It's been a topic of discussion for a while now, but I wanted to whip out a quick photoshop.
He reported to camp this spring about 25 pounds bigger than last year. His theory: He lost some pop last season and the extra muscle will help him regain his power stroke.
All that muscle is gonna have an effect. 25 home runs minimum for R-Mart. I'm calling it right now.

Also, please listen to me when I say to keep your Google Safe Search ON when looking for bodybuilder pictures. I saw some things that I could've gone my entire lifetime without seeing.

Soon To Be Ex-Dodgers: Chin-Lung Hu

(We hardly knew ye)

One thing that I can't stand about the Ned Coletti regime is when young players are cast aside for older veterans. It's like he's trying to turn the Dodgers into a Southern California version of the Giants (except most of our prospects turn out to be good). Unless the younger player is exceptionally good (Ethier, Kemp, Kershaw, etc.), the older mediocre veteran will always get the job over the unproven potential of a prospect. Last year, Delwyn Young was sacrificed and traded to the Pirates to make room for Juan Castro and Doug Mientkiewicz. Delwyn ended up doing pretty good for the Pirates until he hit the wall in September (.470 OPS), probably because he was not used to playing that often in the Dodgers organization. Aren't the Dodgers looking for a left handed bat off the bench? Sure could have used Delwyn right about now.

This brings me to Chin-Lung Hu. He's got a great glove and has shown flashes that he could be an adequate bat. Sounds like a perfect recipe for our backup SS to give Furcal one day off a week. And yet, the Dodgers have invited 3 non-roster SS (Alfredo Amezaga, Nick Green, and old friend Angel Berroa). These guys are not even as good as Hu is now, and Hu still has a chance to at least get a little bit better, but I have a terrible feeling that one of those 3 is going to have a great spring training that they have a 0% chance of replicating in the regular season. Colletti and Torre are not going to realize this (of course) and Hu will be sacrificed to make room on the 40-man roster. I'm sure I'll be writing about a Chin-Lung Hu trade by the end of April.

There's Always Next Year

As L-Ram is currently in the ICU after slicing his inner thigh shortly after last night's game, he scribbled these notes on his bedpan for me to transcribe into coherent sentences, along with my hilariously forced interjections:

Best Biased Moment: Manning's TD throw to put the Colts up 10-0. If only I knew then that it would be the happiest moment of the night for me.

Best Non-Biased Moment: The Saints carrying Payton on their shoulders after the Gatorade shower and imagining Jerry Jones watching at home punching himself for choosing Wade Phillips over Payton.

Firstly, Wade Phillips is the second coming of Jimmy Johnson, albeit fluffier. Just you wait. Also, it seems your boy Sean Payton has a case of vertigo as he seriously pleaded to be put down after the players scooped him up.

Hero: No doubt, it has to be Drew Brees. He was excellent last night.

I agree with this. The guy was on point. The Colts took away the deep ball, but thanks to an o-line that gave him 3 days to throw the ball, he always found the open man.

The Goat: I'm going with Hank Baskett. Not only do you marry the most annoying of Hefner's ex-girlfriends, not only did you get cut by an Eagles team that has no WR depth and getting a 2nd chance with the Colts, you still cough up the ball on an onside kick when no Saints player was within 5 yards of you. I hate you, Hank Baskett.

My goat is the Colts offensive playcalling after the goal line stand in the 2nd quarter. It's times like that where you've just demoralized the opposition that you want to step on their throat. Instead, we saw a couple of running plays in an effort to milk the clock. While I was rooting for the Colts, I was glad to see the Saints capitalize on such poor recognition of an opportunity.

Turning Point: Most people are going with the onside kick, but for me, I got a bad feeling when the Colts, leading 17-16 at the time, sent 42 year old Matt Stover out to attempt a 51-yard FG. Its never a good sign when your kicker's age is within 10 years of a 50 yard FG. Predictably, Stover misses, the Saints get the ball on the 40 yard line, and march down for a TD to take a lead they don't give up.

