Similar to humans, animals, trees, and some plant species, Phalaenopsis orchids can undergo stressful times when they become overheated. It is important for Phalaenopsis orchid owners to be able to recognize the signs of orchid distress as soon as possible so that the ensuing plant can be helped prior to the orchid being permanently damaged beyond repair.

Phalaenopsis orchids are a more sensitive type of orchid breed. When the plants are subjected to excessive heat, the moisture that is contained in the plants tissues will evaporate which causes an imbalance called “transpiration.” Phalaenopsis orchids require that moisture be replaced in order to avoid dehydration.

Signs that a Phalaenopsis orchid is dehydrated include:

In our previous post, we discussed the serious toll scale insects can take on your orchid plants and introduced you to mealy bugs. Today, we take a more in depth look into mealy bugs and how you can detect them on your plant.

Identifying Mealy Bugs

Mealy bugs can easily be identified in their adult form. The long tailed mealy bug is the easiest for most people to identify because of its long filaments on the backside of its body. Look for these pests to be varying in shades of white, pale pink or even blue in color. Orchid owners often find these pests on the underside of their Phalaenopsis orchid leaves, but they may also be hidden in other areas of the plant.

Unlike scale insects, which do not travel around a Phalaenopsis orchid, the mealy bug is considered to be a serious pest because of its ability to stay on the move and travel from place to place both within the Phalaenopsis orchid plant and even outside of the orchid plant.

Mealy Bugs on the Move

Mealy bugs in different life stages will exit the existing plant and take refuge under the potted plant, travel to a neighboring plant, hide in cracks and crevices where the plant is located, under rims of pots, and under trays where the orchid is located. One of the worst problems with Mealy Bugs is that the nymphs are so tiny that they are extremely difficult to see and they usually require a magnifying glass to locate them. Because of their tiny size, the little crawlers are able to hide or crawl from plant to plant with ease, which in turn will easily spread the mealy bug infestation. Mealy bugs will also travel to other ornamental plant species that are located nearby.

It is important to begin treatment of mealy bugs as soon as they are discovered. Mealy bugs can be removed more easily once they reach adulthood because they can be seen, but the younger generations are the most problematic pests. In order to bring a mealy bug infestation under control, it is recommended that mealy bugs be treated every 10 to 14 days.

Insects That Can Be Attacking Your Orchids, Part 1 of 2

It may be hard to imagine, but even with the most diligent care of your most favorite Phalaenopsis orchids, unwanted insect invaders can easily appear at any moment in time. Although typical household plant pests can attack orchids, the most common insect Phalaenopsis orchid invaders are scale insects and mealy bugs.

Scale Insects

Scale insects are tiny insects that do not have visible legs or antennae. Scale will press tightly against the Phalaenopsis orchid that they are feeding upon. You will find the scale insects hiding on the undersides of the leaves, feeding upon the plant. Scale insects have long stylets, which are much longer than the insect itself. This invasive insect will feed slowly upon a plant reducing its vigor and, if not treated, its lifespan. Evidence of scale can be recognized when a plant begins to grow poorly or when leaves or spikes begin to die. On Phalaenopsis orchids, scale insects are often confused with mealy bugs because of the cotton-like appearance that they create.

Outdoors, scale is controlled by natural predators such as ladybugs and parasitic wasps, but indoors, they must be carefully treated by focusing on the scale insect nymphs or crawlers rather than the adults. Once scale insects reach adulthood, they are difficult to kill. Like mealy bugs, scale insects in their infancy can easily crawl from plant to plant, or accidentally be blown from place to place. Their tiny size makes hiding and infestation quite easy.

Mealy Bugs

Mealy bugs are another common threat to Phalaenopsis orchids. There are approximately 300 species of mealy bugs that are known in the United States and Canada, but reports state only 39 species of the pests tend to attack orchids. Like scale insects, mealy bugs are a serious threat to Phalaenopsis orchids. Failure to address a mealy bug infestation will result in a serious infestation of the pests.

A healthy Phalaenopsis orchid will delight you by displaying its colorful leaves, flowers and buds. But like any plant, this orchid goes through a life cycle that includes shedding old blooms and growing new ones.

If you want to encourage your orchid to stay in bloom or grow new buds, a few basic orchid tips should help you get there.

