The King and I Manila bids Goodbye with Final Shows and a Collectible Book

As the curtains slowly close for Resorts World manila's smash stage musical, The King and I invites everyone to see the final shows this weekend. The 25th ALIW Awards Best Musical will have their final shows today, May 25, 2PM and 7PM; and tomorrow, May 26, 2PM. Be there and experience for the last time the majestic Siam through Rodgers' and Hammerstein's enduring classic.

Resorts World's Cinderella Revealed: Karylle Tatlonghari

Just got an update about Resorts World's Cinderella the Musical. Joining Christian Bautista who's playing Prince Christopher is his long time partner in crime -- Karylle Tatlonghari.

Though I'm not really doubting Karylle's skill in acting, I can't help but be underwhelmed with the cast choice. Karylle and Christian has been working as a tandem ever since West Side Story and recently they did two more projects with The Kitchen Musical and Rama Hari, I just feel that they are relying on their comfort zones while RW is becoming too safe. But despite what I feel, I'm still looking forward to see this musical because it is my favorite among all the Rodgers and Hammerstein works.

Also joining Karylle and Christian as Alternates are Fred Lo and Justine Peña. Fred is known from his breakthrough performance from 9 Works Theatrical's Rent as Mark Cohen while Justine is first introduced in Professional theater through Repertory Philippines' Camp Rock. Both are now co stars on a Rock Musical based in Sugarfree music titled Sa Wakas.

Looking forward to hear more about the show. Cinderella is set to premiere in Newport Performing Arts Theater in September 2013. Stay tuned for more updates.

Christian Bautista and Michael Williams Locked Down for Cinderella

Resorts World Manila's staging of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is now gaining traction and starts by securing their first cast member. Today, Christian Bautista signed a contract with Resorts World Manila and he is now set to play the role of the Prince.

Together with his manager Carlo Orosa of Stages and Resorts World Manila officials. Also on the photo is the stage director and actor Michael Williams. There is still no confirmation if he is directing the show or will also be one of the cast.

Christian Bautista is now joining the ranks of Jon Cypher, Paolo Montalban and Peter Saide who are just some of the most iconic actors who played the role of the royal higness Prince Christopher Rupert Windemere Vladimir Karl Alexander Francois Reginald Lancelot Herman Gregory James (whew). In my opinion, this role is a piece of cake for Christian. I also believe his voice range is just right for the music.Now all we need to know is who's playing Cinderella. That's a big shoe to fill. I hope they get the right girl for the role.

It is confirmed that the show is to be directed by the veteran theater director and actor Michael Williams. Known as one of the best director and actor local theater, Williams is definitely a good choice for the job. Now I'm more excited. I'm now relieved that the show is in good hands.

Going Back in Time: D Wonder Twins of Boac Review

The first time I heard about PETA's D Wonder Twins of Boac, I immediately dismissed it since it is an adaptation of a Shakespeare play. I confess that I'm not really familiar with the source material and I don't really want to pretend that I'm interested to see it. But then I found out that one movie I saw before is actually adapted on the same play. So I decided to give it a try.

Basically the whole story revolves around twins separated by fate. The show though focused more on Viola (Cris Villonco) who got tangled on a comedy of errors in the world of 1967 Showbiz. It is a hilarious topsy turvy unfortunate events that makes her meet different people until she actually becomes reunited with her brother Bastian (Chrome Cosio). It is an absolute laugh trip to say the least.

Just basing my comparison to another adaptation, I believe D Wonder Twins perfectly adapted 12th Night and successfully brought it to local settings in the late 60's. The writers managed to match every character and created such variety of faces that illustrates the industry back on those era. The only weird thing that I notice is the title. To those who knows 12th Night, they will not argue about the misleading element of the title. To Shakespeare virgins, they will definitely assume that the show will be all about the twins but like what we all know, the show is majorly about Viola's life while Bastian is missing.

Cris Villonco's performance as Viola is excellent to say the least. Never really doubt her ever. First time to see her play a male role though. Not really perfect but enough for the character. I also enjoyed Ms. Shamaine's take of Olivia. The rest of the cast did very well on giving us an entertaining show making us laugh and shed some tear or two.

D Wonder Twins successfully gave us a serving of a classic literature at the same time it also gave us a peek back in time where the glitz and glamor hides the bitter truth behind local showbiz industry. It is a fun ride all together but ends with a powerful eye opener to things we don't really see beyond the spotlights.