The balls of steel it took to call an onside kick demonstrated such recklessness that Payton had to win this game otherwise he'd look like an incredible dumbass of dinosauric proportions. Fortunately for him, WIDE RECEIVER Hank Baskett made sure to leave his "stick-em" in the locker room and assure that Sean Peyton will be remembered as an offensive genius.

Bitchassness Moment: Darren Sharper lagging behind and talking shit to Peyton as he passed him on Porter's interception return for a TD. You just clinched the game, no need to be an ass about it Sharper!

My bitchassness moment goes to the referees for their unwillingness to call the block from behind on Manning by Bobby McCray. Would it have changed the outcome of the game? Who knows. The Colts weren't exactly a defensive stalworth but the video's below if you missed it :

Best Commerical: I'm a sucker for Betty White, so I'm going with the Snickers commercial. Showing Abe Vigoda at the end was just icing on the cake.

I loves me some Abe Vigoda, but truTV wins one internet with their commercial featuring Punxsutawney Polamalu:

[/L-Ram Transmission]

In the end, L-Ram was devastated, and I was saved from any bragging that would've driven me insane over the next few months. I guess now we'll have to focus on baseball although I've neglected to read pretty much any Dodger related news in quite a while so I'm rusty. Good thing I don't do any number crunching, or provide any insight that isn't already out there -- HOORAY FOR PHOTOSHOP AND VIDEO CLIPS!

Colts-Saints Superbowl = I Win

The Colts overcame an early 17-6 Jets lead, to come back and win it 30-17. Peyton Manning had one of the best playoff performances of his career throwing for 377 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no picks. The Jets kept blitzing and while it did give the Colts problems in the beginning, Indy eventually figured it out and Peyton made the Jets pay. Great games from both Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, not to mention the fact that the Colts defense did a great job containing the Jets running attack.

In the NFC championship game, that ol' gunslinger Brett Favre added to his list of legendary playoff interceptions by throwing a horrible pick with 15 seconds left in the game with the ball on the Saints 33. He could have at least let his kicker miss the FG so the blame would fall on him, but ol' Brett wanted to hog the spotlight for himself. The Vikings never saw the ball again as the Saints won it 31-28 in their first possesion of OT.

That sets up a great matchup of Colts-Saints in the Super Bowl. I want Manning to win his 2nd championship, but I'm not going to be mad if the Saints win. Drew Brees was shunned by the both the Chargers and the Dolphins, their best receiver was a guy taken in the 7th round (Marques Colston) and there's also the whole Hurricane Katrina-Superdome thing (which the media will play on a continuous loop for 2 weeks). It's tough to root against the Saints, but my love for Manning is just a bit greater. However, I will show my support for both teams, by having one of those split jerseys made, which Ferio made a quick artist's rendering of:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 264px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hMO8i95SCzE/S146fVPM2fI/AAAAAAAAABk/Hrs9muxrvqQ/s320/manning_bush.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430842510606653938" />

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to place my order at the swap meet to make sure this is ready in 2 weeks.

Congratulations Colts and Saints

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate L-Ram's Colts, and the Saints who will be playing in the Super Bowl in 2 weeks.

My moneyline bet on the Jets looked like a stroke of genius after the first quarter of the Colts-Jets game, but shortly thereafter, Peyton Manning remembered who he was, and picked apart the Jets secondary like Ron Coomer working on a whole barbecued chicken from Costco.

As for the NFC Championship game, I was glad to see the Minnesota Favres crash and burn and I'll make a prediction in the form of an image.

That, and Peter King will devote a 4 page article to Favre's legacy, and potential for coming back next season.

As for the Super Bowl, I've already purchased my form-fitting Colts t-shirt (which is a poor choice for my portly self) and will be posing as a die-hard fan hopefully somewhere public because I desperately seek approval from my peers.

In other news, Club America's star forward Salvador Cabañas is currently in critical condition after being shot in the head during an attempted robbery of an upscale bar in Mexico City last night. It's the longest active playoff streak in any of the four major sports. So, it must be quite a shock to Red Wings fans when they see that their team is tied for the final playoff spot with about 30 games left in the season.

