It is important for Phalaenopsis orchid owners to be able to recognize the signs of orchid distress as soon as possible so that the ensuing plant can be helped prior to the orchid being permanently damaged beyond repair.

Phalaenopsis orchids are a more sensitive type of orchid breed. When the plants are subjected to excessive heat, the moisture that is contained in the plants tissues will evaporate which causes an imbalance called “transpiration.” Phalaenopsis orchids require that moisture be replaced in order to avoid dehydration.

Signs that a Phalaenopsis orchid is dehydrated include:

Heat stress

Leaves or plants turning yellow

Withering leaves

Sunburn

Leaves that appear leathery

In an attempt to save a wilted, dehydrated Phalaenopsis orchid, some people tend to overwater the failing orchid plant. Overwatering the orchid is not the way to rehydration and, instead, often causes the orchid to experience rotting within the plants root system. The best way to help a faltering Phalaenopsis orchid recover from dehydration is to be mindful of the heat that the plant was exposed to. Changing its location is a good idea so that it is not exposed to quite as much heat. Additionally, Phalaenopsis orchids may require more watering when temperatures are on the upswing.

Keeping a close eye on your beautiful Phalaenopsis orchid will help you catch any problems that arise early.

Unlike humans where adding sunscreen is an option when time is spent in the sun, Phalaenopsis orchids must instead live a somewhat sheltered—or better yet—filtered lifestyle. Phalaenopsis orchids will grow splendidly if proper care for their temperament is taken into consideration.

Sunlight and Your Phal Orchid

There are 20,000+ species of orchids. The Phalaenopsis orchid is one of the most prized species of plants that are found growing indoors throughout the United States. Owners of Phalaenopsis orchids often run into trouble with their orchids when they place the plant in a location where a robust amount of sunshine affects their ability to thrive.

Sheltering Your Orchid Plant

While Phalaenopsis orchids do enjoy natural light, they cannot withstand the blasts of heat that is associated with being placed in direct sunlight. Orchid growers recommend that Phalaenopsis orchids be placed in an area that is not exposed to direct sunlight where they will not become too hot. These delightful houseplants will flourish in humid climates that are warm, where they are sheltered behind a sheer curtain or dappled shade. The Phalaenopsis orchid will succeed when offered, at minimum, a half day of sunlight that is filtered. The best sunlight for a Phalaenopsis orchid can be found on the south or west facing window.

For most areas of the United States, May through September is the hottest months to endure. Careful watering considerations should be taken to ensure that the Phalaenopsis orchid is well watered, but never left wet and soggy. For the watering of Just Add Ice Orchids, you just add 3 ice cubes once a week—it's that simple! Always remember to let the roots dry out between waterings and do not over-water to avoid problems with the Phalaenopsis Orchid.

Today, we take a more in depth look into mealy bugs and how you can detect them on your plant.

Identifying Mealy Bugs

Mealy bugs can easily be identified in their adult form. The long tailed mealy bug is the easiest for most people to identify because of its long filaments on the backside of its body. Look for these pests to be varying in shades of white, pale pink or even blue in color. Orchid owners often find these pests on the underside of their Phalaenopsis orchid leaves, but they may also be hidden in other areas of the plant.

Unlike scale insects, which do not travel around a Phalaenopsis orchid, the mealy bug is considered to be a serious pest because of its ability to stay on the move and travel from place to place both within the Phalaenopsis orchid plant and even outside of the orchid plant.

Mealy Bugs on the Move

Mealy bugs in different life stages will exit the existing plant and take refuge under the potted plant, travel to a neighboring plant, hide in cracks and crevices where the plant is located, under rims of pots, and under trays where the orchid is located. One of the worst problems with Mealy Bugs is that the nymphs are so tiny that they are extremely difficult to see and they usually require a magnifying glass to locate them. Because of their tiny size, the little crawlers are able to hide or crawl from plant to plant with ease, which in turn will easily spread the mealy bug infestation. Mealy bugs will also travel to other ornamental plant species that are located nearby.

It is important to begin treatment of mealy bugs as soon as they are discovered. Mealy bugs can be removed more easily once they reach adulthood because they can be seen, but the younger generations are the most problematic pests. In order to bring a mealy bug infestation under control, it is recommended that mealy bugs be treated every 10 to 14 days.