Still Believing in Love: They're Playing our Song Review

After a year of hiatus, 9 Works Theatrical came back with a simple yet captivating production with Neil Simon, Carole Bayer Sager and Marvin Hamlisch's They're Playing Our Song.

Like what 9 Works Theatrical established for the past years, they chose to stage something way back in the calendar. In my opinion it is a big gamble for them because they don't really know if people will actually go and pay to see classics. But since most competitors are already staging more recent shows, 9 Works humbly stepped down and decides to restage long forgotten masterpieces.

Once again, Like Sweet Charity, They're Playing Our Song surprised me. The show is energetic and extremely funny. Though the rest of music is not really my cup of tea, the book alone captivated my senses. What really draws me to Vernon and Sonia's story is they are not fantasy. Well it is loosely based on the real love story of Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, it means the romance is real. It is not like any love story you see on romantic movies or novels. The relationship don't follow any status quo. You will only experience pure and unadulterated romance between two person who in my own opinion doesn't have any chemistry at all.

Yes, you heard me right. Chemistry don't exist in real world and that is how I see Vernon and Sonia's relationship. Just like the actors who play them, Nikki Gil (Sonia) and Lorenz Martinez (Vernon) don't have the spark. But both definitely have the comedic chemistry for they both are naturally funny. Nikki had stepped up once again. She now makes her mark as she becomes one of the favorite theater performer that comes from our mainstream showbiz. I definitely enjoyed watching her now as the eccentric Sonia Walsk. Lorenz Martinez as expected makes us laugh with his spontaneous sarcasm but beyond that he proved that he can play a leading man type as he left girls (and some men) swooning over his charming voice as he play Vernon's role.

I enjoyed the performance of the voices played by Reb Atadero, James Stacey, Noel Rayos, Jill Peña, Peachy Atilano and Anna Santamaria. But they are easily overlooked. Not that it is their fault. In fact they gave it all they got. The only problem is the limitations of script.

The only time they actually shine in the show is when they are on this bar scene where they played completely different characters. One of them stands out. Peachy Atilano is definitely ready for matured roles without looking like an underage girl.

And the stage. The magnificent stage. If you think the show is simple and intimate, the set is the complete opposite. The set is bursting with details. All the elements are detachable and can be removed and attach every time they are needed. The stage also used a round table mechanism which is intentionally used to simulate a turntable. Looks like They're Playing Our Song's set is practically more expensive than Rent and Sweet Charity combined. Mio Infante totally outdid himself. This is probably one of his finest yet.

If I have to compare any contemporary to They're Playing our Song. It has to be Music and Lyrics. Like the musical, Music and Lyrics tells a story of a composer and a Writer/Lyricist. Like Sonia and Vernon, Alex (Hugh grant) and Sophie (Drew Barrimore) don't have any chemistry but their is an X-Factor that makes them look good together. Both stories tells a roller coaster relationship that's not so conventional like most stories are.

In a nutshell, They're Playing Our Song will make you fall in Love in an unconventional way. This is not like your average teleserye or "kilig" movie. Experience the romance, watch the show as it closes today at 4pm. Get your tickets at Ticketworld and call 8919999. It is not too late to celebrate Valentines, celebrate it with something real. Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella Soon in Resorts World Manila

After the successful staging of The Sound of Music and the ongoing The King and I, Resorts World Manila now revealed their next production. Well the next Rogers and Hammerstein Musical to say the least since there is still no schedule for the show (possible that there will be other shows before this). But they are proud to announce that they are now open for auditions for the musical Cinderella.

Before, my favorite musical of Rogers and Hammerstein is definitely The Sound of Music but when I saw Cinderella, I became an instant convert. I'm kind of a late bloomer since I first saw it in TV (1997) with Brandy as Cinderella, Paolo Montalban as Prince Chritopher and the late Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother.

Then fast forward to 2008 here comes the Manila production through Broadway Asia starring Lea Salonga as Cinderella and Directed by Bobby Garcia (Atlantis Production). fallen in love with its grace and beauty, I decided to look for a copy of the 1957 TV production starring none other than Julie Andrews.

I thought that will be the last time I'll see that stunning show. But thanks to Resorts World, I will experience it again. They are now calling for talented actors and performers for Cinderella. Details about the audition is on this link.

