For all of us at the corporate headquarters for Scripps Networks in Knoxville, today was truly a treat. This morning was the grand opening of a Food Network Kitchen in our building. Work has been going on for months and finally we were able to see the results of all the hard work. The food is fresh, delicious and healthy, everything you’d expect from Food Network. There have been free samples all day. One of the things I’m most excited about is the Starbucks that is a part of it. With a barista in house, it’s not just coffee but also specialty drinks throughout the day. I took a few pictures but honestly they don’t do it justice. With winter coming up, it makes our new Food Network Kitchen even that more enticing.

One of the big questions that I hear often at work is: Does anyone click on paid ads? As a digital marketing who buys the ads, there is no doubt that they do and our reporting proves that people not only click the ads but they also convert. Wordstream did some research and put together this amazing infographic regarding how pay per click ads are taking over Google’s search engine results page. The stat that really stood out is:

Clicks on paid search listings beat out organic clicks by nearly a 2:1 margin for keywords with high commercial intent in the US.

I’ll be taking part in an online chat entitled The Latest Trends in Social Media for Cable Communicators on July 13th 2010 from 2:00-3:00 edt along with 4 other media professionals. The discussion is hosted by the Association of Cable Communicators and should prove to be insightful. For more info visit their website.

Here is a blurb about it:

Social Media has been the latest, greatest communications tool for a few years. It is changing how and where people communicate, but some of the challenges of the medium are more apparent now. How are cable communicators using social media today? How can you use social media to achieve company’s business goals? Conversely, when would another communications tactic be a better choice? ACC is lining up several cable communicators to share how they are using social media successfully and give you ideas about how you can improve your efforts and when another tactic may be the better choice. All cable communicators are encouraged to join this ACC Online Chat and share tips on how they have succeeded online and how they decide when and when not to use social media.

When Mojo HD ceased to exist, Fine Living which is one of the TV Networks that we operate brought the television show Three Sheets over. If you have never watched the show, basically it features host Zane Lamprey traveling around the world drinking in various watering holes getting to know local culture and customs. It’s an entertaining but also very educational. I’ve been working on the social marketing piece for a while which you can see here Facebook.com/ThreeSheets.

I actually was able to interview Zane a while back and just got around to posting the video on YouTube. Below I’ve embedded the video. Soon Fine Living is going to be switched over to Cooking Channel so we’re all very excited about Three Sheets running on the Travel Channel (for now) Wednesdays at 11pm ET/PT. If you haven’t got a chance to watch, I definitely recommend it. You can see full episodes on Hulu here.

Nearly all businesses today see the value in social media but have a tough time figuring out how to use it properly. Instead of deciding prematurely that an app is what they need or that they need to create a fanpage on Facebook, it’s wise to determine what your trying to accomplish first and then choose the correct medium for the job.

Recently my role at Scripps Networks has grown and I now oversee Social Media for our shelter category which includes brands such as HGTV and DIY Network. Over the past week, I’ve had the opportunity to leverage the functionality of Facebook in a way that has proved beneficial for not only our brands but for fans of our brands as well. Hopefully the example below from what I did with DIY Network will help whoever is reading this to do something similar for their brand.

DIY Network

Last Thursday I was informed of an in-store event between DIY Network and Lowes. The TV show Yard Crashers was going to be at a Lowes in Tampa where 1 lucky person would get a landscaping makeover. Immediately it seemed like a great opportunity to leverage the marketing capabilities on Facebook and to start letting our current fans in that area know we were going to be there in just 3 short days.

We had little budget but a great opportunity so what could we do with little to no resources and 3 days before the event?

The first thing I did was ask for a very minimal budget to buy targeted advertising around people living in the Tampa area who were interested in landscaping. Depending on your budget, you could broaden your targeting or even go more granular. Below is an example of an ad that ran:

As you can see from the ad we needed a place to land people in order to give them more information about the event so in conjunction with the ad buy, we created an event on Facebook. Doing this allowed us to add detailed information about the show, why it was coming to Tampa and what was in it for local residents of the Tampa area.

You can view the RSVP page here but here is a screenshot:

We also posted a Facebook update to our current fans letting them know about the event with a link to the RSVP page:

The final thing we did was leverage our relationship with HGTV and sent a targeted note out to HGTV Facebook fans located in Tampa only so as to not bother fans with information not relevant to them.

As you can see, what we did wasn’t anything over the top but it was effective. Instead of going out and spending a lot of money on something that we thought would be cool, we tried to think about the fan and what was in it for them. Based on the feedback we received from the event yesterday it was a huge success and we’ve even had fans post pictures from the event yesterday. Hopefully you’re able to get a few takeaways from this rapidly put together post.

The company I work for is making a lot of international moves as of late, recently launching Food Network in the UK and today we announced, that we’re building on our international operations by entering into a joint venture with India’s NDTV Group. Below is the press release.

CINCINNATI – Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. (NYSE: SNI) will expand into India by entering into a strategic partnership with the country’s leading broadcaster, NDTV Group.

The proposed transaction will result in Scripps Networks Interactive acquiring 69 percent of NDTV Group’s lifestyle programming subsidiary, NDTV Lifestyle. NDTV Lifestyle is anchored by NDTV Good Times, India’s top-ranked English-language lifestyle television channel. NDTV Group will retain a 31 percent stake in the joint venture.

Scripps Networks Interactive and NDTV Group reached a definitive agreement on the $55 million transaction Wednesday night. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter 2010.

“We know our lifestyle brands play well around the globe, and NDTV Good Times channel and NDTV Lifestyle serve as sturdy platforms for us to build lifestyle television programming businesses in one of the world’s most promising media marketplaces,” said Greg Moyer, president of Scripps Networks International. “With the NDTV Group, we’ve chosen a knowledgeable, highly respected partner that has a deep understanding of what it takes to engage and delight media consumers in India. This partnership gives us tremendous entrée to India’s television-viewing and Internet-browsing public.”

Scripps Networks Interactive has made international expansion one of its primary business objectives.

The proposed joint venture with the NDTV Group follows the formation of two other partnerships this year that will result in significant distribution of the Scripps-owned Food Network in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Food Network reaches about 10 million homes in the United Kingdom following its launch on Sky Nov. 9.

The NDTV Group is India’s leading broadcaster and producer of news and current affairs programming. It has 20 years of experience in the television industry and is widely recognized as the pioneer of news television in India.
