A month was a long time to be gone. But there is no way I can possibly thank my guest posters enough. They all have their busy lives, yet they all stepped in to help me in my time of need. How spectacular is that? It’s humbling. I’ll tell you that much. Thank you, my friends!</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/guestcollage.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="The Must List bloggers" border="0" alt="The Must List bloggers" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/guestcollage_thumb.jpg" width="614" height="472" /></a></p>
<p>It started out that I just needed a break. I knew April was going to be particularly busy for me (work, school, parenting, wife-ing, etc.), so I asked my friends for a life line. What I didn’t know was that I would be struck with a major blow. My apologies for Debby Downing this, but my beloved grandfather passed away.<a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Pop.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="Pop" border="0" alt="Pop" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Pop_thumb.jpg" width="475" height="712" /></a></p>
<p>In case you’re new here, I am <em>madly</em> in love with my grandparents. You can hopefully see some of that <a href="http://justagirlblog.com/nothing/">here</a>, <a href="http://justagirlblog.com/christmas-in-review/">here</a>, <a href="http://justagirlblog.com/loss/">here</a>, and <a href="http://justagirlblog.com/brooch-magnets/">here</a> (believe me—I spared you several more).</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/IMG_0318.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="grandparents" border="0" alt="grandparents" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/IMG_0318_thumb.jpg" width="629" height="419" /></a></p>
<p>My grandmother <a href="http://justagirlblog.com/loss/">passed away</a> one year ago, and now they are together. I’m trying to find comfort in that. <em>Trying.</em></p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/IMG_1942.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="grandfather" border="0" alt="grandfather" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/IMG_1942_thumb.jpg" width="632" height="421" /></a></p>
<p>So I guess life has a peculiar way of working out. While I needed my blog friends to help at JaG, I had <em><strong>no</strong></em> idea how significant that help would be. Thank you to them and thank you to YOU for your sweet comments for my guests, your friendly e-mails checking in, and for sticking with me!</p>

Back again. Justa’s back, Justa’s back….if you’re an Eminem fan, you totally hear it. If not, you’re just annoyed right now. Sorry. I’m back!! I’ll return again tomorrow with all kinds of ‘splaining about my absence, but I have a little DIY project to talk about first.</p>
<p>The folks at <a href="http://www.lowes.com/">Lowes</a> were gracious enough to sign me onto their team, and I missed the assignment for April. I figure I better get on that right away, eh?</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/DIYwasherdryerpedestal001.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="DIY washer dryer pedestal-001" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/DIYwasherdryerpedestal001_thumb.jpg" alt="DIY washer dryer pedestal-001" width="381" height="552" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>One of my <a href="http://justagirlblog.com/house-goals/">home goals</a> for the year was to tackle the laundry room. Sure…it serves its purpose, but I wouldn’t call it the prettiest room in the house.</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/laundryroombefore.jpg"><img style="display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border: 0px;" title="laundry room before" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/laundryroombefore_thumb.jpg" alt="laundry room before" width="339" height="468" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/laundrycubbies.jpg"><img style="display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border: 0px;" title="laundry cubbies" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/laundrycubbies_thumb.jpg" alt="laundry cubbies" width="313" height="469" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Phase 1 was to build a pedestal and get those machines elevated! I found quite a few simplistic plans that were helpful, but in the words of my husband, I “like to make things difficult.” Meaning—I wanted drawers. Another meaning? Call in my father-in-law. We’re gonna be measuring. A lot.</p>
<p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pedestal frame" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/pedestalframe_thumb.jpg" alt="pedestal frame" width="594" height="396" border="0" /></p>
<p>We basically went with 2&#215;4’s in the pattern above. We thought that would give the most support for the machines. Of course, measuring for the drawers took about three years. Once it was figured out, we covered the entire base with some inexpensive plywood.</p>
<p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="x" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/washerdryerpedestalplans_thumb.jpg" alt="x" width="376" height="563" border="0" /></p>
<p>In order to trim out the front, we cut out the pieces separately. You could use a jig saw to cut out the shape of the drawers (leaving you no seams), but that seemed impossibly picky. We opted for some seams. And way too many nail holes. <img src='http://justagirlblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/pedestaltrimwork.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pedestal trimwork" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/pedestaltrimwork_thumb.jpg" alt="pedestal trimwork" width="614" height="409" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>The drawers were pretty simple construction. Some wood glue and nails basically keep them together. We purchased some inexpensive drawer slides (thank you, Lowes!) and attached them to the drawer and the inside of the pedestal. Again—measure, measure, measure.</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/pedestaldrawer.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pedestal drawer" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/pedestaldrawer_thumb.jpg" alt="pedestal drawer" width="615" height="410" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Once the drawers were fitted, we topped it all off with 1/2” plywood. We left about an inch overhang on the front side and glued a trim piece all around to cover the rough edges.</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/drawerframe.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="drawer frame" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/drawerframe_thumb.jpg" alt="drawer frame" width="611" height="407" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>For the drawer fronts, we used some scrap MDF. I wanted it to be more finished than the rest since it will be the most exposed portion. We again attached it with some wood glue and nails.</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/diiydrawers.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="diiy drawers" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/diiydrawers_thumb.jpg" alt="diiy drawers" width="617" height="411" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>And then? I forgot to take pictures. Seriously? Who knows what I was thinking. Basically, I trimmed out the drawers and exposed edges with a couple different size trim pieces.</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/drawertrim.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="drawer trim" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/drawertrim_thumb.jpg" alt="drawer trim" width="619" height="412" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>I’m so excited to have so much extra storage underneath now! While it was a LOT more work to build the drawers, it was definitely worth it.</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/washerdryerpedestaldrawer.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="washer dryer pedestal drawer" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/washerdryerpedestaldrawer_thumb.jpg" alt="washer dryer pedestal drawer" width="629" height="441" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>As for the installation of this bad boy in a narrow laundry room…don’t ask. I’ll let the picture speak for itself.</p>
