Forbidden Broadway Enters 2nd Week

It is Upstart Production's Forbidden Broadway's 2nd week and it is still receiving excellent reviews and raves from people who already watched the show. I know there are still people who are reluctant on giving this show a chance but I will assure everyone that this is the show that you will definitely enjoy watching regardless if you are a Broadway junkie or just somebody who's looking for a good time.

Hilarious and insanely entertaining. This show is definitely a good value for your time and money. No need to go outside the country and spend money on airline companies who only cares about stupid company policies. In just one ticket, you can enjoy at least 10 Broadway shows and meet at least 80 characters played by the magnificent company of Liesl Batucan (Next Fall), Caisa Borromeo (Rivalry), Lorenz Martinez (You're a Good Man Charlie Brown) and OJ Mariano (Rivalry).

Atlantis Productions Releases Full Cast Poster for Nine the Musical Manila

Straight from Atlantis Productions' facebook page is the latest promotional poster for the upcoming local staging of the Tony Award winning musical Nine. See the whole cast as they strike a pose with the main man Jett Pangan (Jekyll and Hyde) who's playing the show's main protagonist Guido Contini. See the poster after the jump.

Philippine Opera Company's "Ang Bagong Harana" Returns on June 6

Due to insistent public demand, Philippine Opera Company’s “ANG BAGONG HARANA” returns on stage on June 6-10 in time for the Philippine Independence Day Celebration.

Last year, in the midst of so many foreign pop acts and imported musicals, one small theatrical effort made waves. It was a revue featuring traditional and contemporary Filipino songs, sung not by the established legends of Classical singing, but by a troupe of ten young, relatively unknown, but dedicated classical singers. The show was the Philippine Opera Company's “Ang Bagong Harana". And it was a show that had the audience who came to see it for four nights at the RCBC Theater, weeping and applauding with joy.

What was the secret of this small revue's success? "Ang Bagong Harana was envisioned as love song to our country," says Karla Gutierrez, who heads the Philippine Opera Company." We wanted to show audiences that there is so much wealth that modern Filipinos can mine from our traditional and contemporary music. In this age of Globalization, it is all the more crucial for us to know who we are and what we have that we can call Pinoy. A lot of performers may say that we are the best in the world. But we wanted to go a step further and prove it by using our own traditional and contemporary material. And we wanted to showcase young singers who have committed themselves to classical singing and to our traditional material."

The company of ten singers is made up of theater actors and singers Karla Gutierrez, Aizel Prietos, Charley Magalit, Janine Santos, Marian Santiago, Lawrence Jatayna, Jack Salud, Nazer Salcedo, Marvin Gayramon and Al Gatmaitan with the special participation of the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group. Most have appeared in plays and musicals. None of them are what you would call "mainstream". And that is precisely what makes their performances all the more poignant and powerful.

The show, as conceived by Floy Quintos, begins with an evocation of a lost innocence, as expressed through traditional children's songs sung by the company. From there, the love song to country moves through various evocations---a kundiman suite, framed against the backdrop of revolution, a tribal suite based on the indigenous respect for the environment, a suite of folk songs framed against the backdrop of a fiesta, a tribute to Sylvia La Torre that reconnects with our bodabil roots. But more than just mining the past, "Ang Bagong Harana" moves swiftly into the present, using OPM classics like Fredddie Aguilar's "Anak" to make pointed social commentary.

"We kept getting inquiries about a repeat run" says Karla, "which is why we are bringing back the show in it's original form, with most of the original cast. It is a difficult effort to try and do something truly Filipino nowadays. But after the warm response that we got last year, we know that there is an audience that is hungry for this kind of entertainment that reconnects us to our souls. In this age of globalization, it's the one thing we cannot face the future without."

Upstart Productions' Forbidden Broadway Opens May 11

After the successful run of Breakups and Breakdowns last year and the big partnership with Rivalry the Musical a few months ago, Upstart Productions returns to the stage alive and kicking with another serving of musical goodness.

Written and conceived by Gerard Allesandrini, the off-broadway hit Forbidden Broadway is a musical revue that pokes fun to classical, contemporary and current Broadway hits (Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Wicked, Rent et al.) and popular musical personalities (Julie Andrews, Kristin Chenoweth, Elton John, et al.). Just think about the Scary Movie franchise but with jazz hands. The show premiered off-broadway on January 15, 1982 and has been playing for three decades making raves all over America. Of course through time, the show is constantly updated with new shows being parodied and spoofed. So far, Forbidden Broadway has a total of 18 versions and 11 smash hit recordings.