I admit that seeing 3 versions of this gave me the right to have a high standard for the leads to the rest of the cast. This production is a very energetic and lively one and I don't know if I can forgive RW if they will not at least give the same quality as the one presented 5 years ago. Sending all of my luck to them and hope they pick the right people for this show and I will be happy to experience it once again.

I can't really comment if Nikki and Lorenz are perfect for the roles since I haven't seen "They're Playing..." but basing on their previous work I definitely approve Nikki and Lorenz because they both have comedic timing. ...and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved Broadway musical “The King and I’s” extended run until May 2013 — Philippine Musical Theater’s favorite leading lady Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo was announced as replacement for Monique Wilson in the role of Anna Leonowens.

Oh do you think this is a game changer for the show? Definitely. We know how great Menchu is. Looking forward to see her performance next year.

This is Our Song: Camp Rock the Musical Opens November 16

Before the year ends, theater fans will be enjoying another Disney hit musical that captured many fans across the globe. If you are a fan of Disney Musicals such as The Cheetah Girls, Hannah Montana and High School Musical, this next Repertory Philippines offering is definitely for you.

Camp Rock the Musical is a stage adaptation of the Disney Hit Camp Rock Series. It tells the story of Mitchie Torres (Morisette Amon) and her gang as they spend the whole camp season for another musical filled summer. But everything turns upside down when rival camp, Camp Star threatens Camp Rock's existence. So now Mitchie together with Shane Gray (Markki Stroem), his brothers and the rest of the Campers step up for one final showdown. The battle for the last Camp standing is definitely on!

I'm glad that the musical is mostly based on Camp Rock 2. Camp Rock 1 is good but the story is too centered on the romance between Mitchie and Shane. Camp Rock 2 shifted to a more interesting phase as they went on a story driven approach highlighting the whole Camp Rock itself and the new Camp Star. If you like the music of High School Musical and other Disney Channel Musicals, Camp Rock's songs are definitely for you.

Among the front liners for the cast includes Markki Stroem (Next to Normal) who's playing Shane Gray, the role played by Joe Jonas on the original movie. Joining him is newcomer Moresette Amon, a rising singer and actress for the role of Mitchie as popularized by the X-Factor judge Demi Lovato.

The rest of the cast is joined by Nacho Tambunting, Jef Flores, Cheska Ortega, Justine Peña, Nel Gomez, Cara Barredo, Mica Fajardo, David Shawn Delgado, Kiara Dario, Justin Valiente, Hans Braga, Karyl Factora, Eric Mercado, Rem Zamora and Hans Eckstein. The show will be directed by Audie Gemora who directed High School Musical years ago through Stages.

I actually like this execution. I'm happy they are not going with the full body paint idea. This costume has the touch of the original character design but in a more realistic and practical fashion. A New Bona, A New Classic: Play Review

Who among us are annoyed of remakes and reboots. This is probably the most rampant creative process that is being adapted both abroad and in local entertainment industry. Though most reboots and remakes in Hollywood fairly displayed good reinventions, original classics stays superior and one of a kind. In local entertainment scene it is rare to see remakes that really shines and most of them are slammed by critics and regular fans. When will we see a remake that is if not much better is as good as the original. I think we already have with PETA's latest offering: BONA.

To be honest I'm the kind of person who rarely watch movies older than me. It is not really based on artistic taste but more on content. I first saw Bona months ago when it is broadcasted in Cinema One. Their I found out why it becomes a classical genius. But personally it is the movie that I don't enjoy watching. It is depressing and it can definitely get in to your nerves. Bona before is like most of the Indie films now. That is the reason why I'm not an avid indie watcher. Now PETA on its latest season braved the tides and create a theatrical play based on the original. I say they are brave because it is not easy to adapt something that is considered a classic. Many tried (mostly on TV) but they miserably faile. I believe that PETA will absolutely have a bad time not only on staging but also on promoting but I guess I'm wrong. Enter Eugene Domingo and the game changes.

Now, do the play itself live up to the expectations? Yes because the show promises something very entertaining and with Eugene on board you won't even doubt that promise. Eugene is a brilliant comedic performer. Give her 10 lines and she will perform hundreds. Her ad lib makes the whole audience crack out of laughter almost every scene. She knows how to deliver even the most simplest joke and make it the most hilarious thing you ever heard without being corny. And Eugene is not the only one who delivered excellent performances. The whole ensemble are composed by a good mix of veteran and newbies that knows how to react to Eugene's comedic attacks. Specially her supporting character Joey Paras whom I really enjoyed watching ever since I saw him in Zsazsa Zaturnnah.