Water

As Just Add Ice Orchids recommends, just three ice cubes a week should keep your plant sufficiently hydrated throughout the blooming process. Watch your pots for signs of overwatering (damp or standing water on the potting material) or dehydration (drying out of the leaves) and adjust accordingly. Fertilizer

Using fertilizer while your orchid is already in flower will help it grow new buds. Mix a balanced houseplant fertilizer with water at half the recommended strength – and don’t add ice! The week you fertilize, skip the three ice cubes and instead place the plant in the sink with the drainage holes exposed. Water with the fertilizer solution until you see it starting to run out of the bottom of the pot.

Temperature

Though a Phalaenopsis normally does best in warmer temperatures, a cooler environment can help trigger flowering. Find an area in your home or office where the temperature stays around 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your pot there for about a month.

Other Orchid Tips

Just Add Ice Orchids do best in indirect sunlight. While promoting new bud growth, keep direct sunlight out of the plant’s path.
Watch for a new spike growing from your pot – the root grows upward and the tip resembles the shape of a mitten.
Once the spike starts growing, support it with a stake. Avoid re-orienting your pots while the stake and buds grow – keeping them in a consistent position will aid the plant in growing a beautiful, arching display.

Virtually every orchid fan has had the experience of looking in on their favorite plant one morning only to discover – oh no! – tiny buds or entire blooms dropped to the bottom of the planter, dead before their time.

The causes of premature bud or bloom loss (called bud blast) can range from a sudden change in room temperature to over-watering.

Your colorful, hardy Phalaenopsis plants need not be a victim of early bud loss when you use orchid tips from Just Add Ice Orchids to keep them in optimum health:

Check the temperature. Orchids thrive best in a warmer, humid environment (65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit). Make sure your plants are in a consistently warm area of your home or office to see if this makes a positive difference.
Attend to the water. Orchids by nature do not require large amounts of hydration. Just Add Ice Orchids only need three ice cubes added to the pot each week. Don’t let the roots sit in excess water – that’s a sure way to kill off buds before they have a chance to bloom.
Remove the fruit bowl. That innocent-looking bowl of apples, bananas or oranges near your plants may be the culprit. Ripening fruit, burning candles and incense all emit ethylene gas that can cause bud blast.

Looking at the orchid can be deceiving because it does indeed look delicate, but it is quite hardy in comparison to many other types of flowers that can be found in the United States.

When considering to buy a Phalaenopsis orchid plant, it is important to buy a plant that is green and healthy looking. The flowers on the plant should look healthy and vibrant and it is not uncommon for additional buds to be present on the plant that you are purchasing. Many people who are new to owning orchids are astounded by their amazing beauty. The flowers of a Phalaenopsis orchid look elegant regardless if they are a deep and vibrant fuchsia pink or a hint of color in the blushing pink orchid. The beautiful Phalaenopsis orchid lasts longer than many other types of flowers, but for those who have never owned an orchid, having a once flourishing plant suddenly look empty as it loses its gorgeous flowers can be alarming.

The question is often asked to orchid experts…Did I do something to make the Phalaenopsis orchid lose its flowers or is my orchid dying?

The great news is that in most instances, there is actually nothing wrong with the Phalaenopsis orchid plant that loses its flowers after months of blooming!

What is Actually Happening with Your Orchid

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end…which includes the lovely blooms of an orchid. The flowering of an orchid will last anywhere from one month to three months depending on a few different factors. After an orchid has finished its flowering cycle, the Phalaenopsis orchid plant will go into a period of dormancy. During the dormancy time, the plant will conserve and build up its energy reserves as it readies itself for the next flowering season.

Once the Phalaenopsis orchid loses its blooms, it is time to give the plant a trim. New orchid buds will never grow on a stem that is brown or yellow so snipping the stem is required to help in the regrowth process. You can also choose to help the re-blooming process of the Phalaenopsis orchid by trimming healthy green stems back to a node, or by removing the entire flower spike one inch from the base of the plant so that important energy is returned to the roots and leaves for a stronger plant base.

Mini Phalaenopsis Orchids Will Brighten Up A Terrarium, Part 2 of 2

In our previous blog post, we discussed how mini Phalaenopsis orchids can brighten up a terrarium display. Today, we will go over how you can create your very own!

To build a mini orchid terrarium display:

Step One…

Wash the terrarium tank thoroughly before to ensure that any left-over salts or diseases are removed.

Step Two…

Decide which types of plants will be able to co-exist with your mini Phalaenopsis orchids. Miniatures Phalaenopsis orchids will do well in small terrariums, and small ivy, fibrous-rooted begonia and small ferns can be grown with the Phalaenopsis orchids since they all enjoy the humidity that exists within a terrarium.