Believing in Filipinos' natural sense of humor, Joel Trinidad (Upstart's Artistic Director) decides to adapt Forbidden Broadway in Manila. And who are better to play the roles but actors who are already known for their versatility and uncanny comedic timing.

Catch Caredivas Makati Invasion for the Last Time

Oh I really thought this show will be having 2 weeks run but I guess I'm too preoccupied to notice the show dates. It appears that it only have 5 limited performances this weekend and tomorrow they will be closing after 2 shows.

“Care Divas” is a disarmingly funny and candid musical drama about five transgender Overseas Filipino Workers in Israel who work as care givers in the morning and transform into glamorous drag queen performers come night fall. While desperate to make ends meet in another country, they also struggle to search for freedom and acceptance in a foreign land.

The play’s theatrical and wickedly funny text, written by award-winning playwright, Liza Magtoto cradles lovely, gentle moments that mull over the lives of the main characters: the kind and loving Chelsea, the often-sarcastic group leader Shai, the ditsy Thalia, the bubbly Kayla and the ill-tempered Jonee.

Returning for to reprise their roles are Melvin Lee, Vincent De Jesus, Phil Noble, Buddy Caramat, Dudz Teraña, Jason Barcial and Eric dela Cruz, Paul Holme, Ricci Chan, Jerald Napoles, Myke Salomon, Angeli Bayani together, Miguel Hidalgo and Dominic Miclat-Janssen. I already saw this show a couple of months ago and I really had a great time watching it. God of Carnage is a play by written by Yasmina Reza that tells the story of two pairs of parents who meet to discuss disputes between their children in a civilized manner. However, as the play goes on, the parents starts exhibiting childish behavior, resulting to a total chaos.

Starring Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo (Next to Normal) as Anette, Lea Salonga (Allegiance) as Veronica, Arthur Acuña (The Kitchen Musical) as Alan and Adrian Pang (The Full Monty) as Michael. Resorts World Manila Reveals Next Musical After The Sound of Music

From the geniuses behind Oklahoma!, Cinderella the Musical, and the Sound of Music comes another classic musical about heritage, culture, and Love. Ladies and gentlemen may I present to you, for Resorts World Manila's next musical offering: Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I.

The King and I is a musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical play is based on the 1944 novel titled "Anna and the King of Siam" written by Margaret Landon which is based from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who became governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The story deals with the exploits of a English teacher hired as part of the King's plan to modernize his nation but also end up falling in Love with the royalty. The King and I became an instant hit in Broadway eventually winning Best Musical, Best Actress and Best Featured Actor. Since then The King and I become one of the most well loved Musical not only on Broadway but in the whole world.

Starring Leo Valdez as the King of Siam and Miss Saigon sensation Monique Wilson as Anna Leonowens. The two will be joining forces as the show hits Manila in September. I think I only saw this show once and I can't even remember when. So I'm happy that Resorts World is doing it on September 15, 2012 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater. This is definitely the moment that you should be worried about seeing Repertory Philippines' Jekyll and Hyde the Musical. Because it has come to its final shows and it is finally closing today April 22 with 2 shows at 3:30pm and 8:00pm.

I'm definitely marking this so far as the best Rep show of the year (successor to the 39 Steps of last year). Though I think the show could be given more justice as a straight play, The Music gave a different experience on telling this classic literary masterpiece. But what I'm very happy with this staging is Director Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo's execution that brings this supernatural tale to a psychological deconstruction of human condition and macabre horror. I had so much fun watching this musical and I highly recommend that you don't miss these final shows.

Atlantis Productions Announced Aladdin the Musical Leads

Last time, I announced here that Atlantis Productions postponed Shrek the Musical to give way for Disney's Aladdin: The New Stage Musical. Today, the theater company that gave us the hit stage musicals such as Avenue Q, Xanadu, In the Heights and Next to Normal announced the actors playing the lead parts of the show and they are featured on the very first promotional poster of the show. Playing Princess Jasmine is recording artist K-La Rivera who we all first seen on stage as Nina in Atlantis Production's In the Heights. Joining her is Tom Rodriguez on his first professional theater gig playing the title role, Aladdin. Personally I'm loving how she looks on that costume and I believe her voice also fits the role. Physically speaking Tom Rodriguez fits the description of Aladdin. I've only seen him in one movie and I haven't heard him sing. So for now I can't comment if he is indeed rightful for the role. I hope he is really good given that he will be carrying the whole show.

UPDATE: Just saw this on youtube. Probably Kapamilya fans already heard Tom sing. Since I seldom watch local variety shows this past few months, I don't really have the chance to catch any of his performances. Thanks to youtube here's an amateur video taken on a certain live show. Hmmm looks like the guy can really sing. What do you think?

The force on this poster is too strong to handle. I can't imagine what will be he atmosphere when they finally grace the stage together. This just makes me more excited. Nuff said.

Ateneo BlueRepertory Ends 20th Season with Bare

Got the chance to see Ateneo Blue Repertory's closing show for its 20th season a week ago. Haven't written anything about it because to be honest I don't know what should I say and feel about it. It is my first time to see the show and contrary to the hype of most of my friends, I'm quite having mixed emotions about it. So to be completely sure, I took my time to think over before I drop my final verdict. So here it is.

Bare is the 4th production of BlueRep that I watched since 2005. Though I haven't experienced a lot of BlueRep show, I'm convinced that this collegiate theater company got what it takes to create a show worth watching. The fact that most alumni of this organization are now making names on professional theater scene both here and abroad makes me less surprised when the company wowed the audience that night with a breathtaking performance and intoxicating adrenaline. I'm a very emotional audience. And I really like being touched on shows that I watched and Bare definitely pulled something inside me. The main strength of BlueRep's rendition of Bare is the good marriage of excellent performance and a carefully selected material that is both timely and thought provoking.

Now where do the negatives fall? I mentioned that in general I love the overall company performance. But some actors still fall short on portraying their respective roles. When I saw the show last week, I'm quite confused of Jason's character (Jaime Barcelon). He is closeted gay but he acts too soft for a guy. I don't know if it is intentional but if you are hiding your true sexuality, you must at least not act like one right? I just feel that the execution is a bit confusing and needs a lot of reworking. His leading men (played by Bibo Reyes) on the other hand gave a better performance and a much more believable portrayal of his role--Peter.

Nadia (Cassie Manalastas) for me is the most interesting character because of the fact that I can relate to her and she definitely connected to me. But unfortunately I also felt that she didn't gave everything for that part. She is supposed to be a sharp tongued fat girl with an attitude inversely proportional to her self-esteem. The energy from her performance is too restricted where she should be not afraid of losing herself. The resident bitch, Ivy played by Marrone Cruz on the other hand who serve as Nadia's direct antithesis perfectly delivered what the script is saying about her. She is definitely comfortable with the character and not afraid to lose herself to it. She perfectly justifies both of her wild facade and fragile side making her the best young performer of that night.

Bare is once again one of those musical theater title that I will put on my list of shows with music that didn't really appeal to me like Spring Awakening and Next to Normal. For me, the plot wins my attention over the music. In fact, I'm willing to see the same material as a straight play rather than a musical. It also didn't help that Teatrino's acoustic is not that good. I believe that the venue is only designed for not higher than 10 performers singing in unison. The cast is composed of 20 performers and when they started singing all together, the sound becomes unbearable. The only time I can enjoy the music is during solos and duets. But when group numbers are performed, everything goes down hill.

Despite all the technicalities I observed, I still believe that Bare is absolutely an enlightening show that everyone should not fail to witness. It tackles the sensitive issue of Homosexuality among Christian youth and their struggles to fit into society and look for acceptance and true Love. The material is heavy and I applaud BlueRep for bravely staging such exquisite and honest musical and be able to execute it right and deliver the message to both theater fans and non-theater fans alike.

Everybody has a Dark Side: Jekyll and Hyde the Musical Soon in Manila

I know the story of Jekyll and Hyde like how I know who's the current President of our country. I know the story as a common knowledge through encyclopedias I've read (yes that time Wikipedia does not exist yet). I admit it that I never had the chance to experience this masterpiece by Robert Stevenson. Maybe I'm just one of those who are unlucky to be on a School who doesn't teach English Literature that is why I'm not introduced to these characters which are indeed very famous specially to those who likes Victorian novels.

My first encounter with the piece is in college, on a Literature class. I also got interested with it after seeing the movie adaptation of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen where Dr. Jekyll's condition is exaggerated showing him transforming to a hulk like creature when switching to Mr. Hyde. But during those time I'm already preoccupied. Sherlock Holmes won my attention and since then I never looked back. Not until before the end of 2011 when Repertory Philippines announces their 2012 offerings and one of them sounds very familiar.

Repertory Philippines proudly presents its much-awaited musical offering for 2012 with JEKYLL & HYDE -- a tale of love, redemption and the seductive power of evil adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella, with music by Frank Wildhorn and book and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse.

JEKYLL & HYDE is set against the backdrop of Victorian London, with the respectable Dr. Jekyll who has begun to display alarmingly erratic behavior. From the gentle, humane Dr. Jekyll, his evil side emerges in the persona of Mr. Hyde when he drinks a secret potion. The plot further becomes complex when a brutal figure haunts the city's streets, committing assault and murder under the cloak of darkness and dismal London fog.

Who would have thought that this psychological thriller is also a musical. Well I already seen one (Sweeney Todd) and heard of another (Carrie) but I really didn't know that Jekyll and Hyde is also adapted into a Broadway and West End Musical play. But either way, what's important is I can now experience this masterpiece on a medium that I enjoy a lot not to mention to be played by actors I idolize in the Philippine theater community.

I already saw the show and I really love it so much. I know I already mentioned this to some people that other than the obvious fact that you will laugh out loud over the jokes and funny stuff that the show have, in a weird way you will still find yourself deeply touched by it. As weird as it may sound but it is true, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown can also make you cry but of course it depends on how you interpret the show. For me, I have my reasons why I cried but I'll just keep that on wraps for now until my official review is published soon. For now, take my word. Watch it and have fun.

Yes, this is the very first time Aladdin the musical will be gracing our local theaters. It is different from the one act musical Aladdin Jr. staged several times by Repertory Philippines. This one is a full length musical adapted from Walt Disney's animated film which is first staged in the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle, Washington last July 7, 2011 with Alan Menken directly involved in the production. This show will premiere in the Philippines on November 2012, pushing Shrek the Musical to 2013.

Aladdin and Jasmine (Adam Jacobs and Courtney Reed) singing new duet, "A Million Miles Away" from Disney's Aladdin last July 7- July 31 at the 5th Avenue Theatre.

Hello guys. Just been doing some stuff outside blogging (yes I have life outside blogging) and I'm just about to call it a night and hit the sack when I decided to just post something for everyone. This video is taken during the press conference of 9 Works Theatrical's first offering for this year titled You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. The video features Tonipet Gaba as Schroeder and Sweet Plantado-Tiongson as Sally Brown. They are performing the opening number for the second act titled "My New Philosophy"which shows the character's funny yet profound way of thinking. Watch the video after the jump.

Joining Tonipet and Sweet on stage are Lorenz Martinez (The Wedding Singer) as Snoopy, Franco Laurel (Sweeney Todd) as Linus (Toff De Venecia on some shows), Carla Guevara Laforteza (Rent) as Lucy and 9 Works Theatrical's creative Director Robbie Guevarra (Sweeney Todd/The Sound of Music) now leaving the director's chair and taking in the actor's hat as the title role Charlie Brown. It's been a while since the last time I saw Robbie on stage as an actor. I think the last time is almost years ago on Repertory's Sweeney Todd. He is also on Resorts World's The Sound of Music last year but I saw the show with his alternate. So with You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, I'm excited that I will be witnessing again Robbie's acting prowess.

Cast Reveal: Carla Guevara-Laforteza for Atlantis Productions' NINE

And here's a new update for Atlantis production's NINE. Another fine lady is joining the line-up in the persona of the stage actress extraordinaire, Carla Guevera-Laforteza.

Its been a while for Carla since the last time she played a role on an Atlantis production show. Now she is back on the company's fence now playing the role of Carla Albanese, mistress to Guido Contini who will be played by Jett Pangan.

But before Nine premieres on September 2012, Carla will be unleashing her pester power on 9 Works Theatrical's "You're a Goodman Charlie brown" playing the 8 year old cynical and crabby girl Lucy van Pelt. This lady is unstoppable. That is why I love her. Can't wait to see her intense performance once again on stage. Just a few days left Jori, just a few days left :)

Good News of the Day: Samantha Barks as Eponine in Les Miserables Movie

And that means Taylor Swift is ultimately out of the role. Yes! According to Broadway World, Cameron Mackintosh himself announces the big news at the Manchester Palace after a night of performance of Oliver! where Samantha Barks is currently playing the role of Nancy.