<p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pedestal installation" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/IMG_8874_thumb.jpg" alt="pedestal installation" width="398" height="596" border="0" /></p>
<p>You may notice the absence of pulls on the drawers. I ordered them, but they haven’t arrived yet. Don’t worry—I’ll show ‘em off when they do!</p>
<p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="laundry pedestals" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/laundrypedestals_thumb.jpg" alt="laundry pedestals" width="407" height="564" border="0" /></p>

She’s such a fantastic person that it was an easy decision to ask her to talk about relationships in blogging. Have fun!</p>

<p>Hey there! I am so happy to be hanging out with JAG readers today! And I am so glad I get to talk about connecting with others in your blogging community. Heck! I’m just glad I get to<strong> talk</strong>. <img class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" style="border-style: none;" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/wlEmoticon-smile7.png" alt="Smile" /> Talking is one of my favorite things to do. If you have ever met me in real life, you know that I can talk the paint off a wall!   Blogging over the past three years has provided a great way for me to <strong><em>talk</em></strong> to even more people, more of the time. Woo to the hoo! I can honestly say that the best thing that has come out of blogging has been the amazing friendships that I have made with other bloggers and my readers. Some of those friendships are just online, and some of those online friendships have become real life friendships.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/girls1.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="girls" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/girls_thumb.jpg" alt="girls" width="544" height="409" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Just look at these beautiful ladies! I know you recognize most of them. <img class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" style="border-style: none;" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/wlEmoticon-smile7.png" alt="Smile" /> They started out my online friends, and then I had the pleasure of meeting them in real life…some of them many times! What a blessing!   <strong><em><span style="font-size: medium;">So how can you build friendships in the blogging community?</span></em></strong>     <span style="font-family: appleberry; font-size: medium;">Here are my three favorite ways:</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">1. Create a Facebook fan page for your blog.</span></strong> I have had my <a href="http://www.facebook.com/BeneathMyHeart?ref=tn_tnmn">Beneath My Heart fan page</a> for a couple of years, but I have to be honest that I have only been using it as a tool for connecting more with my readers since January. It has been so much fun to use my <a href="http://www.facebook.com/BeneathMyHeart?ref=tn_tnmn">facebook fan page</a>to answer readers’ questions, share my posts, highlight other blogger’s work, and allow other bloggers to link their projects up to my page.</p>
<p><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="image" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image16.png" alt="image" width="614" height="299" border="0" /></p>
<p><strong>Here are some other reasons to create a facebook fan page for your blog…</strong> <strong>*</strong>Basically, everyone’s on Facebook. It’s just a fact. <strong>*</strong>Facebook is the largest social network, with over 800 million users, making it the most effective platform to promote your blog. <strong>*</strong>Facebook is growing faster than Twitter. <strong>*</strong>I find a lot of my readers are more likely to comment on my facebook page than on my blog posts. So this makes Facebook a great place for me to form friendships with my readers.   I know there are many more ways that I can utilize my facebook fan page to connect with my readers, and I am continuing to work on it.</p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">2. Join Twitter.</span></strong> I think Twitter scares some people. If you were like me, I thought you could only use twitter on your phone. Then you would receive a “tweet” every time someone you followed on twitter posted an update. I thought it was the craziest thing I had ever heard of, and I thought only celebrities used Twitter. Honestly, I didn’t really care what Ashton Kutcher had for lunch and didn’t really want to know when Taylor Lautner was working out. (Okay, maybe I did.) Let me think about that….</p>
<p><a href="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image17.png"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="image" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image_thumb2.png" alt="image" width="452" height="301" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Oops! I digress. But anyway, I just didn’t see the use of Twitter in my life. Until I was introduced to <a href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/">Tweetdeck</a> at Blissdom a few years ago.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="image" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image18.png" alt="image" width="216" height="188" border="0" /></a><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/">TweetDeck</a></strong> is a social media dashboard application for management of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter">Twitter</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook">Facebook</a> accounts.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="image" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image19.png" alt="image" width="473" height="409" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>“The primary benefits of <a href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/">TweetDeck</a> are its ability to show you everything you want to see at once, in an organized column format. It defaults with columns of @Replies, DM’s, and AllFriends. You can keep or delete those columns (and bring them back again if you choose).” <a href="http://www.joehageonline.com/2009/02/02/what-is-tweetdeck-tweetdeck-explained/">source</a>   I do not spend a ton of time of Tweetdeck, but I usually have it open in a window on my computer while I am blogging. I like to check my Tweetdeck every once in a while to see what other bloggers are posting or talking about. If I see that one of my blog friends wrote a great post, I can retweet that post to all of my twitter followers. And some of my blog friends will do the same for me. I view more blog posts via Tweetdeck than I do any other blog “reader.” I can also send Direct Messages, which are private messages that only the sender and receiver can view. I DM my sister a lot. <img class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" style="border-style: none;" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/wlEmoticon-smile7.png" alt="Smile" /> I may also DM a blog friend if I needed to ask them a question that I didn’t want the whole world to see. Twitter and Tweetdeck are great places for my readers to reach me as well. I have many readers who will ask me a blog question, and it shows up in my “mention” column on Tweetdeck. Then I am able to quickly answer them back. Many of my closest blog friendships began on Twitter.