'TIS THE FIRST WEEK IN A GOLDEN SEASON

Well since we’re in the autumn season the might as well try the dictation program again and see if it will work in the season as well as in the summer I hope I’m getting better I’m not sure the program is. So far I think it’s performing exceptionally well I’m the one who’s having the problem. Paragraph I tried using it to make some email plans and things like that and I did more work very well probably because I don’t have the right protocol to make the commands correct.

This has been a very tough weekend with my pet peeves as far as getting programs together and of course we still have our son cam in hospital and their various issues that have to be resolved there and that’s taking not so much of my time but it really is putting Linda his wife in the cold showers only speak and giving her very very busy. All that to say I really don’t have time to write a very sensible blog today.

I’m visiting my own family doctor today for some tests because am having some difficulty with things I don’t think I’ll be having difficulties with but that happens. So if you’ll pardon me I will go to bed and start of the making all these mistakes with the programs, and the problems compounded by my errors. So I let this go for today hope you enjoy the make a Old Farmer’s Almanac information we send along to you today to make a bit of a break in all this political brouhaha – boy that’s neat the program put in brouhaha on its own motion I guess it fits as well as anything. ARE WE RECRUITING THESE "USEFUL IDIOTS"? -- Just a Minute Radio for Friday 120921

As I put out in the promoline – some days go better than others – but this one went well (knock knock) after a couple of hours of searching and fingernail biting (L)!

As we draw on toward the end of the election process… it’s been a LOOOONG time from where I sit. I’m not sure I can go through another of these --- OTOH it’s one of those things we really don’t want to miss === *especially* if we can win and I’m trusting the Lord we can—we must!.

This particular program has been both hard and easy. It took a while to get started but then I sailed right through it when I finally got the idea and the right material. I also must say I’m happy to have my dictation tool along with me and it’s working right for the parts I know how toI work. Now if I can just get my brain to catch up with my mouth or vice versa things will go swimmingly.

I knew what I wanted to write about for this weekend program but I did not know just where to find the ideas that I had in mind. Finally after two hours of searching and taking notes I came to the one group I thought would work. And with a little editing and so forth it did. I still don’t quite know how to work the commands on this thing but it’s coming.

You probably get tired of me fooling around with this learning but it does have the promise of saving me a lot of time. Let me know what you think if you want to drop me a line the email address is right at the bottom of the script signature.

ARE WE RECRUITING THESE “USEFUL IDIOTS”?

Just a Minute: In 1916, an outspoken advocate for liberty, William Boetcker, wrote: “You can’t bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift or strengthen the weak by weakening the strong; or help the poor man by destroying the rich, neither do you encourage brotherhood by instigating class hatred .”These elements are too often employed, surreptitiously in political campaigns.

In its wake comes confusion, uncertainties mistaken motives and what can grow into class warfare. Joseph Stalin was adept at using these tools – and unfortunately, it’s often used today in political campaigning. Fact is government cannot give to anyone what has not been taken from someone else. Thomas Jefferson noted, a government big enough to give you anything, is also big enough to take it away.

Put another way George Bernard Shaw said:, "A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul."

All of this comes to the fore as a purloined, behind-the-curtain film, of Mr. Romney’s fundraiser talk to a private group is been circulated by Jimmy Carter IV, grandson of the former President.

THE KINDS OF THINGS MIT COULD SAY -- Just a Minute Radio for Thursday 120920

Today has been a very heavy day and so I’m going to have to make this short.

For reasons unknown to me, I could hardly get any of the things I had planned to undertake done today because there were so many interruptions. So I’m just taking a bit of time at the end of the day to try and let you know what my thoughts are on the matter of Mr. Romney being photographed and surreptitiously recorded through the curtains at a fundraiser. In my view it’s a scurrilous thing to do and not that of a worthy opponent. [I’m NOT saying Mr. Obama had anything to do with it.]

There are a lot of things that are being changed in my specific situation and I’m having to adjust to them with more adjustments to come later – none of this involves elections or matters in that regard I’m just having to dodge around the immovable objects and the things that have to be taken care of.

I’ve done speechwriting for several different senators at various times in my career so it’s not exactly a foreign world to me but it’s not one I particularly have enjoyed but appreciated the need for skill in writing for the clients needs. I think Mr. Romney is an excellent speaker and certainly a talented businessman and probably is probably an excellent strategist. I just don’t consider myself someone to give him advice. However every now and then some things become fairly obvious and I just want to throw in my two cents worth for clarity.

Just take it for what you feel is worth, utilize it or ignore it, as the case may be and we’ll both sleep better tonight. Time dictates the available space so don’t think I’m just being cute.

THE KINDS OF THINGS MITT COULD SAY

Just a Minute: Mr. Romney’s had too many “coudda-woudda critics” -- ’would be’ speech-writers who’ve never been unchained from the on-deck circle. Here are some thoughts that could be useful. For instance: You could say:

"One tragedy of the Obama Presidency is how many more Americans have become dependent on the government. I know it's not their fault. Most want to be self-sufficient, and provide for their families, but there aren't enough jobs…. Yet..!

"That's why 40% have been unemployed – out of work six months or more. It’s the smallest share of the population looking for work any time since 1981.” You could add: "This is a national scandal. Not because those fellow Americans are free-loaders, but they can’t latch on to a good enough job to be self-sufficient fulfilling their human potential.”

People long to hear you say: "I want Americans to be less dependent on government … but Americans need to be independent enough to realize the pride of accomplishment -- the dignity of work – to contribute their God-given talents toward building a stronger, better country. The success of a Presidency should be measured by how many fewer people need food stamps, … not how many MORE need food stamps.”

HOW COME THE EQUINOX ISN'T EQUAL? - Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 120919

Tough sledding here as we’re about to wind Summer down. This has been a tough summer and early autumn for us with our #2 Son Kim in hospital since July 4^th and difficulties still to be surmounted. But Praise the Lord we believe they can be – at the very least in “trusting HIM – the Lord” who is merciful and understanding and works all things out for Kim’s good and the Lord’s glory – praise the Lord for all that.

The Election as it is progressing is not easy to take in all its aspects too. Somehow I feel personally hurt by the needless deaths and betrayals by those who are supposed to be our allies – and for whom we have seen much blood spilled and families bereaved. We it not for the Holy Spirit’s comforting scriptures left for our comfort and HIS presence we would be troubled indeed.

I see the wounded soldiers and airmen and all…and my heart goes out to the families. I pray for them and their loved ones. We have no ways except by God’s grace to know what difficulties and triumphs they are exposed to. We can only pray God’s blessed assurance upon them and their families too. How this works out we do not know until Heaven.