Apparently, the pressure is getting to them because before the start of the 3rd period of the Kings-Red Wings game, the game was delayed due to a fan who climbed the rafters and refused to come down:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hMO8i95SCzE/S1yUuHfn_-I/AAAAAAAAABU/YwISAflGOV8/s320/Kings2010+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430378770708561890" />

The refs decided to start the game, but the section directly beneath the guy had to be cleared out in case he did decide to do something stupid:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hMO8i95SCzE/S1yU7rHy3sI/AAAAAAAAABc/a8VruRS1Nh4/s320/Kings2010+005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430379003610586818" />

They never announced what happened to the guy, but I assume he was talked down, because by the end of the game, fans were back in their seats. Even worse, the Red Wings were winning 2-1 when the guy decided to climb the rafters. They ended up losing 3-2. Someone needs to check on him ASAP!

'Dilla Time Extended

As the leading source for Vicente Padilla news (a simple Google image search for "Chente Padilla" will confirm this) I feel bad for not acknowledging the latest 1 year deal reached just yesterday.

The club and the 32-year-old right-hander agreed to a one-year contract. According to baseball sources, the deal is worth $5.025 million -- a $4.025 million base salary and $1 million signing bonus.

L-Ram brought it to my attention, and called me the c-word for not posting about it so here it is...if you can even read any of this with the distracting anigif above.TEH ANIGIF PWNS JUR EYES!

With this news, 4 out of 5 spots in the Dodgers rotation are now set. The 5th spot will be filled by a spry Ismael Valdez during spring training. You heard it here first! The first run of "Si Se Puede" t-shirts will be done just in time for the World Cup.

Sincerely yours,
Ferioso (in case you didn't know so).
While L-Ram is euphoric after his team’s victory this weekend, I’m wallowing in sadness over the total domination exerted by the Vikings over what appeared to be a helpless Cowboys team. Going into this, I expected Minnesota’s front 4 and blitz packages to provide some form of pressure, but not the turnstiles that Romo stood behind the entire game. To say that I was surprised by the dominance of the Vikings defense would be an enormous understatement.

Regardless of what transpired, people like L-Ram will still point to Tony Romo and put the blame squarely on his shoulders. I say put a statue like Peyton Manning behind that line yesterday and he would do no better.

Here’s a list the typical Tony Romo Hater pointed to before the start of the 2009 season:

Chokes in big games

Throws too many INTs

Can’t win in December

Can’t win a playoff game

All of these points were addressed this year, however, like any hater worth his salt (see; troll), they adapt and/or dwell on past statistics to suit their argument, or take up the “what have you done for me lately” stance. While I appreciate their dedication, I think it’s time to stop it already. Not for me, but before yourself. Other less understanding individuals may see through this argument and point out the inner asshat in you which may result in hurt feelings and troll tears.

With that said, thank you Dallas for a great year and it's a shame it had to come to such an abrupt end.

Bring On The Jets!

(Rex Ryan is willing to sign anyone to help him stop Peyton)

It wasn't the prettiest win, but the Colts were able to beat the Ravens 20-3 thanks to key fumbles by Ed Reed and Ray Rice. Once the Colts went into the 4th quarter leading 17-3, I knew it was over because Joe Flacco is an awful playoff QB at this point in his career (QB rating in 5 playoff games: 46.5).

And yesterday, the Jets pulled off the upset of the playoffs so far by beating the Chargers 17-14. Honestly, I'm terrified of the Jets. I know the media points to the fact that the Colts were beating the Jets in that Week 16 game before handing the game to them by pulling all their starters, but they were still killing the Colts rushing the ball. Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene ran the ball a combined 39 times for over 200 yards in that game and I'm sure the Colts will see plenty more of that. It's up to Manning to make the correct reads and make the Jets pay for their constant blitzing and the Colts should move on to the Super Bowl.

I'm also glad to report that Ferio is no longer on suicide watch after the Cowboys got wrecked by the Vikings. Tony Romo had 0 touchdowns and 3 turnovers, but to be fair his O-Line played like shit. Still, Tony Romo sucks.