The only thing probably purist will not be comfortable of is the complete upgrade of the Bona Myth. There are a lot of things replaced from the original material and the sudden shift from straight drama to a Dramatic Comedy. If I would be asked, I will be very bias because I don't really like depressing movies so I will definitely prefer this new version. But I believe that this new version stands independently from the original. The original is definitely the classic and it will never be replaced by any remakes. This new Bona is a NEW classic in the making that this generation will remember for the next decades (or even century).

The show is great but of course for me there are some imperfections. [SPOILERS ALERT] First, I see the significance of the Boy Abunda clip but I believe that there are more much better way to express that same idea the writer is trying to show on that particular scene. The tension of the iconic scene is abruptly cut with that less emotional clip. I'm not sure if they already edited this particular scene but I believe a lot of critics don't like this part of the show. And lastly, I feel short changed with that iconic finale. I felt that the pain is not enough. Edgar Allan's execution for me didn't translate to what that pain should feel. I know how it feel and what I experienced is probably 1/100 of what Edgar's character should feel. It is a pain made in hell and I didn't felt it. And then that Boy Abunda clip suddenly cuts in which adds to be disappointment.

Bona is definitely a show worth recommending for. Like I always say, sometimes the journey counts more than the destination. So despite the weak ending, the whole show compensates for that for giving the audience an entertaining and insightful ride. PETA, you rock! Congratulations. A Twisted Return to Hogwarts: Potted Potter Review

Saw Potted Potter last Tuesday and just like what I expected, I enjoyed it a lot. I really thought before that the magic of the books stopped in the movies but I guess J.K. Rowling's legacy will live on different ways you can't even expect and this show is just one of them.

Potted Potter is a story telling session fused with stand up comedy act conceived by Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner. When I first heard of it, I'm quite puzzled on how will they cram all those 7 books to a very brief 70 minute show. In that case, every book has an average of 10 minutes each? How is that possible? Well you won't really understand it until you see it for yourself. Surprisingly, 70 minutes is enough to give entertainment to the audience and make everybody laugh and have a good time. There are wizard battles, dragon, Nagini and even the famous Quidditch is inserted on the show where audience is given the chance to participate. Ha! You really need to see that part of the show because it is totally fun.

I love both of the actors featured in the show. Jesse Briton and Gary Trainor carried the whole performance excellently. Both actor has good chemistry and they have managed to forge a perfect rapport with the audience. I also noticed that some scenes are improvised and ad libs are performed based on how the audience will react to a certain dialogue or joke. The actors came well prepared of local facts that they can use to personalize the script and make it a little unique for Manila.

But if people are expecting that they will be educated with Harry Potter facts, you may not get it. Because this show is strongly parodied. It is so twisted that you can't hardly see the HP reference if you never read the books or watch the movies. In other words, only Harry Potter fans can fully enjoy it.

The Phantom of the Opera Manila: Glimpse on the Cast

Finally The Phantom of the Opera is opening in Manila tomorrow much to the delight of all the fans across the nation. But before we see this fine masterpiece by the living legend Andrew Lloyd Webber, let us all take a quick glimpse on the actors that will play the characters that captured our hearts for years since 1986.

Jonathan Roxmouth as the Phantom
South African-born Jonathan has received numerous awards and nominations from South Africa’s premier theatre. For his outstanding performance as The Phantom for the show’s South African season, he was awarded Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical in the 2012 Fleur Du Cap Awards.

Jonathan also won the Fleur Du Cap Award, as well as the highly respected Naledi Award, for Best Performance in a Musical for the lead role of Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. He also received a Naledi Award Nomination for Best Performance in a Musical for the lead role of Danny Zuko in Grease, and nominations for both a Naledi Award and Fleur Du Cap Award for his performance in A Handful of Keys.

Jonathan has performed lead and principal roles in numerous award-winning musicals such as Cats, Beauty and the Beast, The King and I, Grease, The Buddy Holly Story and Jesus Christ Superstar in USA, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

Producer Tim McFarlane, Managing Director of The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific, said “When I first saw Jonathan’s performance as The Phantom I recognized an exceptional talent, and his interpretation of this iconic role is exciting, fresh and immensely powerful. Claire Lyon as Christine Daaé
Classically trained, Claire graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne in Australia, with a Bachelor of Music Performance.