We are praying too for those who bear the heavy burdens of leadership and sending young men and women into ‘harms way’ – what a dim picture of the terror, pain and immediate as well as long term crosses to bear are here and now. As well as remembering the families and soldiers, sailors and Marines who have fought and shed blood for the freedoms we enjoy. May the Lord God be with and comfort them all.

I’m afraid I cannot bear up under these thoughts any further today – so may the Lord’s blessing rest upon each family and each person suffering this time is my fervent prayer.

CAN THIS BECOME A BENEFICIAL CONFLAGRATION -- Just a Minute Radio for Tuesday 120918

Yesterday I guess I had been watching far too many bonfires and demonstrations in North Africa. I suppose it was mild depression from hearing so much on the TV and radio about the bad news from Libya and particularly from Benghazi.

The pictures from Cairo from Libya and the news of the four Americans who had been killed and Benghazi was just overwhelming. But I read an article in the Wall Street Journal’s opinion page with the headline “Amid chants of Free Libya, Terrorists Out, A nation at a crossroads”. – And the news that Ambassador Stevens and three of his comrades had been killed --- it was just overwhelming.

Couple that with more pictures from Lebanon, more bad news there and also Syria – not to mention several other lesser stories and more pictures but still pictures of American flags being desecrated – it made for a terrible way to start the week.

However: – "There hath no temptation [testing] taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (1Cor 10:13, KJV)

I don’t use that verse to make excuses but I’ll tell you – It’s like a life-raft in a storm. It has rescued me innumerable times when I just could not *see* my way out. He (the Lord) provides the way out.

That’s the way it’s going to be for those who are trusting the Lord in these puzzling and challenging situations. May I as a 80-year-old Christian who’s been in the Lord’s care since I was about 15, assure you that He never fails to come up with the solution to any problem. But it may take time. We don’t see the ‘end from the beginning as the Lord does!

So that’s why I feel like we will come out of these problems with the Lord’s help if we pray and trust Him! God bless you and keep on trusting.

CAN THIS BECOME A BENFICIAL CONFLAGRATION?

Just a Minute: Yesterday I was filled with despair for Libya and Egypt and other countries in turmoil. Today, I see a spark of hope with the potential to light a candle of peace in place of the present bonfires of wickedness which light the Mediterranean sky.

Years ago I broadcast a daily program in Northern Virginia called Faith and Hope Time originated by the pastor of our family’s church. Today the piece I read in the Wall St. Journal reminded me of the powerful resources available by prayer for Christians.

Two academic writers on Monday’s “OPINION” page wrote about “Pro-USA” demonstrations and say the “hateful video” is a minor item in Libya -- and Americans are more loved there even than Canadians. James Pack and Andrea Khalil drew their interviews from dozens of observations in Libya and I’d suggest you read their report in the Journal. Mr. Pack is President of Libya analysis[dot].com and Mrs. Khalil on a Fulbright Scholarship to Tunisia. We need far more balanced and alert reporting than we’re getting. These reporters tell us only “intense engagement can help restore momentum to the political transition that’s already underway.” <> I’m Jack Buttram

CRYING 'FIRE' IN A CROWDED THEATRE -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 120914

Well, we’re working our way is through to the end of the week. Seems like this week has been longer than most.

Four-star general, and former Director of the CIA Michael Hayden had an exclusive interview with Newsmax TV on Wednesday. They discussed events in Libya and Gen. Hayden said: “I’m reminded of Secretary of State Powell’s comments about Iraq … : it’s the Pottery Barn theory – “if you break it you own it !”

The idea is if you rush into an area willy-nilly you’re liable to and up with more hornets and bees buzzing around than you thought possible. That’s what’s happening in the Middle East these days. Gen. Hayden was trying to remind Pres. Obama that it was not wise to rush in to the Middle East and say so many things that you were not sure how it would come out. This week we found out the beginning of how they would come out.

The Middle East with Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and all those places is really a fragile tender box. With all the crosscurrents and animosities it’s like picking your way through a room full of porcupines.

Egypt and Libya are two of the offenders right now and Libya has been the hotbed that killed the American ambassador in Libya Chris Stevens in a safe house refuge in Benghazi. From all the crowds and smoke and fireworks I saw near our embassy in Cairo last night on TV last night it looks like we’re in a war already. We certainly have nations at odds with each other as well as at odds with us and there’s no quick way out.

The State Department under Pres. Obama is so confused and uncertain about what to say it’s hard to know what the situation is in Egypt and Libya. We already have four American casualties. It appears that possibly the strike against Egypt and Libya was a way to get back at the USA for being so hard on the attackers of September 9-11. However, having over 3000 people killed on that day is no small problem. It demands America stand up and make sure no one does that to us again. Now we’ve added four more people to account for. This is how American affairs become so entangled in a very short time and we’re seeing it happen before our eyes.

How do we get out of a mess like this? Christians know the best road out is trusting the Lord, not in our own wisdom. This world is not our home as Christians to use the old hymn words “we’re just a-passing through.” Let us keep that in mind as we travel the road on these difficult days when danger looms all about-- we must know our trust needs to be only in the Lord.

Hayden, was appointed CIA director by President George W. Bush in 2006 and served until 2009. He made no secret the information was available should have been obvious to President Obama in his speeches and attitudes expressed internationally.

BEN STEIN PROPOSES A SPEECH FOR MITT ROMNEY - Just a Minute Radio for Thursday 120913

Something’s gone crazy in my computer sent box. Things are all ‘jiggered’ around and I can’t figure what’s going on – but I’ll do my best.

Perhaps it’s the things going on in the Middle East. Have you ever seen things get so turned inside-out so quickly. I think it does have something to do (eventually we’ll find out more or less) with Al//Quida (however ‘tis spelled) snafuing all the main lines. We’ll see when the covers get snatched off one of these days.

Meantime we’ll blunder along – so if you’re wondering what’s happening – that’s it. And it’ll probably continue happening. For me… I’m just subscribing to Obama’s slogan of ‘Hope and Change’ – I’m hoping we’ll get CHANGED from him being President… -- that’s real and it’s urgent – IMO.

Today’s program has a portion of a speech or letter or something like that made up by Ben Stein – who once was a staffer at the Reagan White House – is a retired humorist…even tho he is still humorous – and apparently does well in economics (which I suppose is the science of having enough money to get around to where you want to be. At least that’s what I derive from reading his columns – which for the most part are his thoughts on what he’d like to see happening – and in a modified way that’s what I’d like to see happening too.

Today -and this week actually-- I’ve been fooling around with this dictation program to see if I’m gonna get any better at it. I don’t see much progress but then that’s the way I usually am. But it may be just me.

