Do you know your dog breeds? Below you’ll find some trivia questions about various dog breeds. I have also included some facts that you may find of interest.Enjoy!

A black tongue is characteristic of which breed of dog?

The Chow Chow

Chows actually were first bred in Mongolia, before being introduced to China. Literally translated from Chinese (Songshi Quan) their name actually means “Puffy Lion Dog”. Chows have a double coat and a distinctive ruff. Chows are extremely loyal to their family and are wary of strangers. These dogs need to be socialised at an early age.

When Shakespeare wrote “Ears which sweep the morning dew,” what breed of dog was he talking about?

Basset Hound

Basset Hounds are strong willed and difficult to teach, but they are very kind and good with children. Despite this drawback, these dogs seem to respond very well to dog clicker training techniques. These dogs were bred to hunt rabbits by smell. Basset Hounds require lots of regular exercise but they do very well living in the city. They have lots of energy and enjoy long walks.

Which breed of dog is credited with saving Napoleon Bonaparte from drowning?

Newfoundland.

Napoleon Bonaparte was swept overboard in 1815 while escaping from Elba Island. Napoleon was rescued by a Newfoundland dog who jumped into the water to save him. This breed of dog is native to Canada. They are water loving dogs, who are often used to aid in water rescues. They have webbed feet which makes them super swimmers and their thick double coat is water-resistant.

The title “Apollo of Dogs” refers to which dog breed?

Great Dane

Despite its name the Great Dane is actually from Germany. A very large animal the Great Dane stands about 29 inches and weighes about 110 pounds. In the past the Great Dane was used to hunt both stags and wild boars. These dogs have also been trained as guard dogs. They are classed as part of the working dog group.

The title of official dog of the French Royal court belongs to which breed?

Pyrenean Mountain Dog

In North America the Pyrenean Mountain Dog is better known as the Great Pyrenee. Male dogs should weigh about 105 to 120 pounds while the females should weigh in slightly lighter. These dogs are often used to guard and herd sheep. In the second World War the Great Pyrenees were used to carry packs and haul artillery through the mountains. This dog is well known for its thick white coat and double dewclaws.

If someone uses the term “black and tans” what kind of dog are they referring to?

Gordon Setter

The Gordon Setter is from Gordon Castle in Scotland. These dogs date back to 1726. Gordon Setters are a gun dog, used to aid in the hunting of game birds. These dogs are the slowest and heaviest Setters. They are also able to work for very long periods of time. They are very loyal to their family but are slow to mature and are not great around very small children.

Which breed of dog is also known as Perro de Agua, Perro de Lanas, Laneto and Churro?

The Spanish Water Dog

The Spanish Water Dog is a great herder, they work well with goats and sheep These dogs are often trained to work with fishermen. They not only help with nets but will tow small boats to shore. They are great divers and swimmers due to their webbed feet. They are hard working and loyal but need to be socialised early.

What kind of dog is the largest in the Terrier family?

The Airedale

The Airedale Terrier is about 23 inches in height and should weigh about 45 to 50 pounds. They originally come from Airedale which is in Yorkshire. Historically this dog was trained to otter hunt in the Aire River, because of this they are frequently called the waterside Terrier. They have a water-resistant thick coat which they shed twice a year. In Britain these dogs are trained to be police dogs.

Sacred to the Aztecs, this dog is the world’s smallest dog.

Chihuahua

The smallest breed in the world is the Chihuahua. They are named after the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico. Aztecs are believed to have used this breed in their religious ceremonies. Historically the Chihuahua were larger than they are today. It was the Spanish who began to cross breed them with miniature breeds like the Chinese Crested to produce a smaller dog. Popular Chihuahua cross breeds include the Chihueagle which is Beagle and Chihuahua and the Chihuaschund which is Chihuahua and Dachshund.

What kind of dog is native to Flanders?