</p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">3. Leave comments on other blogs.</span></strong>I can honestly say that some of my greatest friendships in the blogging community began from a single comment on my blog. Now I am not talking about just any comment, like “Great Project! Way to go!” Although I love those kind of comments, it is the readers that leave genuine, meaningful comments that I feel the greatest desire to respond to.</p>
<p><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="bmh card" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/bmh-card_thumb.jpg" alt="bmh card" width="409" height="409" border="0" /></p>
<p><strong><em>Genuine comments ignite a response.</em></strong> Those are the bloggers that I want to go visit or develop a relationship with. But don’t try to “fake” genuine comments. They are super easy to spot. Just sayin’… If you truly like a project or post that a blogger wrote, leave a meaningful comment to let them know it. It will be received well and be greatly appreciated.   Case in point: One of the best commenters in blogland is Richella from <a href="http://www.impartinggrace.com/">Imparting Grace</a>. How do I know? Because she has left a ton of precious comments on my blog, especially when my mom was diagnosed with cancer and passed away 2 1/2 years ago. Richella’s comments touched my heart deeply because they were always so warm and heartfelt. She and I became great blog friends, which lead to us being roommates at Blissdom last year! How cool is that?! <a href="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image20.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto; display: block; float: none;" title="image" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image_thumb3.png" alt="image" width="309" height="409" /></a></p>
<p>Another great commenter… Marty from <a href="http://astrollthrulife.blogspot.com/">A Stroll Thru Life.</a> Isn’t she precious?!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image21.png"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="image" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image_thumb4.png" alt="image" width="137" height="150" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Marty was one of my very first commenters on my blog over three years ago. She is faithful, consistent, and kind in all of her comments. Though I have never met Marty in person, I adore her and consider her my dear friend.   <strong>Comments</strong> make <strong><em>connections. </em></strong>It is my readers who consistently leave comments on my blog that I begin to feel connected to and friendships begin to form. It’s an awesome thing!     I know there are many other ways to form friendships in blog world, but these are three that have worked for me. Building friendships and community through your blog is probably the very best part of blogging.   <em><strong></strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">What have you done to develop friendships through your blog? I would love to know!</span></strong></em>   Oh! and by the way! I would love to connect with <strong>YOU </strong>too! Please come by and see me at <a href="http://www.beneathmyheart.net">Beneath My Heart</a>. <a href="http://www.beneathmyheart.net"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="buttonbmh" src="http://www.beneathmyheart.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/buttonbmh.png" alt="buttonbmh" width="204" height="112" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>You can also connect with me on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/BeneathMyHeart?ref=tn_tnmn">facebook</a> and <a href="http://www.twitter.com/beneathmyheart">twitter</a>! I’m looking forward to making many new friends this year!</p>

How one girl can take on so much is beyond me, but I’m so thankful that we get to benefit from it! Of course, all that work means that she’s quite the savvy blogger. She knows all the <em>ins</em> and <em>outs </em>of…well…everything! I could sit down with her for hours to pick her brain, but here’s just a sampling of what she knows!</p>
<p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Infarrantly" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Infarrantly_thumb.jpg" alt="Infarrantly" width="520" height="414" border="0" /></p>
<p>Hey JaG readers, this is Beckie from <a href="http://www.infarrantlycreative.net/">Infarrantly Creative</a>, <a href="http://knockoffdecor.com/">Knock off Décor</a> and <a href="http://roadkillrescue.net/">Roadkill Rescue</a>. Yes I know…I am crazy. Chris asked me to talk about my must haves for blogging. I am kind of a gadget girl and I am into anything that will make my life or blogging easier. So here are my “I can’t live without” tips to making blogging easier.</p>
<p><strong>1. Windows Live Writer</strong> I do all of my blog writing in <a href="http://download.cnet.com/Windows-Live-Writer-for-Windows-XP/3000-10247_4-10572482.html">Windows Live Writer</a> (sorry Mac users, this isn’t available for you, boo!). It is a software program that you sync your blog to and you do all the writing of your posts in that program. It is wonderful because you don’t have to be connected to the internet to write a post. You also don’t need to upload your pictures &#8211; you just drag them where you want them in your post in Windows Live Writer. If you post in blogger or WordPress – this little nugget will change your life. Your welcome. <a href="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/wlw-logo.png"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="wlw-logo" src="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/wlw-logo_thumb.png" alt="wlw-logo" width="416" height="271" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><strong>2. </strong><a href="http://www.rafflecopter.com"><strong>Rafflecopter</strong></a> I run about 4-6 giveaways and month and <a href="http://www.rafflecopter.com">Rafflecopter</a> has made it so much easier to keep track of. You login to Rafflecopter and set your giveaway up and then they give you code that you then add to your giveaway post. All of the entries are stored on Rafflecopter so they don’t clog up your comment section. You also can announce the winner onto the widget when the giveaway has ended and you email the winner from the site as well. This is what the widget looks like on your post.</p>
