Paddleboarding and Kayaking on Jura – What You Need to Know Before You Go

The waters around Jura are stunning. On a calm day, the Sound of Jura is flat, clear and irresistible – and increasingly, visitors are arriving with paddleboards and kayaks to explore the coastline from the water. We love seeing people out there. But we also see the rescues, and there have been several in recent seasons.

This post is written with local knowledge and with the Coastguard’s own safety guidance in mind. Please read it before you head out.

Where people launch on Jura

The most popular spots are Corran Sands, the village beach at Craighouse, and the beaches stretching north of the village towards the school. All are accessible, relatively sheltered on calm days, and beautiful. Ronald also hires pedal boards in the village if you don’t have your own.

The Small Isles – a word of caution

The Small Isles just off Craighouse look tempting and on a calm day they’re very achievable. But be aware – once you pass those islands you are into the main Sound of Jura. It is wider, more exposed, and carries boat traffic including the Jura Passenger Ferry. Wind and tide conditions change significantly once you’re out there. What felt manageable on the way out can become very difficult on the way back. Know your limits before you commit.

The wind problem

Paddleboards are extremely susceptible to wind. A light offshore breeze that barely registers on the beach can push you steadily out to sea faster than you can paddle back. Always check the wind direction before launching – not just the speed. An onshore wind is your friend. An offshore wind is not.

Check the forecast at the Met Office or on Windy.com before you go. Tides matter too – check easytide.admiralty.co.uk for local tide times.

Before you launch – the checklist

• Always use a leash. If you fall off, your board is your best chance of survival – don’t let it drift away from you.
• Wear a personal flotation device. Make sure you can move freely while wearing it.
• One person per board. Do not share a board, particularly with children.
• Take your phone in a waterproof case. If you get into trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
• Tell someone your plans – where you’re going and when you expect to be back. This is not optional on Jura. Mobile signal is patchy once you’re on the water.
• Don’t go alone if you can help it. If you do, make absolutely sure someone onshore knows your plans.
• Check your equipment before you launch.

If something goes wrong

Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. They are available 24 hours a day and would always rather you called than didn’t.

Stay with your board. It keeps you afloat and makes you visible from the air and sea.

Don’t exhaust yourself trying to paddle against wind or tide. Conserve energy, stay calm, and call for help.

Jura is a remote island

This isn’t said to put you off – it’s said because it matters. The nearest lifeboat can take up to 45 minutes to an hour to reach you, depending on tides and weather conditions. That is a long time in cold water. Taking a few simple precautions costs nothing and could save your life.

Corryvreckan – experienced kayakers only

The Gulf of Corryvreckan at the north end of Jura is the third largest whirlpool in the world. It should only be attempted by experienced, well-equipped kayakers who understand tidal streams and have the skills to handle fast-moving, unpredictable water. It is not a casual paddle. If you are in any doubt, go by boat with a local guide instead – Jura Boat Tours run trips to the whirlpool and know these waters well.

Get out on the water. It’s one of the best ways to experience this island. Just do it safely.

The Isle of Jura isn’t trying to be a wellness destination. There’s no smoothie bar, serving açai bowls overlooking the Paps!

What it does have is space, silence, and a handful of people who’ve figured out how to help you decompress using the nature and wildnerness of the island to heal.

If you want to get unstuck – physically, mentally, whatever – then there are some good options here. Here’s what’s actually available.

Wood-Fired Mobile Sauna on the Coast

Bothan Jura Wild Sauna is a mobile wood-fired horsebox sauna that sets up at different coastal spots around the island. One week it’s at Big Corran with the Paps looming behind you, the next it’s at Craighouse harbour or tucked into a beach at the retreat. 

Sessions are capped at 5 people even though the sauna can seat 7.

You can book as a local member, or grab a single session for £15 if you’re visiting. Private group bookings are £75 for an hour – good for birthdays, hen dos, or just wanting the sauna to yourselves.

The location changes weekly depending on weather, permissions, and what else is happening.

Hot Tubs With a View

Bothan Jura Retreat has Swedish wood-fired hot tubs tucked into the landscape with views of the Paps. They’re not the electric plug-in kind – you light a fire underneath, wait for it to heat, then sit in properly hot water watching the weather roll across the mountains.

