The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Review

A long time ago, I purchased The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, with hopes to improve my drawing. While I enjoyed reading first half of the book, and doing to projects, I lost interest—something I shouldn’t have done. However, I recently picked the book back up and completed (almost) all the projects. After completing the book, I’ve realized how amazing it is. While I’m not a great artist, I understand how to draw now—a concept that I would have never understood without this book.

I just switched my site from Textpattern to Symphony CMS. I originally did not expect do that because I loved Textpattern and had absolutely had no issues or problems with it. However, being I, I ended up trying to build my site with Symphony CMS—just to learn it and check it out. Once I did that, I was too amazed by it to not use it.

Tweeking Joytistic

I designed a new simple layout for Joytistic, although I kept Miss Lashes included in it. The major change is that “stuff” has become two sections, “themes” and “wallpapers.” Additionally, the four major sections, art, words, themes, and wallpapers, all appear on the front page. Perhaps understanding what I’m saying is confusing, but after browsing around, you might get what I’m talking about.

This, I hope, is an improvement. I’m moving away from the design of a blog (since it really isn’t one) and moving toward a site tailored toward what I post. Enjoy the art, themes, and Miss Lashes. I think she’s here to stay.

Blushing Branches

With acrylic paint on 11x15 in. watercolor paper, I painted the side of a tree with a pink sky. I guess I like leafless, branches with flowers, because I keep painting them. During the beginning of spring, this is how trees really are (without the pink and swirly sky), which I like better than the summer when leaves block the view of all the flowers.

Eyooble

This poor little Eyooble was left all alone in a classroom with nobody to take care of her. I don’t know how she got there. Of course, I found her and brought her home with me. She’s about two inches tall, and has the cutest huge eyes. She has a slight jello-like bounce to her texture, and speaks only in high shrieks.

Swirl Flawn

A flamingo? A swan? A swirl? No! It’s a Swirl Flawn. While playing around with swirls and wings—the same process that created the Flying Swirl—the Swirl Flawn was born. I drew it on the back of of test, but then horrifically realized that I would have to turn it in. “I’ll forget what I drew, and the bird-like creature will die!” I worried in my head. Luckily, when I received the test back, I was able to copy down the drawing, and eventually made a vector of it.

Isn’t he cute? At least, I think he’s a he…. Anyways, please be nice to him. He’s very shy. :)

Swirl Branched Tree

Once upon a time, a swirl tree had no friends or parents, so nobody taught it how to grow. The tree grew up all by itself, and did so in swirls because it liked swirls. When the tree finally found other tree friends, his friends loved his branches, and wished they could be swirled branched trees too!

Here is a lonely tree interesting tree with an uninteresting name. I have a hard time giving things names. I called this a “Swirled Branched Tree” because the branches are swirled and the tree is branched.

Swirls Fly

No, really. Swirl’s can fly. I have the proof!

I drew this on a piece of paper a long time ago. Surprisingly, I loved the simple drawing I made, so I turned it into a vector illustration. Below is the result. It simple, but I like the idea of a flying swirl because I love drawing swirls.

“What is it?” all my drawings asked each other. “A dolphin,” one replied. “A fish,” others said.

“A pretty blob,” I concluded. “Ooohhh,” they all replied. “A blob?” Pretty Blob spoke worriedly. From then on, she wore a permanently shocked expression on her face.

Note: I’m not crazy. I don’t talk to my drawings. I made that up.

I made a little creature in Adobe Illustrator. I took a circle, and smushed it at the bottom, and added eyes, a mouth, and some other little things.

I intended her to look like a little, cute, round, small monster. It kind of reminded me of the little characters in LocoRoco. My parents said she looked more like a fish…

Monstrous or Cute?

“Hi” the octopus said to me. “Grr! I’m scary and monstrous!”
I wasn’t so sure.

After experimenting with Inkscape, I made this blue little octopus. I saw a few images of vector creatures, and I had to try myself.

Note: I’m not crazy. The octopus wasn’t really taking to me. I made that up.

Shrimpish Embroyish Creative Something

I made a “something” with Illustrator. I really like swirls, and I like drawing eyes, so this was the result. I’m not sure what it is—maybe it’s a shrimp or some kind of embryo of a swirl. (I have no idea that swirls had embryos!)

Peachy Heads

(Mumbling.)
“Speak up, honey.” said a small, feminine squeaky voice. “I can’t hear you.”
“Sheedidntduwmamowd.“the mumbling voice replied.
“What?”
“Eedidntdamymoud!“the mumbling voice replied.
“Oh my god.” the squeaky voice realized. “She didn’t draw your mouth? We better get that girl’s attention.”
“Ya.”

“Hey you!” the squeaky voice shouted.
“Me?” I asked.
“Yeah, you!” she yelled again. “You forgot to draw that poor guy’s mouth.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” I drew a mouth on the mumbling peachy head. “There.”
“Maybe if you drew our heads a little bigger, you would have noticed!” the no-longer-mumbling peachy head told me with an angry voice.

I discovered peachy heads while doodling on the side of my notes. I drew a large swirl and was unsatisfied. Then, I added a tiny little head on top. It was so cute! I went home and made a whole family of peachy heads.

Note: I’m not crazy. The peachy heads were not really taking to me. I made that up.

Floating Swirls

I created this illustration my first drawing it in my sketchbook sometime in 2009. On paper, it’s certainly my best. However, my pen tool skills were just okay at the time. When I vectorized this image in Illustrator, I zoomed in a lot. This technique is accurate, but now flawless. The results are shaky lines exaggerating mistakes from the original drawing. It’s still a pretty illustration, but I can do better now.

Now, I learned a better way to vectorize drawing. Do not zoom in too much. The entire shape you’re tracing should be visible on the screen.

Wooble

Lilly, a wooble, was enjoying her day just like any other. She woke up and swam in her usual jelly. She changed into her favorite pink skin. She even had a chance to eat her favorite magazine.

Then she saw two Soobles evilly performing a dancing ritual. Lilly knew they were going to eat her.

Soobles

Marry and Jared, two soobles, were enjoying their time dancing. It was their second week of marriage. Nothing could stop them from having fun.

Then they heard huge footsteps from behind them. A horrifying wooble was about to eat them.

The Meeting

“AAAAHH!’ Lilly screamed.
“AAAAHH!” Marry and Jared screamed and huddled together.
“Save me, Jared.” Marry cried.
“mommy!” Lilly shrieked.

“Honey…” Jared whispered to Lilly. “The wooble is screaming, herself.”
“It’s a trick!” Lilly argued to Jared.
“Wait.” Lilly realized calmly. “Are you scared of me?”
“Yeah, we—” Marry started.
“No, sweetie.” Jared said with a soothing voice, scratching his head. “We just didn’t know you were there.”

Wooble With Wings

The is one of my later illustrations of wooble characters. As you can see, this young wooble is surprised she grew wings. She never had them before! Her mom smiles and comforts her… as if she knew this would happen….

The Wooble School was my first “Wooble” illustration that I drew in my sketch book. I started with the main family of four in the front, and added more characters in the back. My favorite character is the pink girl in the main family holding on to her mom.