Most recently Claire has performed the role of Christine numerous times in the new and highly acclaimed Australian production or Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies, the sequel to THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

Prior to joining the cast of Love Never Dies, Claire was a renowned member of Australia’s national opera company, Opera Australia, performing in numerous classic operas such as The Merry Widow, Madame Butterly, Aida, La Traviata, Peter Grimes, Tosca and Carmen. She also performed the roles of Ida in Die Fledermaus and Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro, and performed in the world premiere of Opera Australia’s Bliss, which went on to enjoy success at The Edinburgh Festival.

As a soprano soloist, Claire has performed in oratorio works such as Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle and Bach’s B Minor Mass and Cantata Number 149 with the Victorian College of the Arts Orchestra.

“Claire is the perfect Christine,” said Mr. McFarlane. “She has the most exquisite voice which imbues the role with just the right blend of vulnerability, passion and tragedy. She is a beautiful performer.”

And of course the whole show is nothing without the supporting cast who are equally talented like the leads. Here are actors the compose the supporting ensemble.

Anthony Downing as Raoul
A highly accomplished actor, singer, dancer, pianist and composer. Trained in South Africa and London, award-winning Anthony has performed in musicals, dance productions, film and TV, and performs with a 7-part acappella group.

James Borthwick as Monsieur Firmin
A seasoned actor with many of South Africa’s prestigious theatre, film and TV awards to his credit, the Naledi and Fleur Du Cap Awards for Best Performance in a Musical (2010) for his role as Peron in Evita.

Jason Ralph as Monsieur Andre
Following his first Fleur Du Cap nomination as Most Promising Student while at the University of Cape Town’s Drama Department, Jason has gone on to receive numerous nominations and awards from both the Fleur Du Cap and Naledi Awards during his long career. He won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Rocky Horror Show and toured to China, Taiwan and Jakarta in High School Musical. He makes regular appearances on TV and film in South Africa.

Andrea Creighton as Carlotta
New Zealand-born Andrea has sung principal roles in numerous classic operas for many international opera companies, including Opera National de Paris and New Zealand Opera. Her concert and recital work has taken her around the world, from engagements with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to the Orchestre National de Paris to the UK’s Halle Orchestra. Andrea has won numerous awards and scholarships during her singing career.

Rebecca Spencer as Madam Giry
Her romance with THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA began when she was cast in the role of Carlotta in the German production in Hamburg. Rebecca has performed more than 50 principal roles in operas and musicals across the USA and Canada, and has appeared on television and in film. She has performed as a soloist for numerous American Symphony Orchestras, has performed solo concerts in New York, and has recorded two critically acclaimed albums.

Thabiso Mesemene as Piangi
Recently performed the role of Don Basilio in Opera Africa’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He has also performed as Nemorino in L’Eisir d’Amore, Ernesto in Don Pasquale and Beppein in Pagliaci, Thabiso is part of a successful group called the Gaabo-motho Tenors with whom he has performed internationally.

Cat Lane as Meg Giry
Cat has performed in numerous musicals in London’s West End and internationally, including Grease, Cats, Footloose, Beauty and the Beast and Saturday Night Fever. She has also performed in Spirit of the Dance on its US tour, and in pantomimes such as Cinderella.

Dondi Ong as Piangi
Last but not the least, we are proud to announce that there will be a Pinoy representative on the cast. Alternating with Thabiso Mesemene as Piangi, is our very own Dondi Ong. Filipino tenor Dondi has trained at the UP College of Music gaining a degree in Music, majoring in Voice. He graduated as Magna Cum Laude and the class valedictorian. He has played lead and prominent roles in various Filipino plays, zarzuelas and musicals and has travelled to the US, Europe and Japan to perform for foreign audiences. As a stage performer Dondi had played prominent roles in: Lucio San Pedro’s “Bayan Isang Paa na Lamang”, Boni Ilagan’s “Pagsambang Bayan”, Lucrecia Kasilag’s “Why Flowers Bloom in May”, Roldan/Asencio’s “Song of Joseph”, Floy Quintos’ “Isang Panaginip na Fili” and Puccini’s “La Boheme” among others. He is very excited to comeback in Manila and once again perform in front of his fellow Filipinos.

