NEW YORK (JTA) — Jewish scouting leaders say they are “overjoyed” after the Boy Scouts of America passed a resolution lifting a ban on gay youth.

A.J. Kreimer, the outgoing chairman of the Nation Jewish Committee on Scouting, said Friday the decision reached at the BSA’s national convention in Dallas on Thursday was “momentous.”

“Anything we can do to get more young people, especially Jewish youth, involved is a great day for Judaism and for scouting,” he said.

Members of the Boy Scouts of America’s national council passed the contested resolution by a majority vote of 61 percent.

NJCOS and other Jewish groups had been vocal in their support for lifting the ban.

(JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed the campaign of Jewish businessman Meyer Habib for a seat in the French parliament.

Habib is hoping to enter France’s National Assembly as the representative of French citizens living in Israel, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, the Vatican and San Marino.

“I have known Meyer Habib for many years and he is a good friend to me and to Israel,” Netanyahu said in French in a video posted on YouTube on May 20.

Standing next to Habib, Netanyahu continued in Hebrew: “He fights a lot for Israel, for public opinion and cares intensely about the Land of Israel and Jerusalem and he has helped me over the years deepen Israeli-French relations … We need to let him represent this bond in the best possible way. Go vote!”

The election — in which Israelis and Jews are considered favorites thanks to some 65,000 Frenchmen living in Israel, more than anywhere else in the constituency -– is scheduled to take place Sunday.

Habib is running against several candidates, including Istanbul resident Marie-Rose Koro, a Socialist. Jewish candidates include Valerie Hoffenberg, of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s UMP party, and Jonathan-Simon Sellem, a journalist living in Israel.

The vote was announced in February after the June 2012 election of Daphna Poznanski-Benhamou — another French Israeli — was disqualified due to campaign funding irregularities.

To run for parliament, Habib gave up his bid to become president of the CRIF umbrella group of the French Jewish community, where he currently serves as vice president. More than 170 CRIF delegates will elect a president on Sunday, the same day as the parliamentary election.

In the running for CRIF president are three prominent French Jews: Past CRIF president Roger Cukierman; one of CRIF’s regional delegates, François Guggenheim; and Arié Bensemhoun, president of the Jewish community of Toulouse.

The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities said that, despite recent revisions, the Church of Scotland’s report on Israel remains “unacceptable.”

(JTA) — The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities said that, despite recent revisions, the Church of Scotland’s report on Israel remains “unacceptable.”

The report, entitled “The Inheritance of Abraham,” was endorsed by the church’s general assembly Thursday in Edinburgh. It is a revision of an earlier text the church’s Church and Society Council published earlier this month and then withdrew amid Jewish condemnations of its assertion that Jews have no special claim to Israel. The report further said that Israel should be boycotted and that Western support for Israel is rooted in Holocaust guilt.

“The country of Israel is a recognised State and has the right to exist in peace and security,” the revised report said. “We reject racism and religious hatred. We condemn anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. We will always condemn acts of terrorism, violence and intimidation.”

But the report still rejects “claims that scripture offers any peoples a privileged claim for possession of a particular territory.” It further states that “those who remember the reality of apartheid first hand and the consequences of international campaigns on their own nation concur with proposals to consider economic and political measures involving boycotts, disinvestment and sanctions against the state of Israel focused on illegal settlements.”

The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, which offered a withering assessment of the first report, rejected the revision. Although “most of the excesses of language in the original report have been modified, the unacceptable underlying message remains unaltered,” the council said.

“For that reason, it is unlikely to be embraced by mainstream opinion in the Jewish community, and we do not consider that it will advance the cause of the peace in the Middle East that we all, Jews, Christians, and Muslims, so fervently pray for.”

(JTA) — Representatives of a pro-Israel media watchdog took CBS to task for a news segment about the plight of Christians in the Holy Land.

Activists from the Committe for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting, or CAMERA, “dominated” much of the annual shareholders meeting on Thursday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The activists said that CBS had failed to correct what they said were inaccuracies and distortions in a piece by “60 Minutes” correspondent Bob Simon.

“The failure of CBS News to take action on this matter remains astonishing and inexplicable,” CAMERA’s Talia Shulman Gold told company executives.

The segment, which aired a year ago, drew fire from Jewish groups for emphasizing settlement expansion and other Israeli policies as factors driving Palestinian Christians to emigrate. In his reporting, Simon also cited pressures from Palestinian Muslims.

CBS executives defended the network’s First Amendment rights and stood by the segment.

The meeting was otherwise filled with positive reports about company performance.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague, in a visit to Israel, said settlements have cost the country support in Britain and Europe.

(JTA) — British Foreign Secretary William Hague, in a visit to Israel, said settlements have cost the country support in Britain and Europe.

Hague, who met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, made the comments in an interview Friday with Sky News.

“Israel has lost some of its support in Britain and in other European countries over time — this is something I’ve often pointed out to Israeli leaders — because of settlement activity, which we condemn,” Hague said.

Earlier this week, Israel’s strategic affairs minister, Yuval Steinitz, questioned Britain’s friendship with Israel and said anti-Israel activity in Britain may be connected to anti-Semitism.

Steinitz told The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday that Israel’s relations with other Anglo nations were better than with Britain, where “some Israelis feel that there is some kind of double standard.”

Boycotts against Israel and other anti-Israel activities in Britain contain “some kind of disguised anti-Semitism,” Steinitz told the Telegraph.

On Friday, Hague said that efforts by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to jumpstart talks between Israel and the Palestinians may succeed.

“In spite of the difficulties, the time is right for peace and Secretary Kerry’s initiative can lead to a breakthrough,” Hague said after his meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres.