Are The Dodgers Actually Trying To Sign Someone Useful?

(I expect the Dodgers to sign Jake Taylor to back up Russ Martin sometime next week)

Recently, I read about the Dodgers pursuit of Joel Piniero and dismissed it because we all know the Dodgers are broke and have to sign second rate veterans to minor league deals so that it looks like they are trying to improve the team. Yet, I continue to see reports that they are trying to come up with a way to get the money to sign Piniero.

Not only that, but today also comes word that they might actually bring 'Cente Padilla back to the team:

The Dodgers are open to bringing back Padilla if they are unable to land Pineiro, a major league source told Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

I've completely forgotten about Padilla since the season ended and thought he retired or something, which makes me feel bad since he gave the Dodgers 2 great postseason starts before imploding in his last one. I wouldn't mind either of these guys as the Dodgers #4 starter. They are both going to give you 180-200 innings while giving you an ERA around 4. Then the winner of the Elbert/McDonald/Haeger/Stults deathmatch gets to be the #5 starter. Between Piniero and Padilla, I'm partial to Padilla for 3 reasons:

1) Those 2 postseason starts
2) He's more likely to sign a 1 year deal
3) It will give me a reason to see more of this .gif

13 Years of Futility End Tonight!

Watching tonight's game, this Cowboys team shows something special. To be able to stop that explosive Eagles offense for 2 games straight was a task all its own, but they did that and some.

The media was all over Wade Phillips' and Tony Romo's lack of postseason success and used it to batter us fans over the head for the past 6 days. Now they'll all have to come back to work tomorrow with their tail between their legs (I'm looking at you Mike Florio, Marshall Faulk, and Rodney Harrison, among other "mediots") and proclaim the Cowboys a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

As you can see, that Buchanan's bottle is far from empty so if you'll excuse me, I have some work to do.

Quick update with a gif:
And to all those sportswriters who bitched and moaned about the Colts giving up a chance at a perfect season by resting their starters (Tedy Bruschi & Jason Whitlock, I'm looking at you), let me present to you Exhibit A:

Can you imagine if this would have happened to Reggie Wayne? Those same writers would have cried about how Jim Caldwell sabotaged the team's Super Bowl chances going after some unoffical record. You can never win with the media!

Speaking of Super Bowl chances, I love the Colts' chances to get there. The Ravens defense is overhyped, the Bengals can't throw deep, the Patriots just lost their best WR (yeah, I said it), the Jets don't have a real QB, the Chargers... um, let's just hope one of those other teams beats the Chargers so the Colts don't have to face them.

I wish the Colts would play the Cowboys in the Super Bowl so I could win some money from Ferio, but we all know that he's going to choke on Saturday against the Eagles.
The Dodgers have opened discussions on a multiyear contract with Matt Kemp, but his agent said Kemp might prefer to go year to year.

Of course Matt and his agent are gonna wanna go year to year, are you kidding me? He's in for a huge payday, and I feel really comfortable saying it won't be here. I don't mean to be negative, but I like to keep it real, and real - to me - is the current financial status of the club.

Frank McCourt: Who? Who's Matt Kemp?
Drew McCourt: Matt Kemp's hilarious.
Frank McCourt: Man, fuck you son! I'm glad you think he's so goddamn hilarious because he just walked off with your school clothes money. It's funny isn't it? I'm broke nigga! I'm broke!

With the first full decade of Dodger blogging coming to a close, it occurred to me that it might be time to do a little history preservation before too much time passes. So, as you'll see in the chart below, I'm in the process of trying to build a mini-encyclopedia of all who have blogged about the boys in blue.

Either it's time to actually start writing about baseball, or increase the budget for the marketing department who's brightest idea has been to put L-Ram on Ventura Blvd with a sign. I'm gonna ignore the part where Weisman asks to remind him of any blogs he may have missed because around these parts we like to take things personal. Why, you ask? Because, 1.)L-Ram has thin skin, and 2.)we're internet tough guys. This means war Jon Weisman! Prepare for a barrage of poorly made photoshops, and anigifs.