Schipperke

“Little Black Devil” or the “Tasmanian Devil Dog” are names given to this breed because of its notorious bad behaviour. If you directly translate the name Schipperke you get “Little Captain”. Seventeen to eighteen years is the average lifespan of this small breed.

Methods to Use to Stop Dog Chasing

There are many different important issues that dog owners have to address with their dogs. Some of these involve barking problems, digging problems and even jumping up on people. The best way to solve these issues is to prevent them before they start, training puppies to be very obedient and live up to expectations through consistent reinforcement of the proper behaviors. Another training issue that sometimes comes up is to stop dog chasing since it can be dangerous to the dog as well as the individuals involved. There are different methods to use to stop dog chasing and preventing this issue requires that the individual be consistent with whatever method he chooses to use.

Prevention

One way to stop dogs from chasing cars is to never allow the dog to be outside without supervision and a leash. Dogs should never be allowed to run freely outside since they endanger themselves and others when they come near the road.Even if the individual lives in a rural area where there are not many cars, the dog should be trained to stay within its yard, or territory, so that it does not get unto the road and cause an accident. This will also stop a dog from chasing individuals that come around the dog’s territory.Allowing a dog to chase people or other animals is endangering the dog as well as other creatures. This also helps to create aggression in the dog, something that dog owners do not want to foster in their family pet.

When the dog is chasing the owner, playing with him, the owner should not give the dog any reinforcement of that behavior.Even though playing chase can be fun, it creates an aggressive behavior in the dog as well as the chasing behavior that the owner would not want to occur around visitors to the home. The way to stop dog chasing is to refuse to run away from the dog when he tries to play in this manner. The individual should always turn his or her back to the dog and refuse to give the dog any attention when it exhibits this behavior. When the dog decides to calm down, then the individual should turn his attention to the dog and give it praise. Another way to help to reinforce good behavior and stop dog chasing is to tell the dog to sit when it is starting the chase behavior. When the dog sits, the owner should give it attention so that the positive behavior is reinforced and the negative behavior is avoided.

What Are The Uses Of A Dog Cage?

There are many dog owners that choose to let their animals run freely around the house and other choose to purchase a dog cage for them to sleep in at night. This is usually done as a way to control the dogs that tend to run all over the house and bark consistently annoying the sleeping owners.

There are many places that have dog cages for sale so do check the major retail stores and pet outlets and you will find one that suits your budget. You can also find great deals on the internet, so do a Google search to find one that suits both your taste and budget. If you do drive, you can always check the garage sales that are around your town and you might just be able to find what you are looking for.

Dog cages are a great way to transport pets from home to the vet’s or on a family excursion when you don’t want the pet climbing all over the seat of the car. When out visiting the beach, or on a family picnic take the dog cage along and you will be able to place your pet inside when you so desire.

Dog cages come in a wide variety of materials, and depending on the size of you pet will help you to make a decision about which type to choose. Whatever type of cage you choose make sure to lay some old blankets, or comfy soft pillows inside so to provide a warm, comfortable, resting place for your pet.

Certain types of dog cages can also be used as a training method, and when the pet misbehaves consistently, place it in the cage for a time-out. Soon it will learn to break the habit that has put it their in the first place.

Methods to Stop Dog Aggression

There may be certain reasons why a dog might become aggressive toward other dogs.Dogs may sometimes get nervous around other dogs. In other cases the dog is striving to be the dominant dog. In other cases, the dog is becoming aggressive since he is defending his territory. The dog can also be taught to be aggressive by it’s master rather than being socialized to the other dogs. Some dogs might also be protective of their masters and become aggressive in this manner, as well as becoming aggressive sexually.

Tips

One way to stop dog aggression is to make sure that a dog is socialized as a puppy to other animals.Puppies should be given the opportunity to play with other dogs that are mature and well behaved. In this way, they learn the right and proper dog behavior from the older animals. The puppy will recognise that other dogs are okay.

