point, PF is actually helping our team stay on top of everything and it is a pleasure to use. The most recent features we've added that aren't publicly available are:

Milestone ordering: extremely useful in prioritizing

Task Quicklinks: links to quickly Edit, Finish, or Comment on a task

Progress Dropdown: dropdown box to quickly change progress percentage of a task

Milestone Percentage: a percentage of completion calculated from a milestone's tasks completion

Email Notification: configurable email notifications for new and modified tasks

Calendar Dates: now project and task dates show on the calendar

Discussion Board: messages are pivotal for project management, now teams can have discussions in a central location

Here's a preview of the new Task Section (shown using an upcoming alternate theme):

Next up, we have AdminPraise, which is quickly becoming our most popular template/extension (it's not fair to simply call this a template). AdminPraise started as an attempt to optimize the Joomla admin site on an iPhone and has transformed into a movement to make the entire Joomla administrative experience more streamlined. Here's the latest great features we're working on:

CQI Integration: While the AdminPraise cpanel and mini-cpanel icons are extremely helpful, they're not customizable. To alleviate this, we've connected with the developers of CQI (Custom Quick Icons), an admin component/module combo that replaces the standard cpanel icons. When installed, CQI will automatically show up in a sliding div in the AdminPraise cpanel and mini-cpanel, allowing for custom icons and ALL admin pages.

Component Quicklaunch: With all the navigation options of AdminPraise, the one core feature we miss is the component dropdown. Rather than simply incorporate this feature, we've decided to one-up it. AdminPraise will have a link which will use mootools to open a grid of all installed components, with larger logo links, rather than just text links.

Turn Off Left/Right Columns: With all these new navigation options, a user may wish to completely turn off the left or right column, rather than simply collapsing them, which will result in quicker load times since the necessary JavaScript won't load.

Here's a preview of the AdminPraise cpanel with CQI integration (and the left column turned off):

A new version of PraiseSlides is in the works, which will come packaged with several themes, all of which will be easily customized. Customization has always been the biggest request for PraiseSlides, so this release is a direct result of customer requests. We're also adding several key features:

Top/Right/Bottom/Left Nav: Place the navigation wherever it fits best for your needs

Slide Direction: Choose whether your content slides in from the top, right, bottom or left

Fade Transition: Choose whether you content slides or fades

Here's a preview of a top or left navigation using one of the new theme selections:

Let's talk templates, since after all, we are a template club. We're currently developing a duo of Tableless Templates which will use the most html template overrides we've ever used to allow for a tableless Joomla site. For those who've followed JoomlaPraise since our 1.5 Template Contest entry, we actually developed a tableless version of our template way back then, and we're reintroducing these overrides to all of our future templates.

Lastly, we've received a ton of requests to purchase our templates individually. We're developing something to facilitate this, and a whole lot more :) More on that soon, stay tuned!

ProjectFork 2.0 Alpha is now available!

After weeks of hard work I'm happy to announce a new release of ProjectFork! I actually had something released yesterday night, unfortunately it contained a critical bug which has been fixed in today's re-release. So if you have downloaded the 2.0 Alpha yesterday or today before this message, please uninstall and download again.

What's new in 2.0 Alpha?

I'm sure that some of you are probably confused about the difference between this alpha release and the previous pre-alpha release. Our development process simply follows the standard software release life cycle as described on wikipedia.

When working on big projects like ProjectFork, I always think of them as a big puzzle. You start with laying out the frame and then add piece by piece until you get the final picture. So what you see in this release is an almost finished picture of the final product. Some functionalities and the behavior of the system may be confusing which is because of the missing puzzle pieces. Anyway, I hope that you enjoy the way this is all going and that you begin to see the full picture.

This time I've focused a lot on the config section where you can manage/install and uninstall all the different extension types of ProjectFork. As I've mentioned in my last blog entry, ProjectFork is now a modular system comparable to Joomla. So the config section is actually the interface to the heart of ProjectFork.

Please note that this release is still unstable and you should not attempt to uninstall any of the extensions that come with the current release. It would most likely knock out the entire system. You can however unpublish or publish the different extensions.

Project Workspace

Another new feature I've added is the "project workspace". Think of it as a permanent project filter which allows you to quickly switch between different projects and project related information. The feature is still in an experimental stage and will likely change until the final release.

Roll your own!

At this point it is possible for you to create your own extensions for ProjectFork. And if you would like translate ProjectFork, you can simply create an install-package and distribute it on your website or send an email to support@joomlapraise and we will publish it here. Unfortunately I had no time to prepare any documentation for you guys so far, but I promise to present you some first examples and tutorials next week. If you can't wait to get started, I recommend that you explore the code of the existing extensions that come shipped with this release.