This is just the main cast who are actually playing most of the notable characters from the show. But the whole ensemble definitely is composed by a lot of actors and performers that will make every scenes alive and majestic.

PETA Opens 45th Theater Season with Lino Brocka's "BONA"

This coming Friday, PETA is opening their 45th Theater season with a very special play that will serve as a retrospect to classic and legendary film masterpiece that captivates the heart of Filipino movie patrons since 1980. As an opening, they are staging the live adaptation of the Lino Brocka classic, "Bona" top-billed by the Superstar Nora Aunor and Philip Salvador.

But of course this new version of Bona will be different to the original. Just like what Direk Soxie Topacio said, they need to update it and tailor made it for the new generation. So instead of a young school girl, Bona is now a call center agent to be played by the box office comedy star Eugene Domingo and Gardo becomes Gino, a talent search contestant played by Edgar Allan Guzman.

Other than the updated backdrop and story, long time fans of the original should not worry because the main idea of the original film is of course preserved and left intact. It is still about a woman's blind obsession that pushes her limits as a fan and how she turns her back on almost everything that she have just for the man he worship. Ms. Layeta Bucoy (Playwright) promised that this new version is even more intense compared to the original but clarifies that overthrowing the original is not the main goal. Their main objective is to create and offer something new to both new and veteran audiences while commemorating Direk Lino Brocka's undying Legacy. One big noticeable change between the original and the new Bona is the obvious humorous treatment of the material. But despite that they still managed to stay true to the emotional aspect of the characters by bringing intense social and psychological rollercoaster scenes that audience will surely enjoy.

From New York to Manila: Meet the Cast of Potted Potter Manila

Recently I already shared about this interesting show called Potted Potter which is an unauthorized musical comedy summarizing all the Harry Potter Books in just 1 show. Reports says that the show is currently a big hit and all shows are sold out. Well that is actually what I'm expecting considering the number of Harry potter fans out there. But enough about the show because I know you already know that. This time, I will be introducing to everyone two of the most amazing international performers who will be performing on this exciting extravaganza. So without further ado, here are Jesse Briton and Gary Trainor.

Jesse Briton is an actor, writer, and a director. He has been trained under East 15 Acting School in UK in which he earned a nomination as Best Actor in Spotlight Prize 2012 even just during his training. His experiences in acting include his participation in the stage adaptation of Mr Benn and the one-man show, Bassonists Against the Cuts. As a writer, he had great success for Bound, a sea-bleached tragedy of maritime decline told with traditional sea shanties, which gathered numerous awards in Edinburgh Fringe and earned him a nomination as the Evening Standard Most Promising Playwright. As a director, he handled Bound and Enduring Song for Bear Trap Theater Company in which he is the company’s artistic director.

Joining Jesse is Gary Trainor, an Irish actor whom had trainings at The Italia Conti Academy where he gained a first class BA (Hons) Degree in acting. Part of his acting experience is in the critically acclaimed UK tour of Frankenstein as the lead actor, Shelly. He was also seen in Buddy, The Buddy Holly Story, The Shawshank Redemption, Stones in His Pockets, Into The Woods, and Jago. To top it off, he was recently chosen to take part in The Old Vic New Voices, which is a 24-hour play project.

Wow. With this credentials and list of works, it is no doubt that Jesse and Gary will be giving Manial audience one hell of a show. With actors having this caliber, I can't imagine how epic and fun this play will become. I'm really more excited now to see it. Repertory Philippines reveals Wizard of Oz Promotional Photos

At last the wait is over as Repertory Philippines shares to the public the first look on the characters of their upcoming musical, the Wizard of Oz. See the exciting and creative compositions of characters like Dorothy, The Tinman, The Lion, Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West. See them after the jump.

“THE WIZARD OF OZ” is an enchanting adaptation of the all time classic, with its wonderful music by Jeanne Bargy and Jim Eiler and book and lyrics by Jim Eiler. After a tornado whisks away a young Kansas farm girl, Dorothy, to the magical land of Oz, she starts her quest to find the mighty Wizard of Oz who has the power to send her back home. Along the way she meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion who help her on her journey.