Scale Insects

Scale insects are tiny insects that do not have visible legs or antennae. Scale will press tightly against the Phalaenopsis orchid that they are feeding upon. You will find the scale insects hiding on the undersides of the leaves, feeding upon the plant. Scale insects have long stylets, which are much longer than the insect itself. This invasive insect will feed slowly upon a plant reducing its vigor and, if not treated, its lifespan. Evidence of scale can be recognized when a plant begins to grow poorly or when leaves or spikes begin to die. On Phalaenopsis orchids, scale insects are often confused with mealy bugs because of the cotton-like appearance that they create.

Outdoors, scale is controlled by natural predators such as ladybugs and parasitic wasps, but indoors, they must be carefully treated by focusing on the scale insect nymphs or crawlers rather than the adults. Once scale insects reach adulthood, they are difficult to kill. Like mealy bugs, scale insects in their infancy can easily crawl from plant to plant, or accidentally be blown from place to place. Their tiny size makes hiding and infestation quite easy.

Mealy Bugs

Mealy bugs are another common threat to Phalaenopsis orchids. There are approximately 300 species of mealy bugs that are known in the United States and Canada, but reports state only 39 species of the pests tend to attack orchids. Like scale insects, mealy bugs are a serious threat to Phalaenopsis orchids. Failure to address a mealy bug infestation will result in a serious infestation of the pests.

Here’s How

A healthy Phalaenopsis orchid will delight you by displaying its colorful leaves, flowers and buds. But like any plant, this orchid goes through a life cycle that includes shedding old blooms and growing new ones.

If you want to encourage your orchid to stay in bloom or grow new buds, a few basic orchid tips should help you get there.

Water

As Just Add Ice Orchids recommends, just three ice cubes a week should keep your plant sufficiently hydrated throughout the blooming process. Watch your pots for signs of overwatering (damp or standing water on the potting material) or dehydration (drying out of the leaves) and adjust accordingly. However, when fertilizing, follow the direction below …

Fertilizer

Using fertilizer while your orchid is already in flower will help it grow new buds. Mix a balanced houseplant fertilizer with water at half the recommended strength – and don’t add ice! The week you fertilize, skip the three ice cubes and instead place the plant in the sink with the drainage holes exposed. Water with the fertilizer solution until you see it starting to run out of the bottom of the pot.

Temperature

Though a Phalaenopsis normally does best in warmer temperatures, a cooler environment can help trigger flowering. Find an area in your home or office where the temperature stays around 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your pot there for about a month.

Other Orchid Tips

Just Add Ice Orchids do best in indirect sunlight. While promoting new bud growth, keep direct sunlight out of the plant’s path.

Watch for a new spike growing from your pot – the root grows upward and the tip resembles the shape of a mitten.

Once the spike starts growing, support it with a stake. Avoid re-orienting your pots while the stake and buds grow – keeping them in a consistent position will aid the plant in growing a beautiful, arching display.

Your large orchid might seem like it needs more water, however it actually only needs a little bit of water each week to sustain itself and remain the beautiful plant that you've grown to love. Watering your orchid is important because it transfers the nutrients from the soil into the plant itself. However, in order to know exactly how much water it needs, it's important to understand the basics of orchid care. You should also keep a close eye on your plant to be sure it's not getting too much water.

The Results of Excess Moisture

Excess moisture can cause root rot in your orchid. When it gets too much water, this can cause the carbon dioxide to accumulate in the potting soil. The result is an impeded flow of oxygen to the root hairs of your orchid. It's hard to tell if your plant is getting too much water unless you watch it closely and you know what to look for.

How Much Water Does Your Orchid Really Need?

Is it true that your orchid only needs 1/4 cup of water every two weeks to survive? Just Add Ice Orchids make orchid care simple because they only need 3 ice cubes a week. It might help your peace of mind to try a simple test to be sure your orchid is getting enough water. Periodically, place a toothpick in the soil of your orchid. If it comes out clean, the orchid has enough water. If it doesn't, that means the plant has too much.

We make orchid care straight forward and simple. By following these instructions, your Just Add Ice Orchid can remain a beautiful part of your home for a long time.

The bud is the most sensitive part of the plant – a fact well known by the growers at Just Add Ice Orchids as they prepare their plants for delivery to one of the many stores that sell these colorful flowers. The way temperature, humidity and light levels change in transit can cause a trauma to the orchid and make it abort the buds.