<p><a href="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/rafflecopter.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="rafflecopter" src="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/rafflecopter_thumb.jpg" alt="rafflecopter" width="317" height="430" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><strong> 3. Google Next Bookmarklet</strong> Do you read blogs via Google Reader? You can install the Google Next Bookmarklet into your browser and then you just click a button to see the next blog. You can find the &#8220;Next&#8221; bookmarklet on the <a href="http://www.google.com/reader/settings/">Settings page</a> under the Goodies tab.</p>
<p><a href="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/google-next.png"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="google next" src="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/google-next_thumb.png" alt="google next" width="575" height="323" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Google says ”The <strong>next bookmark</strong> is an innovative way to read your subscriptions. It allows you to use Google Reader through just one link &#8211; clicking on it takes you to the next unread item, marking it as read in the process. It is particularly useful for subscriptions which only include snippets or when you want to read an article in context.” Plus it helps give your favorite bloggers pageviews, which is a nice way of saying thank you. This is what it looks like in your browser (mine is Google Chrome).</p>
<p><a href="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/next-button.png"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="next button" src="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/next-button_thumb.png" alt="next button" width="575" height="364" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><strong> 4. My Blog Planner</strong> I have to give a shameless plug for my blog planner. It took me hours upon hours to design a planner that would work well for the creative blogger. This planner allows me to stay on top of guest posts, project ideas and giveaways. Plus I offer it as a <a href="http://www.infarrantlycreative.net/2012/02/free-printable-blogplanner.html" target="_blank">free printable for you right here</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.infarrantlycreative.net/2012/02/free-printable-blogplanner.html" target="_blank"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Printable-blog-planner_thumb" src="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Printable-blog-planner_thumb.jpg" alt="Printable-blog-planner_thumb" width="567" height="430" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><strong> 5. </strong><a href="https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?cl=105672&amp;c=ib&amp;aff=133420"><strong>Mom Blog SEO by Kelby Carr.</strong></a> This e-book is amazing if you want to take your blog to the next level. You work on it for 30 days and Kelby teaches you how to write blog posts to attract more readers and allow Google to crawl your page better. This boosted my traffic about 20% after the first month of implementing her strategies. SEO confuses the junk out of me but this certainly took the guess work out of it. <a href="https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?cl=105672&amp;c=ib&amp;aff=133420" target="_blank"><img style="background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="mom-blog-seo" src="http://infarrantlycreative.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/mom-blog-seo.jpg" alt="" width="575" height="144" border="0" /></a> Thanks for allowing me to share my blogging “must haves”. I hope you will pop on by and pay a visit.</p>

<p>Hi everyone! I&#8217;m Beth from <a href="http://homestoriesatoz.com" target="_blank">Home Stories A to Z</a>, and I am thrilled to be over here today on Justa&#8217;s blog sharing with you some &#8220;musts&#8221; that all bloggers should try to live by. I have learned so much in my four years of blogging and Chris was graciously one of my first blog mentors! Before I called her bloggy BFF, I called her &#8220;Oh Wise Grasshopper&#8221; and bombarded her with my newbie-blogger-questions. Chris emulated the kind of blogger I wanted to be when my blog grew up, and I am so thankful for her mentorship and friendship! I have thought long and hard about what it takes to be a good blogger, and I&#8217;ve narrowed it down to ten blogger commandments that I think are some blogging musts!</p>
<p><strong>1. Thou shalt produce good blog content.</strong></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter" title="content is king" src="http://buzzfactory.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/content-marketing.jpg" alt="content is king" width="530" height="300" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://buzzfactory.net/buzzfactory-blog/content-is-king-but-who-said-being-king-is-easy/" target="_blank">source</a></p>
<p>Content is king and context is queen. Our site has to have good content to keep people coming back for more. Our content needs to be entertaining, relatable, interesting, engaging, informative, well written, with good photos, and a sense of humor certainly doesn&#8217;t hurt <img src='http://justagirlblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> . But we also have to take into consideration the context in which our readers are viewing our site. Are they on a mobile device trying to navigate a mobile unfriendly blog? Are they a new visitor popping in from Pinterest and want to know what we are all about? Are they non-English speaking and unable to easily read our content? Are they searching our blog for our pallet creation but can&#8217;t find it because we titled our post &#8220;I Did the Coolest Thing EV-AH&#8221; instead of &#8220;pallet creation&#8221;? The context in which our readers are landing on our blog will give us a ton of information on how to keep them engaged and returning. Pay attention to your Google Analytics key words, traffic sources, top posts, etc. to learn about your audience and then use that information to become a better blogger.</p>
<p><strong>2. Thou shalt use one&#8217;s blogging and social media platforms for good.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" title="be soft" src="http://media-cache2.pinterest.com/upload/270286415106523883_NZfrN8YF_c.jpg" alt="be soft" width="452" height="700" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://matchbookmag.com/blog/paper-goods/sugar-paper-giveaway/" target="_blank">via Matchbook</a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Whether your readership is in the teens or the trillions, you have an amazing opportunity to reach others. Blogging is a powerful gift and can be used to ignite a spark in someone else. We want to be ready for what sparks we might be igniting! Now, if you know me, then you know that I&#8217;m not one to shy away from speaking my mind (or from conflict in general). However, I always want to use my blogging platform for good and not for harm. If you&#8217;re going to approach any hot-button topics on your blog, then first you might consider seeking out a blog friend to bounce your ideas off of and to give you feedback.</p>
<p><strong>3. Thou shalt have a skin as thick as an elephant&#8217;s hide and shall be comfortable with thou delete key.</strong> <img class="aligncenter" title="delete key" src="http://www.chaaps.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/delete-button.jpg" alt="delete key" width="240" height="244" /> When you blog, you put yourself out there for all to praise and all to criticize. Negative comments sting and are never fun to receive but arguing back seldom does any good. Keep your focus on the positive and just hit that delete key!</p>
