How did it become successful and remembered?
What placed it down in film history books?

Is it just the romance?

I bought this CD/DVD (original, mind you) a couple of years back. When I was in Sembawang Music Store at Orchard, was wondering what to buy when I glanced at the title "Jim Brickman: A Disney Songbook", I went wow!
Immediately bought it. =D
Gives me nostalgia it does.

I'm not a big fan of the guitar as it seems utterly impossible for me to master it properly. But I can appreciate it's music and wondrousness.
After watching the movie 'August Rush' which is a story of an orphan boy who uses music to find his parents and brings the family together, I got a bit inspired by the way of guitar playing. It's certainly very different and not many people can master it, though I've found a few videos on youtube to show it.

Impossible guitar guy
The guitar he uses here is a 12-string guitar by Warr guitars if I'm not wrong since I've only heard this company making 12-string guitars for two-handed Tapping.

On the Letterman's show.
Her songs were featured in the August Rush movie.

Apparently someone mentioned about Alternative Tuning the guitar for such sounds. I'm not sure, maybe someone can help explain that to me. Some artistes who visualised Tapping is Preston Reed and Michael Hedges, if I researched correctly.

I'm a bit sad that Katee didn't win, but she didn't go empty handed in any case. Best girl dancer of the season.
Happy for Joshua though.
I think this season's top 4 has really come a long way from where they started, especially the 2 boys. I hope they keep on bringing life and joy to the people around them as they continue dancing with their heart.

Here's their top 4 group routine that gave me goosebumps.
Must be the music. LOVE IT!

Lots of other routines moved me as well. Will see to embing it here soon. Just let me find it among all the other things in my busy schedule this week.

Let me give you a hint of what my Crime and the Media unit is about.

So let's talk about this term connoted at the turn of the 21st century when media technologies developed at so quick a rate that the societal structure had no time to adapt to it.

TRIAL BY MEDIA

Ever since cameras and reporters were allowed in court, the public got more nosy and wanted more. Covering their busybody-ness with academic claims of educating people of the justice system in the country, the media had the chance to broadcast to the people court proceedings.
Only problem is...
The focus on what the media system wants and what the legal system is, is just too different.
Media wants entertainment value, profits, ratings and power. Legal system wants justice, what is right, what is truth (although in recent days I've not seen much of it, as law takes precedence over truth) and stability.
So how does these two very different structures coexist with one another?

And that's the question we all seek to answer.

With media trials, the defendant is not only victimized by the crime and the trial, that person is also victimized by the media which leads to persecution by the public, depending on what emphasis the media sensationalizes. These media trials and publicity, affects jury decision making and the manner in which the courts function. A place where a judge is seen as impartial becomes emotional. A place where justice and truth should reign now becomes a place of scandals. And the public's opinion of the criminal justice system fails when the verdict is not of the expected.

So where can we draw the line?
Now that's the difficult part to answer. There can be no fixed line, and that is the problem of it all.

On another note, I heard from my group members that a jury trial is basically the basis and reflection of a democracy.
So far I know of, Malaysia abolished all jury trials in 1995 and Singapore has none. Why?
What does that make us then?

a little korean jazz?

Found some nice jazz standards on the soundtrack of the Korean movie 'Seducing Mr. Perfect' (aka 'Seducing Mr. Robin'). Downloaded and watched that movie on DC++.

Not bad...
kinda cheesy though, but typical romance and it's quite cute. The soundtrack (plus Daniel Henney) doesn't hurt either =D

About 5.5/10
but a good show to watch for a feel-good feeling and generally keep your spirits lifted.

Teacher and student hit with a hammer and spanner

JOHOR BARU: Students watched in horror as their teacher and a classmate were repeatedly assaulted with a hammer and spanner during an examination in a classroom.

The incident at a top Chinese school here resulted in the student and teacher suffering multiple head injuries. They were both rushed to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment.

The attack is believed to have been sparked by a misunderstanding a few days ago when the victim allegedly called the assailant “useless”.

The drama unfolded at 1.30pm yesterday during a Chinese language exam for 50 Form Two students.

The 17-year-old assailant, also a student at the school, rushed into the classroom armed with a small hammer and spanner and started hitting the 15-year-old victim on the head.

The teacher, only known as Seng, said that she happened to be near the victim at that time and rushed to protect him when she was also hit with the hammer above her right eye.

Seng said that she and her student were bleeding profusely.

“There was blood everywhere,” she said, adding that she ran to the discipline teacher’s room to report the matter.

Both Seng and the student received several stitches at the hospital.

According to the injured student’s cousin, electrician Lee Boon Huat, 44, the misunderstanding stemmed from a small argument between the victim and another boy.

The student’s parents declined to comment on the matter, saying that their son was now recovering from the attack.

State CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Amer Awal confirmed the attack and that a Form Five student was handed over to the police by school authorities.

Got my results...did pretty okay...
1 High Distinction 2 Distinctions 1 Credit
Kind of weirded out by the credit, but will do my best this semester. Aiming for 3 HDs at least...

Oh, just went through the new units materials...and I declare: "It's SO NOT EASY!"

Communication and Creativity: is very interesting but difficult in the sense that we have to analyze creative forms not just in art, but even in organizational/social/scientific/civilization. Ranges all the way from paintings to architecture. A lot of emphasis on wit, humour and paradox though.

Crime and the Media: Looks to be another Youth Media alike subby to me. But on a more criminologist POV.

Cognitive and Social Psychology: will be something similar to PSY2031, but I hope I can do better on the reports and proposals than compared to 2031.

Psychological Foundations of Law: A forensic psychology unit, very interesting, but so law-ish like. Terms like 'jurisdiction', 'parole' and the likes keep appearing. Not to forget sex offenders. Interesting research topics though for my assignment.
"Does sex offender treatments work?"
"Should there be special legislation to detain sex offenders past the end of their sentences?"
"Should the age of criminal responsibility be changed, and if so, what age should it be set at?"

Lots of group work this semester...argh...need to brush up on communicating skills.

I got a kick reading my friend's blog about Malaysia politics [not to mention some of the comments]. It's weird how things are working out in the political scene in the country and I find the actions of the people involved getting lamer.

There's a lot of these problems that can be solved, if only people would just open up their eyes and think about others rather than themselves. Political history is in the making, but I'm not sure whether it's for good or for bad. I certainly hope and pray that it is the former.

And so here's my cry -
Oh God, save my country!

Mongol

Now I shan’t spoil this for some of you like what I usually do [you know who you are], so I won’t put up a full review.

Mongol has many interesting tidbits to it that makes the film sellable. Good action sequences (with little CGI), lots of blood, flashes of gore, beautiful scenery, reflective camera work, cunning revelry, love, lust, culture and destiny.

But mind you, this story is an epic, about how Genghis Khan became who he was, so don’t expect too much hero action like other shows [scoffs at redundant Hollywood blockbusters: not that I don’t like them, just that too much makes it too dull]. Funny thing is that even the war scenes have some philosophical nature to it, that it is more than just war.

I certainly hope that there is a sequel to Mongol, to finish off what it started in this film.
