Not long ago I went to a CD release party for a band I have heard several times now. As I found out when I got there it was a CD release Party for two bands. About a Mile was the “Other Band” I had never heard them before that night and I had really showed up to support the other band. I was really surprised by About A Mile, from the time they took the stage I knew I was going to be writing this review. I am just sorry that it has taken me so long to do just that. About A Mile is made up of 3 brothers – Adam, Levi, and Luke. The name is taken from the Idea the Christ had to carry the Cross – About a Mile. I was lucky enough to get hold of a nice video camera and you can check out some of the video from that night and you can watch that below.

From the very beginning of the CD I am taken by the talent of these three brothers. With all First CD offerings, I don’t expect to be blown away. Talent is something that matures over time. While I wasn’t blown away I was surprised at just how enjoyable this CD is overall. With a good acoustic styling “About A Mile” lets you enjoy the music without feeling over-run by it. That is not to say that “Find yourself” is all lightness and rainbows. With their title track, “Find Yourself” the bands shows just a bit of the chops I saw in their live performance.

One thing that can be a downfall of this style of music is that the style itself can be rather narrow and I did find that several of the songs on the CD were similar to each other. I also noticed that while the guitarist and vocalist (Adam) is an incredibly talented guitarist (one go through the Cd will convince you of this) I feel that the CD is relying on his talent. This is not to say that the other brothers in the group, Levi and Luke are not talented, They are very talented in their own right, The Cd itself is a very guitar driven CD and i would of like to have heard more from the others in the way of Drum and Bass. this is something I believe is partly due to the youth of the members.

One of the things that always pleases me is that the music is overtly and un-ashamedly Christian. Even to the point of having a song on the CD called “Unashamed“. I took the time to transcribe a bit of the song so you can see for yourself.

Ill follow you where ever you may lead me
not afraid to be the servant I’ve become
now I stand alone before you in your grace
I want everyone to know I’m not ashamed

You’re the air that I’ve been breathing
The only truth that I’m believing
And I can’t live without you anymore!
I don’t want to hide the fact that I need you
Wanna be held in your arms let the world see
That I believe in Jesus!

I’m not ashamed!

Overall I have to say that this CD is one of the Strongest freshmen Indie Cd’s I have heard. I look forward to hearing what these three can accomplish as they mature and grow into the Gifts and talents that they clearly posses.

I am giving this Cd a 3.75 out of 5.0 on the Indie Scale. The Cd itself is well produced and the talent of the band are clear. While Find Yourself may not be on the “Most Played” section of my MP3 player the Cd is something I find myself rediscovering on the Player and enjoying anew each time.

I had an opportunity recently to see Kronicles live. I have to say that they did not disappoint with their live show. That being the case I also decided to grab a copy of their CD, Reset. Again, Kronicles did not disappoint. Here is some video from the live concert.

Video of Kronicles – I am a Man

There are a lot of really good elements to this CD and it’s mixed very well. It’s a solid alternative rock album with plenty of energy and emotion. Switch kicks things off with a hard edge to both the music and the vocals. My Dear comes across very heavy with an intense bassline that I really love. And I am A Man comes down like a hammer with great guitar work and thundering percussion. Silent has an ethereal feel from strings and keys before breaking into Last Time. Rediscover and Miracles are both ballads that round out the overall intensity of the CD.

The only thing I didn’t like about the CD was the way so many of the songs seemed to have the same sound to them. Not that they all sound the same but that the techniques used in each song lend to a sense of commonality among them. They “feel” the same and you might not notice that you’re listening to the next track until you’ve reached the end.

In any event, Reset by Kronicles is worth picking up. You may not listen to it until you’ve worn it out, but you’ll like throwing it on to give it a listen every so often.

I give it 3 and a half stars.

Last weekend my mom made some cinnamon rolls. Before putting them in the oven the pan was dropped and the cinnamon rolls got all twisted. She apologized so much. But somehow, seeing them in a not so ordinary state made them look even more appealing!

It’s hard to explain. We’ve all seen it. All been there, done that. We think things are in order but then seem to fall apart on us. We’ve got an ideal way in our minds which isn’t usually the way things turn out. The twists and turns are enough to drive us crazy, but there is a beauty to it all…

“Mack concentrated instead on staying to the walkway. As he rounded the trees, he saw for the first time a magnificent garden and orchard somehow contained within a plot of land hardly larger than an acre. For whatever reason, Mack had expected a perfectly manicured and ordered English garden. This was not that!

“It was chaos in color. His eyes tried unsuccessfully to find some order in this blatant disregard for certainty. Dazzling sprays of flowers were blasted through patches of randomly planted vegetables and herbs, vegetation the likes of which Mack had never seen. It was confusing, stunning, and incredibly beautiful.

