Preliminary testing reports have revealed some minor issues with our templates and extensions when used with Joomla! 2.5. The power of JAT3 will make upgrade tasks easier and faster. However, we still do not release anything without routine testing / checks. No hasty releases will be done just to be first to the post. Customer satisfaction is our ultimate goal.

Right-to-left Joomla templates: RTLize your layout with T3 Framework

Since more than one year, I discussed with Joomlart's CEO (Hung) about the necessity to do a native RTL template. Actually, I was unhappy to see all these automaticlly mirrored templates with a global code: "direction: rtl" that send the vertical scroll to the left side of the screen and cause more issues than solutions. Yes, I read from right to left but I use my right hand to scroll pages and I have the same visual logic as readers of Left-to-Right scripts.

A language is described as right-to-left (or RTL) if writing starts from the right of the page, and continues to the left. Right to left scripts are:

Arabic alphabet - used for Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Kurdish, Bashto, Old Malay and many other languages.
Hebrew alphabet - used for Hebrew, Yiddish and some other Jewish languages.
Syriac alphabet - used for varieties of the Syriac language.
Thaana - used for Dhivehi.
N'Ko script - used for several languages of Africa.

Having a stimulating opportunity to do a portal for "Aratypo: Arabic Typography" for my team of Arabic typeface creators and graphic designers, I decided to use JA Erio in this strategic project and I started to "rtlize" the template as would be naturally read by native Arabic visitors.

How To Clone the Demo using QUICKSTART Installation - A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

The premise and principles of Quickstart installations are applicable to our Joomla, Magento and Drupal templates and themes alike. For the purposes of this article, Joomla is used as the CMS example.

As a JoomlArt Moderator and Support Team Member, I frequently see questions and issues within the Community Forum and Support Tickets from Members with regard to some having difficulty to successfully perform a QUICKSTART INSTALLATION. Many users simply want to either replicate a virtual clone of a template's demo showcase, or have just certain aspects of their site to look/function "just like the demo."

The value of a Quickstart Installation

In a nutshell ... being able to begin the modification/customization process from a virtual clone of the template demo as a starting point.

Admittedly, when first starting to work with Joomla, it is easy to be resistant to utilize a Quickstart installation for a template. Some don't like the thought of having to install another complete installation of Joomla - be it locally with XAMPP/WAMP or on one's web server. It is also understandable why more intermediate/advanced Developers might prefer to start with more of a "blank slate" insofar as a feeling of "complete control" over the creation of their own structures and content from scratch.

Today we are trying out something interesting. We switch on Facebook comment for the few next posts to be used parallel to our in-house comment system and want to get a feel of how users react on this move.

Why use Facebook comment now?

Due to the fact that our Facebook fan base is reaching 5.000 users we thought it makes sense to allow people to interact and express their opinions using Facebook comment system. This way ideas are spread more broadly and will attract more interactions from friends outside of JoomlArt's loyal readership.

What is good if we use Facebook comment?

1. It is more engaging and we are reaching more people outside Joomla guys as well. It allows FB followers of a commenter on our blog post to read/like/share, which would not be visible to those followers with traditional comment system.

2. Good for decreasing our page size. By using FB comment plugin it will take down the css and loading time from our site, as it loads external sheets and files.

JA T3 Framework hotfix for Joomla 1.7 upgrades

Dear members & friends,

Looking to the difficulties faced by our members in upgrading to Joomla 1.7 from current joomla 1.6, we release a quick hotfix for T3 plugin (version 1.3.0 beta). Testing is on full swing and we are committed to release the Joomla 1.7 compatible products (extensions & templates) at an earliest.

Why is the delay?

Based on our earlier experience (joomla 1.6), we waited for the stable release of Joomla 1.7, so that we have to release less versions in quick sucession. As quick version release for templates adds to more work on the member side as he she has to redo his / her customization.
Due to active development most of the templates / extensions already have already code edits (bug fixes / improvements) committed in svn, which needs to be tested apart from testing for Joomla 1.7 compatibility. So most of the releases might be bug fix plus J 1.7 compatible. This process doesn't allow us to give exact timeframe for releasing each product.
During last week we have released bug fix updates for 18 of our Joomla 1.6 templates making them compatible for Joomla 1.6.5, which brings them very close to Joomla 1.7 compatibility. So its just matter of time, mainly for testing.
Delivering high quality products is what we strive for.

We apologize for any inconvenience and a lack of proper communication for the Drupal club so far. Internally we have been working really hard to create a new basetheme that will facilitate the theming process both for customers and for our team as well.

As with any CMS Drupal has it’s own standards and guides how to work with it and apparently we needed a bit more time to really dive deeper into it’s system. Drupal has a very steep learning curve and provides a very flexible and complex theme layer and API.

Final Joomla 1.6 Template Release - JA Templates Plan for Joomla 1.7

We are happy to roll out JA Edenite as last of the upgraded template for Joomla 1.6, based on the JoomlArt T3 V2 Framework. July will see regular Joomla 1.6 template being released. August onwards, we shall have templates for Joomla 1.7 and all joomla 1.6 templates will be taken up for upgrade to Joomla 1.7 and once completed, we shall resume the upgrade of older templates to joomla 1.7.

Over the past 6 months we upgraded and released total of 23 templates for Joomla 1.6, this includes free GPL JA Purity II Template and T3 V2 framework distro with JA Blank template. These do not count towards our regular monthly releases.

Finally we got it out! Surely you have noticed from the homepage that we have changed the design several days ago. Thanks to the design team for their creative effort to improve accessibility for visitors. This is a major design refinement since our Joomla site update from June 2010.

I believe users are always the best UI/UX experts you can ever find. They are telling you the truth that are translated in your analytics data. Study them and you cannot go wrong. So what are the MAIN ACTIONS we want users to do when they visit our site?

I'd like to share some thoughts about clear desired actions a visitor would ideally follow depending on how far he is already engaged with JoomlArt!

Upgrade to Joomla 1.6 or stick with J1.5?

There has been a lot of confusion around Joomla 1.6 recently. After 3 years of heavy coding this major upgrade has been finally released in early 2011. Right now many users are wondering what 3rd party support for J1.6 will look like in the next months. Does it make any sense to start a website in J1.6 at the moment? How long should I wait until making any movements for my clients?

This is how the development plan for coming Joomla core versions look like. Based on that it might be easier for you to make judgements whether and when to upgrade or build new sites in J1.6 for your clients.