<p><strong>4. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor&#8217;s blog.</strong> <img class="aligncenter" title="blog envy " src="http://fashionista-next-door.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/envy-of-the-bone1.jpg" alt="blog envy" width="324" height="324" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://fashionista-next-door.com/2011/01/friend-friday-green-with-blogger-envy.html" target="_blank">via The Fashionista Next Door</a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The comparison game happens to the best of us. It&#8217;s so hard not to be envious of a fellow bloggers&#8217; traffic, numbers, home, projects, opportunities, popularity, etc. but coveting just leaves you feeling icky with nothing gained. Make your blog goals be about you and not someone else. Yes, it is cliche&#8217; but it&#8217;s also so true: focus on being the best YOU and bringing that to your blog each day.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>5. Thou shalt unplug occasionally. </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://ny-image3.etsy.com/il_570xN.258107207.jpg" alt="" width="342" height="443" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.paisleyprintshoes.com/?p=978" target="_blank">via Paisley Print Shoes</a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Blogging can easily become all consuming. If you blog for income, it can be even more difficult to place boundaries on your &#8220;work time&#8221;. When you love what you do it doesn&#8217;t feel like work and let&#8217;s face it, the internet is addictive. Taking at least one day off from blogging a week is so important for your creative mojo not to mention your family life. Do yourself a favor and unplug at least one day a week.</p>
<p><strong>6. Thou shalt not steal others&#8217; content, photos, ideas, or blog name.</strong></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter" src="http://media-cache3.pinterest.com/upload/77264949826582640_JxGxKyP5_f.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://kezzi.tumblr.com/post/9419215105" target="_blank">via kezzi.tumblr</a></p>
<p>Putting it rather simply: Stealing others&#8217; ideas and passing them off as your own just makes you look dumb. You are amazing all on your own and you don&#8217;t need to copy someone else! Be original and if you do copy then of course give credit where credit is due. We all inspire ideas in each other, but our ideas should be different enough from the original that they are clearly our own.</p>
<p><strong>7. Thou shalt honor thy blog family.</strong></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter" title="pay it forward" src="http://media-cache5.pinterest.com/upload/130815564146327696_jqtqrOlK.jpg" alt="pay it forward" width="320" height="305" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/130815564146327696/" target="_blank">via Pinterest</a></p>
<p>Our blog niche is amazing, and I think we&#8217;re one of the nicest niches out there! Home bloggers rock. I love that we honor each other through features, re-tweets, facebook shout outs, etc. It&#8217;s good bloggy karma and it sets our niche apart. Keep it up!</p>
<p><strong>8. Thou shalt be authentic and relatable.</strong> My boys&#8217; bedroom on a typical day</p>
<p><img class=" " style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="boys room" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UlZul8Cn7hM/TTiXY_NlxbI/AAAAAAAAI-g/4hhqHnAINMw/s640/IMG_4220.JPG" alt="boys room" width="621" height="415" /></p>
<p>We do &#8220;pretty&#8221; really well, but we all know that &#8220;real life&#8221; doesn&#8217;t always look like a page from a Pottery Barn catalog. It&#8217;s okay to show the not-so-pretty every once in awhile on your blog. It shows others that you are human too. Don&#8217;t be scared to be real. People love real people!</p>
<p><strong>9. Thou shalt not make an idol out of one&#8217;s blog.</strong></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter" title="blog wordle" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-dvDk3Eyqe7I/TsaMwX9vthI/AAAAAAAAB7Q/5Tj9kF367NA/blog-w%25255B5%25255D.png" alt="blog wordle" width="500" height="326" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.proworship.in/2011/11/i-find-blogs-to-be-tremendous-sources.html" target="_blank">via</a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Blog worship is easy to do. Blogging is awesome, inspiring, and fulfills many needs. <strong><em>You</em></strong> are awesome, inspiring, and fulfill the needs of others! However, a blog is just a blog and shouldn&#8217;t become the center of your universe. If it has, your priorities are out of whack and it&#8217;s time to reevaluate and practice some more of number 5.</p>
<p><strong>10. Thou shalt stay humble. </strong></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter" src="http://media-cache2.pinterest.com/upload/79798224617651366_wGVLHPSN_f.jpg" alt="" width="420" height="294" /> A healthy self esteem is nice and noteworthy&#8230;bragging constantly about how awesome you are is not. I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s just a new style of blog writing, but I&#8217;m noticing a huge trend of &#8220;I am so amazing&#8221; jargon on blogs. I&#8217;m all for tooting your own horn, but remember to do so in a spirit of humility. It&#8217;s fine to say, &#8220;I love how this project turned out!&#8221; It&#8217;s questionable to say, &#8220;Everything I touch turns to gold and I&#8217;m going to be bigger than the biggest so you&#8217;re going to want to follow me! Bow to me if you must!!&#8221; That kind of chest beating is a turn off. Just stay sweet, humble and handle compliments with grace. You are <em>indeed</em> amazing, but don&#8217;t let it go to your head. Thanks for letting me share some blog commandments that I try to live by! Let me know in the comments if you have any to add!</p>

Cassity and her husband have done some amazing (understatement) things to their home, and I’ve been following every detail! She definitely knows how to dive in head first with spectacular projects, so the girl knows what she’s talking about when it comes to “must have” tools. You might want to pay attention to this one!</p>
<p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Must List Remodelaholic" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/cassity_thumb.jpg" alt="Must List Remodelaholic" width="500" height="401" border="0" /></p>
<p>Chris, I am so excited to be here! Thanks for letting me come over and hang out with your readers today! I’m Cassity from <a href="http://www.remodelaholic.com/">Remodelaholic</a>, and you guessed it, I like to remodel (how’d you know). It is true. I am pretty much always scheming for bigger and better ideas for my house. But I would get nowhere without a few favorite hand tools, which is what I am here to share with you.</p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">1. Safety First!</span></strong> No matter what you are doing consider your safety first, you may not look very chic, but heck, I think we all look pretty hot in safety glasses….</p>
