My company ComSurv excibited for the first time at the Hotel, Motel and Restuarant Show in Myrtle Beach SC last week and was a blown success. With over 100 solid leads and an incredible crowd wanting our new line of High Definition cameras. Even my competitors wanted my cameras. It was awesome.

In teh next few month I will be traveling from as far north as DC to as south as Georgia designing system, consulting and selling some cameras. Am excited about what is to come this year. Keep an eye for us on the next expo but for now you can check us out at the South east Petro Expo this March 5-6th also at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

I want to thank Antonio (Tono) Sierra and Reinaldo Tineo from the Orlando ComSurv office for coming up and assisting us with showcasing our new line of High Definition Cameras.

Helping Rehabilitate Neighborhoods

ComSurv is always looking for ways to help the community. We have pledged to give up 10% of our company earnings for local and international outreach programs. We sponsor Charlotte's "What If Everyone" campaign that encourages people to volunteer and provide programs for people to volunteer and help the community. We also sponsor an orphanage school called Royal School in Uganda, Africa (www.royaluganda.com).

Also, I was excited when a friend of mine, Tony Garay, asked me to help him with a new project with his firm NRG (www.nrgbuilds.com). His firms buys bankrupt malls located in questionable neighborhoods. They buy the mall and up-fit them in order to improve the neighborhood or as they call it.... rehabilitate Neighborhoods and provide venues for entrepreneurship, outreach, work, camps, concerts, plus much more. In September 2009 ComSurv installed the first camera system which was partially donated in order to help achieve the vision of Tony's firm, NRG. The installation was a major success and the safety of the mall was increase due to our system. I am excited to see how ComSurv can help NRG reach their goals for 2010.

Ultimately, I am excited to see how ComSurv is going to help the local community and other organization make an impact on this world.

The devastation that is going on in Haiti is sometimes hard to imagine for us that live in such a nation super power. For us water, lighting, trash pickup, etc... are necessities... for Haitians... those are luxuries. I have lived in various 3rd world countries and have experienced first hand what devastations like these can do.

My heart goes to Haiti and I know most of us are in that same boat. I also know that many of us, due to the economical circumstances of this world, cannot give to this cause but I do encourage you, if you cant give, to push for others to give. 3 Mega Pixel vs 1 Mega Pixel vs High Resolution

Lately there has been much debate over the subject of high resolution vs various mega pixel cameras. Some of this debate has to do with the fact that many mega pixel cameras do not give you real time recording. Other say that clogging the network is not worth the quality. I have even heard people taking about how expensive mega pixel is compared to analog. There is truth to much of the arguments but I want to tackle a few arguments:

1) No real time recording: This is known to be true. The higher the definition on the camera, the less amount of frames per second you get. But, is real time really needed. For example, real time DVR are popular not because of the frames per second per se but because the lack of resolution on an analog camera, Let me explain, to get a good shot of a car, individual or what ever happened to be, you needed as many shots of that picture as possible. So if you are able to take a shot of something or someone with a real time DVR, you will be able to capture 30 shots every second of that individual. With a mega pixel camera and lets take the Mobotix 3.0 mega pixel camera, you can get all the detail you need with only one shot. So the need for real time recording is not needed and many customers are more happy to have 5 FPS of a mega pixel camera than 30 FPS of an analog camera.

2) Clogging the network: For most manufacturers of Mega Pixel cameras, this is a known problem when integrating mega pixel camera with an existing network. When you try to transfer between 1 - 5 mega pixels through a network that is running of 512 mb, you bet you are going to clog it specially if you have multiple cameras. Fortunately most networks now days have been upgraded to gigabyte. Even with a gigabyte network, if you have multiple mega pixels camera with a network of about 100 computers... it can clog pretty fast. Many installer just go ahead and install a separate network for the cameras alone and this adds to the cost. But there is the MxPeg technology from Mobotix which allows to use a limited amount of bandwidth when transmitting video through an existing network. They do this by only transmitting the pixels that change from the picture. So there are ways around the clogging issue.

3) High Def is too expensive. This is probably the most used phrase to us who sell mega pixel systems. For some occasion, yes it can be true but for most it is not. Let me explain. One 3.1 Mega Pixel camera, can cover an area that normally 8 analog high resolution cameras would cover. Not only that but it will give you a far more superior picture quality. Also, if you use a camera like the Mobotix Q24, you can cover a convenient store with only one camera in high definition quality for less than $2000 and still be able to capture the whole store in a picture quality 8 times superior than a high resolution camera.Normally , you would have had to use an 8 channel DVR with 8 cameras for such purpose and maybe spend over $2500.