I’ve had a couple of the small operations done on my forehead and face getting rid of various kinds of skin cancers and the result is the got a be okay I think but in the meantime there’s a bit of misery involved so while I’m feeling miserable I think I’ll just a call it a day here on just a minute and will see what we can say about things tomorrow.

Progress is pretty slow and so rather than bore you with a lot of fiddling around with the computer I think I’ll just say good night and like Edward R Murrow used to say good luck.

Just a Minute: Here’s most of a speech Ben Stein proposed Mitt Romney make when choosing to have Secretary of State Clinton meet this international outrage apologizing to the mobs:

"Let me be clear about this: Mr. Obama is wrong. We have complete freedom of speech in this country. We do not apologize to mobs of thugs and bullies for our residents having free speech. As I take office in the next year the era of apologizing to foreign thugs and bandits for the United States of America and our freedoms is over. "We expect governments of Egypt and Libya and others to do their duty and protect our embassies. If they can't, we will. We will not apologize for our Constitution.”

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, plead for a face to face meeting in New York or Washington [but] Mr. Obama brushed Premier Netanyahu, aside saying his schedule did not permit it [but It turned out] Mr. Obama did have time to have a comedy interview with David Letterman.

Mr. Romney, you didn’t make that speech but it's not too late.

TRYING TO GET SMARTER ON LINE - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 120912

Now -- we’re trying something a little different today.

I’ve been getting some feedback that we’re not making our points very well in this blog. So in the program where trying to incubate a Little More Interest from the characters that appear here on Wednesdays.

Let me know what you think about the discussion at Earl and Lester’s Bakeshop and Sushi Bar on this Wednesday. Certainly we want to keep things interesting here on Wednesdays especially because that’s when all our folks from Playfair come and visit.

Perhaps you’re not familiar with all the characters but there is Ms. Pearl and Homer and Billy Bob. They’re pretty recognizable as characters from Playfair and friends of mine. I grew up in Virginia but my mother is from South Carolina and I was born in Virginia of South Carolina Virginia mother and an Alabama father and I married a Pennsylvania girl -- so I’m pretty well ensconced in American history at least by my parents.

If this paragraph seems a little stilted and awkward it’s because I’m trying to learn a new computer program which lets me translate speech into printed word. Problem is my brain doesn’t work that fast. Perhaps in a day or two or week or two more months or two it’ll catch up with what it’s supposed to look like but at least the dictation is faster than my typing usually is and that’s the difficulty I’m trying to overcome.

Anytime you feel like you’d like to contribute something by way of the suggestion or some changes like to hear made on just a minute please write to me and care of WMUU and will see what can be done for you. Meantime I’ll try to get used to dictating rather than typing and we’ll see if things can go better. We appreciate always your tuning in and we appreciate any suggestions that you may have.

We’re switching focus overseas just to let you know some things are still going on elsewhere – important things.

I really don’t know just how or why this story caught my eye. It was supposed to show up in the Wall St. Journal for Monday – but try as I might I couldn’t find it in the ‘unabridged’ version – but checking other news sources I did find the story coming out of Islamabad. What’s the significance of this showing up in another place? I’m not sure.

Obviously there are Christians who exist there – but it is the largest city in Pakistan and carries the title of ‘gamma’ or world city. To have this story of a young girl, who is suspected of burning pages out of a “Holy Book” and then being ‘protected’ or excused from this in a place where there would normally be persecution possibly even death – it’s more than a bit puzzling.

Then to have the story carried around the world via wire services and news organizations… well I don’t know what to make of it. ‘

Our news machine at the moment is busy with Congress coming back into session, and most of the news services are crowded with political information – just a little with the anniversary of the September 11^th Anniversary… -- and loads of stories crowding the wires with domestic stories… Well, I just don’t know what to make of it.

Perhaps we’ll find out before too long. I’m not one to make things up or shove them out there with no explanation. I just can’t explain – aside from the ‘human interest’ angle – why this unusual Pakistani story should make world wide papers and interesting headlines. Let’s pray for the young Christian girl and her family. Undoubtedly they are in need of some kind. God answers prayer.

Meanwhile we’ll be back tomorrow with our usual group from Playfair – perhaps they have unusual news notes also.

CHRISTIAN GIRL PERSECUTED IN ISLAMABAD

Just a Minute: A Pakistani court granted bail last Friday to a young, mentally deprived Christian girl who was accused of insulting Islam by burning pages of Islam’s holy book. The court granted leniency last week to a 14 year old – who was alleged to have mental capacity of only 7 years and accused of blasphemy.

This is seldom charged in a Muslim-majority country where allegations like this are often manufactured in order to persecute minorities or just to settle personal disagreements. Activists warmed to the decision because the case highlights propensities of the harsh Pakistan blasphemy laws used to persecute enemies or minorities or to get back at other individuals.

Judge Mohammed Azam Khan set bail at about $10,500, a very impossible sum, in a nation where many families must live on only a few dollars a day. A coalition of prominent Muslim clerics as well as the Interior Minister, virtually pronounced the girl innocent because of her mental situation.

Great to have you along for the clean up. Folding all the chairs – cleaning up the trash – paying all the bills that have come at taxpayer expense. [How did we ever get in that fix?] They say it’s all due to the security measures we have to take to protect and take care of all the governmental people. Well, I suppose that’s good for something!.

Frankly, I’m not used to staying up late and turning out the “good stuff” after midnight. So I think I’ll be turning in early on this shift. We have a lot of things to take care of.

In case you hadn’t noticed – school terms have started for the fall season. Which means I have to take up my traffic safety duties again… which I’m glad to do. Since we have a traffic accident victim in the family…since a July 4^th accident – it seems the time is slowly dragging by. I feel so sorry for my #2 son Kim who was hit by a car on the evening of the 4^th of JULY. (I suspect most who are reading this know that already) And it looks as if we have a LONG way to go for him to get well.

I get somewhat emotional when I think my son is trapped in that body unable to talk or communicate –at least we’ve not been able to discern it… and we’re into the third month of this tube feeding and all the other ‘connections’ that have to go along with that. We are thankful for the folks who have helped care for KIM and we’re just praying for a recovery ASAP if that is in the Lord’s will. It will be miraculous when he comes out – and that is what keeps him going I suppose and I know the Lord has blessed his wife and other loved ones – for whom we are so thankful.

So our only efficient activity at this distance is praying and how we are thankful for those who have sacrificed their time and effort to bless the family with their help and presence – how wonderfully the Lord provides. We know if Kim comes through normally it will be only by the Lord’s direction and protection. There’s much to be learned in situations like this and how thankful we are for the Lord’s blessings and care.

Our thanks and love to all of you who have and are praying for Kim’s recovery and have contributed in time and effort and indeed in financial help. We cannot thank you enough for your concerns and generosity. May the Lord bless you richly.

