For almost a century one of America's strangest mysteries has been found in remote Death Valley, California. It's there -- actually at a specific dry lakebed called Racetrack Playa -- that stones are claimed to mysteriously move on their own, when no one is looking. The phenomenon occurs in a handful of other places as well, though none are as well known as those in Death Valley. They moved very slowly, in some cases only a few inches over months or years, but their trails can clearly be seen in the dried mud behind them.

Over the years many explanations have been offered, ranging from hoaxing to aliens to some sort of localized, unknown magnetic effect.

Others have suggested that the area's strong winds might move the stones, but that doesn't explain why they'd move at different rates and sometimes in different directions. For many years the best scientific explanation was that the rocks moved due to a specific combination of wind, temperature, and water. Racetrack Playa is in a desert, but sometimes collects water from rain and melting snow, providing a slick surface over which the stones might move.

The mystery was finally solved in 2014 when a team of researchers set up cameras over the area and measured the rocks' movement patterns. They concluded that the stones moved under just the right conditions when ice formed under the rocks and moved them, usually only a little bit at a time: "moving sheets of ice tens of meters in extent but only a few millimeters thick are clearly effective at moving rocks in their path." The study, "Sliding Rocks on Racetrack Playa, Death Valley National Park: First Observation of Rocks in Motion" was published on Aug. 27, 2014 in the open-access journal PLoS ONE.

This painting by Rodrigo Figueredo depicts the soldados de franela (T-shirt soldiers) comprised of students and other protesters of Venezuela who confronted Nicolas Maduro's government in February. "It would be an honour and a historical justice to make them known," says Rodrigo.

The year saw the emergence of Islamic State or IS. The group formerly known as ISIS is a radical Islamist group that has seized large swathes of territory in eastern Syria and across northern and western Iraq. Farid Bachtiar's cartoon seems to suggest the US will come and sweep away the group.

Meanwhile, Brice Hall has chosen to focus on the millions of people displaced by the conflict in Syria, of whom "the vast number drift to refugee camps offering the slimmest of futures," he says. Many campaigns throughout 2014 have sought to use social media to make their voices known. "This year so many people have been out protesting for justice, and each protest now seems to come with a hashtag," says Jamillah Knowles.

The US has seen several protests following deaths involving the police. People in Ferguson, Missouri took to the streets following the death of Michael Brown. While in New York city, many demonstrations followed the death of Eric Garner. Karen Kaapcke created this graphite-watercolour drawing of a "die-in" protest outside the Apollo Theatre in December.

The contrast between the Black Friday sales and the deaths from the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa and beyond puzzled Joshua Riches. He entitled his artwork "Black Death Western Priorities in 2014".

Luis Pastor felt compelled to draw the Ebola virus "because it has been one of the most terrible and unexpected plagues in the 21st Century".

The best development of 2014 according to @yellowmints was the Rosetta mission and the Philae Probe landing on Comet 67P. Philae made history in November when it was dropped by Esa's Rosetta satellite to the surface of 67P - the first time this feat has been achieved.

For artist JotaCrabon, the currency and oil markets, combined with the weak Russian economy, were his muse. He says: "With the falling price of Brent, the oil dollars leave Russia and do break the rouble."

"As we head into winter again I was reminded of the terrible floods that were experienced by those that live on the Somerset Levels in England," says Jan Woodhouse. She adds: "There seemed to be a very slow response to their plight and no recent updates as to how they are now."

Malaysian Airlines MH370 disappeared mid-flight on 8 March 2014. What happened to it remains a mystery, although Rifard Khalideen from Sri Lanka says: "Even though there was no debris of the flight found in oceans, we hope it's safe somewhere."

"In the midst of an already unstable scenery, hosting the World Cup only fuelled the indignation of the Brazilian people," says Robert Temoteo. "While urgent matters such as hunger and extreme poverty torment the country, millions were spent building stadiums which will most likely never be used again."

Çigdem Mentesoglu Chatzoudas is an artist from Turkey. She chose the gentrification of Istanbul as her topic. The image of a lone house in the midst of development in Fikirtepe became her subject. "This is the symbol of resistance" she says.

The UK completed the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan in October 2014. "I chose to draw an extremely simple sketch," says Ellie Cuff. "I drew this in about 10 minutes and made it look rushed to show the rush the troops would feel to get home, and how a 13-year campaign can be over in a flight."

Hamid Khan from Pakistan, responded to the Taliban's attack on a school in Peshawar with this drawing. He says children in his country "want to study, to dream about a bright future, but then terrorists change our future; they not only kill us, they steal our lives, our dream, our culture, our peace, our schools, our markets, our streets."

For Glenn Fitzpatrick, it was the offer by tech giants Facebook and Apple to freeze the eggs of female employees, which inspired this picture. He says: "As the gap between rich and poor gets bigger it is as if the super power companies are now looking into the genetics of what makes a successful candidate." He wonders if this is the beginning of a "Brave New World" or if it suggests the gap between rich and poor will get wider.

A fingerprint is unique. No two are alike, which makes them ideal for biometric authentication. Until they’re not.

A hacker named Jan Krissler, also known as starbug, reported that he replicated the fingerprint of Germany’s defense minister Ursula von der Leyen by using several photographs of her right thumb taken at public events.

IPhone 5S: How Fingerprint Scanners Work

Krissler and fellow hacker Tobias Fiebig presented their findings Dec. 27 at the 31st annual Chaos Computer Club convention in Hamburg, Germany. The CCC is considered Europe’s largest association of hackers.