Handle with Care

Just Add Ice takes steps to keep their buds thriving during transport from its main greenhouses at Green Circle Growers, one of the largest greenhouse operations in the Midwest, to retail centers across the United States. The growers choose only the healthiest plants, then pack and ship them carefully prior to delivery.

The plants are potted, then put into a protective sleeve

The sleeves go into trays to keep them upright in the box

The trays are placed in a box with heat packs to keep a constant temperature throughout transportation

Your Part in Orchid Care

Once you get your Phalaenopsis home, keep an eye on the buds as you find the ideal setting for your pot. A warm, more humid environment – free of direct sunlight or draft – will help your buds retain optimum health and bloom into flowers that will delight you for a long time to come.

The causes of premature bud or bloom loss (called bud blast) can range from a sudden change in room temperature to over-watering.

Your colorful, hardy Phalaenopsis plants need not be a victim of early bud loss when you use orchid tips from Just Add Ice Orchids to keep them in optimum health:

Check the temperature. Orchids thrive best in a warmer, humid environment (65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit). Make sure your plants are in a consistently warm area of your home or office to see if this makes a positive difference.

Attend to the water. Orchids by nature do not require large amounts of hydration. Just Add Ice Orchids only need three ice cubes added to the pot each week. Don’t let the roots sit in excess water – that’s a sure way to kill off buds before they have a chance to bloom.

Remove the fruit bowl. That innocent-looking bowl of apples, bananas or oranges near your plants may be the culprit. Ripening fruit, burning candles and incense all emit ethylene gas that can cause bud blast.

If the temperature, humidity, water and ethylene all appear to be in order and your plants are still shedding buds prematurely, consider repotting the orchid. Also, check for pests that may be present.

When considering to buy a Phalaenopsis orchid plant, it is important to buy a plant that is green and healthy looking. The flowers on the plant should look healthy and vibrant and it is not uncommon for additional buds to be present on the plant that you are purchasing. The green stems on the plant should be strong and healthy looking with no points of discoloration.

Conduct a Quick Check

Always be sure to check for root rot before purchasing a Phalaenopsis orchid. Take a sniff of the plant as well. Any foul smells are an indication that rotting has occurred and another plant should be chosen. The leaves on a Phalaenopsis orchid plant will also give you important information. Spots on the leaves could mean that the plant has a virus or that it has been blistered in the sun.

Leaves that have yellow spots could mean that the plant is suffering from an infestation of mealy bugs or spider mites. Look for spider mites on the undersides of the leaves. These occur if the leaves are subjected to overly dry conditions. In severe cases, the entire leaf may turn yellow by spider mites.

Keeping your eyes out for pests, smells, spots and viruses will help get you on your way to purchasing a healthy Phalaenopsis orchid.

There are many ways that children can personalize the pot that the Phalaenopsis orchid is placed in that will show Mom how much they care.

For younger kids…

Little children love stickers and they would love to go to town decorating a beautiful ceramic glazed pot with their favorite stickers.

You can keep things simple and paint a clay pot with chalkboard paint. Then let your little ones write a special message right on the pot!

Another option would be to paint a paper Mache clay pot with acrylic paints. It might take a couple of coats of paint. After the paint is completely dry, draw out the word “Mommy” or “Mom” on the flower pot in block lettering with a Sharpie. Let the kids paint the inside of the words whatever color they like. Dip the kid’s fingertips in different colors of paint to make fingertip polka dots around the rim of the flower pot. The final decorating step is to use Mod Podge to cover the exterior of the pot completely to seal in the beautiful artwork. Place a beautiful Phalaenopsis orchid inside of the new flower pot, being sure to leave it inside of its original clear plastic grower pot.

For older kids…

Using specialty glass paint, paintable clings, adhesive silkscreen with detailed designs or their own powerful imagination on clear vases that are short or tall, plain oversized coffee mugs, or even simple mason jars are the perfect avenue to showcase a teen’s personal style when a Phalaenopsis orchid is used.

For families with several children, Mom would surely enjoy a sweet grouping of these beautiful decorated pots or containers on her dining room table, bedroom dresser, bathroom, or any other location in the home.