Just a Minute: OK … The old saying in show business is: “Always leave ‘em wanting more.” Since I mentioned David Letterman in yesterday’s program … this phone call came from someone named “Leno” accusing me of being unfair – so looking at the speech last evening I gathered these beauties from ‘Jay’: --

“It is day two of the Democratic convention, and apparently they had a huge lighting problem in the convention hall today. They worked all day on it. They still couldn't get President Obama out of Bill Clinton's shadow.

“President Obama's re-election campaign said that this year they'll knock on 150 percent more doors than they did in 2008. Well, of course they will. They have to. There's so many foreclosures it's tough to tell where people live.

“They announced today that they moved President Obama's speech last night indoors, from the 74,000-seat stadium to a smaller venue due to the possibility of severe weather. See, apparently the campaign is concerned about this well-known weather phenomenon known as empty seats. “

Sometimes it’s hard to keep the chin up. Last evening I saw one of the ladies who was a combat helicopter pilot severely wounded on the stage in Charlotte – and her speech both politically and patriotically was exemplary and a good example. It’s the kind of ‘coming together’ that IS important in America and I’m pleased to see it. What I don’t like is jabs and unthankful things said, not by this person but occasionally said by Democrats and Republicans. After all folks we *are* all Americans and there are people among us on both sides who are bad as well as good. Nobody’s got a lock on morals or certainty. So we’re better off to get it tattooed inside our eyelids – neither side is perfect! Both sides can use improvement, honesty and understanding. So let’s pull in our “Better than Thou” horns and be thankful we’re in America.

There – I started and delivered my unintended sermon in the first paragraph. Now it’s over.

Now a personal word: I – we – greatly appreciate those who have prayed for us and particularly for our son KIM. He’s had some improvements and some setbacks. We really have no strong evidence of weather or not he’s going to come through this injury normally. He’s been through quite a lot – now and previously when he was attacked by skin-cancer – melanoma. He’s been through a lot of surgery –including brain surgery – and the Lord has blessed his recovery from that. We’re just taking this one day at a time with prayer and trusting the Lord for HIS will. Thank you so much for your prayers and concerns. We are truly thankful and wish for you to know that. God bless you – every one. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ (who) strengthens me!”

CAN THE DEMS SURVIVE THEIR OWN CONVENTION? -- Just A Minute Radio for Thursday 120906

I only got to see the last part of Ex-President Clinton’s speech last night – so I didn’t get the full blast.

The first part – according to a report I got, was good – acknowledging the former President that went before and doing a good job of praising the “other side.” I got about the last 2/3 of the speech which was still over 52 minutes total I’m told. Even at that I’m surprised at how much he put in there – and if I didn’t know better I’d be tempted to say it was a good speech.

But it wasn’t. I’m reminded of the midway game of chance barker who invites the unsuspecting midway walkers to guess under which shell the peanut is hiding. After a couple of correct guesses, he takes his ‘winnings’ and spends them all in trying to continue his string of luck. Of course he walks away having lost his ‘winnings’ and the shell-master entices someone else to try their luck.

I’ve never seen such a pile of “luck” lined up in 40+ minutes in such a believable way and to such uninterrupted cheering. Experienced newsmen said they began to sense a certain ‘tiredness’ in the clapping and cheering as the end neared but the master of the midway left a cheering crowd all happy and willing to follow their leader over the cliff if necessary. I even noticed the hardened Rahm Emmanuel cheering and clapping although I know he knew a lot of the stuff Mr. Clinton was saying wasn’t demonstrably true.

Frankly, It’s not my game. I don’t know how you take such a mound of half-truths even empty non-truths to which people crowed and cheered and clapped into the night. It’s a losing game for the inexperienced and that’s what we have here in this election. I remember four years ago on election night seeing some visibly poor people dancing into the night believing their debts were paid and now they would be able to get a shiny new car in a more desirable neighborhood. How sorrowful those people must be now (or they might be ready to be taken to the cleaners again) when they find there’s no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Is the Romney/Ryan team up to the task of straightening out the ‘yellow-brick-road’ and its deceptive promises of lots of lucre and riotous living when you just ‘hit it rich’ as promised by the shell game masters. In a way it’s sort of sad – indeed sorrowful – seeing the same type of crowd being taken in again and again by the same speeches and promises. I just hope and pray the ‘spell’ may be broken – and by God’s grace possibly this time it will be and we can begin to see light at the end of the tunnel. Last night it was discouraging.

CAN THE DEMS SURVIVE THEIR OWN CONVENTION?

Just a Minute: Yesterday’s DNC Convention in Charlotte was a sight worth attending, not because of historical significance but as a lesson in human relations.

On Tuesday, I had witnessed a conversation between Sen. Dick Durbin and Fox New’s Correspondent Bret Baier. The conflict came when Bret asked the Senator ‘Why was the language describing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel left out of the Democrat platform; also the name of “God” was removed from the same document after it had been in previous editions of the platform in 2008 and before. Durbin took umbrage at the suggestion Baier voiced about it being a change made for no apparent reason.

Doing further research on the Internet I found there’s a raft of people playing in the comic drama: “Are you better off than you were 4 years ago?” There are at least two dozen TV comics stacking up cordwood on that phrase… so I decided to ignore it. Pay attention to news media if you will -- but you’ll be far better off answering the question yourself with your Bible rather than David Letterman. <> I’m Jack Buttram. (END)

Monday was a rather rugged day with things that didn’t go right and some involving deeper difficulties.

Today is an indication there is going to be difficulties in the air so we’ll just take it as it comes and commit it to the Lord. I’m hoping the convention will go reasonably smoothly… but that’s up to the Lord. It just depends on what He’s trying to show us in these tumultuous times. ‘

I *know* it will come out all correctly because HE is in control of *everything*. I really don’t doubt that for a second. The difficulties are because we –as the Apostle Paul says in I Corinthians 13 – “We see through the glass (probably a mirror) darkly…(indistinctly) …” We – as God’s children are objects of HIS love, and HE will at the proper and opportune time, will reveal to us just what it is (or was) He is teaching us or providing for us so we shall know even as we are known by HIM. So it’s just our job to keep our attention fixed on HIM and HIS love.

Well, that all sounds strange to those who are not ‘in the fold’ so to speak. Jesus says: “My sheep hear my voice and are known of me.” So things are going to come out all right we need not worry. He IS Lord!

Time to turn in the witching hour is past -- time for rest.

WILL WE GO DOWN THE WRONG ROAD AGAIN?

Just a Minute: British historian Paul Johnson describes a significant turning-point in American history in his best-selling book, "Modern Times."

