Google doodles On Mother’s Day 2012

The Mother’s Day is celebrated on various dates and days in many parts of the world, yet most commonly in month of March, April or May as a day to honor mothers and motherhood. This day is also known as Mothering Sunday, that’s because it will celebrated on Sunday only. Mothering Sunday is a time when children pay respect to their Mothers. Children often give their Mothers a gift and a card. Celebrations of mothers and motherhood occur throughout the world; many of these can be traced back to ancient festivals, like the Greek cult to Cybele or the Roman festival of Hilaria. Mothering Sunday was also known as ‘Refreshment Sunday’, Pudding Pie Sunday ( in England) or ‘Mid-Lent Sunday’.

Mothering Sunday or Mothers Day didn’t celebrate on a fixed month or day because it is always the celebrate on middle Sunday in Lent (which lasts from Ash Wednesday to the day before Easter Sunday). This means that Mother’s Day in the UK will fall on different dates each year and infect sometimes it in fall in different months also.

Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent approx. from the 16th century.

History of Mother’s Day

In the United States of America (USA), Mother’s Day started about one and Half century ago, when a lady named Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed would be best advocated by mothers. She announced that day as “Mother’s Work Day.”

In the year 1905 when Anna Jarvis died, her daughter, also named Anna, began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. The young Anna remembered a Sunday school lesson that her mother gave in which she said, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers.”

Anna starts to lobby prominent businessmen like John Wannamaker, and politicians including Presidents Taft and Roosevelt to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers and motherhood. At one of the first services organized to celebrate Anna’s mother in 1908, at her church in West Virginia, Anna handed out her mother’s favorite flower, the white carnation. Five years later, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother’s Day. In 1914 Anna’s hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday.

At first, people celebrate Mother’s Day by attending Church, writing letters to their mothers, and eventually, by sending cards, presents, and flowers. With the increasing gift-giving activity associated with Mother’s Day, Anna Jarvis became enraged. She believed that the day’s sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit. In 1923 she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother’s Day festival, and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention selling carnations for a war mother’s group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the mother’s day tradition.

Despite Jarvis’s misgivings, Mother’s Day has flourished in the United States. In fact, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters everywhere take advantage of this day to honor and to express appreciation of their mothers.

Celebration of Mother’s Day

Getting everyone together for a picnic, brunch, garden party or barbecue can be fun and easy – and what a nice gift it makes for a mother…having all of her children together having a good time with her as the guest of honor.

In different countries Mother’s Day is celebrated in different way.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German architect.Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, along with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, are widely regarded as the pioneering masters of Modern architecture. Mies, like many of his post World War I contemporaries, sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created an influential twentieth century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces. He strived towards an architecture with a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space. He called his buildings “skin and bones” architecture. He sought a rational approach that would guide the creative process of architectural design. He is often associated with the aphorisms “less is more” and “God is in the details”.

The mystery around the last days of the assault on LTTE deepened today after a documentary filmmaker claimed to have a "chilling piece of footage" showing the bullet-riddled body of the son of its slain supremo V Prabakaran, a report described by Colombo as "concocted".

Prabhakaran’s 12-year-old son Balachandran’s body is shown stripped to the waist and with five bullet holes to the chest.

The footage dating from May 18, 2009 will be broadcast on Wednesday in a Channel 4 film — Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished–a sequel to the controversial investigation broadcast last year which accused both the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government of war crimes and crimes against humanity, The Independent said.

However, the authenticity of the video is unknown. The Sri Lanka high commissioner in India rejected the charges made by the filmmaker Callum Macrae.

"In our view this is a tentative report, uncorroborated and not being authenticated. This has not been shared with us for us to check. It goes against journalism ethics. The report is motivated and is concocted," Lankan high commissioner to India Prasad Kariyawasam told PTI in New Delhi.

The report comes ahead of a crucial vote on US-backed UN Human Rights Council resolution for an inquiry into human rights violations by Lankan army.

Talking about Balachandran, Kariyawasam said "He may have died. We have no records but he was never murdered. We deny this allegation."

He said according to a report, 8000 people were killed in the war and this included many LTTE members. "They were not murdered. They died in the course of war".

He said the latest report was "motivated" to bring disrepute to Lanka.

Asked if they officially registered their objection with Channel 4, he said, "We have officially objected. The high commission in London has done so." Source Times of india

The Windows 8 Developer Preview was released late last year and clocked over 3 million downloads. Remember that though Windows 8 Consumer Preview is free to download and use, this is prerelease beta software and is expected to have bugs and errors for which no official support will be provided. Technology enthusiasts, developers and software testers might like this unique opportunity to download Windows 8 and preview it.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview should run on the same hardware that powers Windows 7 today. In general, you can expect Windows 8 Consumer Preview to run on a PC with the following:

1 GHz or faster processor

1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

1024 x 768 minimum screen resolution

However, there are some additional requirements to take into consideration in order to use certain features in Windows 8. In order to use the Snap feature, you will need a PC with a 1366×768 resolution or higher.

If you want to use touch, you’ll need a multitouch-capable laptop, tablet, or display. Windows 8 supports up to five simultaneous touch points, so if your hardware doesn’t, you may find typing on the onscreen keyboard and using certain controls more of a challenge. You’ll also need an internet connection to try out the Windows Store, to download and install apps, and to take your settings and files with you from one Windows 8 PC to another.

Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. For the United Nations, International Women’s Day has been observed on 8 March since 1975. The Day is traditionally marked with a message from the Secretary-General.

Google has doodled the International Women’s Day on four previous occasions. First in 2005, then consecutively after a four-year break, from 2009 to 2011. International Women’s Day was first celebrated on March 18, 1911 in four European countries – Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The United Nations began officially supporting and sponsoring the event since 1975, the year that was designated as International Women’s Year.

This year’s International Women’s Day Google doodle is in sync with Google’s official logo colours – blue, red, yellow and green. Only the blue is of a purplish tinge. The first ‘G’ is represented by the symbol of Venus and the second ‘o’ is a yellow flower. The red dots in place of the first ‘o’ and the ‘e’ seem to represent the bindi, a symbol identified with Indian women. The 2012 International Women’s Day doodle is the 1324th Google doodle since the first ever on for the Burning Man Festival back on August 30, 1998.
