Surveys show that an estimated 3.7 billion minutes are spent interacting through social networks each day, and traffic in social media accounts for 22 percent of the total time spent on the web. Because this works out to one in every 4.5 minutes online, company websites are no longer sufficient as a standalone solution.

A business without a fully developed social presence in social media is at a serious disadvantage when it comes to increasing market share and retaining current customers.

Social Engagement

Engaging customers has always been considered to be a solid business strategy. However, the modes of engagement have drastically shifted over the past decade. Since the advent of social media, the majority of online content about a business is no longer sourced from the business itself. Approximately 70 percent of company content is now generated by individuals, which means that the public is now in control over its own perception of businesses.

Businesses must take to social media and join the conversations started by others. In addition, a company can use its social business profiles to start new conversations that frame its products and services in a positive light.

Productivity and Sharing

Social networking is not only good for engaging clients but also for engaging employees. Many companies use social networks to keep up with employees while they are on duty so that meetings can be scheduled. Social networks can also be used by employees to let others know that they are busy with clients or other pressing matters.

Without social business, many companies suffer from a lack of communication.

Some may have IT systems that are incompatible between different departments while others may have departments away from the central office. Customer service departments benefit from social networks in that they can be used to share solutions to common issues, and sales departments can use them to share information about products and pricing.

Businesses are connected to consumer sentiment more than ever. Taking full advantage of this connectivity requires using the best tools available for the job, and a social presence management solution has to fill that role.

Social business networking can help a company connect not only with its employees but also with its customers and partners. By using a combination of blogs, wikis, networks and RSS feeds, it can establish and foster the relationships that are so vital to its success.

Social media might work less effectively if fewer people spent so much of their time connected to smartphones, tablets and laptops.

However, this is not the case. We live in an era when few people leave home without some means of establishing Internet connectivity, and social media has become the most efficient way to reach them.

What Social Networking Can Do for You

When considering the benefits of social networking, it’s important to realize one salient fact: Concerning any particular business or brand, about 70 percent of what you’ll find on the Internet is public-driven. There’s a conversation going on. It’s been taking place for years, and if your business is to succeed, participation is vital to maintaining your control.

The most successful companies use social networking to:

Engage in relationship marketing to attract potential customers.

Build a pathway between themselves and interested Internet users.

Make use of existing networking sites to better understand and get a jump on consumer needs.

Keep tabs on what customers are saying about the business, the product and the service.

Respond quickly and openly to consumer complaints, turning disgruntled patrons into loyal supporters.

Internal Networking Can Assist Your Employees

The in-house implementation of social media can be just as beneficial. When away from their desks or meeting with clients, the use of such techniques as microblogging will allow employees to keep in touch with home base. The internal use of social business networking obviates a company’s need to invest in compatible IT systems since its workers are already able to access these media on the Internet.

Social media can also enable collaboration between two companies.

The resulting boost in efficiency can have nothing but positive effects on a company’s bottom line.

It is no longer possible to deny the interconnectedness of the modern world. Ignoring it can adversely affect the health of any business. However, the intelligent application of social business media and relationship marketing will not only garner happy customers and boost efficiency; it will also aid in ensuring your company’s success in years to come.

According to this infographic below, that would be a resounding YES! It’s scary to think how many of these we’re guilty of – how about you?

Jugnoo is all about helping to grow your business using all the social media platforms your potential customers are likely to use.

To do that, those of us who help bring you tools like Jugnoo’s Social Dashboard and our social media analytics tools are reliant on the interfaces (or APIs) that social networks like Twitter and Facebook provide to other software developers.

Open social-network platforms obviously help companies like us to provide you with great value-added services, by extending these networks’ platforms and analyzing data and statistics across all of these networks. But these platforms also have some restrictions.

Often these limits are intended to prevent abuse by a single user or developer, which is a legitimate concern for any large-scale Web application. However, in many cases they’re also set up to protect the interests of the company behind the social network and limit tools deemed to be competitive with what the network provides itself.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, of course – they’re out to generate revenue like we are. But these choices sometimes serve to stifle the collaboration that can – and should – occur between companies, to help provide a better experience for various categories of users with many different use cases.

Twitter’s Your Friend. Mostly.

Twitter, for instance, has – up to this point – offered a very open platform that has allowed third-party software developers to develop native desktop clients and mobile apps, while Twitter Inc. focused on the Web interface and backend infrastructure.

Over time, however, Twitter has brought more of the consumer-facing development in-house, even buying out some of the early third-party developers and creating official apps for different platforms.

More recently, Twitter announced changes to their platform which make clear that Twitter wants greater control over its platform – including how Tweets are displayed on other clients, and how many users can use certain types of third-party clients.