Until the 1960’s, he writes in a chapter called “America’s Suicide Attempt” – public finance had been run along conventional lines – budgets essentially in balance except in exceptional circumstances. The big change came under Kennedy when the Administration began creating budget deficits even when there was no emergency.

Big government you see had become the ‘problem eliminator’. Almost thirty years ago, “Modern Times” introduced that possibility of Trillion-dollar deficits. Today they surpass 16 Trillion. Is Mr. Johnson worried about America’s future?

“Of course I worry about America”-- he says, “The whole world depends on America ultimately, particularly Britain. And also, I love America—a marvelous country. But in a sense I don't worry about America because I think America has such huge strengths -- particularly its freedom of thought and expression -- that it's going to survive as a top nation for the foreseeable future. And therefore take care of the world."

WISE WORDS ACROSS THE TRANSOM -- Just a Minute Radio for Monday 120903

Hey! It’s Labor Day! On toppa that I just wrote a pome. (I know it’s spelled wrong – it’s just one of the tricks I garnered to give me more time for *other* things.

Well what’s the news – what are some of the *other* things you’re spoutin’ about (I ask Humbly – notice I capitalized “Humbly” and made it ‘bold’ because I’m entering on a new program of saving time and being more efficient.

Now I realize looking at an old guy like me you’d say something like: “Your time’s about up anyway – old codger!” and I would agree with you – but I’m undertaking a new project which even though it may be unsuccessful, it at least puts me in the category of trying to learn at least one new thing every so often – as often as I can muster – and it’s supposed to give me a shot at extending the time when I don’t have to put up with my own “Can’t remember what I just said.”- experience…. I think it’s called by the medical name of “Alzheimer’s”.

See I’m entering a new world. *I* didn’t remember that … or recall how to properly set it off in the type face so you would notice it. No! I tricked the typewriter hidden inside this computer into doing it. [Of course it took me nearly five minutes of experimenting and rearranging the commands etc. to get it to do what I wanted. And that’s NOT efficient – nor the goal I had set in my mind. BUT…

I’m giving a chance to the “Dragon” Naturally Speaking program to *teach* me how to do it and with some practice to become an expert. That may be far off over the not- so-nearby horizon – but once again remember I’m fighting two things here… my typing (which is abominable since college days) and time – of which I am running out. (L) – You can see the ‘smiley-face’ isn’t smiling. [Would you believe I had 5 wrong keystrokes embedded in getting that smiley-face to frown?] That see is the key to my problem … I never took the time to learn - which probably would have added 20 years to my lifespan and reduced blood pressure if I had.

Somebody must have written a short two-line poem to take care of making my point here… but I can’t remember it or who.?

Anyway don’t expect miracles – just know that I’m chipping away at the Alzheimer’s ogre staring over my shoulder and making errors for me. BTW…I did have to go back on this paragraph and *copy* Alzheimer’s from the earlier copy. It’s one of those words I seem to *continuously* get wrong -- (I didn’t have to look up continuously but I did have to correct [electronically] the typos… I think it’s if not a losing battle at least a difficult one.

And with that I close out today’s experiment and wish you all a HAPPY LABOR DAY!

WISE WORDS ACROSS THE TRANSOM

Just a Minute: In reading the reactions and commentary in between the GOP and Democrat Conventions, I ran across this from Thomas Sowell, who was born in North Carolina, grew up in Harlem, attended Harvard as a former Marine photographer and is one of America’s best short form news commentators. He is currently the Friedman Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

He recently wrote: (quote) “Barack Obama is one of those people who is often wrong but never in doubt. When he burst upon the national political scene as a presidential candidate in 2008, even some conservatives were impressed by his confidence.

“But confident ignorance is one of the most dangerous qualities in a leader of a nation.

“If he has the rhetorical skills to inspire the same confidence in himself by others, then you have the ingredients for national disaster.” (Unquote)

GRAND OLD PARTY BNEGINS IT'S OFFICIAL RUN UP -- Just a Minute Radio for120831

To use an old FDR era punch line: “The cat has been let out of the cellophane bag!”. That sort of describes what happened at the GOP ‘reducto’ version of the National Convention.

There really wasn’t anything to be decided. By the time everyone got to – or looked in on – the GOP National convention the only thing to be decided was how many days would be occupied by the massive and expensive gathering in Tampa. Everybody knew Mitt Romney would be the nominee and Paul Ryan the nominee for VP… Nothing much else was accomplished except an 82 year old ‘former’ movie star did a rambling and a bit distorted stretch of comedy that some saw as a short ‘derailment’ of what the meeting was all about.

However the children had a great time watching 100,000 balloons float down from the arena’s heights – and hearing some acts that pass in certain circles as music (although *I* can’t really understand why --- but then I don’t even come close to the age group they are trying to attract! I know I don’t have the $$$ they need to make these huge campaigns totter around the country.) And there’s a huge amount of money and effort that goes into the “entertainment” – but at the end of the day it really doesn’t decide much. Plus even Mr. Eastwood’s ‘comedy’ was a somewhat off-color around the edges. But then my viewpoint is that of an old curmudgeon. I guess I would be a poor substitute for the grouchiness of dear old “Andy”.

Actually the London “Telegraph” – although a surviving newspaper – really survives because it dabbles in the electronic world-wide media that really doesn’t touch the people I think it’s aiming at – but is a bit like a billboard poster stuck on a wooden fence. It’s still there but is not really up to the minute news that’s required in this 21^st Century World but it kind of quaint.

Well, enough of the critical view. It’s time to read a good book or something that challenges and informs the brain and heart though it’s sold as entertainment. So you’ve heard enough from me this week. I’ll look for you next week and hope you have a good and healthy and loving weekend. Here’s a lovely thought that comes into my mind at this moment. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Ps 27:1

GRAND OLD PARTY BEGINS ITS OFFICIAL RUN UP

Just a Minute: “Once more into the breach dear friends, once more…” The battle cry of Henry the Fifth that echoed across the fields of Agincourt – at least according to Wm. Shakespeare – echoed across the rain-soaked landscapes of Tampa, Florida as the Republican Party closed out its National Convention at precisely 11:30 last evening after releasing 100,000 balloons and 500 pounds of confetti. The ceremony, prayer and banging gavel climaxed the GOP’s nominating convention and set free the official race between the two major political parties in the US.

Now November 6^th will reveal the winners and losers of the Congressional and Governmental contests – and say, without firing a shot, which party’s candidates will be installed as legislators and government officers in the month of January 2013. Since January 20^th falls on a Sunday the actual ceremony and celebration of the President and Vice President taking office will occur on January twenty first.