The tradition of a bride wearing a wedding veil is believed to be introduced as far back as ancient Rome. The bridal veil covered the brides face so that her features would be confused by evil spirits that were attracted to the bride. In Medieval times, the veil was used as a symbol of modesty, purity, and chastity. Another idea of where the bride’s veil came from was for those who would partake in arranged marriages. Many believe that the veil was used as a way of hiding what the bride looked like from the groom so that he would not back out before the I do’s were complete.

Getting with the Modern Times

Fast forward to 2013 and many women are saying goodbye to ancient traditions of the past and some are giving up the veil completely once they decide to marry. Not wanting to have hair without decoration on their wedding day, many women are turning to other types of fun hair pieces to show off their lovely locks.

Brides are finding that you don’t need to have a tropical themed wedding to use beautiful orchid flowers in their hair. Plastic flowers, of course, are a bit taboo, but brides can choose from a variety of elegant flowers that will make them look spectacular.

Simply Elegant

The Phalaenopsis orchid is a splendid choice for brides that are looking for something chic and elegant to decorate their hair. Orchids will lend an artistic and classy flair for day and nighttime wedding events. When Phalaenopsis orchids are in full bloom, the colorful flowers can easily be snipped at the stem and clipped into the hair. These smaller flowers can be placed in clusters or alone just inches apart for an exquisite wedding day look.

As a special gift for the bride, the Phalaenopsis orchid that is used for her wedding day should be given as a special gift of remembrance. Each year as new buds and flowers form, the bride will be reminded of her wedding day and the people who helped make it special.

The flowers of a Phalaenopsis orchid look elegant regardless if they are a deep and vibrant fuchsia pink or a hint of color in the blushing pink orchid. The beautiful Phalaenopsis orchid lasts longer than many other types of flowers, but for those who have never owned an orchid, having a once flourishing plant suddenly look empty as it loses its gorgeous flowers can be alarming.

The question is often asked to orchid experts…Did I do something to make the Phalaenopsis orchid lose its flowers or is my orchid dying?

The great news is that in most instances, there is actually nothing wrong with the Phalaenopsis orchid plant that loses its flowers after months of blooming!

What is Actually Happening with Your Orchid

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end…which includes the lovely blooms of an orchid. The flowering of an orchid will last anywhere from one month to three months depending on a few different factors. After an orchid has finished its flowering cycle, the Phalaenopsis orchid plant will go into a period of dormancy. During the dormancy time, the plant will conserve and build up its energy reserves as it readies itself for the next flowering season.

Once the Phalaenopsis orchid loses its blooms, it is time to give the plant a trim. New orchid buds will never grow on a stem that is brown or yellow so snipping the stem is required to help in the regrowth process. You can also choose to help the re-blooming process of the Phalaenopsis orchid by trimming healthy green stems back to a node, or by removing the entire flower spike one inch from the base of the plant so that important energy is returned to the roots and leaves for a stronger plant base.

Today, we will go over how you can create your very own!

To build a mini orchid terrarium display:

Step One…

Wash the terrarium tank thoroughly before to ensure that any left-over salts or diseases are removed.

Step Two…

Decide which types of plants will be able to co-exist with your mini Phalaenopsis orchids. Miniatures Phalaenopsis orchids will do well in small terrariums, and small ivy, fibrous-rooted begonia and small ferns can be grown with the Phalaenopsis orchids since they all enjoy the humidity that exists within a terrarium.

Step Three…

Be careful where the mini Phalaenopsis orchid terrarium is placed. Direct sunlight will act as an oven for any size terrarium. Colder area placement of a Phalaenopsis orchid terrarium is not good as the orchids must be kept warm but not hot. Mid-level light levels along with moderate temperatures are best for terrariums with Phalaenopsis orchids.

Step Four…

Add two inches of stones to the bottom of the well cleaned and rinsed terrarium. All stones placed in the terrarium must be thoroughly cleaned to ensure that nothing harmful will be transferred to the elegant mini Phalaenopsis orchids. Placing one inch of water in the rocks will create a humid environment for the orchids to live within. Be sure that the roots of the orchids are not placed in any standing water as they will rot. Note: Some people choose to use soil at the bottom of their terrarium. While pretty to look at, it is easy for disease to be introduced to a terrarium when soil is used as the substrate.