<p><a href="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/saftey-first.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="saftey first" src="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/saftey-first_thumb.jpg" alt="saftey first" width="504" height="404" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>2. Getting Started</strong></span> A good measuring tape, levels, chalk line are absolute musts. All these little tools add up to a big hassle if you don’t get it right in the first place! Stanley Fatmax is the best and is really long lasting. Don’t go cheap on the tape measure. I cannot tell you how many we have purchased over the years because of cheap products. This one in particular can stretch about 11 feet without someone on the other end to hold it, a huge help when you are working on projects alone!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/measuring-tape-copy.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="measuring tape copy" src="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/measuring-tape-copy_thumb.jpg" alt="measuring tape copy" width="504" height="404" border="0" /></a><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">3. Some Demo / Building Tools</span></strong> Claw Hammer, Crow Bar and Nail Sets. No remodeler can go without the basic hammer it takes for demolition to decorating. This was our first and still is our most used tool. There are many options out there. Make sure that you get one with texture where it hits the nail to keep from slipping off. Crow bars are useful for cleaning up old wood and nail sets are necessary for any finished work!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/tools-copy.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="tools copy" src="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/tools-copy_thumb.jpg" alt="tools copy" width="504" height="404" border="0" /></a><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">4. Finishing up projects!</span></strong> When working on projects there are a few final tools that you must have, sanding blocks, caulking gun, and a good filler! I love Elmers white filler, because it is water based and if the project is painted white it looks great with only one coat of paint! Dap paintable white caulk is my favorite. I have been using it for 10 years!!!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/finishing-tools-copy.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="finishing tools copy" src="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/finishing-tools-copy_thumb.jpg" alt="finishing tools copy" width="504" height="404" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>5. Painting</strong></span> Foam roller, angled brush, spray paint trigger and clean up tool! There are many things that we paint from walls to picture frames, make sure you have the right tool! For spray paint my must have is a trigger handle worth every single penny of it’s 4 dollar price tag! Don’t ever get a cramped index finger again! For rollers, if I need to keep the finish smooth nothing beats a white foam roller, this is great for furniture. Lastly a high quality angle paint brush, don’t go cheap… can I admit that I NEVER use painters tape. I just cut everything in by hand with a good paint brush!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/painting-copy.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="painting copy" src="http://www.remodelaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/painting-copy_thumb.jpg" alt="painting copy" width="504" height="404" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">I hope this list is helpful! The best part by far for any DIY project is the feeling of accomplishment after! So jump in give it a try! Thanks again Chris for having me. And I hope you all will come and check out my blog <a href="http://www.remodelaholic.com/">Remodelaholic</a>! Have a great weekend!</span></span></p>

I do well with two things—humor and full disclosure. Luckily, Layla fits the bill for both! I learned more about her in 5 minutes than what it takes some women years to learn about their friends. That’s my kind of girl! As for her blog? It speaks for itself. Seriously. Here she is!</p>
<p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="lettered cottage" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/letteredcottage_thumb.jpg" alt="lettered cottage" width="532" height="421" border="0" /></p>
<p>Hello! I&#8217;m Layla and I blog at <a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/">The Lettered Cottage</a>. First off, I want to send out a big thanks to Chris for allowing me the opportunity to talk about one of my most favorite subjects today: PHOTO STYLING!</p>
<p>Over the past few years, <a href="http://shootflyshoot.com/">my husband</a> and I have started photographing interiors professionally for a few different shelter magazines, and I have had so much fun arranging and re-arranging things during our shoots. It&#8217;s such a trip to see how differently things appear when you look at them through the lens of a camera!</p>
<p>I&#8217;m still learning as I go, but it seems like my 3 must haves when it comes to styling an interior photo shoot are: Texture, life and art. Texture for interest, life for movement, and art for heart.</p>
<p><strong>Texture:</strong></p>
<p>Whether it&#8217;s a soft, ragged-edged throw blanket draped over the arm of a hard, clean-lined chair, or &#8220;crunchy&#8221; flowers mixed with glass and painted wood- layering textures always seems to add so much spirit to a photo.</p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/flea-market-style-summer-2012/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Texture_1" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Texture_1.jpg" alt="Texture_1" width="411" height="577" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/flea-market-style-summer-2012/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Texture_2" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Texture_2.jpg" alt="Texture_2" width="414" height="620" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>I like to think in terms of rough and smooth, or old and new when approaching textures in an interior shoot. That kind of contrast is always so refreshing, surprising, and seems to photograph so beautifully.</p>
<p><strong>Life:</strong></p>
<p>I like to add life to photos in a few different ways. Sometimes it&#8217;s with people and pets&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/kitchen/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Life_1" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Life_1.jpg" alt="Life_1" width="616" height="410" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Sometimes it&#8217;s with plants and flowers&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/flea-market-style-summer-2012/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Life_2" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Life_2.jpg" alt="Life_2" width="395" height="591" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>&#8230;and sometimes it&#8217;s simply making inanimate objects a little more animated&#8230;.</p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/guest-my-nest-dutton-waller-cottage-tybee-island-georgia/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Life_3" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Life_3.jpg" alt="Life_3" width="391" height="586" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>I pulled that delicious old door forward a bit in the photo above to give the picture a little more energy. I love the movement and pulse life gives a picture.</p>
<p><strong>Art:</strong></p>
<p>There&#8217;s something about art that just instantly relaxes a look.</p>