The speeches were all made, the music all played on the Thursday of convention week, so next week in Charlotte, it becomes the Democrats’ turn. Look us up Monday. <> I’m Jack Buttram. (END)

PAUL RYAN IS A GOOD SALESMAN -- Just A Minute Radio for Thursday 120830

Things seem to be moving faster and faster – or I’m just getting slower and slower.

In any case I can’t seem to get what needs doin’ in the time I can find to do it. But I’ll keep trying and see where we get.

Paul Ryan’s speech (the introductory one to the Nation it seems from all the promotion) was on last evening and very enjoyable.

I had not realized that he set out on this project – not to become the Vice President, no – to see what could be done to ‘right’ the terrible wrongs that were being created at the beginning of Mr. Obama’s term as President. A Major gathering of government talent was appointed, the President thought it good that they had been appointed (Mr. Ryan was among them because he was ranking member I think of the House Budget Committee.) and they set about their business of building or re-building the budget mess inherited from the previous administration. The President thanked them for their work – sent them on their way -- and never spoke to them as a group since then. No advice, nothing.

Well… that was just the precursor to things going from bad to worse – and the pattern hasn’t changed in the 3.5 years + of the (hopefully) President’s final (DV) term.

I begin to get nauseated when I think about how he has tried to initiate all the 5 TRILLION in additional debt – and stuff like that… and done nothing that even a mentally handicapped President would have tried to do. But maybe he did with secret executive orders – what do we know.

I just know we’re in terribly bad shape financially and every other way when it comes to government. I just breathe a prayer that we will be able to recover governmental equilibrium and come out of this somehow.

The only solution I can think of is committing it fully to the Lord and trusting HIM to bring us out of this spin.

So… being of that mind this late at night when typing and praying… I bid you adieu.

PAUL RYAN IS A GOOD SALESMAN

Just a Minute: Republican Paul Ryan of Wisconsin had a sales job to do in his own party before convinced his fellow Republicans. Before he won the opportunity to join the Romney team and convince America there is a way out of the fiscal forest, he had to make a sale among members of his own party that it can be done. Last night he hammered away convincing the previously un-convinced that Mitt and Paul could make a good team to convince American voters.

Initially he got together a version of his “Roadmap for America’s” future as early as the summer of 2008. He was only able to convince eight GOP House members to sign on for his ambitious “wish list”. Some were not only taken aback but openly hostile to the idea for it included such ‘sacred cows’ as: rewrite the tax code, kill employer based health care, rewrite Medicare and Social Security. But nowadays you’re hard pressed to find any Republicans who’ll admit to being skeptical. They’re believers on the road to reclaiming the White House.

Great to have you with us today.

Seems like there’s more excitement down South than is easily managed. The GOP National Nominating Convention has actually been in session in Tampa (but cut short by a day) by hurricane “Isis” that’s decided to sit over New Orleans and dump 50 inches of water plus a very strong storm surge on that city that suffered so much during Katrina’s visit seven years ago.

Personally, we are still trying to get our son Kim out of a coma occasioned by a pedestrian/auto accident that happened on July 4^th – and complications have arisen due to restrictions on hospital availability and other treatment conflicts so it’s like juggling more ‘balls in the air’ than a non juggler can readily handle. So we’d greatly appreciate your continued prayers in that regard.

Mrs. Romney did an excellent job – for which she is not professionally trained as a speaker – last evening. I think I’m correct in saying Mr. Paul Ryan is in the on-deck circle for tonight and Mr. Romney himself on Thursday – which will conclude the GOP’s turn. I would also guess this means from now on the conventions will go with a three night convention rather than the more usual 4 night stand. Probably something the networks can handle more readily. (They used to go for at least a week – but expenses being what they are?)

I’ve only been personally involved in a San Francisco Convention in 1964 – all the rest since that landmark one have been from afar. I guess one was enough. (J)

But it’s something that ‘convention’ says must be done – someway – Maybe we’ll come up with something like automatic “Smartphone polling” that will eliminate conventions or whatever altogether. I think Russia, Libya or Egypt have done that already. Would you really prefer it? [Just kidding.] I think all this excitement has probably affected my judgment somehow. Lots of fuzzballs… stories in the making… floating around.

But with the Hurricane off the coast of Florida and all the buzz songs in the air – we’re having trouble sorting the news from the noise.

Still and all it is an exciting time to be at the GOP Convention… even if they did decide to scrub the first day due to the Hurricane’s uncertainty. Seems like things on that order always happen. Here we’ve been being good ‘little people’ coming all the way down to Florida to get a glimpse of ‘history in the making’ and what do we get? Another day of yammering around and hoping something newsworthy will come out of it.

[It seldom does – or if it does it comes by accident rather than planning.] This displaced keyboard is simmering my sauce. I take 60 some years to teach my right hand little pinky where the backspace key is… and then the keyboard mfg. moves it a half a key away and messes up my 40 years of learning how to hunt- and- peck at a reasonable speed. With my little flat top grey Corona (or something like that) I was pretty good at cranking out copy on the run… now comes this extra half key space… and fouls me up again. But it gives us something to count on – and rid ourselves of idleness otherwise.

I don’t know if I’ll ever have it mastered again. But I guess it’s *my bad* since I never put aside the time to learn touch-typing. Nowadays I’m not too bad about it if I have the right size keyboard… but I spent good money for this keyboard… and it contributes to my slowness not my speed.

Well, the witching hour is here and I’m off to never, never land where the typos play and the carbon copies have flown away. I think I’ll hit the hay. Look, look I shudda bin a poet… Na…I dropped too many mistakes – made the speech-totype people nervous.

WHAT WAS THE VIEW FROM THE MOON?

Just a Minute: Astronaut Neil Armstrong died Saturday, age 82, the first man to walk on the moon. During the Oral History project at the NASA Space Center he described some aspects of the 1969 Apollo II Mission to the moon. “I certainly was aware of the fact this was the culmination of the work of three to four hundred thousand people over a decade …and that the nation’s hopes and outward appearance largely rested on how those hopes came out. … It seemed to me the most important thing we could do was to focus on our job and … and try to allow nothing to distract us from doing the very best we could.”

Astronaut Armstrong added: “You could stand across the street from the Manned Spacecraft Center; you could not tell when quitting time was because people didn’t leave at quitting time… They just worked and worked until the job was done… they just did it. … Whenever you have those ingredients you’re going to win.” That was July 20^th 1969.

NEW OWNER OF BJU RADIO STATION -- Just a Minute Radio for Monday 120827

This is a surprise package. I guess I had an idea something like this might be coming down the pike – but it caught me flatfooted.

I’m no great detective, but I did know that Bob Jones University had been looking for some time for a way to sell their radio station in Greenville.