Now that that's out of the way, on to my real reason for posting. Seeing as how I'm on a baseball writing strike until the Dodgers acquire a legitimate baseball playing human, (or the season starts - whichever comes first) please allow me to take this time to congratulate the Dallas Cowboys for clinching a playoff spot after a win over the mess that is the Washington Redskins.

With this accomplishment, step 1 of Ferio's Plan to Successful Success is now complete.

Step 1: Playoffs.
Step 2: ???
Step 3:

I'd also like to thank da Bears for beating the Favres last night and giving us a shot at the number #2 seed going into the final week.

I'll be back once the rage subsides.

I'd Like To Take This Moment to Thank Tony Dungy

Unfortunately for Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning wasn't there to call the plays during Week 14's Football Night in America when he stated that the Cowboys had "no chance", of beating the Saints. Just a week prior, he placed the blame of the loss to the Giants squarely on the shoulders of Tony Romo who had thrown for 392 yards and 3 touchdowns in that very game. We get it Tony, you don't like Romo because he's not serious enough for you and acts like a human being and not a sophisticated football robot sent back through time to change the future for one lucky <strike>lady</strike> coach.

Regardless, thank you Mr. Dungy for providing my Dallas Cowboys with the tacklin' fuel necessary to knock off the undefeated Saints.

It Has Happened

The namesake...has been traded.

The Chicago White Sox acquired outfielder Juan Pierre from the Los Angeles Dodgers for two minor leaguers and cash.

Of the $18.5 million left on Pierre's contract, the White Sox will pay $3 million in 2010 and $5 million in 2011, sources said.

Only $8 mil off an $18.5 contract? Really you guys? I wonder if the Sox will even allow the Dodgers to pick 2 out of their top prospects. Probably not right? I almost forgot we're the Dodgers and we're entering the year of the dumpster dive (patent pending).

I'm still getting over the shock of losing my poster boy. The banner will be brought down, and it'll be a bitch to fold it into a triangle by myself because everyone else is too busy celebrating the trade. Who could forget his MLB debut where he out-dueled Randy Johnson in Arizona on his 20th birthday? I was fully on the Edwin Jackson train and I'm not afraid to admit it (Ferio can confirm). Over the next two years he pitched in only 52.4 innings with disastrous results for the Dodgers as he was being shuttled up and down the minors. During the 2005 offseason, he was traded to Tampa Bay for Danys Baez and Lance Carter and we all know how that went for the Dodgers. Meanwhile, I was devastated that the Dodgers had given up on Jackson so easily. I think this Anchorman quote sums up my feelings of how I felt when I heard Jackson was traded:

We need you. Hell, I need you. I'm a mess without you. I miss you so damn much. I miss being with you, I miss being near you. I miss your laugh. I miss your scent; I miss your musk. When this all gets sorted out, I think you and me should get an apartment together.

In the 3 years with Tampa and Detroit, he made steady improvement until he finally became an all-star this past year. I was still an Edwin Jackson fan (even drafted him insanely high in a fantasy league) and since he was in the AL, it made it easier to root for him.

But now? As of today, he's a Diamondback as a result of the 3 team trade between the Yankees, Diamondbacks, and Tigers. That means my beloved Dodgers will now have to face him on a regular basis. This sucks. I hope he sticks it to the Dodgers in his first start and then the Dodgers demolish him in every start after, but I wont enjoy seeing it.

Mexico Draws the Inaugural Game in South Africa

The draw for the 2010 World Cup took place today and Mexico was placed in Group A alongside hosts South Africa, Uruguay, and France. In the end, a very difficult, but not impossible group. By now, we're all familiar with the circumstances surrounding France's qualification, and both Mexico and Uruguay struggled on their way to qualify. I'm gonna remain positive, I've marked my calendar for the following games:

Friday, 6/11: Mexico vs South Africa

Thursday, 6/17: Mexico vs France

Tuesday, 6/22: Mexico vs Uruguay

Other notable group games:

Friday, 6/11: France vs Uruguay

Saturday, 6/12: USA vs England

Monday, 6/14: Italy vs Paraguay

Tueday, 6/15: Ivory Coast vs Portugal

There's a few other interesting matchups like Brazil-Portugal, or Germany-Ghana but that'll depend on the standings at the time as one team or the other may already be qualified for the next round.