<p>Whether it&#8217;s propped&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/mantel-mania-our-spring-mantel/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Art_1" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Art_1.jpg" alt="Art_1" width="587" height="420" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>or perched&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/flea-market-style-summer-2012/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Art_2" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Art_2.jpg" alt="Art_2" width="402" height="591" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>&#8230;or planted&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/our-summer-mantel"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Art_3" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Art_3.jpg" alt="Art_3" width="405" height="525" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>&#8230;or hanging,</p>
<p><a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/breeze-inn/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="Art_4" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Art_4.jpg" alt="Art_4" width="403" height="604" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>incorporating art and/or photography really comforts and grounds the room those elements live in, don&#8217;t you think?</p>
<p>I know Chris only asked for 3 must have&#8217;s but I did want to mention one more that I absolutely <em>have to have</em> at every shoot. <strong>FUN!</strong></p>
<p>Without that one, what&#8217;s the point, right?</p>

Shelley from <a href="http://www.thehouseofsmiths.com/">House of Smiths</a> has such a beautiful blog, and her photography is spot on. Every post she writes is like a breath of cheery, fresh air, so I HAD to ask her to write about some photography tips. Let me tell ya—they. are. good. Sit back and take notes!</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/smiths.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="House of Smiths" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/smiths_thumb.jpg" alt="House of Smiths" width="529" height="423" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Hey JAG fans! I&#8217;m excited to be sharing 3 of my must-know photography tips with you today! I swear in the past 6 months Pinterest and other similar sites have really given bloggers a run for their money. Don&#8217;t get me wrong, there are STILL those blogs <em>(like this one, of course)</em> that you visit every day and soak in each word&#8230; but for the most part, the majority of our traffic lately comes from readers that just want to brows the &#8216;pretty pictures&#8217;, until they see something that interests them. So, I&#8217;m here to share three simple things with you that will hopefully help take YOUR photos, to the next level&#8230;whether you&#8217;re a blogger or not <img src='http://justagirlblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New', courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Natural Lighting and a Reflector:</span></span></p>
<p>I know we hear it all the time, but natural light is the BEST, least inexpensive tool that you can use when trying to accomplish a beautiful photo.</p>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z1z8KpuWtFc/T4NMtjuLNRI/AAAAAAAAgRs/81OoQV2_qfM/s1600/shooting+with+natural+light.jpg"><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z1z8KpuWtFc/T4NMtjuLNRI/AAAAAAAAgRs/81OoQV2_qfM/s1600/shooting+with+natural+light.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">Keep in mind, when you&#8217;re working with natural light, shoot WITH the light and not against it. If you shoot directly into natural light, your subject/project/room will appear dark. If you can turn yourself around, so that your shot is lined up with indirect natural light ON your subject, then you&#8217;ll achieve a much better photo in the end.</div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EqDsFFwFvh8/T4NNSYkvXqI/AAAAAAAAgR0/qxxHS9-CVqg/s1600/photographing+with+light.jpg"><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EqDsFFwFvh8/T4NNSYkvXqI/AAAAAAAAgR0/qxxHS9-CVqg/s1600/photographing+with+light.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oii6nfzy_0o/T4NN8Z5IhLI/AAAAAAAAgR8/m9bwFwsAVCY/s1600/photography+with+natural+light.jpg"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oii6nfzy_0o/T4NN8Z5IhLI/AAAAAAAAgR8/m9bwFwsAVCY/s1600/photography+with+natural+light.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;">Sometimes natural light isn&#8217;t always exactly where you need it, and if that&#8217;s the case, you can purchase a reflector for about $15 &#8211; $30.</div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NQFwwuWo1BA/T4NQjzFGknI/AAAAAAAAgSM/MIAxqn1OFtU/s1600/reflector1.jpg"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NQFwwuWo1BA/T4NQjzFGknI/AAAAAAAAgSM/MIAxqn1OFtU/s1600/reflector1.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;">A reflector will help to shine that extra bit of light onto your subject. As you can see below, even in the second picture <em>(using just the reflector and my camera in automatic mode)</em> the photo looks a lot brighter!</div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6ilbQX8gWTE/T4NQDT-mETI/AAAAAAAAgSE/jxFk3H_cqZQ/s1600/Learning+to+Use+my+Camera+-+The+house+of+Smiths.jpg"><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6ilbQX8gWTE/T4NQDT-mETI/AAAAAAAAgSE/jxFk3H_cqZQ/s1600/Learning+to+Use+my+Camera+-+The+house+of+Smiths.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;">When you&#8217;re attempting to photograph anything from a child, to a small project or an entire room, remember: OPEN THE WINDOWS, let the light shine in, and take advantage of those picture perfect rays!<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Tabletop and Standing Tripods:</span></span></p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5mMo6Tu_3aI/T4NR53bfAGI/AAAAAAAAgSU/sFdOaoHu2eU/s1600/Table+top+tripod.jpg"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5mMo6Tu_3aI/T4NR53bfAGI/AAAAAAAAgSU/sFdOaoHu2eU/s1600/Table+top+tripod.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<p>These two, fairly inexpensive pieces of equipment are absolutely necessary for me, when shooting product, video or the final, polished photo of a large project.</p>
<p>A standing tripod allows you to capture a clear, balanced, centered photo. I usually only pull mine out at the end of a tutorial/project, for the final photo, or when my lighting is tricky and I need a really stable surface for my camera.</p>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jsHv2Xc6jm4/T4NTH1XBOeI/AAAAAAAAgSc/_Z9H9-04O9A/s1600/the+house+of+smiths+blog.jpg"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jsHv2Xc6jm4/T4NTH1XBOeI/AAAAAAAAgSc/_Z9H9-04O9A/s1600/the+house+of+smiths+blog.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;">A tabletop tripod is great when trying to accomplish a more abstract, or closeup photo of something. It&#8217;s a lot more convenient than a large standing tripod, and can easily move around wherever you need it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yeX1nqGYQmk/T4NUHAclNEI/AAAAAAAAgSk/55H8K_9Mxlw/s1600/table+top+tripod+example+photos.jpg"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yeX1nqGYQmk/T4NUHAclNEI/AAAAAAAAgSk/55H8K_9Mxlw/s1600/table+top+tripod+example+photos.