The hot tubs are part of the retreat’s three self-catering properties (Mrs Leonard’s Cottage, The Black Hut, The Rusty Hut), so you need to be staying there to use them. It’s the kind of setup where you can spend an entire evening moving between hot tub, cold barrel, sauna, and pizza oven without seeing another soul.

If you’re the type who needs to be doing something constantly, this will drive you insane. If you’re the type who’s forgotten how to sit still, it’s perfect.

Yoga 

Yoga for All Abilities

Philippa McCallum runs weekly yoga classes on Jura – at the Care Centre or as pop-up beach sessions – for people of all abilities. She’s particularly focused on chair-based yoga for injury recovery and mobility issues, and livestreams all her classes so people on remote parts of the island (or stuck on Islay) can join in.

Her approach combines ancient yoga philosophy with practical anatomy knowledge. If you’re after crystal healing and chakra alignment, this probably isn’t for you. If you want to move freely without pain and come away with a yoga glow, it is.

Massage, Acupuncture & Nervous System Support

Philippa is a registered Occupational Therapist, Massage Therapist, and Acupuncturist offering clinically-informed health and wellness appointments. Treatment sessions include bodywork assessment, acupuncture, dry needling, massage, clinical cupping, and ear candling. She’s also a specialist in Sensory Integration and nervous system support – particularly for women over 40 experiencing burnout or chronic stress.

Sessions are held in her treatment space in Craighouse, though bespoke services can be arranged elsewhere depending on availability and need. Get in touch to experience what she calls “highly professional and truly special Hebridean healing.”

Forest Bathing (Actually Slowing Down)

Faye runs Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing) sessions through Jura’s temperate rainforest. If you’ve never done it, forest bathing is basically a very slow guided walk where you’re encouraged to notice things – textures, sounds, seasonal changes – at a pace that makes normal walking feel frantic.

Faye’s a trained practitioner but also an artist and dancer, so her sessions weave in movement and creativity rather than sticking to rigid scripts. You’ll sit on blankets, do gentle meditation prompts, maybe forage a bit, and engage with seasonal “invitations” – small practices that tune you into what’s happening in the woodland that day.

She uses a singing bowl for gentle timekeeping and brings natural objects she’s found on Jura (like short-eared owl feathers) to ground the sessions in the island’s specific landscape. She prepares for weeks beforehand – walking the route, connecting with the trees and soil – but leaves space for things to shift on the day.

The goal is slowing down and paying attention without performance or achievement. If that sounds like exactly what you need right now, you’re probably right.

Reiki 

Yvonne and Denise in Knockrome are setting up Jura Natural Healing – trained Reiki practitioners offering sessions on the island. If you’ve never tried Reiki, it’s a hands-on (or hands-hovering) energy healing technique. You lie down fully clothed, they work through a series of hand positions on or above your body, and the goal is to shift whatever’s stuck – stress, pain, exhaustion, nervous system dysregulation.

Some people feel warmth, tingling, or emotional release during sessions. Some just fall asleep. Some feel absolutely nothing in the moment but report sleeping better or feeling less anxious for a week afterwards. It’s one of those modalities you either respond to or you don’t – there’s no predicting it.

If conventional treatments aren’t touching whatever’s going on with you, Reiki’s worth trying. At worst, you’ve had an hour lying down in a quiet room. At best, something shifts that hasn’t shifted in months.

Why Jura Works for This

Here’s the thing about wellness on Jura: it works because the island forces you to slow down anyway. There’s one road, no phone signal in half the places, and if you’re waiting for the ferry you learn patience whether you want to or not.

The wellness offerings here aren’t trying to extract you from normal life and put you in a bubble for a weekend. They’re just giving you tools to engage with where you are – whether that’s a wood-fired sauna on a storm-battered beach, a hot tub overlooking mountains, or a very slow walk through ancient woodland.

It’s not polished. It’s not corporate. It’s not trying to sell you a lifestyle brand. It’s just a handful of people who’ve figured out how to help you decompress on an island that’s already doing half the work.

JamDram’s crowdfunding campaign needs your support

Life on a remote Scottish island means making your own entertainment. With 258 people, one road, and unpredictable ferries, Jura doesn’t have theatres, art galleries, or youth clubs. What we do have is creativity, community spirit, and JamDram – our amateur dramatics society that’s brought four productions to the island since 2022.