Another way to stop dog aggression when a dog starts to become aggressive is to address the issue immediately each time it happens. The dog should not be allowed to get away from this type of dangerous behavior.A head collar or muzzle can be very effective while the dog is still in training to stop dog aggression, but its not texactly the solution to the problem.

A way to stop dog aggression is through strict training so that the dog is tuned into the instructions of it’s master rather than focusing on the other animal. The dog should be trained to focus on the owner so that his attention is there and the owner can give a different command to the dog, such as ‘down’ or ’sit’ while there is another dog around. The owner should also teach himself to control his anxious feelings and behavior, as small as it might be, so that the dog does not take a nervous cue from the owner. This can also help to stop dog aggression since the dog always learns from the owner. Once the dog has been trained to focus, the dog can also be distracted by being trained to look for a treat when there is another dog around. The treat can be thrown to the ground and the dog can be told to find it, thus distracting the dog from other dogs and stop the dog aggression before it starts.

Puppy Care Information that will benefit You and your new Addition

There are few things cuter than a new puppy – at least until you bring one home and watch him soil your carpet and chew on your favorite sofa! Those adorable faces in the pet store window are going to take some effort on your part to care for and train. The good news is that with a bit of puppy training information under your belt, and plenty of preparation before your new arrival comes home, you will be able to handle those puppy days with much more ease and enjoyment than you might have originally thought. The key is in arming yourself with the tools and knowledge that you will need to be the best puppy owner that you can be.

Stock up on Supplies

To determine which supplies that you will need for your new arrival, there are any number of websites that will offer the puppy care information that you will need. Other good sources for puppy care information include your veterinarian’s office, the local library, or the shelter that you adopt your puppy from. The first items to shop for will be feeding supplies, and these include bowls for water and food, as well as a high quality dry food specially formulated for puppies. It is also a good idea to get a crate for your puppy, since most puppy care information touts the benefits of crate training dogs. You can line the bottom of your crate with an old blanket or towel that your puppy will find comfy for sleeping on.

A collar and leash are other good supplies to purchase before you bring your puppy home, as well as a few chew toys and grooming supplies like shampoo and nail clippers. To make sure that your chew toys are safe for your new pup, avoid items like rawhide that can break off and get lodged in a small dog’s throat and opt instead for durable items like a Nylabone chew toy for playtime. Having some of these toys on hand will hopefully deter your dog from teething on other items like your favorite shoes or the living room chairs.

Get Ready for Housebreaking

Housebreaking will be one of the first puppytraining objectives you will have for your pup, and there is plenty of good puppy care information available to complete this task properly. A crate can be a very helpful tool in the process of housebreaking, since your puppy is unlikely to soil his crate when he is inside. Make sure that you have plenty of cleaning supplies on hand, since accidents can and do happen on occasion. Most of all, arm yourself with patience, since it will take a bit of time for your pup to get the hang of this routine. For more puppy care information about housebreaking, talk to your veterinarian, breeder or check the Internet.

Different Alternatives for Training your Beagle .

Beagles are chosen over other dogs because they are very friendly.Even when they can prove to be a little tough to train, but they are worth the effort.Beagle training entails two approaches. The freedom of training choice rests on the owner who has sufficient knowledge about their pet.

For Jack Russell owners, you may access my Jack Russell Training Article using this link Jack Russell training guide.

The decision to train his own dog lies with the beagle owner.Training guides are available to facilitate smooth plan implementation. The exercise schedule is also something that the owner can decide on.Home training is a good choice as it can facilitate a smooth flow for the owner and the dog.The freedom to set the training pace while studying the methods can prove to be a primary advantage.

The disadvantage is that this kind of beagle training will entail huge amounts of time and energy. The two important things that the owner will need is time for skill mastery and formal training.Another thing is that task repetitions will also be a daily requirement.

Furthermore, the owner is responsible for giving the beagle praise when called for.As an owner, your patience will be called for during those times when the dog is stubborn for an extended period time. There will definitely be moments when the beagle will show his stubbornness. In this regard, firmness with the beagle is necessary for him to realize that obedience is demanded. However, you must also know how to temper this by allowing for breaks.

