A Case Against Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) Cameras

Many times we go and meet potential customers. They have an idea of what they want and they are clear in letting us know what they are thinking. We love this since it gives us an idea of where they want to go. The customers vision of the system is key to the success of any installation we do. But many times we go in and they tell us, what they want, where they want it and they want nothing else but what they are asking. We run into this quite often.

Most of the time, their perception of what they want was shaped by another security company. There is phenomenal sales man out there representing many great companies that sell you a system and convince you that there is nothing better. This gets stored into the mind of potential customers and instead of us coming in and helping them have the best solution, we end up fighting them and letting them know that, Yes, that is a great solution but it is a technology that is 10 years old…..

Changing the customers mind can be sometimes very difficult and in some occasions they have set their minds on something and wont give you the bid because of it. We see this when it comes to customers who are sold the idea that they need PTZ (pan Tilt Zoom) cameras. They learn that the camera can be manned with a joystick, and you can move it 360 degree and up and down and they are sold on the fact that they can get this camera and cover a huge area with a single camera. All that sounds good but is it practical?

I want to make a case against PTZ.

For many years, I was a promoter of PTZ cameras but learned quickly the many disadvantages of using PTZ cameras.

Here is a list of many of the frustrations of owning PTZ cameras:

1) You cannot cover a wide area with a PTZ camera. Let me explain, Yes, you can have a PTZ camera do a 60 second tour of a parking lot as an example. But are you really covering the parking lot? I see this all the time, I get a call from a customer and they say that a car got vandalized in their parking lot. Well, it just happens that the person who keyed the car and threw the brick through the window and all this happened while the camera was viewing the other side of the parking lot. Even if you get to see part of the video, remember it is on a tour so you will have about 5 seconds out of the 60 to see something. Is that practical?

2) PTZ are composed of mechanical equipment. Just like a car, when you have PTZ’s touring or moving constantly, they are going to require a lot of maintenance. We see PTZ that loose their programed courses because belts get loose. Also, we replace more PTZ cameras than any other camera because they just don’t last.

3) PTZ where designed to be manned. Many folks go into this camera thinking that they can zoom in to a license plate and get the numbers or maybe see who is going to dump something on the dumpster of his apartment complex or place of business. But lets think about this, 99% of the system installed to date don’t have a security guard viewing the cameras. And owners will see the camera constantly for about 2 months and after that it is forgotten until something actually happens. If you are the 99% of the folks who want to leave the system alone and do its course then how can you get that license plate or the stranger that keep dumping into your trash. And lets say you ask the PTZ to do a tour, well, if you don’t monitor it and the power went down, most cameras stop the tour when power is restored which leaves you with a camera viewing to the wrong area.

4) Well, I think you get the point.

Ok… so what are my options… I mean… I don’t want to have 100 cameras just to watch the parking lot….

We are glad you asked:

We have a great line of High Definition cameras that are able to capture from 360 degree to 180 degrees to 10 degrees and still give you the detail you need to zoom into an object get the information you need without sacrificing the remaining of the picture.

What I am trying to say is that our system can give you what a PTZ can plus much more and you will never loose any video.

For example, one of our most popular cameras for parking lots is our Panoramic 180 degree camera. This is a single camera with two lenses that enables you to cover from wall to wall, 180 degrees of HD video. Cover an entire parking lot from a single camera. But it gets better, you can digitally zoom into an area of the picture and see the car that got vandalized, see the individual who did it while still recording the entire 180 degree picture.

The pictures below shows you what I mean when it comes to digital zoom. Take close look at the area that the camera is covering. Then see how we can digitally zoom in while still capturing the entire area.

I was honored when approached by a reporter from ABC News Channel 4 who was researching small business robbery and surveillance systems. We set up an appointment to meet with Stefanie Bainum, reporter for ABC News 4, on Sunday the 12th. Stefanie conducted an on camera interview with Jose Noy, as well as collected images of our camera systems for the newscast.