A lawmaker for the ultra-nationalist Jobbik party in Hungary said the Auschwitz death camp museum “may not reflect real facts.”

(JTA) — A lawmaker for the ultra-nationalist Jobbik party in Hungary said the Auschwitz death camp museum “may not reflect real facts.”

Tamas Gaudi-Nagy made the statement Thursday during a discussion in parliament on a proposal to facilitate visits by teenagers and young adults to the former Nazi camp in Poland.

The Hungarian news agency MTI reported that Gaudi-Nagy said the site “may not reflect the real facts of history,” and that schools should not be “forced to take up such an expensive venture.”

The statement drew condemnations from Hungary’s ruling party as well as from its leading Jewish group.

“Nobody has the right to question the Holocaust, the suffering and death of millions of people,” the leader of the ruling Fidesz party, Antal Rogan, said in a statement Thursday.

The Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities, or Mazsihisz, called on “democratic deputies in parliament” to reject Gaudi-Nagy’s remarks and also called on the House speaker “to initiate legal proceedings to restore the reputation of parliament.”

“Though the deputy did not openly deny the Holocaust, he made a sly suggestion that the memorials put up where several million victims were executed do not reflect the truth,” Mazsihisz said in its statement. “Gaudi-Nagy’s remarks have desecrated the memory of over 400,000 Hungarians who were exterminated there.”

Jobbik, Hungary’s third-largest party, has been termed “a neo-Nazi” party by Hungary’s Jewish watchdog on anti-Semitism, the Action and Protection Foundation, or TEV. Last year, one of its lawmakers, Marton Gyongyosi, said “it was time” that a list of Hungarian Jews be drawn up as they posed “a national risk,” though he later said he was referring only to Hungarians with Israeli passports.

(JTA) — Indonesians are criticizing the decision by an American rabbi’s foundation to honor their country’s president.

The decision by the Appeal of Conscience Foundation to honor President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with its World Statesman Award on May 30 has sparked street protests and strident criticism from local human rights activists, the Forward reported.

“He has laid down the legal infrastructure of the discrimination against religious minorities,” said Andreas Harsono, a researcher for Human Rights Watch based in Jakarta.

The Appeal of Conscience Foundation, an interfaith dialogue group focusing on human rights and religious freedom, was founded in 1965 by Rabbi Arthur Schneier, a Holocaust survivor and spiritual leader of the Park East Synagogue in Manhattan. Schneier is also the foundation’s president.

Human Rights Watch says that persecution of religious minorities has increased under Yudhoyono’s rule, the Forward reported.

In a statement, the Appeal of Conscience Foundation said the award is meant as “an encouragement to advance human rights, religious freedom and inter-religious cooperation.”

(JTA) — The Swiss government rejected a request to re-examine the number of Jewish refugees that Switzerland turned away during the Holocaust in light of research suggesting that it was lower than accepted accounts.

“A new committee would not necessarily yield more accurate figures than the ones reached” through previous inquiries, the Swiss Federal Council said in its reply published Thursday in Le Matin, a Swiss French-speaking daily, to a request by Swiss lawmaker Yvan Perrin to re-open the issue.

In his motion, Perrin cited research conducted by the French Nazi hunter and historian Serge Klarsfeld. In February, Klarsfeld he said that Swiss authorities turned away only 3,000 Jewish refugees during the Holocaust and not 24,500, as determined in 1999 by the Bergier report on Switzerland’s Holocaust-era record.

The Bergier commission did not possess information that specified whether the rejected refugees were Jewish, Klarsfeld said.

In January, a separate report by the German-language station SRF said the Swiss government was aware of German leader Adolf Hitler’s extermination plan and the existence of German concentration camps as early as 1942, and nonetheless refused entry to Jewish refuges.

Earlier this month, Swiss President Ueli Maurer apologized for neglecting to mention the turning away of Jewish refugees during a speech in January, in which he described Switzerland as “a land of freedom and justice” during a “dark era, thanks to a generation of brave men and women.”

“Not only what we say matters, but also what we don’t say,” Maurer said during an address before Jewish leaders on May 8. “ I would like to apologize for ignoring this aspect.”

A third of respondents to a survey of attitudes toward Israel in the Netherlands said they were now “more critical of Israel’s policies” than before.

THE HAGUE (JTA) — A third of respondents to a survey of attitudes toward Israel in the Netherlands said they were now “more critical of Israel’s policies” than before.

“The Dutch are divided on Israel,” read a summary of the survey which was filled out this month by 1,067 adults and published Tuesday by the Evangelistische Omroep, a group associated with the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system.

The survey showed young people in the Netherlands have an especially negative view of Israel. Nearly 20 percent of respondents aged 18-34 gave Israel the lowest score possible: 0-20 on a scale of 100. Older respondents gave Israel higher scores.

In total, 22 percent of respondents ranked Israel 20-40; 32 percent of all respondents ranked Israel in the 40-60 zone and 20.5 percent ranked it 60-80.

“About 15-25 percent are explicitly positive on Israel, another 15-25 percent are negative and in between is a pretty large group,” reads the 12-page survey conducted to mark Israel’s 65th anniversary.

The study also showed that Protestant Dutchmen — who accounted for 32.7 percent of all respondents –- have a more positive attitude toward Israel than Catholics, who comprised 47 percent of respondents. “Ten percent of Catholics have a very positive attitude to Israel compared to 30 percent of Protestants,” the survey said.

Though 41 percent of respondents said they had “a very negative view of Muslims, this does not mean that people are more understanding toward Israel,” the authors of the survey wrote.

Nearly two-thirds said Arabs and Jews are both responsible for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Seven percent said the Palestinians caused it while 11 percent blamed Israel.