To clone the fingerprint, Krissler pieced together a close-up photo of von der Leyen’s thumb with several other images taken from different angles. Then he used a commercially available fingerprint identification technology called VeriFinger to make a digital image of von der Leyen’s print.

This is not the first time Krissler has presented evidence that biometric identification, such as face, iris and fingerprint recognition, is not 100 percent fool-proof.

In 2008, he published a fingerprint belonging to Wolfgang Schaeuble, who at the time was Germany’s interior minister.

“After this talk, politicians will presumably wear gloves when talking in public,” Kissler said at the Chaos Computer Club conference.

William Shakespeare

Shakespeare was baptised in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon on 26 April 1564. He was the eldest son of John Shakespeare, a glover, and Mary Arden, the daughter of a local farmer. John and Mary Shakespeare had 8 children, of whom 5 survived into adulthood - William, Gilbert (1566-1612), Joan (1569-1646), Richard (1574-1613), and Edmund (1580-1612). Shakespeare was probably educated at the King's New School, Stratford-upon-Avon, where he would have learned such subjects as Latin, Greek, rhetoric, and logic. He is next recorded in the licence to allow him to marry Anne Hathaway issued on 27 November 1582. Their first child Susanna was baptised in Stratford on 26 May 1583, followed by twins, Judith and Hamnet, on 2 February 1585. Shakespeare is known to have been in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1587, when he was mentioned in connection with a lawsuit.

Between 1587 and 1592 Shakespeare disappears from all the known surviving records. This period is often referred to as the 'lost years', and has been the subject of much speculation. It has been suggested that he worked as a schoolmaster during this time, or that he became a player when the Queen's Men and other companies visited Stratford-upon-Avon in 1586-1587. By 1592, he was in London as an actor and a dramatist.
During his years in London, Shakespeare maintained his links with Stratford-upon-Avon. His wife and children continued to live there, although his son Hamnet died in 1596. In May 1597, Shakespeare bought the second largest house in the town, New Place, and was listed as a resident there in 1598. During the early 1600s, he bought further property in and around Stratford. His father was buried in Stratford in 1601, followed in 1608 by his mother. On 5 June 1607, Shakespeare's eldest daughter Susanna married Dr John Hall, a distinguished physician, there. Their daughter Elizabeth was baptised on 21 February 1608. His other daughter Judith married Thomas Quiney, a vintner, in Stratford on 10 February 1616.

3 Things You Must Do Before Trying Minimalist Running Shoes

Rather than dropping from a traditional running shoe with a 12mm raised heel all the way down to a zero drop shoe, find a mid-ground model to experiment with first. Switching to a 4-6mm heel will give you a chance to adapt to the minimalist environment without placing unnecessary stress on your body. Wear minimalist shoes while walking to strengthen your feet before going for your first run.

The Galaxy S5’s excellent 16MP camera is its main feature - with high dynamic range resulting in consistently brilliant pictures, and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it autofocus. Samsung has also worked on improving the phone’s durability and usability from its S4 predecessor, with improved resistance to dust and water.

Its ridged silver edge and Elastoplast-style perforated back won’t be to everyone’s tastes, and the market for its use with other products including the Gear smartwatch and Gear Fit fitness band remains relatively small, but Samsung deserves credit for trying to create a whole new technology platform in an area where few rivals are striving as hard.

HTC’s flagship is widely held to be the best-designed Android phone on the market - its all-metal construction has a class that other manufacturers have consistently struggled to provide. But the HTC Sense interface is both clean(ish) and useful where it is conspicuous: think a great weather widget and really useful ways to share photos and the ‘Zoes’, where films and pictures are combined into one clever image.

There are neat accessories, too, with a case that shows you the time through its aerated front, rather than simply hiding the whole screen.

If there’s a consistent complaint about the iPhone, it’s battery life. If there’s a consistent trend in mobile phones as a whole, it’s to ever bigger screens. With the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple addresses both those issues, and demonstrates that it may have taken its time but it can certainly play with the big boys. On the whole, the 6 Plus is the same as the iPhone 6 - scaled up, it adds various ways of making the most of its larger screen and slightly improves the camera. But the overriding question is simple: is it too big? In my view, no. The reasons to buy an Android phone have never been fewer.

Waterproof and dustproof, Sony’s latest Xperia mobile is a triumph of discrete design. But its real triumph is in taking the best bits of the Sony empire and packing them into one single handset: so there’s the ‘Triluminos’ display that provides a superb screen, there’s high resolution audio and there’s superb 4K video via a 20.7MP camera. Design-wise, nylon corners make this expensive handset less likely to break if you drop it. Unfortunately, the camera is prone to overheating, and the operating system is occasionally a little buggy. Both of these are likely to be fixed, but they’re imperfections in a device that looks like it should be better.

8) Samsung Galaxy Alpha

The slick, metal Galaxy Alpha. It’s not quite a flagship, say the South Koreans, but it is a beauty. Even if you’re not fetishistically attached to metal – HTC fans – it’s hard not to wonder what took Samsung so long. With a 4.7-inch screen, the Alpha is a more manageable size than the 5.5-inch monsters such as the S5 and Note 4 – this is a phone that is super slim (6.7mm), very light (115g) and generally manageable with one hand. A fast processor keeps it coping with everything you’re likely to throw at it. That small package necessitates a smaller battery but that doesn’t compromise performance – I found the battery lasted a day. There’s a decent camera, too. If there’s a hint of the iPhone about the design, this still feels like a distinctive Samsung product.