But there’s one problem: we don’t have a proper stage.

The Pallet Platform Problem

For every production, volunteers spend hours building a makeshift stage from pallets and an old dance platform. It’s wobbly, time-consuming, and frankly a bit dodgy. In our most recent show, around 25 islanders – that’s 10% of Jura’s population – took part both on and off stage. Our young people are running lighting and sound, discovering confidence they didn’t know they had, and learning skills that simply aren’t available elsewhere on the island.

They deserve better than pallets.

The Campaign

We’re raising £8,000 for a portable stage made of modular 1-metre sections. It can be configured to any size, transported easily between islands, and will be available for hire by any community group across Jura and Islay.

Where We Are Now

In just over a week, we’ve raised £3,200 (40% of our target) from 128 incredible supporters. But we need 473 more people to pledge just £10 each in the next 12 days to make this happen.

With 3,500 people on Islay and 258 on Jura, that’s only 16% of our combined islands. If you’ve ever visited Jura, loved Scottish islands, or believe in supporting remote communities, this is your chance to make a real difference.

Why This Matters

My 11-year-old daughter Alba has a part in our next production. On Jura, we make our own culture and creativity because there’s nowhere else to go. JamDram is where island children build confidence, learn teamwork, and discover they’re braver than they thought.

A portable stage isn’t just equipment. It’s telling our young people their creativity matters – that even on Scotland’s remotest islands, culture thrives.

But we can’t do it alone. We need the wider world to step up.

Exciting news as Jura establishes independent tourism marketing and embraces a bright future for island hospitality

The new year brings significant developments for tourism on Jura. Following a community meeting in December with Councillor Dougie McFadzean – attended by island businesses, Jura Community Council, and Jura Development Trust – we’re establishing our own independent tourism organisation to market and promote our remarkable island.

A Community Decision

Over 40 tourism businesses and services across Jura are now working together under our island’s own destination marketing banner. From accommodation providers and activity operators to our distilleries, working estates, hospitality venues, artists, and makers – we’re building something that reflects Jura’s unique character and serves our community’s vision for sustainable tourism.

The initiative has strong community backing from Jura Community Council, Jura Development Trust, island businesses, and local councillors – along with partnership support from VisitScotland and AITC. It’s a collaborative effort that reflects both community priorities and regional tourism cooperation.

What Independent Tourism Development Means

Having our own tourism identity means we can:

• Market Jura authentically – Promoting what makes our island special, from wildlife and wilderness to whisky heritage and warm welcome
• Pursue appropriate opportunities – Accessing funding and partnerships suited to our island’s scale and priorities
• Build direct relationships – Working with VisitScotland, Argyll & Bute Council, Wild About Argyll, Holiday West Highland, and regional partners
• Keep community at the heart – Ensuring tourism development benefits residents and visitors alike, protecting what we value while sharing what we love

The Groundwork Is Already Done

The good news? Much of this work is already underway. This website – isleofjura.scot – has been quietly building Jura’s online presence for the past year, and now receives over 4,500 visits monthly from people planning trips to our island.

We’ve established partnerships with key players including Wild About Argyll (whose excellent regional marketing reaches 80,000+ visitors), Holiday West Highland magazine (distributed across ferry routes and accommodation), and direct links from VisitScotland’s Jura pages.

The infrastructure works. Now we’re formalising the organisation behind it.

Structure and Partnerships

We’re establishing the tourism group as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in early 2026. This structure provides proper governance, transparent reporting, and community accountability while keeping our focus where it belongs – on Jura’s benefit.

Key partnerships in place:

Argyll & Isles Tourism Co-operative (AITC) – We’ve joined this influential regional body, and AITC CEO Cathy Craig will visit Jura in February to meet with businesses and discuss collaboration opportunities.

Argyll & Bute Third Sector Interface (TSI) – Supporting our CIC setup and ensuring we’re structured properly from the start.

VisitScotland – Regional Director David Adams McGilp has offered ongoing support and strategic advice as we develop.

Argyll & Bute Council – Councillor Dougie McFadzean champions Jura’s tourism development and has committed to helping however he can.

Immediate priorities for 2026:
