Getting to Jura via Port Askaig – Essential travel Information 2026

If you’re travelling to Jura via Port Askaig this summer, there are two significant changes you need to know about before you travel.

Port Ellen has closed until 2029

Port Ellen on Islay closed on 2 June 2026 for major upgrades and modernisation by CMAL and will remain closed until 2029. All CalMac services to Islay now operate via Kennacraig to Port Askaig only. This means considerably more traffic, longer queues and potential delays at Port Askaig for the foreseeable future. Please allow significantly more time than usual when travelling through the port.

Why Port Askaig is busier than usual

With Port Ellen closed, Port Askaig is now the sole point of vehicular access to Islay. At the same time, SSEN are carrying out significant infrastructure works at the port itself to support vessel operations, affecting marshalling lanes and access from the main road. A no parking and no waiting restriction is in place on both sides of the A846 for 450 metres from the slipway. Please note this does not affect the Islay-Kennacraig or Jura mustering areas.

A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) is in place for up to 18 months, with a permanent Traffic Regulation Order likely to follow given the anticipated length of the works.

Navigating Port Askaig – Jura travellers

Our annotated aerial photo above shows exactly where to queue for the Jura ferry at Port Askaig. Both CalMac ferries and the Jura wee ferry use the same side of the port. Follow signs for the Jura Queue and approach with caution. Marshals are on site to assist.

Practical tips

Allow extra time – significantly more than you would normally. Book your CalMac ticket online in advance even if you’re a foot passenger. Check in at least 30 minutes before departure for vehicles and 10 minutes for foot passengers. Late check-in may result in your space being reallocated. Always check the CalMac service status page before travelling as disruption is more likely during a period of increased port activity.

CalMac service status: calmac.co.uk/en-gb/service-status

For queries about the traffic restrictions contact traffichq@argyll-bute.gov.uk

Travelling to Jura without a car?

Foot passengers and cyclists can avoid Port Askaig altogether by taking the Jura Passenger Ferry directly from Tayvallich on the Scottish mainland to Craighouse on Jura. No need to go via Islay at all. Sailings run April to October.

jurapassengerferry.com

For full travel information to Jura including ferry times, getting here by car and public transport options visit isleofjura.scot/travel-and-local-transport/

The response has been brilliant and it’s wonderful to see businesses across Islay and Jura getting behind this.

We’ve gone one step further. The full Jura Tourism Pack is now available as a downloadable PDF – print it off yourself for your guest folder, noticeboard or counter. And if you’d prefer hard copies of everything, we have those too. Just get in touch and we’ll sort it.

Why we still believe in print

In an age where everything is digital, we’ve just invested in leaflets. Here’s why.

There’s a moment that happens in B&Bs and self-catering cottages across the islands every single day in summer. A guest arrives, unpacks, sits down and reaches for the folder on the table. The one with the local information. The restaurant menus, the ferry times, the things to do. They flick through it with a cup of tea before they’ve even looked at their phone.

That moment is worth more than any Instagram post.

We’ve spent the last two years building isleofjura.scot into a comprehensive digital guide to the Isle of Jura. We’re proud of it – 6,500 visitors a month, growing year on year, recently featured in The Times as one of the 12 best Scottish islands. Digital is working.

But digital doesn’t sit on a table in a cottage on Islay at 9pm when someone is quietly wondering what to do tomorrow.

A leaflet does.

What’s in the Jura Tourism Pack

The new Isle of Jura illustrated leaflet – a tri-fold guide to the island with a map, useful visitor information, and a QR code linking to isleofjura.scot for everything else.

Holiday West Highland Magazine Spring/Summer 2026 – which features five full pages on Jura including the Jura Passenger Ferry and the new Bothan Jura Wild Sauna.

Posters and accommodation information sheets, and our island business adverts – for guest folders and noticeboards.

Leaflet holders – available on request for businesses that want a neat display stand.

Why print still works for Jura

Jura is a day trip destination for a lot of Islay visitors. They’re already there, they’ve already made the journey to the Hebrides, and the crossing to Jura takes ten minutes. But they might not make that crossing unless something prompts them.

A leaflet prompts them.

Someone browsing Instagram at midnight might save a post about Jura. Maybe. But someone picking up a leaflet over breakfast on Islay, seeing Corran Sands and the Paps what tours and attractions are open will investigate further.

DOWNLOAD OR REQUEST A PACK

Download the Jura Tourism Pack PDF here and print at home – it’s free.

Download the Jura Leaflet

Download Jura Tourism Map

Link to Holiday West Highland – online verison

Or if you’d like hard copies of the leaflets, magazine and posters posted or delivered to you, just get in touch at info@isleofjura.scot and we’ll get a pack out to you. A small charge to cover print costs and deliver may apply.

Visit our Jura Tourism Pack Page

And if you’re a Jura business and you haven’t yet linked to isleofjura.scot from your website – that’s the one digital thing we’d ask you to do.
Wild Swimming on Jura

Jura is one of the best places in Scotland to wild swim. The water is clean, the scenery is extraordinary, and on a good day you’ll have the whole beach to yourself. Here’s our local guide to the best spots on the island.

Wee Corran The southern end of Corran Sands, where you’ll see the Corran Sands sign and the bins. There’s a car park and easy access to the water. It’s a long, gradual walk out to deeper water which makes it ideal if you’re building up your confidence. This is where the Jura Wild Swimmers meet on Sunday mornings.

Big Corran The northern end of Corran, out towards the airstrip. A wilder, more open feel than Wee Corran and usually quieter. Beautiful on a calm day.

Craighouse Village Beach The easiest access on the island – the beach sits right behind the shop in the village. Perfect for a quick dip before or after lunch.

School Beach Just across from the school with a car park right next to the beach. Easy, accessible, and a lovely spot with views across the Sound.

The Secret Beach, Ardfernal This one takes a bit of effort – up and over the top of Ardfernal hill from Knockrome. What you find is actually two small coves facing opposite directions, one pointing north and one pointing south, so you can pick whichever is more sheltered on the day. Beautiful, safe, and almost always empty. Worth every step of the walk.

Inverlussa In the north of the island where the Lussa river meets the sea. A beautiful sheltered cove, safe swimming, and the added drama of fresh water mixing with salt. One of the most scenic spots on the island.

3 Arch Bridge Loch – the Salmon Pools Just up from the 3 Arch Bridge there’s a small loch that feeds into the salmon pools below. It’s a bit slippery underfoot so wear wetsuit booties if you have them. Entirely worth it – one of Jura’s hidden swimming gems.

Tarbert Loch A short walk along the track at Tarbert brings you to the west coast and this sheltered sea loch. Very safe as it’s well protected from the open sea, and the surrounding landscape is spectacular.

Jura Wild Swimmers A friendly group of local swimmers meet at Wee Corran at 10am most Sunday mornings. Everyone is welcome – just turn up, or contact us at info@isleofjura.scot for details of the WhatsApp group.

A note on safety Always check the weather and tide conditions before you swim. The sea around Jura is cold year-round – a wetsuit extends your season considerably. Never swim alone in remote spots and always tell someone where you’re going.

Paddleboarding and Kayaking on Jura – What You Need to Know Before You Go

The waters around Jura are stunning. On a calm day, the Sound of Jura is flat, clear and irresistible – and increasingly, visitors are arriving with paddleboards and kayaks to explore the coastline from the water. We love seeing people out there. But we also see the rescues, and there have been several in recent seasons.

This post is written with local knowledge and with the Coastguard’s own safety guidance in mind. Please read it before you head out.

Where people launch on Jura

The most popular spots are Corran Sands, the village beach at Craighouse, and the beaches stretching north of the village towards the school. All are accessible, relatively sheltered on calm days, and beautiful. Ronald also hires pedal boards in the village if you don’t have your own.

The Small Isles – a word of caution

The Small Isles just off Craighouse look tempting and on a calm day they’re very achievable. But be aware – once you pass those islands you are into the main Sound of Jura. It is wider, more exposed, and carries boat traffic including the Jura Passenger Ferry. Wind and tide conditions change significantly once you’re out there. What felt manageable on the way out can become very difficult on the way back. Know your limits before you commit.

The wind problem

Paddleboards are extremely susceptible to wind. A light offshore breeze that barely registers on the beach can push you steadily out to sea faster than you can paddle back. Always check the wind direction before launching – not just the speed. An onshore wind is your friend. An offshore wind is not.

Check the forecast at the Met Office or on Windy.com before you go. Tides matter too – check easytide.admiralty.co.uk for local tide times.

Before you launch – the checklist

Always use a leash. If you fall off, your board is your best chance of survival – don’t let it drift away from you.

Wear a personal flotation device. Make sure you can move freely while wearing it.

One person per board. Do not share a board, particularly with children.

Take your phone in a waterproof case. If you get into trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Tell someone your plans – where you’re going and when you expect to be back. This is not optional on Jura. Mobile signal is patchy once you’re on the water.

Don’t go alone if you can help it. If you do, make absolutely sure someone onshore knows your plans.

Check your equipment before you launch.

If something goes wrong

Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. They are available 24 hours a day and would always rather you called than didn’t.

Stay with your board. It keeps you afloat and makes you visible from the air and sea.

Don’t exhaust yourself trying to paddle against wind or tide. Conserve energy, stay calm, and call for help.

Jura is a remote island

This isn’t said to put you off – it’s said because it matters. The nearest lifeboat can take up to 45 minutes to an hour to reach you, depending on tides and weather conditions. That is a long time in cold water. Taking a few simple precautions costs nothing and could save your life.

Corryvreckan – experienced kayakers only

The Gulf of Corryvreckan at the north end of Jura is the third largest whirlpool in the world. It should only be attempted by experienced, well-equipped kayakers who understand tidal streams and have the skills to handle fast-moving, unpredictable water. It is not a casual paddle. If you are in any doubt, go by boat with a local guide instead – Jura Boat Tours run trips to the whirlpool and know these waters well.

Get out on the water. It’s one of the best ways to experience this island. Just do it safely.

For more information on safety on the water: hmcoastguard.uk/news/take-some-simple-steps-stay-safe-while-paddleboarding

If you’ve never done it, forest bathing is basically a very slow guided walk where you’re encouraged to notice things – textures, sounds, seasonal changes – at a pace that makes normal walking feel frantic.

Faye’s a trained practitioner but also an artist and dancer, so her sessions weave in movement and creativity rather than sticking to rigid scripts. You’ll sit on blankets, do gentle meditation prompts, maybe forage a bit, and engage with seasonal “invitations” – small practices that tune you into what’s happening in the woodland that day.

She uses a singing bowl for gentle timekeeping and brings natural objects she’s found on Jura (like short-eared owl feathers) to ground the sessions in the island’s specific landscape. She prepares for weeks beforehand – walking the route, connecting with the trees and soil – but leaves space for things to shift on the day.

The goal is slowing down and paying attention without performance or achievement. If that sounds like exactly what you need right now, you’re probably right.

Find her: @wildsenses_forestbathing on Instagram

Reiki

Yvonne and Denise in Knockrome are setting up Jura Natural Healing – trained Reiki practitioners offering sessions on the island. If you’ve never tried Reiki, it’s a hands-on (or hands-hovering) energy healing technique. You lie down fully clothed, they work through a series of hand positions on or above your body, and the goal is to shift whatever’s stuck – stress, pain, exhaustion, nervous system dysregulation.

Some people feel warmth, tingling, or emotional release during sessions. Some just fall asleep. Some feel absolutely nothing in the moment but report sleeping better or feeling less anxious for a week afterwards. It’s one of those modalities you either respond to or you don’t – there’s no predicting it.

If conventional treatments aren’t touching whatever’s going on with you, Reiki’s worth trying. At worst, you’ve had an hour lying down in a quiet room. At best, something shifts that hasn’t shifted in months.

The service is brand new on Jura, so reach out via the Wellness page for availability and booking information.

Find them: Via Wellness on Jura page

Why Jura Works for This

Here’s the thing about wellness on Jura: it works because the island forces you to slow down anyway. There’s one road, no phone signal in half the places, and if you’re waiting for the ferry you learn patience whether you want to or not.

The wellness offerings here aren’t trying to extract you from normal life and put you in a bubble for a weekend. They’re just giving you tools to engage with where you are – whether that’s a wood-fired sauna on a storm-battered beach, a hot tub overlooking mountains, or a very slow walk through ancient woodland.

It’s not polished. It’s not corporate. It’s not trying to sell you a lifestyle brand. It’s just a handful of people who’ve figured out how to help you decompress on an island that’s already doing half the work.

See all wellness options: Wellness on Jura page

Exciting news as Jura establishes independent tourism marketing and embraces a bright future for island hospitality

The new year brings significant developments for tourism on Jura. Following a community meeting in December with Councillor Dougie McFadzean – attended by island businesses, Jura Community Council, and Jura Development Trust – we’re establishing our own independent tourism organisation to market and promote our remarkable island.

A Community Decision

Over 40 tourism businesses and services across Jura are now working together under our island’s own destination marketing banner. From accommodation providers and activity operators to our distilleries, working estates, hospitality venues, artists, and makers – we’re building something that reflects Jura’s unique character and serves our community’s vision for sustainable tourism.

The initiative has strong community backing from Jura Community Council, Jura Development Trust, island businesses, and local councillors – along with partnership support from VisitScotland and AITC. It’s a collaborative effort that reflects both community priorities and regional tourism cooperation.

What Independent Tourism Development Means

Having our own tourism identity means we can:

Market Jura authentically – Promoting what makes our island special, from wildlife and wilderness to whisky heritage and warm welcome

Pursue appropriate opportunities – Accessing funding and partnerships suited to our island’s scale and priorities

Build direct relationships – Working with VisitScotland, Argyll & Bute Council, Wild About Argyll, Holiday West Highland, and regional partners

Keep community at the heart – Ensuring tourism development benefits residents and visitors alike, protecting what we value while sharing what we love

The Groundwork Is Already Done

The good news? Much of this work is already underway. This website – isleofjura.scot – has been quietly building Jura’s online presence for the past year, and now receives over 4,500 visits monthly from people planning trips to our island.

We’ve established partnerships with key players including Wild About Argyll (whose excellent regional marketing reaches 80,000+ visitors), Holiday West Highland magazine (distributed across ferry routes and accommodation), and direct links from VisitScotland’s Jura pages.

The infrastructure works. Now we’re formalising the organisation behind it.

Structure and Partnerships

We’re establishing the tourism group as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in early 2026. This structure provides proper governance, transparent reporting, and community accountability while keeping our focus where it belongs – on Jura’s benefit.

Key partnerships in place:

Argyll & Isles Tourism Co-operative (AITC) – We’ve joined this influential regional body, and AITC CEO Cathy Craig will visit Jura in February to meet with businesses and discuss collaboration opportunities.

Argyll & Bute Third Sector Interface (TSI) – Supporting our CIC setup and ensuring we’re structured properly from the start.

VisitScotland – Regional Director David Adams McGilp has offered ongoing support and strategic advice as we develop.

Argyll & Bute Council – Councillor Dougie McFadzean champions Jura’s tourism development and has committed to helping however he can.

Jura Boat Tours & Wildlife Adventures

What Comes Next

Immediate priorities for 2026:

Tourism Steering Group – We’re forming a representative group to guide development, ensuring different sectors across the island have voice and input. One single-track road connects the ferry terminal at Feolin to the northern settlement of Ardlussa. Jura is an island of ones: one road, one pub, one shop, one school. Well, almost. The island has grown just enough to now support three distilleries – Jura Distillery crafting its famous single malt, Deer Island Rum in Craighouse, and Lussa Gin up at Ardlussa estate. Between these points, you’ll find scattered crofts, a handful of estates, and the three distinctive mountain peaks known as the Paps of Jura.

This is not an island that’s been polished for tourism. The 240 residents aren’t here to service visitors – they’re here because they’ve chosen this life. The crossing takes about 10 minutes, but coordinating the ferries means your journey needs thought. Summer alternative (April-October): The Jura Passenger Ferry runs directly from Tayvallich on the mainland to Craighouse, which can be quicker and more convenient for foot passengers and cyclists. Getting to Jura guide

Accommodation: Book ahead. The Antlers Bakehouse and Bar and Jura Hotel serve food. Jura Distillery offers tours. There’s a petrol pump (limited opening hours).
27th-29th October 2025

Living on Jura means accepting certain trade-offs. We have stunning landscapes, tight-knit community, and a pace of life that keeps us sane. But accessing specialist healthcare? That’s where island life gets challenging. Whether it’s chronic back pain, an old sports injury that never quite healed, or sciatica that flares up every winter, getting expert treatment usually means multiple ferries, overnight stays, and significant expense.

Which is why we’re excited to share some genuinely good news: Phil Steward, a musculoskeletal pain specialist with over 30 years of experience, is visiting Jura from Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th October.

Why This Matters

Phil isn’t your typical therapist. He’s built his reputation over three decades by getting results where other treatments have failed. He now teaches his methods internationally, but he’s bringing his expertise right here to Knockrome for three days only.

He specialises in the Assessment-Led Bowen Technique, a gentle, holistic approach that works on the root cause of pain rather than just masking symptoms. It’s particularly effective for the kinds of chronic issues many of us live with – the bad back from years of farm work, the shoulder that’s never been the same since that fall, the knee that aches when the weather changes.

What Can He Treat?

Phil’s expertise covers a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions:

Back pain and sciatica – whether it’s from lifting, posture, or age

Neck and shoulder problems – including frozen shoulder and whiplash

Sports injuries – hamstrings, knee problems, ankle issues

Arthritis pain – gentle treatment for joint inflammation

Headaches and migraines – particularly tension-related

Carpal tunnel and repetitive strain injuries

Old injuries and scar tissue – problems that have been bothering you for years

Chronic pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments

Three Treatment Approaches

Phil brings multiple specialisms to the table:

1. Assessment-Led Bowen Technique – This is his signature approach. Rather than following a standard protocol, Phil assesses each person individually to understand the patterns of dysfunction in their body. He then treats the troublesome areas in the correct order, allowing the body to reset itself. It’s gentle enough for everyone from children to the elderly.

2. Scar Tissue Release – This is particularly interesting because many people don’t realise old scars can be treated. That c-section from years ago, the surgery scar that pulls, the injury site that never quite felt right – scar tissue can cause pain, restricted movement, and postural problems years after the original incident. Phil specialises in releasing these adhesions.

3. Advanced Manipulative Therapy – For cases that need more direct intervention, Phil uses sophisticated manipulative techniques. These are similar to what you’d expect from an osteopath, but integrated with his other approaches for maximum effectiveness.

The “One Session” Question

You might be thinking: “He’s only here for three days – surely I need multiple treatments?” Fair question. Many therapies do require ongoing sessions, and Phil’s website does mention that some chronic conditions benefit from up to six treatments.

However, Phil has assured us that even a single session can provide significant relief. His assessment-led approach means he can identify and address the most critical dysfunctions in your first visit. Many of his clients report immediate improvements in pain, mobility, and function after just one treatment.

Think of it this way: if you’ve been living with chronic pain for months or years, one expert session that provides even partial relief is better than continuing to suffer. And if you do need follow-up work, at least you’ll have a proper assessment and understand what’s actually causing the problem.

Practical Details

When: Monday 27th – Wednesday 29th October 2025

Where: Bothan Jura Retreat, Knockrome

Sessions: 45 minutes | £50

Booking:

Mobile: 07788 502 023

Email: info@handsonclinic.co.uk

More info: www.handsonclinicinc.co.uk

Important: Spaces are extremely limited – just three days means only a handful of appointments are available. If you’re interested, book early to avoid disappointment.

For Islay Residents

If you’re reading this from Islay and thinking “I wish he was coming here too” – good news! Discounted ferry tickets are available for Islay residents who want to make the short trip across for an appointment. Given how rare it is to access this level of expertise locally, it’s worth the journey.

Final Thoughts

We all know someone who’s been dealing with chronic pain – maybe it’s you. The farmer with the bad back, the retired teacher with arthritis, the young mum whose c-section scar causes problems, the runner whose knee has never been the same.

This is a genuine opportunity to access world-class treatment without the usual hassle and expense of leaving the islands. Phil gets results where other therapies have failed, and he’s bringing that expertise right to our doorstep.

Don’t let this rare opportunity pass you by. If you’ve been putting up with pain because treatment seems too difficult to access, now’s your chance to do something about it.

Book now: 07788 502 023 or info@handsonclinic.co.uk

Limited spaces available – book early to secure your appointment.

Have you tried Bowen Technique or seen Phil before? We’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments below.

From the opening cocktail party hosted by Deer Island to the Friday night locals’ concert in the hall, the festival showcased the depth of talent on Jura.