Step Five…

Leaving the mini Phalaenopsis orchids in their original clear grower pot is the best way to ensure proper growth and the least amount of damage to the bright and beautiful plants. After the bottom stones are in place, set one or two mini Phalaenopsis orchids inside of the terrarium. Using sphagnum moss to hide the potted plants will not only give a finished touch, the moss will give a fantastic looking dimension to the terrarium.

Step Six…

If the terrarium happens to look dry, just add ice to add some moisture and humidity into their self- contained environment. If the terrarium looks continuously wet along the walls, open for short periods of time to help eliminate some of the humidity. Be mindful of cold areas, cold breezes, or hot areas that will damage the Phalaenopsis orchids.

You will find that with a little work and minimal attention, a spectacular and uplifting terrarium can be created with our colorful mini Phalaenopsis orchids. You can view another way to make a terrarium in a different post.

Want to wow the mother-to-be with a one-of-a-kind present? Take a tip from the Ancient Greeks: get her an orchid!

Here’s why: In Ancient Greece, it was believed that orchids had the power to determine a baby’s gender. Fathers would eat a large tuber if a male child was desired or mothers would eat a smaller tuber in hopes of a daughter. Pink orchids, in particular, were associated with affection.

More Than the Greeks

It wasn’t just the Ancient Greeks that looked to orchids as a symbol and sign of fertility. The Chinese believed orchids encouraged couples in producing more than one offspring. If you go with the gift of orchids, you might consider attaching a note that explains the details of the either culture’s beliefs; wishing the expectant parents well in building their family!

An orchid with healthy roots will grow well and produce beautiful flowers, while one that has bad roots will not survive for long. Proper watering and choosing the right potting material are essential to keeping the roots of your orchid strong and healthy.

Follow these instructions to help your Phalaenopsis orchid grow healthy roots:

First of all, you have to choose a light potting material for your Phal, such as peat moss, sphagnum moss, or bark chips. A light potting material has sufficient water holding capacity to enable the orchid to stay healthy and provides enough aeration for the roots.

If the leaves of your orchid are becoming a little crinkled or its pods are shrinking, it means that it needs watering. It is important to know that an orchid is better off being too dry than too wet. Overwatering can result in root rot.

Keep watering your orchid until the potting material is completely moist. The quantity of water and the frequency of watering may vary depending on the potting material used and the temperature and humidity in the growing area.

Use filtered water containing as little salt as possible to moisten your orchid. The roots of your orchid can break if they take in too much salt, resulting in discoloration or death.

Morning is the best time to water your orchid, especially if you are growing it outdoors. Watering in the morning enables excess water to be drained or evaporated before the temperature becomes colder.

Many people love orchids. To paraphrase the late Rodney King, “Can’t they all get along?”

Short answer: If you have Phalaenopsis Orchids, yes they can!

Many people still believe that nibbling on a beautiful orchid is toxic to Kitty. While it’s never a good idea for your cat to nibble on most plants, these orchids (which are also known as Moth Orchids) are non-toxic to both cats and dogs.

Most Houseplants Aren’t Toxic

Some houseplants definitely are dangerous to your family pet, but most are not. Common houseplants or cut flowers we use to beautify our homes can be dangerous to pets should they eat them. Daffodils, aloe vera and baby’s breath are three.

But most houseplants pose no danger to your pets. Safe plants commonly seen in homes include (according to ASPCA.com) the Christmas cactus, bamboo, areca or golden palm, the button fern, and more.

For a searchable list of toxic and non-toxic houseplants, check out the ASPCA’s searchable database.

Still, it’s wise to keep your cat and dog away from all plants, including your orchids. Pesticides and fertilizers may have been used on the plant even if you make every effort to keep the fertilizer/pesticide as far away from the leaves as possible (the leaves generally are what cats go for; try misting the leaves and sprinkling them with either cinnamon or cayenne pepper).

Either keep your orchid in a spot that’s inaccessible to your pets, or keep a sharp eye out on your four-legged family members and shoo them away when they draw near.

Are you thinking of adding orchids to your home? Phalaenopsis Orchids are easy to care for, are non-toxic and can warm a room with their beauty for months at a time (they can bloom for several weeks). In fact, if your orchid’s blooms have fallen, we offer a free guide to orchid reblooming that can help you get them quickly back to blooming. There are two kinds of potting materials that are commonly used for growing Phalaenopsis orchids, and they are sphagnum moss and bark.

