Talking AdSense optimization in Google Ad Manager

It can be tough to sell advertising in today's economy. It can be even
tougher to figure out how to maximize revenue for each ad impression.
Google Ad Manager, our hosted ad serving and management solution for
publishers with small direct sales teams, was built to address these
issues. Ad Manager helps publishers maximize the value of their ad
impressions while reducing ad serving costs.

We
enlisted the help of Nandu Ramani, Engineering Lead on Ad Manager, to
talk about one of Ad Manager's features that helps publishers maximize
the value of their ad impressions: AdSense price optimization.

What is the AdSense price optimization feature in Ad Manager?

<img style="margi(more)

Do you regularly work with your webpages and AdSense implementation,
tinkering with HTML or PHP and creating images and code on the fly? If
you do, Firefox add-ons can help streamline the process of creating
webpages. Here are some in particular that you may find useful:

ColorZilla
This
extension tells you which RGB or hex color you're looking at, to help
you make sure you created that logo for your business with just the
right shade of blue, for instance. The tool also creates custom color
palettes while you're browsing, so you can use them in your designs.

MeasureIt
Like
the name says, use this add-on to measure the width and height in
pixels of any element you see on a webpage. It's very simple to use,
and you can define how much space(more)

We're thrilled to have none other than Blogging Evangelist himself,
Darren Rowse, to share his expert tips on AdSense optimisation.

Darren
first discovered blogging in 2002, and initially thought he'd turn it
into a hobby to supplement his full-time job. These days, Darren runs a
handful of successful blogs, his most popular being Digital Photography School, and has co-authored a book. He also posts regular tips and advice on ProBlogger.net, a respected and successful resource for bloggers around the world.

We
recently caught up with Darren at his home office in Melbourne
Australia, and asked him about his experience with Google AdSense.

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/(more)

You've been asking for more control over the appearance of the ads on
your sites, so we're happy to let you know that you can now change the
font face of the text in ad units on pages in Latin-character languages.
You can choose between Arial, Times, and Verdana font faces. Please
note that while font options will appear in every account, they'll
currently only be applied to ad units on pages primarily in Latin-based
characters.

There are a few ways

Get Goghing with AdSense for search

A few months ago, we shared a number of AdSense for search optimization tips
with you. Here's the story of one AdSense publisher who recently tried
some of these techniques and saw substantial results after making a few
small changes.

VanGoghGallery.com
is an art resource site that provides information about the life and
work of Vincent van Gogh. Site owner Greg Alexander runs the Van Gogh
Gallery to educate and share information about the artist, and has also
used the site to explore new Internet marketing techniques. Greg joined
AdSense in 2007, and although he didn't know much about the program at
first, he found it "a great opportunity to generate some revenue
without spending the effort to sell ads." He also tried other ad
providers, "but none of them yielded the results that AdSense did. (more)

AdSense
publisher Next Small Things has long understood that search is the
entry point for users to find what they're looking for on the web. In
fact, the idea for CoolChaser.com,
a MySpace layout creation and customization site (and Next Small
Things's largest business to date), came from the observation that many
web surfers were using the company's search engine to find instructions
to change their MySpace backgrounds. The observation and ensuing
business idea has paid off, and in just one year CoolChaser.com has
gained a loyal user base: over 200,000 users are now finding or
creating layouts on the site every day. "CoolChaser has become a
one-stop-shop for layouts because of the ease of use and the choice and
ability for users to express what they feel at the time," says founder
Chao Lam.

With over 20 million user-submitted layouts (and
3,000 created every hour), it was becoming increasingly difficult for
users to find the layouts they were lo(more)

scouring stores far and wide, suddenly your hunt is over: the stars
have aligned to bring you just what you're looking for -- and not a
moment too soon. It's a bit the same way when a search brings you to
just the right site. But what if your site's just the right site, and
users can't find it?

We're happy to let you know that you don't
need divine forces to play a role in the findability of your site. Nope
-- you can help make sure that your site turns up just when it should
by taking advantage of these tips from our Search Quality Team.

