My friends, please join me next Thursday, January 19th, 2012 at the Hillyer Art Space for their January Soapbox performance art series. Please join me as I perform one of my newest performance art pieces live, called Conduit, at the Hillyer Art Space. I am very fortunate and honored to be invited to perform alongside two fellow performance artists (Carolyn Becker and Celeste Merie Welch) in the first of Hillyer Art Space’s 2012 Soapbox series. The Soaphox series is a monthly performance art series at Hillyer Art Space, which seeks to bolster and expand performance art in and around Washington, D.C. $5 suggested donation. January Soapbox at Hillyer Art Space

Conduit is a performance piece crafted to allow the performer to communicate melody and raw emotion through his movement and sound alone. By suggesting steady rhythm through dance, the sound of human breath and the beats made by hitting the ground are emphasized to exalt the power of being “in the moment.” Conduit‘s concept illustrates the mantra, “If I can do it, You can do it: If I am a conduit, you are a conduit.” The purpose of the piece, while autobiographical, has an easy to grasp universality. Its symbolic gestures become its tool so its live audience can easily grasp that message. Many of my pieces speak about the growth-process after emotional strain, yet unlike the rest, Conduit does not address reflection, instead it reinterprets the ‘from bad comes good’ by focusing on the good: specifically, why being a messenger of good is so important.

Conduit is the fifth in my Series body of works, chronicling my visual and performance artworks based on specific mantras/terms that develop into multiple versions of each piece.

Take time to laugh

I’m sitting with my good friend Pat here, and we are watching funny videos on Youtube. Well, actually, I’m now listening to Lana Del Rey cause I love her sound, but anyway… The moral of the day is that it’s important to spend your time laughing with friends and watching/reading whatever brings a smile to your face. Some of the “youtube videos” I classify as Performance Art, albeit mediatized humor with a conscious self-existence. Most are just performances, but aren’t conceptual or abstracted enough for my tastes, but are still really amusing. I find it “good” for the most part, but ironically, I think when your “bent” is to create superficial or short-nothing videos, you aren’t exactly capturing your artistry in the best form. Some get it just right, some…not so much. Learning curve. Nonetheless, if being an artist is regularly committing to your work, you rock it out Youtube generation.

Watching these videos reminds me of the wide scope of artistry and more catching–why people reach out to others and take the time to watch others’ views. I remember reading some TIME magazine piece about the self-cooking shows and other inventive memes. If this is the future, I look forward to seeing how the practice and subculture grows.

And how I can create something that is reminiscent but something its own.

Happy New Year! While it may be frosty out, with enough energy and good humor we can stay warm within! This month I’ve got an artist talk (tonight!) at the Hyattsville Busboys & Poets First Fridays, and I’ll be performing one of my newest performance art pieces at the Hillyer Art Space’s Soapbox in a few weeks. As I get ready for February, I’m hoping to release information on a few upcoming events throughout the month, and I can already let you know that my Artist Talk for the Gateway Arts Center Artist In Residency Program is Saturday, February 25th, at 2pm. Hope to see you!

1) Thirst at the 39th Street Gallery

–> Opening Reception: Saturday, January 7th, at 5:30pm

An installation by J.J. McCracken, curated by Claire Huschle, runs January 7 through February 18, 2012. Free to the public. “Thirst is a response to McCracken’s two-person performance Thirst, and the Martyr. Both works draw attention to access to resources, asking viewers to consider scarcity and abundance, both locally and globally. Where the performance allowed for a passive reception, however, Thirst places performative responsibility on the audience. Viewers are required to keep their attention fixed upon their senses, movement, and personal space. In this light, the installation invokes experiences both familiar and foreign.” —Claire Huschle, Curator.Also in the 39th Street Corridor Exhibition Space, POLYMORPHISM:Mutations in Art. Happy New Year! I’ve been thinking of a few ideas for some performance art pieces I want to create. One’s definitely a video, one’s an upcoming live performance (news coming soon!). Rather than talk about the ideas floating around in my head, here’s an artist I just found online via Abduzeedo, her name is Natsumi Hayashi aka yowayowa camera woman.