“‘From above it’s a fractal,’ Sarayu said over her shoulder with an air of pleasure.

“‘A what?’ asked Mack absentmindedly, his mind still trying to grapple with and control the pandemonium of sight and the movements of hues and shades. Every step he took changed whatever patterns he for an instant thought he had seen, and nothing was like it had been.

“‘A fractal . . . something considered simple and orderly that is actually composed of repeated patterns no matter how magnified. A fractal is almost infinitely complex. I love fractals, so I put them everywhere.’

“‘Looks like a mess to me,’ muttered Mack under his breath.

“Sarayu stopped and turned to Mack, her face glorious. ‘Mack! Thank you! What a wonderful compliment!’ She looked around at the garden. ‘That is exactly what this is—a mess. But,’ she looked back at Mack and beamed, ‘it’s still a fractal, too.’”

Excerpt from The Shack, by William P. Young

Life is messy! A sopping, crowded, all-over-the-place kind of mess. I don’t think we’ll ever really be able to understand it. Sometimes we think in too much of a linear fashion. Straight path, front to back, the end. That’s not how it goes, though.

A book I read this summer, The Time Traveler’s Wife, caused me to realize how much in our lives is intertwined and comes full circle. The time traveler in the book lived a crazy life. There was himself in the present, and himself the time traveler. The author went back and forth between these scenes in his life. Yet by the end of the book all of the seemingly random events in his life made sense.

God somehow creates a divine order out of our messes. What we see as total chaos, the Lord sees as something beautiful and precious. Think of a small child who just woke up and their hair is tussled. It’s a precious thing. I think that’s how God views our lives. He’s got the order, the blueprint. All we need to do is trust and allow him to unravel things.

There are so many scenarios… A friend apologizing for the messiness of the house. Our own up-keep. But let us not get so caught up in appearances. Regardless of what’s going on, the most important thing to remember is…

God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Romans 8:28, NLT

God is ever in the process of untying our knots, ripping strongholds to shreds, removing our chains, and releasing us from the things that blind us to the Truth. It’s through this inner-working that we are made new creatures, alive and refreshed.

By the blood of the Lamb we are washed and made clean. By His grace we are enabled to simply trust. In the midst of whatever is going on we just need to trust that God has got it all under control.

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord.
Isaiah 55:8, AMP

And thank God for that.

Pause for a moment. Take a deep breath. Know that God’s got it all mapped out for you. Everything’s going to work out.

Keep going.

Your life is one of the most beautiful ever known.

“He has re-focused us and renewed our passion. We will not be moving forward with any other determination than to reach the youth as God allows us. Even if that means one show a year or 20 shows a month. Truly, whatever God allows, we will pursue.“~Eowyn

If you would like to book Eowyn in 2010 just write Russell at russell@deepwade.com Be ready for a live performance that’s honest and relevant, but of coarse one that will rock hard!

Nashville, Tenn., November 3, 2009 – Two-time Dove Award winning Paul Baloche releases his eighth collection of new worship songs, Glorious, today (Nov. 3) on Integrity Music amidst critical and peer acclaim. In addition to the CD, worship resources for Glorious include a print and digital songbook, CD trax and more.

Baloche’s peers, including Michael W. Smith, Israel Houghton and Martin Smith (Delirious?/CompassionArt), share their enthusiasm for Baloche and his new album as Worship Leader, Christianity Today, New Release Tuesday and other media offer critical acclaim:

“Paul Baloche is one of the most gifted writers I know,” says Michael W. Smith, who co-wrote with Baloche this year’s Dove Award winning song, “A New Hallelujah,” featured on Glorious. “He is an absolute joy to be with and his talent is immense. I’ve heard his songs performed literally all over the world. But most of all, I have been so blessed beyond measure to have been led by Paul in worship. Maybe one word to sum it up to describe my dear friend? – ‘Authenticity,’ which I believe the church and the world are starving for.”

“Paul Baloche has long been the standard by which other writers of worship music like myself strive to reach,” says Israel Houghton. “His ability to be profound yet accessible is unlike any other. This new project is loaded with those kind of songs.”

“Paul is the real deal. I’ve had the pleasure of working, writing and recording with him and his heart is made of pure gold,” says Martin Smith, Delirious? frontman and CompassionArt founder.

“Paul Baloche has done more than release a CD, he has fitted the Church with a full set list of prayers that will musically form the hearts of congregations for years to come…Baloche’s uniqueness has always flowed from an innate ability to speak the language of the heart and the language of heaven simultaneously.” – Worship Leader

“Widely recognized as one of worship music’s finest wordsmiths, Baloche should also become famous for his fine-tuned artistry. These songs are poised for church-wide acceptance and his artist career should benefit from Glorious’ A+ production and songs.” – Christianity Today Music.