The story came about because of a recent string of robberies on small businesses in the Lowcountry. Stefanie looked to us to answer some of her questions on what small business owners can do to protect themselves against potential threats, and why they are being targeted. We offered up plenty of advice for business owners to consider when purchasing a security system. Some crucial points that were discussed include lighting, warning stickers and camera placement.

We are very pleased at how the story came together, and are also very grateful to the ABC News 4 team for reaching out to us for help with this story.

This was one experience that I will never forget. We got the opportunity to sponsor 201 Daytona 500 Winner Jamie McMurray at Richmond International Speedway for the Crown Royal 400 Race.

We where able to visit the garage, met with Jamie, saw the race from Pit Row. This experience, for ever, made me a fan of this sport.

Goodwill Industries contracted ComSurv to deal with a theft problem they have been encountering in the last few months. During the day and evening hours, folks would come and steal donations left in the donations area. Goodwill wanted to view the incident and also wanted to be able to view license plate. They had an existing American Dynamics system that had several PTZ’s and a few fixed cameras but was unable to capture license plates.

ComSurv spent some time with the Goodwill LP staff and designed the perfect system. The system consisted of a single camera that will record to itself and is accessible from their home office without the need of massive bandwidth or high speed connection.

My company ComSurv exhibited for the first time at the Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Show in Myrtle Beach SC last week and was a blown success. With over 100 solid leads and an incredible crowd wanting our new line of High-Definition cameras. Even my competitors wanted my cameras! It was awesome!

In the next few months I will be traveling from as far north as DC to as south as Georgia designing systems, consulting and selling some cameras. Am excited about what is to come this year. Goodwill Industries International, the nation’s leading non-profit workforce organization, is on a very noble mission – inspire hope and self-confidence, and help people from all backgrounds and walks of life to feel successful, valuable and dignified. Through its workforce development services, donation centers and retail stores, Goodwill eliminates those barriers to opportunity so that people in need can reach their fullest potential.

However, down in South Carolina, the local chapter was increasingly running up against a major barrier to opportunity of their own – rampant theft at Goodwill Donation Centers. At the 21 retail stores managed by Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina , after hours thefts at donation centers had begun to take their toll, growing to approximately 30% and costing thousands of dollars per year. In addition, safety concerns and lower morale was becoming evident among the 1,700 member district workforce. Goodwill Industries had an analog video surveillance solution in place, but the cameras were very limited in their capabilities and effectiveness. Brad Kyzer, Loss Prevention Specialist for Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina, sought out a better security camera solution to put a halt to the current trend that was impacting their service so severely.

“With our analog cameras, images were blurry and details were unclear,” said Kyzer. “This lack of clarity prevented us from providing prosecutable evidence to local authorities in many cases. We were becoming a haven for these thieves who were essentially getting away with stealing our donations.”

His criteria was straightforward – the best image quality at the best price, enabling Goodwill Industries to put a real deterrent in place. That’s when ComSurv’s high definition security camera solution first came to Mr. Kyzer’s attention.

Finding the ROI

Jose Noy, staff at security installer Comsurv head quartered in Charleston, S.C., was the one to introduce Mobotix high definition surveillance concept to Kyzer. Noy had worked with Goodwill stores in the past, so he was aware of the unique challenges associated with securing retail stores and donation centers of the nation’s leading non-profit workforce centers. Rather than pushing a complicated, component-heavy surveillance system, Noy knew that Mobotix’s decentralized approach to IP network video security was the perfect fit.

“There was no question that Goodwill needed to move beyond analog surveillance,” said Noy. “However, we wanted Goodwill to avoid the struggle that many users face in harnessing the full capability of their IP video security systems, namely high-resolution imagery. By implementing a decentralized network camera solution, Goodwill would be able to record, analyze and store megapixel video at a fraction of the bandwidth required from competing high-resolution IP video products. At the end of the day, there was no real question that ComSurv had the right solution for Goodwill.”

Noy recommended their High Definition M24 Allround camera as it delivers exceptional image quality for both indoor and outdoor surveillance applications. The weather-resistant camera allows users to zero in on portions of a scene without losing image quality by provides digital pan/tilt/zoom functionality for its field of view. On-camera compression capabilities along with built-in MicroSD slot allow Goodwill and other users to store high-quality video images directly on the device, perfect to conserve network bandwidth and reduce cost. The camera also provides two-way audio support with a built-in microphone and speaker.

Kyzer immediately liked what he was seeing. “The quality and clarity of the megapixel images are amazing, the HD M24 cameras give us the ability to zoom in on details and capture crisp images and video for evidence. The two-way audio allows us to talk live to suspects and give them a warning and stop the theft while it is occurring.”

After an initial two-week trial period at two donation centers, Kyzer and Network Manager David Smith proposed to the Executive Management Team for a full replacement of security cameras at 21 retail store donation sites in the Lower South Carolina district. To date, all stores have been updated. At each location, one HD M24 camera replaced 2-4 analog devices. In addition, the use of the MxPEG video codec has cut the time required to review video in half and significantly reduced the load on Goodwill’s network infrastructure – all factoring in to the superior cost-effectiveness of the ComSurv solution.

Immediate Results

Over the course of the previous year there was a rash of donation thefts at various Goodwill locations throughout the Lower South Carolina district only resulted in six arrests. Within the first few weeks after installing the High Definition cameras across the 10 locations, Goodwill began to notice a sudden slow down in thefts to what Kyzer attributes as “word spreading throughout the criminal community.” Only one month after installing the first cameras there were two theft attempts and Kyzer’s team was able to provide clear, crisp footage from the newly installed HD M24 cameras to local authorities that lead to the immediate arrest of four individuals. Better yet, police were able to recoup more than $1,100 in donations.

Kyzer and the team at Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina soon found themselves at the forefront of security technology during national meetings with Goodwill Industries security division. Peers from across the Goodwill network were stunned by the immediate results as well as the low cost for implementation, making the Lower South Carolina district a model for employing innovative security technology solutions.

“Our public entrusts Goodwill with its charitable contributions to further the mission of Goodwill,” said Robert Smith, Goodwill president & CEO. “In order to be good stewards of the goods the public entrusts Goodwill with, we must make sure that we do everything we can to ensure the goods are being safeguarded and to ensure we support the mission outreach of Goodwill services. To that extent, we must provide our Loss Prevention Staff with the tools necessary to protect the assets entrusted to Goodwill. To that end, Goodwill has chosen the best technology and technology partners to accomplish this goal.”

I got the opportunity to lead a team to assist Live 5 News with a webcam that overlooks the Coastal Carolina Fair in Charleston, SC

Live 5 news have been using our HD cameras for their weather report for quite some time now. With the fair coming to town they asked to use one of our cameras as an overhead shot of the fair to broadcast during the weather report and during the fair report.

Since then, we have had a lot of inquiries of hotels, restaurants and other businesses that want our cameras to view a particular area on which they can embed on their website or to use on commercials or the air waves. Since our cameras provide higher than HD video quality, no matter what format you use, the picture will be crisp, detailed and clear.

High Definition surveillance design for Charleston Southern University in Charleston SC

ComSurv got contracted to install High Definition video surveillance cameras for Charleston Southern University. The school already had an analog system in place which was initially installed by a competitors and. We had to come up with a solution in order to merge both the old system with the new system. We used the geovision platform and a combination of Mobotix, ACTi and Sony cameras to accomplish the merge. At the end, success!

I get this question a lot. Jose, you seem to provide solutions for large companies. Do you have a solution that will work for me?

Take a look at this:

A few weeks ago, we installed a Hemispheric camera in a neighborhood in Charlotte, NC. The neighborhood’s gazebo was being vandalized on a regular basis. The home owners association need a total coverage of the gazebo and hired ComSurv for the job.

In order to be able to capture the area 100% we decided to use our High Definition hemispheric camera. The camera will sit in a vandal proof enclosure to handle extreme vandalism. The camera was also put inside a secure network which can be access wirelessly throughout the neighborhood by the member of the association.

The end result, a very happy and satisfied satisfied customer.