The U.S.' group is the following:

England

USA

Algeria

Slovenia

This looks to be a cakewalk for the US but 3 & Out® is always in play when it comes to the U.S. in international tournaments.

I can't wait!

Remember This?

It turns out it was for this:

In the premiere episode at 10 p.m. ET on December 2, Seau will be working as
part of the construction crew helping to build the new stadium for the New
York Giants. In the second episode of the night, Seau will wear Dodger blue and serve as the batboy/equipment manager during a Dodgers home stand
against the Milwaukee Brewers. Some of the other episodes will feature Seau
working as the equipment manager for the Washington Capitals, as an IndyCar
pit crew member, a college football writer for Sports Illustrated, a member
of an arena conversion crew and as bullfighter at a Professional Bull Riders
(PBR) event.

The shows set to premier tomorrow at 7 PST on Versus. I have Directv, who is apparently very unhappy with Comcast, but if you watch it, let us know how it goes and see if Will Ohman freezes Junior's sandals.
Lincecum had more strikeouts, but Wainwright had the better ERA. Not to mention the fact that Wainwright pitched much better down the stretch, while Lincecum struggled. Do I really think Lincecum is a thief? No, but I hate him and I hate the Giants even more, so I decided to use that headline because it makes me feel better. The real person to blame here is Chris Carpenter since he took some of the votes from his Cardinals teammate.

Free agency started today, but I'm not expecting anything big from the Dodgers, so I'm not too excited about it. They will probably just pick up a journeyman pitcher to fill out the rotation and a journeyman 2B to compete with Dewitt. I hope that they pick up Erik Bedard on a one-year contract though. If this guy stays healthy, he should dominate the NL West.

Also, check out this crazy video that KempKershaw found. All this time, I thought that Dodger fans would naturally root for the Kings since they are both LA teams. I guess I was wrong.

Cuban '10: Because We're Pretty Sure He Has a Prenup

DALLAS -- Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is interested in buying a controlling share of the Los Angeles Dodgers if "the right deal" falls in place.

The Dodgers aren't for sale, but that possibility looms as owner Frank McCourt's divorce with his estranged wife, Jamie, plays out.

There's nothing like a pic of a frustrated Ricardo Lavolpe to cheer me up.

In year where nothing’s gone our way, this is a breath of fresh air. A 4-1 stomping of Atlas last night and made me forget about the horrible season if only for 90 minutes. While it doesn’t erase our overall performance, it leaves me with a good feeling knowing that these guys still have some fight left in them. Maybe it was the threat of next week possibly being their last with the club, or they realized who they played for and that this game is not one you’re allowed to lose.

This kind of dynamic attacking hasn't been seen since the days of Hans Westerhoff, and while Flores had his routs, they surely didn't look as premeditated. The team looked in control from...well, :15 into the game where Bravo beat his man for the first goal of the game. From then on, Atlas had a brief spell of dominance to pull back 1-2, but it didn't last long as Chivas responded with 2 goals of their own. The second half was somewhat boring as a toothless Atlas tried to get back into the game, but Chivas stood strong and held them in check for 45 minutes.

For once, everyone stepped up when they needed to, including Bravo who was seen fighting for possession as far as his own 18 yard box, scored a goal, and provided an assist to a “Chicharito” Hernandez who has himself blossomed into a legitimate goal scorer this season and remains as probably the only bright spot this season.

The cliché goes “it’s been a season full of ups and downs”, but this season has been nothing but downs. This win, however, creates a small blip on Guadalajara’s heart monitor, and finally gives us fans something to feel good about.

Like I said, this doesn’t save the season for us like it would’ve done for Atlas who’s front office went as far as creating a campaign boasting, “Vale más un Clásico que un campeonato”. If that’s not embracing your mediocrity, I don’t know what is.