Obviously these changes have required certain adjustments on our end (with a few more are still to come), and we do have some concerns about the possibility of further changes down the road, and how they may restrict the ability of developers to continue to provide enhanced user experiences.

For the time being, however, on the whole we believe that value-added tools including Jugnoo, which focus on social analytics and social CRM, are consistent with the roadmap for the Twitter platform.

Moreover, the changes that have been announced should not impact your experience significantly, and might end up being beneficial in some ways.

Of course, all of this points to the difficulties that developers face when trying to create comprehensive tools connecting all of your social networks.

Ch.. Ch… Ch… Changes

Even with the changes I’ve just outlined, Twitter will still have arguably the most comprehensive API among the major social networks. The current APIs for Facebook and LinkedIn, for instance, provide few if any ways to manage your connections or inbox.

If you want to like a page on Facebook, or send a private message to another user, we have no choice but to direct you to the appropriate network’s main website. Those choices are, of course, the prerogative of the network providers.

We’re sure they have, at least from their perspective, good reasons to impose these restrictions. On the other hand, for those users who choose to use value-added tools like Jugnoo to manage their social networks, it obviously leads to a less-than-ideal user experience.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of the challenges that us developers sometimes face when building the Jugnoo Social CRM platform that many of you use every day.

Please feel free to reach out to us through our support site if there are features you’d like to have added or see improved in the Social Dashboard or any other part of our platform.

We can’t guarantee we’ll satisfy every request, but hopefully this post will give a better sense of why this may be the case.

From the Sh*t Girls Say video series, to Big Bird, binders and bayonets images created during the recent U.S. presidential debates, Internet memes have become an extremely popular way to influence and participate in social discourse and pop culture.

There have been a lot of articles written lately about what it means for a brand to “memejack” or hitch a ride on a popular meme to raise awareness and associate your product with a cultural idea that has spread virally.

How memes can help or hinder your marketing efforts

A lot of meme marketing success relies on timing and execution. When used properly, memes can help a brand to resonate with a particular audience, making its personality seem more humorous, playful or youthful in nature. When done wrong, the joke can turn very quickly on your brand and potentially damage your company’s reputation.

Even worse, a brand could get innocently dragged into a meme, forcing companies to react quickly to control the narrative.

Below is a look at some recent meme marketing hits, misses and innocent bystanders of 2012.

When a marketer hits it out of the park

A ‘memenouncement’: Rather than issue a press release in May 2012, SEOmoz, an SEO software company, used a series of memes (with images of the Dos Aquis “most interesting man in the world” character, Willy Wonka and Jean Luc Picard) to illustrate its recent success in raising $18 million in series B funding. Check out the full memenouncement here which received a lot of positive reviews.

Memevertising: Often, viral images or YouTube videos become memes and inspire marketers to create ads that resonate with the message. A recent example is Virgin Mobile’s Success Kid campaign which ran earlier this year. The company did a great job tying the marketing message to the meme which represents either “success or frustration,” according to KnowYourMeme.com.

When good memes go bad

Poor timing or taste: Some brands are often just too late to the meme marketing party. For example, there were hundreds of parodies created of the Sh*t Girls Say video series that launched in late 2011/early 2012. The brands that followed the trend early on got lots of positive reactions from their customers and followers (like this video for Sanuk Footwear). Those that posted videos much later, or didn’t quite hit the mark, seemed either offensive or caused Sh*t People Say fatigue. This parody video says it all.

Mixed messages: Earlier this year, McDonalds tried to create its own meme and get people to share nostalgic stories about Happy Meals with the Twitter hashtag #McDStories. Unfortunately, as Forbes puts it, the hashtag became a “bashtag,” where many people used the opportunity to air their customer service complaints and other grievances about the fast-food restaurant chain.

When your brand is just an innocent bystander

Amazon and Avery binders:Shortly after U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney mentioned in the second televised debate (this past October) that he had been given “binders full of women” to hire for his cabinet when serving as governor of his state, fake customer reviews started popping-up on Amazon.com product pages for Avery binders.

While many of the jokes about binders were hilarious, it’s tough to say whether the reviews helped or hurt the brand’s reputation. According to this article, the company’s stock price closed lower on the NYSE on the days following the debate. However, the company reacted a shortly after the hoax by posting a joke on its Facebook page, saying “we’re hearing a lot about binders today!”

This tongue-in-cheek comment garnered lots of likes and showed that the company was being “good sports” about the incident.

These are just a few examples to get you thinking about how meme marketing could work for your business. Do you have any best practices to share? Please post them below.