My company ComSurv excibited for the first time at the Hotel, Motel and Restuarant Show in Myrtle Beach SC last week and was a blown success. With over 100 solid leads and an incredible crowd wanting our new line of High Definition cameras. Even my competitors wanted my cameras. It was awesome.

Helping Rehabilitate Neighborhoods

ComSurv is always looking for ways to help the community. We have pledged to give up 10% of our company earnings for local and international outreach programs. We sponsor Charlotte's "What If Everyone" campaign that encourages people to volunteer and provide programs for people to volunteer and help the community. We also sponsor an orphanage school called Royal School in Uganda, Africa (www.royaluganda.com).

Also, I was excited when a friend of mine, Tony Garay, asked me to help him with a new project with his firm NRG (www.nrgbuilds.com). His firms buys bankrupt malls located in questionable neighborhoods. They buy the mall and up-fit them in order to improve the neighborhood or as they call it.... rehabilitate Neighborhoods and provide venues for entrepreneurship, outreach, work, camps, concerts, plus much more. In September 2009 ComSurv installed the first camera system which was partially donated in order to help achieve the vision of Tony's firm, NRG. The installation was a major success and the safety of the mall was increase due to our system. I am excited to see how ComSurv can help NRG reach their goals for 2010.

Ultimately, I am excited to see how ComSurv is going to help the local community and other organization make an impact on this world.

The devastation that is going on in Haiti is sometimes hard to imagine for us that live in such a nation super power. For us water, lighting, trash pickup, etc... are necessities... for Haitians... those are luxuries. I have lived in various 3rd world countries and have experienced first hand what devastations like these can do.

My heart goes to Haiti and I know most of us are in that same boat. I also know that many of us, due to the economical circumstances of this world, cannot give to this cause but I do encourage you, if you cant give, to push for others to give. 3 Mega Pixel vs 1 Mega Pixel vs High Resolution

Lately there has been much debate over the subject of high resolution vs various mega pixel cameras. Some of this debate has to do with the fact that many mega pixel cameras do not give you real time recording. Other say that clogging the network is not worth the quality. I have even heard people taking about how expensive mega pixel is compared to analog. There is truth to much of the arguments but I want to tackle a few arguments:

1) No real time recording: This is known to be true. The higher the definition on the camera, the less amount of frames per second you get. But, is real time really needed. For example, real time DVR are popular not because of the frames per second per se but because the lack of resolution on an analog camera, Let me explain, to get a good shot of a car, individual or what ever happened to be, you needed as many shots of that picture as possible. So if you are able to take a shot of something or someone with a real time DVR, you will be able to capture 30 shots every second of that individual. With a mega pixel camera and lets take the Mobotix 3.0 mega pixel camera, you can get all the detail you need with only one shot. So the need for real time recording is not needed and many customers are more happy to have 5 FPS of a mega pixel camera than 30 FPS of an analog camera.

2) Clogging the network: For most manufacturers of Mega Pixel cameras, this is a known problem when integrating mega pixel camera with an existing network. When you try to transfer between 1 - 5 mega pixels through a network that is running of 512 mb, you bet you are going to clog it specially if you have multiple cameras. Fortunately most networks now days have been upgraded to gigabyte. Even with a gigabyte network, if you have multiple mega pixels camera with a network of about 100 computers... it can clog pretty fast. Many installer just go ahead and install a separate network for the cameras alone and this adds to the cost. But there is the MxPeg technology from Mobotix which allows to use a limited amount of bandwidth when transmitting video through an existing network. They do this by only transmitting the pixels that change from the picture. So there are ways around the clogging issue.

3) High Def is too expensive. This is probably the most used phrase to us who sell mega pixel systems. For some occasion, yes it can be true but for most it is not. Let me explain. One 3.1 Mega Pixel camera, can cover an area that normally 8 analog high resolution cameras would cover. Not only that but it will give you a far more superior picture quality. Also, if you use a camera like the Mobotix Q24, you can cover a convenient store with only one camera in high definition quality for less than $2000 and still be able to capture the whole store in a picture quality 8 times superior than a high resolution camera.Normally , you would have had to use an 8 channel DVR with 8 cameras for such purpose and maybe spend over $2500.
