Warning: The following review may contain spoilers not only for this movie, but other Marvel movies also. Please read cautiously.

Thor is back, and his rippling pectorals are once more on the big screen in eye popping 3D, which means we all get to pay a little extra to wear funny sun glasses in a dark room. In this installment Thor faces off against an evil thought to be destroyed, for an item thought to be destroyed, in a sequel which could destroy the franchise. Inspiring as always.

I’m sure that if you are reading this you are no stranger to the theory that sequels are always worse than the original. This movie however throws an interesting slant on the argument, because technically The Avengers is the sequel to Thor (and Captain America, and The Incredible Hulk, and is number three in the Iron Man movies, despite what the movie titles will tell you), and The Avengers was fantastic. So this is the third Thor movie, and again according to the theory the third movie is better than the second.

Alas, not so in this case.

In Thor, our blonde hero was a petulant child, who had his favorite toy taken away, until he learned to play well with others. Here, Thor plays the part of the wizened warrior, yearning for the love he is separated from. A tragic story, that anywhere else would make this a gripping romantic drama. Thankfully, an ancient and evil race of elves long since thought dead return to steal a weapon that can unravel the universe as we know it (if that part sounds familiar, it’s very similar to the plot of Hellboy:2). And, due to a rather unsurprising turn of events that, to be honest seem to defy logic, Thor has to enlist his nemesis and step-brother Loki in order to defeat the ultimate movie villain; an Englishman playing the bad guy (seriously, they are everywhere!).

Now, while I have been rather harsh on the movie until now, that does not mean there were not moments I did not like. In fact, overall I enjoyed Thor 2, but I can by no means call it a quality movie. Is it fun? Yes. Is it on par with the first Thor movie? Absolutely. If you liked the first movie, or any of the Marvel movies, would you like this one? Of course. But will this movie draw new followers to the franchise? The answer is a resounding no. Apart from the section of women (or men) who tune in for the 6 second feast of Chris Hemsworth topless in leather pants. Thor 2 does not enrich the universe in which it plays, nor I suspect will the upcoming Captain America 2 (or the steaming turd that was Iron Man 3 for that matter).

While the comedy in the movie in some way helps to paper over the glaring plot holes, I can not forgive the greatest sin of movies in my opinion – Forgetting or Ignoring that which came before. Thor 1 gave us an introduction to the world of Asgard which this movie seems to ignore. Not just the architecture, though there seems to have been some serious column work done in the last few months in Asgard, but the technology and way of life of those who live there are completely different from the original. And the relationships and characters differ from the movies that come before. When I say this, I do not mean they took what existed, and built on it; I mean they took what existed and threw it out the window. The portrayal of Erik Selvig is but one example I can give, and I as I don’t want to spoil it for those who are yet to see it, I shall simply say that I think they took it a little far, and leave it at that.

Yet with all it’s faults, I’m sure that when the Blu-ray version comes out, it will take a place on my wall along side it’s brethren, and will become a sunny afternoon/rainy day movie to be enjoyed for years to come. Even if only in a sequence of other Marvel Movies.