Not
sure if all your pages are being seen by Google? Search for your site's
address after the command "site", like [site:example.com]. When you see
your pages in the results, check your snippet content and page titles.
Include information that matches the topic of a particular page. If
anything is missing or you want more details, you can also use the <a href="htt(more)

Many publishers have approached us looking for a way to monetize their
domains, and today, we're excited to announce the expansion of AdSense
for domains. This product allows publishers to earn revenue through ads
placed on undeveloped domains.

With
AdSense for domains, users can find relevant information rather than
see empty pages or "page not found" errors. Today we present ads,
links, and search results on the pages, and may add other useful
information in the future. To ensure positive user experience and the
quality of our network, these sites are monitored for policy compliance and prohibited from using text and images designed to confuse users.

Advertisers also have <a href="https://adwords.google.com/select/afc/casestu(more)

1. Format is important for multiple ad units
Placing a skyscraper
above the fold on the left side of your forum seems to produce slightly
better performance than other positioning. However, when using multiple
ad units throughout the page our horizontal bias still favors the
leaderboard. See the Forum Heat Map below for more details.

Blogtimize!

Blogging is near and dear to our hearts here at Inside AdSense. We know you want to get the most out of those posts " but how do you do it?

1. Choose the right ad formats

Because the typical blog layout uses a narrow section for posts, the medium rectangle fits nicely at the end of each post. The medium rectangle also supports image ads, increasing the competition and revenue potential for that ad space. For shorter posts, a banner may be a better fit.

2. Place ads where your readers will notice

Blog main page:

Whether
the subject is gadgets, gossip, or a glimpse into the writer's personal
life, readers are deeply engaged with the (more)

Unobtrusive ads can boost revenue

Sharon Maguire expected that matching her Google ads to her site, dogbreedinfo.com,
would give it a cleaner look and feel that her visitors would
appreciate. What she didn't expect was the large revenue increase
spurred by her changes -- AdSense revenue nearly doubled, to $650 per
day.

When generating her ad code, Maguire chose a white
background and white borders to blend her ads more effectively into her
site's overall color scheme. "Originally I'd chosen the standard
'Mother Earth' palette with the thin outline of a border," Maguire
said. "I was happy with performance, but could see the revenue
potential of the ad units. I discovered by simply removing the border
around the ad units the AdSense revenue doubled."

Before:
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://adsen(more)

If you’ve ever wondered how your earnings would change if you swapped a
banner ad for a leaderboard or if you changed your color palette to
Open Air, now you can find out by using A/B testing. In this brief
tutorial, we'll review the fundamentals of completing an A/B test.

Tutorial

Let's
say you’ve got a gut feeling that a leaderboard ad would double your
revenue compared to a banner. To prove it, you'll need some evidence,
so you decide to perform an A/B Test.

First, you'll need to create two custom channels,
one for each ad unit you're going to be testing. Then, create a
leaderboard ad unit and a banner ad unit with identical settings,
except for the ad format. Be sure to assign each ad unit the

Content performance. Last week, we reinforced the importance of bigger ad units. This week, we're showcasing how a better ad unit design can result in improved AdSense performance.

*Please note tha(more)

often receive requests to recommend strategies to improve AdSense

'optimisation', we understand that this term can make the process sound
more difficult than it really is. In response, we're releasing a

Say hello to Adsense placement targeting

We wanted to let you know about two recent changes to our site
targeting feature. As you may know, site targeting allows advertisers
to select specific publisher sites on which to run their ads.
Advertisers can target your site if they've determined a match between
their offerings and the interests of visitors to your site.

The first change is that we’ve renamed 'site targeting' to 'placement targeting' to better reflect the variety of targeting options
we offer. Advertisers can still target their ads to an entire site, but
they can now also target your individual ad units or groups of pages
based on how you’ve set up ad placements</(more)

Adsense Accidental clicks fade into the background

Earlier this year we stepped back to examine the value users,
advertisers, and publishers derive from clicks on content ads. As you
integrate ads with your site's content and navigation, we want to
ensure a positive user experience. We identified a few areas for
improvement and began implementing changes, starting with our new ad formats in April.

Continuing
these improvements, we've just changed our text ads slightly to help
reduce accidental clicks. In the past, users could click on both the
background and full text of an ad, but now they can click only on the
title and URL of a text ad. By allowing users to click only on the ad
title and URL, we aim to decrease accidental clicks, better aligning
visitor behavior with their intent. Overall, the decrease in accidental
clicks(more)