Repertory Philippines picks their best actors to fill the roles of the show that includes Carra Barredo and Giannina Ocampo as Dorothy Gale; Liesl Batucan and Kyla Rivera as Glinda, Pinky Marquez and Rem Zamora as the Wicked Witch of the West; James Stacey and Arnel Carrion as the Scarecrow; Hans Eckstein and Nic Campos as the Tin Man; Oliver Usison and Mano Domingo as the Lion; Nathalie Everett and Ayam Barredo Eckstein as Aunt Em; Rem Zamora and Chino Veguillas as Uncle Henry; Bobby Superales, Jim Ferrer, Deo dela Cruz and Clark dela Riva as the acrobats and Monkeys.

Looking Back on Forgotten Memories: 13 the Musical

Do you still remember everything about your past experience? Of course we don't really forget faces, important experiences and monumental events that occurred in our lives. But some of us tend to forget details specially if those experiences are not so good. And I'm one of those people. I can hardly remember my teen years. Maybe because those are the times that people actually bullied me and considered to be on the bottom of the food chain so they speak. But years past I regret forgetting those memories because going with my life without them is an empty journey. Thank God, 13 the Musical came to remind me.

13: The Musical brings back all the wonderful (and horrific) memories of adolescence through a story that will strike a chord with anyone aged 13 and up. The scenes are familiar – featuring first kisses, blackmail, bullying, courtship, and many other moments of being 13 years old – but shown under a sweeter, more poignant, and more mature light than your average coming-of-age teenage story. Presented by Ateneo Blue Repertory, with a young cast who still remembers how the world looked in the eyes of a 13 year old, 13: The Musical is a nostalgic musical journey down the road of growing up.

It may sound like another High School Musical or Glee but the big difference is 13 the Musical's narrative focuses on the character's struggle on their everyday life. They are not singers, actors or glee club members. They are just like you, a regular Jock, Geek, or even that horrible bitch or jerk that you hate. With characters presented in their most genuine characterization, expect that you will definitely see yourself on these roles and let you reflect on your own past experiences as a teenager.

Of course it also helps that Ateneo Blue Rep's talents are doing a good job on portraying their respective roles. They always amaze me. RJ Santillan (Evan) is a natural and he plays his role with great precision and with full confidence. Bernice Reyes (Patrice) is an absolute charmer. Though I believe her character lacks character development, she still get's my attention not just because she is beautiful but she did take her role seriously and she connected to me specially on that final song.

Another actor that caught my attention is somebody called Eddie. I'm very sure that you will definitely notice this actor because of the cool dreadlocks. But other than that, this actor exhibits enthusiasm and energy ever since the minute this actor steps on the stage. You may think that hey, that is not so special. Well wait till you find out that this Eddie is not your average actor. Eddie is actually a she. I'm so impressed because it is rare to find cross dressing female that plays male characters that can actually play it without giving any hint that they are female actors. In my experience, even some veteran actors can't pull it perfectly. Nikki Surtida nails the part flawlessly and that makes her my absolute favorite in the cast.

I've already said this before and I will say it again, Ateneo Blue Rep is definitely one of the best maker of great talents in local theater scene. Thanks Ateneo Blue Rep for making me realize that experiences are still worth remembering. No matter how bad they are. Good job, Direk Toff de Venecia. I wish you will continue directing more productions in the future.

Name that Tune: 9 Works Theatrical Teases 2013 Show.

Last Sunday, 9 Works Theatrical posted a teaser image in their facebook page which is suppose to be a hint to the show they are staging next year. At first I'm really confused about what it is. I got the tune but I don't know what musical it is. But of course thanks to Internet I figured it out. Here's the teaser.

For now there is no specific date mentioned but my best guess is they will stage it in February in time for Valentines season. Either way, I'm excited because I haven't seen this show before so here's another new for me.

Phantom of the Opera Live in CCP: August 25 - September 30

One of the best Musical we all loved is finally coming to Manila to give Filipinos a one of a kind experience of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber Extravaganza. Phantom of the Opera now comes in the country for more than a month of shows that will give most of us who haven't seen it live a taste of an authentic live performance of the well loved musical.

Known as the longest running musical both on West End and Broadway and recorded to be seen by approximately 130 million people worldwide. Thanks to Lunchbox Theatrical Production, we will be seeing the official touring cast for the first time on our local theaters. With almost 130 cast, crew and orchestra members and of course an excellent material, Phantom of the Opera is no doubt a show worth looking forward to.

If you think you're a big Phantom of the Opera fan then you should not miss this because this might be the only chance you can see it on the flesh.
