“And it’s confusing that if you ask a random person on the street about climate change, then they’ve been given five different versions of why it’s not even an issue. So who is causing the confusion and why isn’t it even a priority?”

Maybe there just wasn’t a suitable runway nearby for a private plane but Will.i.am’s helicopter arrival at a climate event in the UK is getting more play than his meeting with Dr. Myles Allen. Dr. Allen met with Will.i.am to discuss the weatherathome project which uses the spare processing power and collected data from thousands of volunteered remote computers to make future weather pattern predictions. The Guardian reported that the meeting went well but they also had to question the helicopter.

In May 2010, we posted an article about eco-Hollywoodians and how they tell us about how to live ‘green’ in a “do as I say but not as I do” way. Not only is their message lost on regular people but the way the preach it borders on offensive. Will.i.am obviously didn’t think helicoptering into this meeting on climate change was that big of a deal or he wouldn’t have done it but in a way, it’s kind of like cluelessly bringing a meat lovers pizza to a PETA event.

Now don’t get me wrong, celebrities like Will.i.am can make an appearance, or just tweet one, and have more of a positive effect on an issue than the average person. But for futures, please don’t point to our “confusion” when it comes to understanding climate change when it was you that showed up in a helicopter.
We’re very simple at Jubbling. Where most people see a wingsuited Gary Connery jumping out of a helicopter into a stretch of empty cardboard boxes in the video, Jubbling sees an opportunity for Amazon.co.uk to score some free packaging. We just hope the wingednut didn’t crush too many.
Avoiding bottled water should be easy - why do we keep complicating it?

“Although the U.S. has among the safest tap water in the world, the U.S. remains the largest market for bottled water. The next two, in order, are China and Mexico, both countries in which tap water is either unavailable, or typically not considered safe to drink.

Charles Fishman, FastCo.Exist, Americans Guzzling More Bottled Water Than Ever

Choosing to pay for water stored in a plastic bottle for who knows how long over getting it from the tap is absolutely nuts. And trying to make the argument that buying bottled water over soda doesn’t jive either because safe and clean soft drinks are not freely running through our taps in the same way as water.

In 2011, we unfortunately reversed a 3-year downward trend and consumed more plastic enclosed water than ever – 29.2 gallons per person based on data from the Beverage Marketing Corp (BMC). According to the BMC, people choose bottled water because they consider it “convenient, appealing and also healthy.” Sounds like we’re getting suckered into a marketing message.

Would you pay $1.29 for somebody to run into your house or a restaurant to fill a reusable water bottle for you? Probably not but we will thoughtlessly shell the same amount of money to buy bottled water.

Crowdsourced apps that tell you drinking fountain locations are neat but are not the solution. And gimmicky $29 stainless models like 999Bottles, that let you count how many plastic ones you avoid, aren’t the solution either.

Reversing the reversal.
The solution is simple: just don’t buy bottled water. We’ve complicated the issue of not buying bottled water so much that we keep coming up with unnecessary alternatives like fountain apps and the over-priced 999Bottles. If you have a personal drinking container – mini-marts, restaurants and grocery stores will let you refill your water bottle using their fountain drink dispensers at no charge. And if you don’t have a container, drink sink water out of your hand.

Think about it, we’re talking about clean water that is more available in the US than public restrooms. We don’t put on our Depend brand adult diapers every morning in fear of not finding a public toilet. We trust in the fact that if we have to go, we will find one. Finding and consuming clean drinking water should be viewed the same uncomplicated way.

So if you need to drink some water, don’t play chess with the idea of finding an un-plastic source. Free, clean and safe drinking water is available everywhere in the US and if you’re without your stainless reusable bottle, drink it out of your hand. [FastCo.Exist]

Art and Jubbling don’t mix well. Especially when the intention of the art is to provoke while consuming in a way that runs counter to its supposed green message. Thankfully, we’ve found two examples of art that we do agree with.

Ben Long – The Great Travelling Art ExhibitionThe first is artist Ben Long of the UK and “The Great Travelling Art Exhibition”. His supplies: A finger and a cup of water. His canvas: The grime covered rear doors of commercial trucks. By completing his “free-roaming” art on the back of moving vehicles, Mr. Long does not need to display his work in a gallery so he doesn’t need financial support to show his work. Little did I know but my kids were burgeoning artists too when they used their fingers to write “Dad Stinks” in the grime on the back of my car. Included in this exhibit is Andy Warhol’s “Invisible Sculpture” (empty pedestal) and Tom Friedman’s “1000 Hours of Staring” (blank piece of paper). The exhibition runs from June 12 – August 5, 2012. Probably the best feature of this exhibition is that if you are unable to attend, you can probably duplicate some of the art you missed in your own home.
Due To Climate Change, Dwarf Plants May Be Food For Future 'Mini' Humans.