My Collie training article can be accessed here Training a Collie.

However, you do not have to train your beagle on your own.Service providers can give your dog professional training and quality facilities. To arrive at quicker results, you may put the training responsibility at the hands of the professionals. These people are also enthusiastic about filling you in with any guidance you want to have.

One of the things that needs to be considered however is the price that will go with this kind of training. The cost of the training will be reflective of the kind of skills and abilities you want the beagle to develop.

These professionals likewise deal with a full schedule that you have to know when to squeeze in.Moreover, things are not the same when the trainer is available and when your training your dog alone at home.

If your goal though is to train the dog to the fullest of his capabilities, then proper planning is required. The aspects of beagle training should be a part of the decision-making.When it comes to training choices and services available, not one will be the same with another. You have to remember that the training needs of each beagle and owner are never the same.

Important Facts to Consider with Siberian Husky Puppy Training

The Siberian husky was originally bred centuries ago by the Chukchi tribes that lived in the northern area of Asia. The first purpose of the dog was for pulling sleds, and in the early 1900’s these dogs were brought to Alaska to compete in dog-sledding competitions. Many were quick to note the abilities of these rugged dogs, and when they were introduced into the rest of the United States a number of years later, their popularity rose significantly and quickly. Now this breed makes a popular family pet for many, although it is important to understand this dog and the basics of Siberian husky puppy training before bringing one of these animals into your home.

The Temperament of the Siberian Husky

The Siberian husky is a friendly dog, although not overly loyal to his particular master. While he is an intelligent dog, he can also be somewhat willful and stubborn, making dog training as a part of your Siberian husky puppy care a bit challenging at times. However, despite his independent streak, he can also be affectionate and eager to please, which means that with some patience and consistency, this dog can make a great family pet. The breed is generally very good with children, probably since the original breed that lived with the Chukchi tribes was often allowed to sleep inside the home with the children to keep them warm in the frigid winter temperatures of the area.

Preparing for your Siberian Husky

The first step in preparing for your Siberian husky puppy care is to provide a fenced yard for your dog to run in. This breed has a definite tendency to run – and will run away if let loose without the confines of a fence. It is extremely important to remember that if your dog is not within the confines of his yard, he needs to be on a leash at all times. This is for his protection as well as for your peace of mind. This dog is also an energetic and social creature that will need plenty of playtimes with his owner to keep him from getting bored. A bored dog can become a destructive one, so another important part of your Siberian husky puppy care will be to spend time each day playing with your pup.

Grooming

These dogs do tend to shed their lush and beautiful coats, so another part of your Siberian husky puppy care will be frequent brushings. Generally this can be done once or twice a week, especially during the heavy shedding seasons that occur a couple of times each year. Aside from the brushings, your Siberian husky will probably be fairly conscientious about keeping his coat clean on his own, since this breed is almost cat-like in the way they groom themselves. It is rare to have to worry about odors or parasites as part of your Siberian husky puppy care.
A Siberian husky can make a wonderful family pet and a good companion. With the basics of Siberian husky puppy care under your belt, you will be ready to bring your dog home to meet his new family.

Pekingese Puppy Training Starts With The Purchase Of A Puppy

Puppies are not all alike even if they are the same breed, and Pekingese puppy training will be easier if the owner takes care picking out the perfect Pekingese puppy. Some people think that going to a private breeder will ensure that they get a good puppy that will be easy to raise. Puppy breeders usually have a great deal of experience with breeding and raising dogs. The ads in the newspaper for puppies do not mean that the person selling is an expert. The breeder of puppies is the one who owns the female dog that produced the puppies.Anyone else is not a breeder. Some of the people who are considered breeders do not know what they are doing.

The first important step in Pekingese puppy care is buying from a breeder who knows what they are doing. These people have the experience and knowledge to properly produce puppies. These breeders sell puppies that they know. They know the parents of the puppy. These breeders always sell their puppies directly to an owner without a middle man or outlet store. These breeders start from the beginning dog training and caring for the puppies properly. These steps make a big difference in the later life of the dog.