Step Three…

Be careful where the mini Phalaenopsis orchid terrarium is placed. Direct sunlight will act as an oven for any size terrarium. Colder area placement of a Phalaenopsis orchid terrarium is not good as the orchids must be kept warm but not hot. Mid-level light levels along with moderate temperatures are best for terrariums with Phalaenopsis orchids.

Step Four…

Add two inches of stones to the bottom of the well cleaned and rinsed terrarium. All stones placed in the terrarium must be thoroughly cleaned to ensure that nothing harmful will be transferred to the elegant mini Phalaenopsis orchids. Placing one inch of water in the rocks will create a humid environment for the orchids to live within. Be sure that the roots of the orchids are not placed in any standing water as they will rot. Note: Some people choose to use soil at the bottom of their terrarium. While pretty to look at, it is easy for disease to be introduced to a terrarium when soil is used as the substrate.

Step Five…

Leaving the mini Phalaenopsis orchids in their original clear grower pot is the best way to ensure proper growth and the least amount of damage to the bright and beautiful plants. After the bottom stones are in place, set one or two mini Phalaenopsis orchids inside of the terrarium. Using sphagnum moss to hide the potted plants will not only give a finished touch, the moss will give a fantastic looking dimension to the terrarium.

Step Six…

If the terrarium happens to look dry, just add ice to add some moisture and humidity into their self- contained environment. If the terrarium looks continuously wet along the walls, open for short periods of time to help eliminate some of the humidity. Be mindful of cold areas, cold breezes, or hot areas that will damage the Phalaenopsis orchids.

The health of your Phalaenopsis orchid is very much dependent on the health of its root system. An orchid with healthy roots will grow well and produce beautiful flowers, while one that has bad roots will not survive for long. Proper watering and choosing the right potting material are essential to keeping the roots of your orchid strong and healthy.

Follow these instructions to help your Phalaenopsis orchid grow healthy roots:

First of all, you have to choose a light potting material for your Phal, such as peat moss, sphagnum moss, or bark chips. A light potting material has sufficient water holding capacity to enable the orchid to stay healthy and provides enough aeration for the roots.
If the leaves of your orchid are becoming a little crinkled or its pods are shrinking, it means that it needs watering. It is important to know that an orchid is better off being too dry than too wet. Overwatering can result in root rot.
Keep watering your orchid until the potting material is completely moist. The quantity of water and the frequency of watering may vary depending on the potting material used and the temperature and humidity in the growing area.
Use filtered water containing as little salt as possible to moisten your orchid. The roots of your orchid can break if they take in too much salt, resulting in discoloration or death.
Morning is the best time to water your orchid, especially if you are growing it outdoors. Watering in the morning enables excess water to be drained or evaporated before the temperature becomes colder.

Many people still believe that nibbling on a beautiful orchid is toxic to Kitty. While it’s never a good idea for your cat to nibble on most plants, these orchids (which are also known as Moth Orchids) are non-toxic to both cats and dogs.

Most Houseplants Aren’t Toxic

Some houseplants definitely are dangerous to your family pet, but most are not. Common houseplants or cut flowers we use to beautify our homes can be dangerous to pets should they eat them. Daffodils, aloe vera and baby’s breath are three.

But most houseplants pose no danger to your pets. Safe plants commonly seen in homes include (according to ASPCA.com) the Christmas cactus, bamboo, areca or golden palm, the button fern, and more.

Still, it’s wise to keep your cat and dog away from all plants, including your orchids. Sphagnum Moss vs. Bark: Which is Better for Phalaenopsis Orchids?

Potting materials have a significant effect on the growth of orchids, and therefore, it is essential that you select the right potting material for your Phalaenopsis orchids. There are two kinds of potting materials that are commonly used for growing Phalaenopsis orchids, and they are sphagnum moss and bark.

Before we discuss the pros and cons of sphagnum moss and bark, let us take a look at the properties and functions of an ideal potting material for Phalaenopsis orchids.