Even Samantha is so surprised with Cameron's announcement but she is definitely more than happy about the news of reprising her role that she played during the Musical's 25th Anniversary Concert. In fact she is too happy that she tweeted this after the show:

Samantha is now joining the ensemble that includes Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean), Anne Hathaway (Fantine), Amanda Seyfried (Cosette), Aaron Tveit (Enjolras), Helena Bonham Carter (Madame Thenardier) and Russell Crowe (Inspecter Javert) to name a few. This is absolutely the best news I will ever hear today. Though it is not a guarantee that Swift is out of the movie and may still appear as another character, I'm just relieved that she is out of the role previously immortalized by the great Frances Ruffelle, Lea Salonga and Sutton Foster.

Les Miserables is set to start filming on March and initially announced to be released on December 2012 (or later outside US and UK) from Universal Pictures to be distributed by United International Pictures Philippines through Solar Entertainment.

The Faith Dilemma: Next Fall Review

Do you believe on something that don't believe in you? How can a gay man be a believer if in return the very words he put his belief in dislikes them. This is the dilemma discussed on Repertory Philippines' first offering of the year, Next Fall.

A masterpiece written by Geoffrey Nauffts, Next Fall tells the story of the five year roller coaster love affair of two gay men, Luke (David Bianco) and Adam (Bart Guingona) in the busy streets of New York City. It is a very wonderful relationship and an almost perfect one if not of Luke's religious conviction and Adam's Atheistic intimidation that leads to constant arguments about Faith and God. The two tries to cope with each other's belief at least to avoid any dispute but everything turns upside down when a tragedy happened that suddenly changes everybody's life.

At first you will see Next Fall as a typical play that discusses Homosexual relationship. The show is witty and not to mention smart. But it is actually more than that. The show may have questioned the unending issue of morality and faith but in the end the show didn't answer anything at all. Instead the show brings up more questions than answers that eventually make people start thinking.

Like the characters on the show, Adam and Luke have their own beliefs. Both character are strong believers that is why they always end up arguing about them. So what did they do to stop the argument? They stopped thinking about it and continue their lives enjoying each other's company. That is how we all live our lives, we stop thinking about our faith to be able to cope with the society that believes on different faiths. But despite the intentional ignorance over these beliefs, the show thought us that we will still come to the point that we will all have to make the choice. Whether it is right or wrong, moral or immoral, it is a choice we need to make when the time comes.

I don't really need to go in the details about the performers because they are all brilliant. Two thumbs up for both the leads (Guingona and Bianco) and supporting casts who naturally portrays life as it is giving us the chance to experience real emotions. Next Fall is definitely a must watch for people who wants to think and question life.

More Than just A Game: Rivalry (Ateneo - Lasalle) The Musical

Ever wondered where and when does Ateneo and La Salle's grudge to one another started? Off course to every one who become part of either institutions knows the history but people like us who are outside the fence only knows that they are great rivals on athletics most specifically on NCAA (now UAAP). But behind that is a much deeper story and it will be revealed on The 4th Wall Theater Company's staging of the original Musical: Rivalry.

Started as a Toyota vs. Crispa Musical concept by Champoy legend Noel Trinidad 30 years ago, he presented the concept to his friend Ed Gatchalian who is a celebrated musical genius. But due to them being so occupied by work and not to mention the lack of time and resources, the idea didn't materialize. Not until a year ago.

“Last year, some three decades later, when I started writing original music with Jaime del Mundo on '100: A Musical Journey in C Major' for the Insular Life Centennial celebration, it rekindled my desire to pursue Noel’s idea. This time, however, instead of Crispa and Toyota, I decided to zero in on the two arch rivals Ateneo and La Salle,” Gatchalian said. And there that moment Rivalry is born.

At first, many thinks only alumni of both school's could be the sole market of the show. But Gatchalian strongly believes that it will definitely attract more people regardless what school they are from because of the universality of concept not to mention the outsider's growing curiosity over the intriguing fact why are these schools still arch rivals after all of these years.

Gatchalian also gave us an assurance that what we are about to see in the show are completely accurate and based on real facts. To be sure of that, he consulted friends from the other side (La Salle, gatchalian is from Ateneo) regarding things that an Atenista will never know. “The story has been in my mind for years because I lived those days. So I had a lot of nice memories and I just kept on putting them together. But when I decided to really be serious about this, the first thing I did was I consulted three friends from La Salle --Juan Miguel Llamas, Tony Cervantes and Jimmy Morelos. Based on their input, I did dummy lyrics. Then I started on the music,” he recounted.

Then as the show takes shape, Gatchalian then seek the help of friend Jaime Del Mundo to write the final book and Joel Trinidad to write the music's Lyrics. It is a Powerhouse team that rarely join forces and it did on this one of a kind original musical that we will about to witness tomorrow.