The new GV-iView iPhone app is a great tool for business owners that want to keep an eye on their investments or for home owners that want to keep an eye on their properties. This software gives you the option of viewing video live or reviewing video already recorded. You can have your POS transaction at your fingertips. Take snap shots and much more. It even has PTZ controls for those who have PTZ cameras. It still needs some improvement but it is one of the best iPhone apps available to date.

4. Power and Bandwidth - Distance Performance

Mx2wire always starts as a class 0 device and powers PoE devices up to 7 Watt (Class2). This is the max. power available of PoE devices. Top 10 Tips For Home Fire Safety

When a home fire occurs, heat and smoke build and spread quickly and silently, leaving families with as few as three minutes to escape. Fire safety and survival begin with preparation. Yet, according to a recent national survey from the nonprofit Home Safety Council (HSC), only 37 percent of respondents have taken any actions at home to prevent fires.
HSC is partnering with the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) to educate families that the best way to protect against a home fire is to have three things: working smoke alarms on each level of the home to warn of a fire, even late at night; a fire escape plan that the whole family has practiced; and an installed home fire sprinkler system to control a fire.
Most families know about the importance of smoke alarms and fire drills, but very few are familiar with home fire sprinklers. In fact, the Home Safety Council’s recent survey revealed that only eight percent of adults in major cities across America live in homes protected by fire sprinklers and 41 percent of those surveyed didn’t know that fire sprinklers were a safety option for their homes.
“It’s definitely a concern that so many families are living without home fire sprinklers. They offer the ultimate fire protection and that can save lives,” said Meri-K Appy, Home Safety Council president. “Fire sprinklers are available for homes, but too often people don’t know to ask for them when they build or move. Many people believe the common myths about fire sprinklers, which may prevent them from wanting to install the system.”
To show home fire sprinklers in action, and help dispel common sprinkler myths, HSC and NFSA have developed online animations that simplify and demonstrate how the technology works. The “Living Room” of MySafeHome.org — the Home Safety Council’s free, virtual home safety tour — features animations comparing a fire burning in a home protected by sprinklers with one that is not. The interactive feature illustrates how quickly a fire grows out of control in the room without fire sprinklers, filling it with deadly smoke. In the home with fire sprinklers, the fire remains small and contained.
Home fire sprinkler systems are installed behind the walls like plumbing. Sprinklers are connected to a constant water supply, so they are always ready to extinguish fires. Only the heat of a fire will cause the sprinkler to flow — not smoke.
If a fire starts, the sprinkler closest to it quickly controls the fire, keeping it small until the fire department arrives. That quick response controls heat and deadly smoke. With a fire under control and confined to just the area of the room where it started, families have more time to get outside to safety — and survival.
“Smoke alarms are essential to alert people to a fire, especially when they’re asleep and most vulnerable,” Appy said. “But only sprinklers work automatically to control and even put out a fire when it’s small. They’re the very best protection a family can have against the tragedy of a home fire.”
If you are considering buying a home or moving to a new building, choose one with a fire sprinkler system, if possible. When building a new home or doing a major remodel of an existing home, consider having a home fire sprinkler system installed. Contact your local fire department for help finding a qualified home fire sprinkler installer.
Even with fire sprinklers, every family needs working smoke alarms and a well-rehearsed fire escape plan for full protection. Follow the Home Safety Council’s advice below to make sure your home is safe from fire.
1. Put smoke alarms inside or near every bedroom. Test them monthly to make sure they work.
2. Put new batteries in smoke alarms once a year, sooner if the alarm chirps.
3. Make a fire escape plan for your family. Find two exits out of every room. Pick a meeting place outside. Practice makes perfect — hold a family fire drill at least twice each year.
4. Always stay in the kitchen while cooking.
5. Keep BBQ grills at least ten feet away from other objects, including the home and any shrubs or bushes.
6. Only light candles when an adult is in the room. Do not allow children to keep candles or incense in their rooms.
7. Store matches and lighters in a locked cabinet, out of reach for young children.
8. Learn how and when to use a fire extinguisher.
9. Space heaters need space. Keep them at least three feet away from things that can burn, such as curtains or stacks of newspaper. Always turn off heaters when leaving the room or falling asleep
10. If you use gasoline, store only a small quantity in an approved gasoline container. Store it in an outdoor shed, away from your home. Never bring any amount of gasoline indoors.

Mobotix released their first mobotix iPhone application. It still has a lot of progress to do as it is not that optimized for viewing or reviewing video or taking snap shots but it is a start to their investment in the mobile world.

Mobotix, since I know you read my blog. THese is what I would like to see for the iphone app:

We have taken this ip camera for a test drive and it is amazing. Now you can cover a wide area with just one camera. It eliminates the need for 8 cameras on an office, convenient store or even a retail store. With its own image correction software, this makes one of the best inventions in the IP industry in my opinion. It is also mac compatible for those of us that love our apple computers. Video of the test run will come up soon. In the meantime, check out these pictures.