Since I was first employed as an announcer in the fall of 1949 when the original 1 KW AM station went on the air in September – the opening days of the school year. I jumped at the chance to work for the station. [So I was such a poor announcer I got fired twice the first year…but eventually convinced them I *could* read and got hired on as an engineer (J).]

It’s a long story and I’m already beyond deadline time. So I’ll tell you about it sometime when we have time to chat. But the WMUU Facility will (or perhaps has) become the property of Salem Radio Network. They go by SRN news… and are currently the news broadcasters on WMUU-FM.

It’s a lot of detail to go into and I don’t know much about it – really! – so don’t let me waste your time. But we’ll all probably know a good deal more before too long when we get more details. Both the University and SRN indicate it will not be making radical changes and it will still harbor good music and Gospel programs. Beyond that… SRN will be telling you more – and more than I know.

NEW OWNER OF BJU RADIO STATION

Just a Minute: Friday afternoon BJU-Radio listeners found they would soon be listening to Salem Radio Network the new owner of WMUU-FM in Greenville. At 5:05 PM Friday afternoon a special program hosted by Station Manager Paul Wright announced the change to listeners alerted to be tuned in for a “special” program on August 24^th.

The news was a surprise to most of the staff and audience of the 100 kilowatt FM station known as – WMUU which originally stood for “World’s Most Unusual University. It had begun its radio life September 15^th 1949 on the University campus eventually adding FM to the original one kilowatt AM station and then adding a mountain-top transmitter upping its antenna height giving coverage in states adjacent to South Carolina.

The University Chancellor Dr. Bob Jones III, CEO of the Gospel Fellowship Association the station’s current owner; Participated with Stuart Epperson, CEO of Salem Radio Network – also a BJU graduate. They indicated the station will continue to be a strong Gospel and good music facility in upper South Carolina.

SCHOOL VOUCHER SUCCESS IN SPOTLIGHT -- Just a Minute Radio for Friday 120824

Don’t let the week get you down. We’re about to get out of August and into September and lots of things change. The color of leaves is just beginning.

But there are more life changing things – getting ready for the November 6^th election is just one but an *important* one. That one will make you teeth chatter (maybe) for at least four years – except when you go to college.

When you go to college it looks like a Mt. Everest in front of you, especially when you come up against something like math or history – or Chinese (history or language) – and so you set to work first a spoonful at a time getting larger and larger… and first thing you know you’re in the middle of 9 week exams… and it’s Thanksgiving and Christmas looking down you chimney – And … how’re you doing… better than you thought? Worse than you thought?…well, at least it’s progress.

And then it’s Winter…over…and spring busting out all over…and you sit through the first year’s exams in hotting up weather… and the next thing you know you’re pushing for the finals… and Bingo! You’re out (one way or another) Where did all the time go and … and … time to say good by to all the friends or… Heeeelllllooo to the lovely young ladies… and Next thing you know – it’s wedding bells… or not…. Well…we have to stop this movie somewhere… it goes FAST!... The only thing that’s faster is growing up children and grandchildren….and GREAT Grandchildren… and then what…?

That’s the question you needed to be asking when you were in the first class… but you forgot…. Better try to remember… try to remember ahead of time.

Well …that was a hurried trip. Be sure and take your Bible along…it’s easy to neglect but rewarding to study and pay attention.

SCHOOL-VOUCHER SUCCESS IN SPOTLIGHT

Just a Minute: School vouchers have been around longer than most of us suspect. In Vermont and Main they date back to the 1800’s and overseas in the Netherlands more than 70% of pupils attend privately run but publicly funded schools. Nobel Prize winner economist Milton Friedman argued for the modern concept of vouchers in the 1950s. His view was competition would improve schools as well as cost efficiency. Perhaps Mr. Obama would reconsider his views on vouchers when he learns in New York schools African American kids winning a voucher lottery to attend private schools were 24% more likely to attend college. That’s the result of tracking enrollment from kindergarten in 1997 to college enrollment in 2011. The only difference was the ‘luck of the draw’.

Cost in public schools was $5,000 compared with $2,400 in private schools. A voucher winning African-American mother at a focus group session in 1999 said of her 8 year old in third grade: “It’s miraculous the way she has changed.” Education unions stand out as the biggest obstacles to change. <> I’m Jack Buttram (END)

IS JOE BIDEN THE NEXT LATE NITE TV STAR? -- Just a Minute Radio for Thursday 120823

Having some ‘falling apart’ issues with the computer or its operator it seems. But all will come right shortly I’m sure. The Lord never fails. (J)

We’re getting into the thick of things now. Be careful not to wear things that are sensitive to spattered mud. It will fly thick and fast from now ‘till November I suspect. Why am I so morose about these things you ask?

Well my first ‘wet behind the years campaign was the summer of 1964 in San Francisco when Sen. Barry Goldwater ran in reluctant opposition to Lyndon Baines Johnson. I say reluctantly because Mr. Goldwater had planned to run against Jack Kennedy, which he thought would be a real challenge and I guess a lot of fun. I’m guessing he thought JFK could be bested. But it would have been a tussle and by no means would Goldwater have walked over him in the contest. But sadly enough that did not happen.

So I got enough “losing” in that contest to last me all the rest of my years – and though we have won some and lost some more… I have never harbored the idea any more that running for office is easy. It may be – but it’s not my game. I’m glad we have the system… it has its faults and I suppose its advantages – and I’m glad we have people who have the temperament for it. But it’s not my game I say again. I’d rather go fishing… and I don’t even like to go fishing. (L)

What does that make me? Do you know what curmudgeon describes? I’m not too sure either – but from being around politics… I guess it’ll do for an adjective.

Some people love the fray… and blessings be on them (when they are honest) – the difficulties come when men and women come without ethics and the Lord to guide them… I know… I know that kind of sentiment draws catcalls from the peanut gallery – so I think I’ll duck out – not because I’m afraid. Somebody has to do it… I just think you have to be ‘called’ to do it…and I’ve not heard the call…. But I’ll do my best to support the men and women whom God has called.

I hadn’t intended to get off in this ditch so early tonight – (when I write) but I’ve counted up the scars and bruises and I think you’d better be in good shape and close to the Lord before you head into that arena. --- I’m closin’ up shop for tonight. Have a great day tomorrow.

IS JOE BIDEN THE NEXT LATE NITE TV STAR?

Just a Minute: There seems to be a major conflict going on for late night TV audience ratings; and Vice President Joe Biden is taking the lead. The regulars appear to be losing audience as they look and book news and entertainment features. Meantime Joe Biden is trying out comedy lines like – “The number one problem facing the middle class happens to be … a three letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S, jobs.”