Before we discuss the pros and cons of sphagnum moss and bark, let us take a look at the properties and functions of an ideal potting material for Phalaenopsis orchids.

Supplies water and nutrients to orchids

Maintains adequate aeration around the roots

Provides sufficient room for root development

Allows good root anchorage

Free of toxic materials

Absorbs water quickly and allows adequate drainage

Absorbs nutrients well and release them slowly

Should not decompose too quickly

No potting material can meet all these requirements, but sphagnum moss and bark are more suitable for Phalaenopsis orchids than other types of potting materials. Sphagnum moss is a fine substrate, and it can hold water better than bark. Its water retention ability makes it an excellent potting material for young orchids. However, it cannot provide proper aeration for root respiration. It can also be difficult to transplant an orchid that is potted in sphagnum moss. Bark, on the other hand, provides good aeration for the roots and helps produce larger cavities, but it has poor water holding ability. Phalaenopsis orchids can grow well in bark because their roots have photosynthetic ability and can absorb moisture from the air.

Choosing between sphagnum moss and bark can be difficult because they both have their pros and cons. The best thing to do is to use a mixture of sphagnum moss and bark.

While most people admire them for their good looks, others have found practical uses for them. Since a long time ago, people from various parts of the world have used orchids for medicinal purposes. However, the use of orchids in medicine has declined over the years because not enough research has been done to determine their effectiveness and adverse effects.

Orchids in Chinese Medicine

The medicinal properties of orchids were first discovered by the Chinese. Emperor Shen Nung, the “Father of Chinese Medicine”, mentioned a dendrobium species and bletilla striata in his medical writings in the 28th century BC. The Chinese continues to use orchids for medicinal purposes until today, most commonly in the form of medicinal tea. Dried dendrobium is believed to possess medicinal properties that can help treat cancer, strengthen the immune system, and improve eyesight.

Orchid Beverage in Turkey

In Turkey, orchids are used for making a traditional beverage called Salep. Salep is a type of flour that is produced by grinding tubers of orchis militaris, orchis mascula, and other kinds of orchids with ovoid tubers. This beverage is also consumed in Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Iran, and it was popular during the time of the Ottoman Empire. It is said to be effective in curing sore throat, digestive problems, diarrhea, and gum disease.

Orchids with Medicinal Properties

Other types of orchids that may possess medicinal properties include orchis latifolia, eulophia campestris, vanda tessellate, and vanda roxburghii. It is believed that these orchids have certain antibacterial substances and phytochemicals that can help in the treatment of certain illnesses.

This condition results from the collapse of the leaves’ mesophyll cells due to exposure to overly low temperatures, and it is more likely to occur in early spring or late autumn.

Mesophyll Cell Collapse in Phalaenopsis Orchids

Mesophyll cell collapse usually affects developing leaves, especially those in Phalaenopsis orchids. Damage may occur after just two hours of exposure to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and it may be more severe if the temperature is lower. However, Phals with mature leaves can withstand a maximum of 8 hours of exposure to 35 degrees.

What Causes Mesophyll Cell Collapse?

Mesophyll refers to a soft tissue that is located between the upper and lower epidermis in a leaf, and it functions to facilitate photosynthesis. Also known as green parenchyma, it consists of unspecialized thin-walled cells separated by air spaces. When orchids are exposed to temperatures that are too low, their mesophyll cells may collapse. This usually happens on nights with the lowest temperatures. Symptoms of mesophyll collapse may not appear until weeks after the condition has developed.

How to Prevent Mesophyll Collapse?

Once mesophyll cell collapse has occurred, the damage is irreversible. As such, you should take the necessary precautions to prevent the problem. You can reduce the risk of mesophyll collapse in your Phalaenopsis orchids by making sure that the temperatures around them are at least 50 degrees. Using heaters and providing protection against cold winds can also help prevent the condition. If one of your orchids is affected by mesophyll cell collapse, you should segregate it from other plants.

Its stunning colors can help create a lively and refreshing atmosphere in your home or office, making your days brighter and more joyous. While an orchid basket arrangement may look complicated, it is actually very easy to make.

Follow these steps to create your very own orchid basket arrangement:

Choose a basket. Picking one that does not have arching handles is easier to work with and take into consideration the color of the basket does not compete with the orchids.