Supplies water and nutrients to orchids
Maintains adequate aeration around the roots
Provides sufficient room for root development
Allows good root anchorage
Free of toxic materials
Absorbs water quickly and allows adequate drainage
Absorbs nutrients well and release them slowly
Should not decompose too quickly

No potting material can meet all these requirements, but sphagnum moss and bark are more suitable for Phalaenopsis orchids than other types of potting materials. Sphagnum moss is a fine substrate, and it can hold water better than bark. Its water retention ability makes it an excellent potting material for young orchids. However, it cannot provide proper aeration for root respiration. It can also be difficult to transplant an orchid that is potted in sphagnum moss. Bark, on the other hand, provides good aeration for the roots and helps produce larger cavities, but it has poor water holding ability. Phalaenopsis orchids can grow well in bark because their roots have photosynthetic ability and can absorb moisture from the air.

Choosing between sphagnum moss and bark can be difficult because they both have their pros and cons. The best thing to do is to use a mixture of sphagnum moss and bark.

Orchids are known for their aesthetic qualities, and they are often used as decorative items in homes, offices, and public places. As spring approaches, orchids are at greater risk of developing a virus-like condition called mesophyll cell collapse. This condition results from the collapse of the leaves’ mesophyll cells due to exposure to overly low temperatures, and it is more likely to occur in early spring or late autumn.

Mesophyll Cell Collapse in Phalaenopsis Orchids

Mesophyll cell collapse usually affects developing leaves, especially those in Phalaenopsis orchids. Damage may occur after just two hours of exposure to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and it may be more severe if the temperature is lower. However, Phals with mature leaves can withstand a maximum of 8 hours of exposure to 35 degrees.

What Causes Mesophyll Cell Collapse?

Mesophyll refers to a soft tissue that is located between the upper and lower epidermis in a leaf, and it functions to facilitate photosynthesis. Also known as green parenchyma, it consists of unspecialized thin-walled cells separated by air spaces. When orchids are exposed to temperatures that are too low, their mesophyll cells may collapse. This usually happens on nights with the lowest temperatures. Symptoms of mesophyll collapse may not appear until weeks after the condition has developed.

How to Prevent Mesophyll Collapse?

Once mesophyll cell collapse has occurred, the damage is irreversible. As such, you should take the necessary precautions to prevent the problem. You can reduce the risk of mesophyll collapse in your Phalaenopsis orchids by making sure that the temperatures around them are at least 50 degrees. Using heaters and providing protection against cold winds can also help prevent the condition. If one of your orchids is affected by mesophyll cell collapse, you should segregate it from other plants.

How to Make an Orchid Basket Arrangement

An orchid basket arrangement makes a wonderful decorative item. Its stunning colors can help create a lively and refreshing atmosphere in your home or office, making your days brighter and more joyous. While an orchid basket arrangement may look complicated, it is actually very easy to make.

Follow these steps to create your very own orchid basket arrangement:

Choose a basket. Picking one that does not have arching handles is easier to work with and take into consideration the color of the basket does not compete with the orchids.
Cut out a piece of plastic from a garbage bag to make a liner inside the basket. The cut edges should be folded back near the rim of the basket.
Get Phalaenopsis orchids of different or similar colors and heights. You can even gather ferns and ivy to give the arrangement a fuller look!
Soak a piece of cotton in lemon juice and wipe the leaves to make them shine.
Place the orchids into the basket. You can place foam blocks under some of the plants to make them look taller. Put small pots on top of large ones to create a denser appearance. Then, tuck the ferns and ivy into the basket, and spread their leaves around the plants.

How to Troubleshoot Yellow Leaves on a Phalaenopsis Orchid

The appearance of the leaves reveals a lot about the health of your Phalaenopsis orchid. If the leaves are yellow, it means that you are not providing proper care for your orchid. There are a number of factors that can cause the leaves of an orchid to become discolored, including direct sunlight, low temperatures, and root rot.

Here are instructions on how to troubleshoot yellow leaves on a Phalaenopsis orchid:

The leaves of a Phalaenopsis orchid can burn and turn yellow if they are exposed to direct sunlight. As such, you should put your orchid in a place that receives sufficient indirect sunlight.
Overly low temperatures can also cause orchid leaves to turn yellow. Make sure the temperatures around your orchid are between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the day and 60 and 70 degrees at night.
Overwatering your Phal can lead to root rot, which can in turn cause its leaves to turn yellow. You should only water the plant when the top one inch of the potting medium is dry and the roots are white, and make sure there are enough holes in the pot to allow proper drainage. If your orchid is suffering from root rot but you see your plant still has some healthy green roots, trim the rotted roots and repot the plant in new media. Mist the leaves the first week in place of watering.