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;"><span style="font-family: 'Courier New', courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">50mm Camera Lens:</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--jU9OYEBhU4/T4NXdSjRnoI/AAAAAAAAgSs/ad3NYd-xZZ0/s1600/Best-DSLR-Lens-50mm-Lens.jpg"><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--jU9OYEBhU4/T4NXdSjRnoI/AAAAAAAAgSs/ad3NYd-xZZ0/s320/Best-DSLR-Lens-50mm-Lens.jpg" alt="" width="315" height="320" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;">For only about $100 you can purchase a 50mm lens for your SLR camera. This lens has no zoom capability, but is perfect for all types of daily photographing situations. <em>(You can read more about different lenses and SLR camera body styles in <a href="http://www.thehouseofsmiths.com/2011/12/what-to-look-for-when-buying-new-dslr.html" target="_blank">my blog post here</a>)</em> It works especially well for portraiture photography and shots that need to capture a lot of detail, as well as shooting indoors, where natural light tends to be low.</div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-soaujpwHh94/T4NYWK8ad3I/AAAAAAAAgS0/9aClGN-C_Ek/s1600/50mm+lens+-+thehouseofsmiths.jpg"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-soaujpwHh94/T4NYWK8ad3I/AAAAAAAAgS0/9aClGN-C_Ek/s1600/50mm+lens+-+thehouseofsmiths.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;">This is also a really great lens to use when you first start learning about how to shoot in a manual mode, verses your cameras automatic settings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;"></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;">I honestly feel that blog posts are SO much more enjoyable to read when they have beautiful, well photographed pictures to go along with them. Even if you can&#8217;t afford an SLR camera right away, you can still implement some of these other tips and tricks in your photography to accomplish great photos for your posts EVERY time!</div>

One of my favorite people evah is here! If I told you all&#160; the “behind the scenes” stuff about Sarah and me, I have a feeling you’d question how we even make it in blogland. We are equally immature and have a tendency to be complete morons. Of course, telling you that probably isn’t a good segue for her “must have” tool installment. However, this girl knows what she’s doing. She is <em>literally</em> the reason I bought my first power tool. Hang on her every word!</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/thrifty.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="thrifty" border="0" alt="thrifty" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/thrifty_thumb.jpg" width="535" height="426" /></a></p>
<p>Hello there! I’m tickled to be over at Chris’ place today – I love her dearly and love this blog series! I’m learning all kinds of great info from these lovely ladies.</p>
<p>Chris asked me to talk power tools today and I was happy to oblige. I’m a tool girl, have been for a long time now. I’d rather spend a few hours roaming the aisles of the hardware store over a clothing store any day of the week. It truly is my toy store. <img src='http://justagirlblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>I’m sharing my top three power tools, in the order of ease of use. Now, none of these are hard to use, you just need some practice, patience and good safety gear. It’s all about getting comfortable with a tool. And believe me, there are still some I am not comfortable with at all!</p>
<p>The first is the most basic – the screwdriver: </p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/1.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="1" border="0" alt="1" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/1_thumb.jpg" width="364" height="545" /></a></p>
<p>It’s so basic some may not even consider it a power tool, but I could not live without mine. I use it at least once a week for smaller projects here and there. </p>
<p>It’s a breeze to use, and I prefer the cordless version for most jobs around the house. (I have a corded version for big projects.) </p>
<p>I use it most often for hanging art (I use an anchor and a screw for 90 percent of my art because I have an irrational fear if I don’t it will come crashing down in the middle of the night and scare me to death.) But anyway. Art and also hanging drapery hardware – those are two biggies around here:</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/2.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="2" border="0" alt="2" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/2_thumb.jpg" width="483" height="445" /></a></p>
<p>The next one on my must have list is the nail gun:</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/3.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="3" border="0" alt="3" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/3_thumb.jpg" width="409" height="519" /></a></p>
<p>I think this is one people shy away from – for cost reasons and because of the fear of handling one. But the cost isn’t too prohibitive for a basic version – I’ve seen the gun and a small compressor come in at just over $100. </p>
<p>The safety aspects of the nail gun make it hard to hurt yourself. Of course it can happen, so use care and get familiar with it first, but it’s incredibly easy to operate. Mine is an older version with a small compressor and it does the job very well – I’ve had this one for at least six years and it’s still kickin’. <img src='http://justagirlblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>And if you get one, the possibilities are endless! My Dad and I installed built ins in my son’s room and I made over our kitchen island with mine:</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/4.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="4" border="0" alt="4" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/4_thumb.jpg" width="453" height="418" /></a></p>
<p>Finally, the BIG ONE. She’s a beast and I love her. The compound miter saw:</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/5.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="5" border="0" alt="5" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/5_thumb.jpg" width="328" height="491" /></a></p>
<p>I bought mine only a few years ago and cannot imagine my DIY life without it. It seems like I use it for nearly every project now. I used to have every piece of wood cut at the hardware store, and still do sometimes, but this makes life SO much easier. </p>
<p>I was a teensy bit afraid of it at first, but like all tools, the more you use it, the more comfortable you get. There are safety features on this one as well, but it’s always best to take your time when using a saw. (And be fully aware where your hands are at all times.)</p>
<p>With a compound miter saw, the sky is the limit! With mine, I’ve installed board and batten throughout the house and was able to create a fun book nook for our kiddo:</p>
<p><a href="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/6.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px" title="6" border="0" alt="6" src="http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/6_thumb.jpg" width="398" height="367" /></a></p>
<p>Well there you go! I hope my power tool must haves make you feel a bit more comfortable and a little less hesitant about trying out one for yourself. <img src='http://justagirlblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> Like I said, there are a few I still haven’t tried (the table and circular saw to name a couple), but someday I will – like when Lowe’s doesn&#8217;t cut all my wood down for me anymore. <img src='http://justagirlblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Thanks for having me Chris! Love ya!!</p>