“If you’ve liked past hit songs by Paul Baloche including ‘Open The Eyes Of My Heart,’ ‘Offering’ and ‘Your Name,’ then you’ll really enjoy Glorious…you need to add Glorious to your worship music collection.” – NewReleaseTuesday.com (Newreleasetuesday.com is also offering a free music download of the title track, “Glorious,” at this link.)

With an overall theme of intimacy with the Living God being reflected in Glorious, the album features songs co-written with Michael W. Smith, Brenton Brown, Meredith Andrews, Jason Ingram, Ben Gowell and Rita Baloche. Produced by Baloche and Gowell, the album also features the radio single, “Just To Be With You,” which is already garnering acclaim from radio programmers across the country.

Having served as the Worship Pastor at Community Christian Fellowship in Lindale, TX for 20 consecutive years, Baloche is regarded as one of the preeminent worship writers of the contemporary Church. He has written some of this generation’s most compelling worship songs, including “Open The Eyes of My Heart,” “Hosanna,” “Your Name,” “Above All,” “Offering,” “All The Earth Will Sing Your Praises,” “Our God Saves” and “Because of Your Love.” With 19 CCLI current Top 500 songs to his credit, his songs are literally sung by millions of people each week in churches around the world.

In addition to writing, recording, touring and serving as a worship pastor, Baloche has created a variety of instructional DVDs for worship leaders and musicians and has written a book, God Songs –How to Write and Select Songs for Worship. He is a contributing writer for both Worship Leader and Worship Musician magazines and a popular conference speaker, most recently serving as an instructor for Integrity Music’s “Deeper: The Worship Sessions” national seminars. Baloche is also a writer/artist for CompassionArt, a charity dedicated to seeing works of art generate income for the relief of suffering around the planet.

first off let me just say that I am no stranger to the guys of Third from First. I believe they were one of the first local bands I saw when I started to going to the shows at the NET outreach in butler. At the lat show I went to, which was a CD release Party for Third from First and About a Mile marked my fourth time seeing them perform live. Back in May I reviewed their previous Cd “The Beginning” and you can read that review here, but you’re not hear to read and old review, you are here to read a new review.

At first looks the CD was not what I expected. At 5 songs the CD sounded more like an EP Demo disc than a Full fledged album. This thought was was quickly set aside when I got to actually listen to the CD. With the shortest song coming it at almost 5 minutes and the longest one pushing 8 minutes, the CD is longer than you expect and filled with good music. I want to take a little time here to explain the name of the band since I believe that it will help you to understand the CD better. Steve Lowry, Lead Vocal explained to me that as Christians we need to put God first, others second and ourselves Third, so that makes us all Third from First. A sentiment I completely agree with. Here is Third from first playing their song Time live at the CD release Party.

The CD sounds professionally recorded and mixed, I mention this because with Indie Bands this is not usually the case. Having seen the band perform so many times I was aware of just how talented they all are as musicians and it is good to hear that reflected in the CD, Each of the songs on the Cd also stand on their own as individual songs. while the CD as a whole is without a doubt a Alt Rock Album the songs do not blend into each other. Likewise the CD still has the sound of the previous CD without sounding like just more of the same. I am pleased to end to find that this CD has neither of these weaknesses

I find myself comparing the CD to the many times I have seen the band play live and I am reminded about the one thing I found most striking during their live performance was that during the middle of the set, when the crowd was at its most lively and interactive the band just broke out into worship. They took all the energy in the room that was focused at them and directed it towards God. They do the same thing on the Album with “Belong to you”. The words of the song speak for themselves.

Take my heart
Take my mind
Take my will
Take my life
Take it all
Make me new
By your grace
I belong to you
River of life
pour down on me
I once was blind
But now I see
You took my hand
You called my name
In your flow
You drowned my shame

Overall “Time” is a rock solid album that if a bit longer I would have no problem putting it up against any of the popular big named bands. Third from first is clearly a band that should be playing on a much larger stage to much larger crowds. This is something I for one, expect to happen in the future. Until then however I am going to enjoy the concerts where I actually get to hang with the band and don’t have to watch from the cheap seats.

I’m giving “Time” 4 stars out of 5 with the only real minus being the length of the CD. Even with the longer songs, when the CD was over I found myself wanting a couple of more songs. As the second CD from “Third from First” I do find that it is a clear step up from their freshman CD and the songs show a good bit of maturity. You will be hearing more from the band on the podcast in the future and with the CD running at only 7$ on the bands store it is a no-brainer on picking up some good music.