Cut out a piece of plastic from a garbage bag to make a liner inside the basket. The cut edges should be folded back near the rim of the basket.

Get Phalaenopsis orchids of different or similar colors and heights. You can even gather ferns and ivy to give the arrangement a fuller look!

Soak a piece of cotton in lemon juice and wipe the leaves to make them shine.

Place the orchids into the basket. You can place foam blocks under some of the plants to make them look taller. Put small pots on top of large ones to create a denser appearance. Then, tuck the ferns and ivy into the basket, and spread their leaves around the plants.

If you are covering the pots and the roots with sphagnum moss, moisten the moss with a small amount of water and spread it around the base of the orchids. Use greening pins to secure the moss in place.

Today, we will continue with our list of top 10 most popular orchids:

Dendrobium

Dendrobium orchids are a preferred choice among orchid growers because they do not require much maintenance. They are considered “all-purpose” orchids, and they are capable of producing some of the most beautiful flowers despite receiving little care. These orchids come in an extensive variety of colors and shapes.

Cattleya

Cattleya orchids are characterized by large, flamboyant flowers, which can range in size from 2 to 6 inches. The flowers can be of any color, except black and true blue. These orchids are suitable for you if you live in an area where there is an abundance of natural light.

Laelia

Laelia orchids usually have short stems, and they produce star-shaped flowers that are pink or purple in color. They bloom in spring or fall, and their preferred growing conditions can range from dry and cool to warm and humid conditions, depending on their species. They are close relatives of cattleya orchids.

Oncidium

Oncidium orchids are sometimes called spray orchids because their branches look like they are “spraying out”. Their flowers have a large lip and frilly edges, and they come in different shades of yellow, red, pink, and white.

Miltonias

Miltonias are easily identifiable by their large, splendorous flowers. Their flowers are long-lasting, and they emit an exotic fragrance that is somewhat similar to that of roses. Due to their pleasant scent, they are excellent plants for growing indoors.

Odontoglossums

Odontoglossums are relatively easy to maintain, and they produce large beautiful flowers. However, they need high levels of humidity in order to flourish.

Some types of orchids are more sought after than others, either because of their attractive appearances, blooming capabilities, or ease of growth.

Here is a list of the 10 most popular orchids:

Phalaenopsis

Phalaenopsis orchids are presently the most commonly grown orchids, mainly because they can easily flourish in a home environment. They are characterized by long stems, thick leaves, and delicate moth-like flowers, and they come in a wide range of colors and shades. They are a popular choice among beginner growers, because they are hardy enough to withstand mistakes that are commonly made by beginners.

Cymbidium

Also known as boat orchids, cymbidium orchids have long and thin leaves that can grow to a length of four feet. Due to their long leaves, they never fail to impress whether they are blooming or not. The flowers of these orchids can come in many different colors, and they can last for about ten weeks.

Paphiopedilum

These orchids are also referred to as lady slipper orchids, and they are widely hybridized because of their stunning flowers. They usually produce only one flower, but the flower is very unique and elegant. It is this special characteristic that makes them endearing to orchid growers.

Vandas

Some types of orchids grow better in hanging baskets than pots, and vandas are one of them. All orchids need some air circulation around their roots, but these orchids need it even more.

We will talk about several other popular orchids in our next post. If you have any questions about orchids, feel free to visit our Facebook page.

If the leaves are yellow, it means that you are not providing proper care for your orchid. There are a number of factors that can cause the leaves of an orchid to become discolored, including direct sunlight, low temperatures, and root rot.

Here are instructions on how to troubleshoot yellow leaves on a Phalaenopsis orchid:

The leaves of a Phalaenopsis orchid can burn and turn yellow if they are exposed to direct sunlight. As such, you should put your orchid in a place that receives sufficient indirect sunlight.

Overly low temperatures can also cause orchid leaves to turn yellow. Make sure the temperatures around your orchid are between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the day and 60 and 70 degrees at night.

Overwatering your Phal can lead to root rot, which can in turn cause its leaves to turn yellow. You should only water the plant when the top one inch of the potting medium is dry and the roots are white, and make sure there are enough holes in the pot to allow proper drainage. If your orchid is suffering from root rot but you see your plant still has some healthy green roots, trim the rotted roots and repot the plant in new media. Mist the leaves the first week in place of watering.