Or he asks wheel chair-bound Missouri State Senator Chuck Graham to “Stand up and let ‘em see you.” Finally, speaking to a largely black audience he said, “Yeah, They gonna put Y’all back in chains!” – adding a pseudo Southern accent at no extra charge.

Joseph Epstein, NYT satire writer, says he’s already beginning to miss the comedy relief no other politician supplies -- which is normally in short supply. And if the President were to listen to those who say take Joe Biden off the ticket he would spike the unemployment numbers among joke writers of late night comedy – it might even hold back economic recovery. <> I’m Jack Buttram (END)

CAN'T STAND THE HEAT? -- LEAVE THE KITCHEN! -- Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 120822

The “Visitors” go first and the Home team last – at least in Baseball. So we’re winding down to the last about 2.5 months in this *terribly* long campaign that seems as if it has gone on forever!

So here we are with many things on our hands… children getting back in school… New teachers, books that cost $$$... new people to meet things to do – but it’s like opening up a new book or heading out on a new adventure.

EXCEPT – if you flunked that last half year of trigonometry or the first one of algebra and realize that neither math nor music was something you were cut out for – Now what am I going to do? Four years and 18 semester hours of a foreign language later… and a low score on the permanent record exam – Oh well you didn’t want to go to graduate school anyway.

Now here you are at 80 and ½ years into life and still haven’t got a clear idea of what you’re really aiming for – and the guy comes on the radio and says – “Remember boys and girls – to aim at nothing is to hit it!” And only now does the full import of what that means settles around your imaginary shoulders and you wonder if there’s more room on the island where R.L. Stevenson is settled in the Pacific

Nah… never give in – never give up… never, never, never that’s what Winston Churchill said in one of the shortest speeches recorded in English Lit. That’s why you can remember it.

So – pull up your suspenders -- re-tie the shoe laces… and give it another try you know that’s kind of a hollow sound to that at your age… but…well we keep trying. (J)

SOMETIME YOU NEED TO TAKE A SECOND LOOK -- Just a Minute Radio for Tuesday 120821

Today we’re taking a second look at what’s going on with the claims the President is making and what is actually happening.

It will be difficult and we need all the watchdogs (and cats) we can muster to see where “what’s being said is matched with what’s being done.” Case in point is on the alleged taking from Medicare to pay for Obama care.

In situations like this it’s very easy to make one transaction *look* like another when really it isn’t. Another spoof is to break up the movements of $$$ to the point it takes a Philadelphia lawyer to figure out what’s really going on. Those are the kinds of things that require a bloodhound’s nose and eagles’s eyes.

When government technicians go on a secretive ‘rampage’ it’s like a carny shell game and hard to tell which shell is hiding the pea.

Only the Lord is able to get us through this next period of deception and slight of hand or eye. We’ll have to depend deeply upon the Holy Spirit to guide us to our discovering evidence. The other side knows we’re looking out for them and this will be the most difficult part of wresting the controls back into the hands where control belongs – not from just where it *seems* to belong.

I’m not quite sure *why* I feel so strongly about this, but I am convinced that if we do not do the work diligently, we will be overcome with those whose motives are not pure.

America is free – but we are going to have to be doubly diligent to see that she remains free, so sharpen your eyes and ask the Lord to bring you through. That is how this battle is going to be won – and it’s not even quite in the beginning stages yet – that means we must not go to sleep or become drowsy when it comes to deception. Just ask the Lord to help us all.

SOME TIME YOU NEED TO TAKE A SECOND LOOK

Just a Minute: As a youngseter I was an avid movie fan. Mostly Cowboy pics like “My Friend Flicka.” But yesterday my wife and daughter saw “2016” because of its high recommendation. The film is written and narrated by Dineshe D’Souza – who often writes for National Review. It’s a highly regarded revelation of what America is liable to face if in 77 days it re-elects President Obama for four more years.

“If you are his brother has he been your keeper?” the filmmaker asks. “Go ask him,” his half brother George replies. The 30-year-old half-brother George handsome and affable on screen, is the youngest of seven children that Barack Obama, Sr. had fathered with four wives. D’Dsouza referred to him as “the black sheep” of the Obama family and adds, “He lives in rubble on a few dollars a day while his powerful multi-millionairebrother doesn’t lift a finger to help him.”

It’s a film that will give any viewer a new and more revealing look into the man who is asking America to trust him with another four years of occupying the President’s chair. <> I’m Jack Buttram (END)

INCORRECT CONCLUSIONS -- AGAIN -- FOR Just a Minute radio Monday 120820

Things get terribly convoluted when the activity picks up around here. And in what Peggy Noonan calls “The golden age of mudlslinging” the wheels in some instances come off the rails.

Both sides seem to get caught up in the process of traveling and meeting and, etc., etc.’ etc.’ until the breaking point is approached. However since Mr. Romney has been on this schedule for a tad longer than Mr. Ryan has, his ability to speak longer and in more coherent and well timed sentences is apparent. It’s not that Mr. Romney has gone ‘up the spout’ as has Joe Biden – but he does have a higher stutter-stammer quotient than the ‘cool man’ from Janesville – who cruises along as if it were a calm day at lake Placid.

Anyway—we’re just about to enter the ‘convention’ series (August 27^th I think) of what’s happening, and there will be some shifting among the standings as we pull into that phase. However I don’t know what’s going to keep the Democrats awake during the second week of TV coverage – But it’s going to be the FIRST time a major political party has appointed Charlotte (Queen city of the South they say) as it’s convention city. The first four nights will be in a major auditorium and the last one – where the presumably nominated Obama will speak – is in the largest outdoor stadium in the city. (If it rains… I dunno?)

You will be covered up with info on these conventions with their coverage. I think I’ll lay low except for the minutiae – nobody wants to waste their money on that. Perhaps that will be a rich ground for the less obvious stories. We’ll see.

INCORRECT CONCLUSIONS -- AGAIN

Just a Minute: About a month ago, I quoted Samuel Adams, saying: ”[Never]… have the wisest constitution nor the wisest laws secured the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt” Now it turns out Paul Ryan – the Romney pick for Vice President -- but then a newbie member of the House of Representatives -- was pleading along with only 12 other Congressmen – to reduce the risks to taxpayers assumed by Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae.

President Obama is forever complaining about the “mess that got us into this fix.” – blaming it on Romney & Ryan. But according to a weekend editorial in the WALL ST JOURNAL, Romney was never in the Congress and Ryan’s voice was ignored by an indifferent Congress who never gave attention to the rising Senator Obama – later President – from Illinois.

Now, somewhat late, what the JOURNAL calls “the Toxic Twins” are being reigned-in a bit even though under the Senator/(slash) President’s nose he participated in the excesses of Fanny and Freddy that helped bring on the housing collapse that plagues us today.