Download ProjectFork 2.0 Alpha

- Tobias

Approve and publish and article to your frontpage from an email link

On a side note, we had the wonderful surprise of hearing that SubmitMailer helped one of our members detect a hacker exploiting the 1.5.5 bug where the admin account can get hijacked:

Up Next - AdminPraise

We've been working hard on a new Joomla! 1.5 administrator template. There's so much power in a Joomla! site, it's hard to make navigation "easy" and the default Khepri template is extremely good, but confusing for beginners. We've taken customer and personal feedback into consideration in our totally unique approach. Here's a rundown of the feature set so far:

All New Control Panel featuring accordion div and all new icons

Mini Control Panel on all subpages with mini icons

More Relevant grouping of icons in Control Panel and Mini Control Panel

Left Administrator Accordion Navigation (as opposed to cumbersome dropdown menu)

Collapsible left and right columns for smaller monitors and phones

Administrator Site-wide Search

Quicklinks to System Info, File Manager and Admin Template Parameters

Template queries which File Manager (joomlaXplorer, ninjaXplorer, etc.) link to use

New Components List page (reminiscent of "More Components..." from Joomla! 1.0.x)

Logo link to your user account page

Quickly replace Admin logo

Updated version of Joomla! accordion to allow multiple open accordions

Slick new interface styling (from an obvious fruit phone inspiration)

This list keeps getting longer the more we test the template and we want to make sure this baby is as bug free as possible, so we're hoping for a release by next Friday.

Until then, here's some screen shots:

Instantly check your keyword ranking

For anyone concerned with their search engine efforts (which should be everyone), we've recently done a custom Joomla template for a new site that has built some great technology on Joomla 1.5, SearchPageRankings.com. SPR (as we call them) offers a very cool free feature in which you get Google search results instantly, as you type your keywords (you must enter you domain name first of course). This is a nice way to check mulitple variations of keywords by simply backspacing and typing more words, inspired by another great site InstantDomainSearch.com, which shows you domain availability as you type. The search results are more human friendly than Google, because the results are numbered and your domain will show up in a different color.

SPR's instant domain search is just the tip of the iceberg though. If you create an account, you can rank 3 keyword phrases, and track those keywords over time. This is extremely useful in tracking how you're doing with competing sites, as you can see which sites are moving up or down over time. An even cooler feature is that you can have these results emailed to you in intervals that you define. Here's a tour of their features.

There are subscription packages for 5-20 keywords, and you can choose to pay monthly or yearly for a discounted rate.

Here's a couple of shots of the instant search and keyword history:

AudioPraise is Ready to Rock!

AudioPraise (formerly titled SoundPraise) is now available for download! AudioPraise is a bold, high-impact template. The coolest feature is a vertical blog layout for Frontpage Slideshow. Traditionally FPSS is used to display rotating banner images, and it does a great job, but we wanted to use multiple articles with background images in AudioPraise, so we basically stripped out the CSS and JavaScript FPSS uses to rotate the banners. So basically, the only feature of FPSS that would be used is the admin, because it makes it so easy for users to upload images and add new banners.

Of course, AudioPraise has lots of design and template features as well. AudioPraise comes packaged with 3 great themes, each of which featuring 3 module styles and unique iconography. Here's the list of features and parameters:

3 Color Themes each with 3 Module Styles and Iconography

A Totally New and Unique Frontpage Slideshow Style

Custom Background Color

Custom Header Color

Custom Font Color

Custom Link Color

Custom Link Hover Color

Tee it up, GolfPraise is available!

Wind of Change

The Wind of Change isn't just a great 80's metal ballad by the Scorpions, it's a sign that JoomlaPraise is growing and evolving! For our users, there has been a bit of radio silence this month. I assure you it's due to lots of hard work behind the scenes.

The biggest update is an entire site refresh to JoomlaPraise.com. We've taken feedback from our users and totally refactored the JoomlaPraise design and template. The current site design is good and earned us some wonderful members, but lacks a certain "pop" commonly found in our designs. The biggest improvement though, is the site navigation. As more areas were added to the current site, we honestly ran out of space and groups many links illogically. The new site navigation clearly groups account navigation in one menu, and site navigation in another. We also opted to use more common link naming conventions.

Here's a quick comparison of the new and current site designs:

Look for this new design to roll out as early as Friday!

We'll also be releasing our latest club template, SocialPraise, along with a slideshow module named PraiseShow.