Pekingese Dog Training Starts By Making Informed Choices

Pekingese puppy care starts with choosing the gender that will best suit the owner of the puppy. Males and females have many different characteristics that are generally true of their gender. Puppies owners should look at these factors before choosing their puppy. Pekingese puppy care will be easier after making the choice best for each owner.Potential owners should not choose a puppy that shows hostility no matter how subtle to new people. These puppies may be more difficult to raise and care for when they get to their new home.

Pekingese puppy care starts with the proper health measures. Many puppies already have shots before they are adopted. New owners should make sure that they have the records for these shots, and they should get the shots necessary on a schedule. Pekingese puppy care includes feeding the puppy properly. The proper food could make a great difference in the health of the puppy. The veterinarian will be the best one to advise on the best food for the puppy throughout their lives. Check with the doctor to find out the most nutritional food for the puppy.

You have to admit it, the first you saw that little Akita dog in a pet store, you know you’re in love with it, right? That’s why, it’s now sleeping there like a log in your living room carpet. My, just look how lovely and angelic your Akita dog is but you know very well that once it has awakened from its deep slumber, it’s going to turn into one hell of a little devil he is, just like what he’s doing ever since you brought him home. Now, you’re thinking about learning some Akita information including how to train him the right way, right? But first of all, you have to know and put in your mind that dogs are dogs and Mother Nature have made them the way they are supposed to be. The only thing you need now is learn how to train him and make him behave the way you want him to be.

So, the first thing you need to do is to find someone who can do the right Akita dog training, right? Well, partially, yes. You see, a lot of dog owners today would prefer to train their own dogs in their own pace and time. One of the prime reason for this is, they wanted to build stronger and lasting relationship and bonding with their furry best friend. An Akita dog owner is not far from everyone else. Certainly, a certified Akita owner will really try to find some good information of an Akita dog breed and learn, not just how to train him but how to feed him, how to care for him and how to make his best friend truly the “bestest” best friend of all.

So, how can he manage to go through this kind of training?
Lab Puppy Care Will Produce A Loving Friend

Lab puppy care will make a significant difference in the life of a dog. People usually get their dogs when they are little puppies so the training and care of this puppy can be important to the long life of the dog. Lab puppy care should start from the choice of the breed. Lab puppy care is quite easy compared to the care of these dogs grown to full size. A Lab puppy is usually an adorable bundle of soft hair that eats a little bit from a bowl carefully placed on the kitchen floor. A full grown Lab can be a huge, monstrous dog that is filled with unbelievable energy. Anyone looking for a new pet should check out the full grown animals.

Lab puppy care should start with choosing an expert breeder. These people know how to produce great dogs, and they start training the dogs properly at a very young age. This training could make a difference in the behavior of the dog from the very beginning until the dog ages gracefully. Lab puppy care will be much easier if the breeder has done the proper dog training from the birth of the dog. When the dog has grown completely, this proper training should make a huge difference when trying to control a huge, full-grown Lab.

Lab Puppy Care Includes Serious Training Methods And Proper Nutrition

Nothing is more important in Lab puppy care than proper healthcare. Each puppy should have some shots before they are turned over to the new owner. These shots should be followed up on a regular basis with periodic visits to a qualified veterinarian. The proper shots from a doctor will help to avoid serious problems with each puppy. Lab puppy care should include special attention to the eyes of the puppy. Labs are often susceptible to eye problems so this is very important.

Lab puppy care includes a place for exercise because Labs are very frisky and energetic. These puppies should be able to get enough exercise. A Lab puppy who gets some attention with a game of fetch will not get into other mischief. Lab puppy care requires some basic puppy training including staying happily on a leash and sitting when commanded. All the members of the family should take part in the training of the puppy or the puppy will respond to some members and not others.
