Carpenter Bee

noreply@blogger.com (JTenPhoto) — Fri, 21 Feb 2020 22:21:00 +0000

I was able to follow this Carpenter Bee around a small field up along the Mogollon Rim near Woods Canyon Lake. All things considered, he was very cooperative, which I attribute to the fact that it was early in the morning and still a bit chilly

Dale Chihuly Glasswork

noreply@blogger.com (JTenPhoto) — Sun, 28 Apr 2013 07:35:00 +0000

These were taken at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix a few years ago during an exhibition of the amazing glass sculptures of artist Dale Chihuly. The photos are a poor substitute for seeing the actual pieces, but they show a little of what you can expect to see when the artist returns to the Desert Botanical Garden November 10th of this year.

For more on Dale Chihuly, go to: http://www.chihuly.com/

Just to be a little different, I did a little enhancement on this last one.

Old Guy On Pier

noreply@blogger.com (JTenPhoto) — Fri, 25 Jan 2013 02:31:00 +0000

A dreary day.
The man sat alone with his tackle, the cold and the damp permeated his nether regions.
He continued to experiment with a plethora of bait and lures. Trying this one and that.
No fish would appear that day...

Great Egret Feeding

noreply@blogger.com (JTenPhoto) — Fri, 16 Mar 2012 20:32:00 +0000

I recently took a Arizona Highways photography workshop that concentrated on bird photography. I've had a little luck shooting birds, but I wanted to see how the pros do it, hence the class. The following photos were not taken at the workshop, but at a small neighborhood lake where I've been practicing.

The subject is a Great Egret that was quite intent on feeding, so he gave me some latitude as to how much of my presence he'd tolerate. I was pleased with my stalking skills, and fairly pleased with the results of the shoot.

My Little Visitor

noreply@blogger.com (JTenPhoto) — Thu, 26 Jan 2012 02:52:00 +0000

While doing stuff out on my workbench, I am joined my little friend Harold. Harold stops by often while I do the things one does at his workbench.

Sometimes he'll even stick nearby when I'm cutting stuff up with my saw.

I like Harold, he's a really nice bird.

My introduction to Light Painting

Breakfast at the Swallows

noreply@blogger.com (JTenPhoto) — Wed, 24 Aug 2011 16:47:00 +0000

A mother Barn Swallow feeds the little ones while I attempt exposure with and without flash. The nest was built on top of the barns light fixture (white), with the nest itself up under the eave (dark), which made it hard to find a middle ground for the best exposure. This was tough to do without scaring all concerned. This was the first time I'd had an opportunity like this, so I found it a little difficult to focus on what I was trying to do.

I gotta practice...

The photos below are of my two favorite critters.

Moose & Maggie T Pug.

(Plus one special guest)

Moose gives me the "How much longer?" look while I attempt a "studio" shot.

Wrapped in her favorite blanket, Maggie wakes from a midday nap.

Maggie enjoys her favorite bone. Note how she pretends she has an opposable thumb.

Stalking the elusive gull

noreply@blogger.com (JTenPhoto) — Wed, 10 Nov 2010 04:44:00 +0000

The gull walks, and I follow.

Singly and in groups, the gulls were everywhere.

Since I was having difficulties with birds in flight,

I tried to refocus my thoughts and shoot their little feet prints in the sand.

Some of the shots were taken while leaning forward and trying to balance the camera and me slightly over and behind the prints. This was awkward, uncomfortable, and in several shots; acrobatic as I pitched forward and twisted in mid air trying to avoid landing on my camera and/or face.

These were taken while visiting Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer, Michigan.

Horse Talk

noreply@blogger.com (JTenPhoto) — Sat, 02 Oct 2010 21:09:00 +0000

While hanging around looking for something interesting to shoot, I began to focus on a corral of horses who were about to be fed. After a couple minutes, I noticed that the horses seemed to congregate into what looked to be, several small groups (almost like little cliques). As I watched, I noticed a chocolate colored guy move toward this white guy and his clique. He approached the other horse and an equine conversation appeared to take place. At one point the white horse gave a raspberry to the other guy. As you can see, the chocolate horse took exception to the bilabial trill. The encounter ended abruptly as the food truck began its run.