Back in March 2012, Popular Science posted “Hot Weather Makes Mammals Smaller, So Will Global Warming Make Us Shrink?” The article discusses how 56 million years ago, during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) phase, horses shrank in size when global temperatures increased by 5 to 10 degrees due to an increase of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Going further, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Michigan, Philip Gingerich, joked in the article about our future climate change and stated that “we’re going to be walking around 3 feet tall if we keep going the way we’re going.” Basically, next-humans will have to become smaller and subsist on fewer resources in order to adapt to our warming climate.

Now here’s the part where Laverne, meets Shirley.

Just in time to feed the petite-humans of the warmer future, Gizmag posted, “Dwarf plants could reduce demands for water, fertilizer, nutrients and pesticides.” The article is about the work of Assistant Professor of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture, Burkhard Schulz, and how he discovered a way to treat plants with a cheap and widely available fungicide, propiconazole, that will keep them small in size without affecting their output. Not only would the treated, smaller plants need less fertilizer, water and space but they could also be sturdier due to their small size and ability to resist the weather.

So thank you wee-plants. Wee-humans of the future owe you a solid.
blk. Mineral Water: Bottled Water With Soil Supplement Added?

Normal bottled water looks like and is arguably the same water you can get from the tap. So why buy it? Now, how do you get consumers to think your bottled water is different? blk. beverages figured it out. They added fulvic acid trace minerals to their blk. brand mineral water that naturally turned their spring water black and made it different.

Fulvic acid trace minerals are organic matter and are a major component of coal, peat and soil. Pure Fulvic Minerals describes fulvic trace minerals:

“Trace minerals are an essential part of any diet. Unfortunately, many people fail to get these much-needed nutrients from their everyday diet. All-natural foods often lack the nutrients we need since, modern farming techniques have brought these minerals to the surface, where they are washed away.

Sounds like dirt to me. So maybe the best way to duplicate and not purchase blk. bottled mineral water is to fill your stainless water bottle with tap water and add some dirt. I don’t recommend going this route and despite the cool packaging, I don’t recommend jumping to buy blk. bottled mineral water either. [Laughing Squid]

The basic idea behind Jubbling is to help people find ways to consume less and reuse more. Burning House by Carrie Schneider is not a good example of Jubbling. For the Burning House series, Ms. Schneider photographed the building and torching of 15 lookalike house type structures over two years so it would appear that it was one non-stop burn through every season. The one positive is that she didn’t pitch Burning House as a ‘green’ statement about the lack of affordable housing or dwindling resources. But maybe in hindsight, she could’ve built one house, photographed it over two years and Photoshopped in the flames and smoke. Heck, she could’ve Photoshopped in the seasons too but that wouldn’t be considered art and that’s why I’ll never get it.

Florence, a nurse shark at the Birmingham National Sea Life Centre, had a near death experience with a rusty fish hook that required surgery to remove. Ever since the operation, Florence has moved down the food chain and flipped her diet away from fish and now prefers veggies. She’s such a strict vegetarian that her handlers have to sneak the protein she needs into her cucumbers and lettuce so she’ll eat it.

Florence may be teased and ostracized by the other sharks for her vegan ways but she can always get inspiration from Bruce of Finding Nemo fame. He made going veggie work and that’s why I have no doubt that she’ll eventually be fine in her own leathery skin.

MoMA PS1, a NY based institution dedicated to promoting contemporary art, wanted a to install something temporary at their Queens location that would provide shade, seating and water during summer 2012. They decided on Wendy ‘who’ was designed by architecture firm HWKN. Spiky Wendy is 45 ft. tall and sits in 70 ft. square scaffolding system. ‘She’ is programmed to blast cool air and water but her most hyped feature is that she’s covered in fabric treated with titania nanonparticles that will absorb 260 cars worth of airborne pollutants . From the HWKN/Wendy web page:

Wendy does not play the typical architecture game of ecological apology – instead she is pro-active.

First it was art and now it’s architecture and I just don’t get it. I understand the shade and bursts of cool mist Wendy will dole out in the MoMA PS1 Queen’s courtyard but the bizarro eco-message seems disingenuous when it comes from a temporary, 45′ x 70′ structure. Sorry Wendy – it’s you and not me this time. You definitely seem to be playing the typical ecological apology game and I don’t think it’s going to work out between us. It’s called TXU Energy Free Nights and the only catch is that you have to consume it during off-peak hours between 10pm and 6am.

What can you do between 10pm and 6am?

Laundry

Run dishwasher

Charge mobile devices

Re-charge electric vehicle

Get ready for work/school

Jubbling is all about consuming less and in a way, TXU Energy’s Free Nights is just shifting energy consumption. But at the very least, it will get people to be aware of the energy their consuming during the day and probably a little more apt to cut it back.
