But something changed a couple days ago — tweets started showing up almost instaneously in feeds, after they were posted on Twitter. That’s because FriendFeed is testing a new type of backend feed that Twitter is developing.

This new feed is interesting because up until now, FriendFeed has been one of the few services with access to Twitter’s XMPP feed. Some have called the XMPP feed the “fire hose,” because it sends out a massive amount of data quickly, as opposed to importing a feed by way of RSS, which is limited and slow. But XMPP has been anything but fast these past few months, so a new solution was needed.

This new feed is still experimental, but here’s what we know: It’s HTTP-based, and, at least for FriendFeed, it will replace the XMPP feed. Twitter is using FriendFeed as a testing ground for it, but eventually, if it works, it should be opened to other services. “Hopefully we can identify what works and what doesn’t. Whatever we determine from this test, will inform how we move forward,” Twitter’s Jason Goldman tells me.

And it has been a bit glitchy so far. When FriendFeed first implemented it on Wednesday, it was nearly instaneous — FriendFeed co-founder Paul Buchheit sent out a tweet and one second later it was on FriendFeed. But in subsequent days, the feed slowed down quite a bit, sometimes taking as much as 20 minutes for a tweet to come though. It was a bug that Twitter believes it has fixed, according to Buchheit.

Twitter is an important part of FriendFeed, as tweets make up a high percentage of content on the site. Of course, Twitter is becoming an important part of a lot of services, so hopefully this HTTP-based feed will one day mean near-instantaneous tweet access for all.

His response was appropriately humble, but you can't help but wonder how long it will be before Facebook, Twitter and FriendFeed all start to look pretty much identical as the services simply copy the best features from their competitors.

One thing is for sure, though: FriendFeed moves the fastest. They were the first to add comments to status updates, the first to bring in third party feeds and the first to realize the value of search. They also experimented with real time streams way before the others. So much of what they've done first has been copied by others - even Google has dipped into the well.

Now FriendFeed is taking the next step in its evolution with a complete redesign and lots of new features. We were able to see a demo of the new site last week and have been testing it over the weekend. Our opinion: the new FriendFeed, which launches into beta today, is simpler, faster and better than the old FriendFeed. In fact, it may be a little too fast.

TechCrunchIT

SENIOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEER - Caracas

Senior Telecommunications Technicians install, operate, maintain, monitor and repair telecommunications equipment DWDM, SONET/SDH and associated infrastructure equipment (GENSET, UPS and AC) installed in cable landing stations.
Professional contacts? Even groups on LinkedIn? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then we have just the right thing for you. LinkedIn has released a bookmarklet which allows you to share news with your LinkedIn connections, company group, or user created groups from anywhere on the web.

When we last launched this feature it was only available to Firefox users and at that point in time you could not share news with user created groups. With this release, we have expanded functionality to include Internet Explorer users as well.

Simply add the bookmarklet to your IE or Firefox browser from here and begin sharing!

At first they tried Google's Chrome browser out of curiosity. Now, the growing ranks of those who have switched to Chrome (or vacillate, like CNET's own Stephen Shankland) will be looking for browser support services and add-ons to complete the transition.

The latest version of the free, solid Internet privacy application CCleaner is one app to oblige. In late December, it added Chrome to its list of supported browsers, along with Internet Explorer, Mozilla/Firefox, Safari, and Opera.

CCleaner actually reaches deeper in Chrome than in Opera and Safari, dumping the download history and saved form information in addition to cookies, Internet history, and Internet cache. Of course, Internet history has become more virtue than vice as a searching time-saver, and any of the cleaning options may be easily skipped from the scan.

We're glad to see the well-regarded CCleaner taking Chrome on board at this relatively early stage, and we hope other developers soon follow suit.

But sometimes it's not my fault: if they send me a link to a YouTube video, I have to open another tab in order to watch it. To help with this, we've just added a new feature to Gmail chat: YouTube and Google Video previews. If you receive (or send) a link to a video in a chat message, you'll see a preview of the video right in your chat window.

Click the preview, and the video will play right there. For quite some time there have been rumblings about "GDrive," some kind of online storage site. Despite the demise of AOL's XDrive storage service and the closure of various not-so-great-after-all Google projects, including Google's Palimpsest project for storing research data, the possibility remains that the company could offer some sort of online storage system. Google is after all a big fan of cloud computing, and data storage is an important piece of the possible architecture.

A project called Platypus in 2006 indicated that Google employees get internal storage, which makes sense even from a backup and corporate IT perspective. There were some new noises on Sunday at Google Blogoscoped that sniffed out references to another possibility, though, called Google Web Drive.

The new Picasa for Mac beta version included a "Move to Collection" command for handling folders, and one option is "Google Web Drive," according to the post. Google confirmed that the menu item was present in the software but was removed a day after release in an update, but the company wouldn't comment further.

And a further Blogoscoped posting Tuesday referred to a now-deleted online document that mentioned not just Platypus, but also Google Web Drive.

Google already offers online storage, of course, with Gmail, Google Docs, Picasa Web Albums, YouTube and any number of other services. The question is whether the company sees merit to a general-purpose file repository. Microsoft offers such a beast with its free 25GB storage through SkyDrive--helpfully synchronizing local and cloud-based files through Live Mesh, and Yahoo has its Briefcase, so there are precedents among competitors.

But here's the catch. The more useful an online storage system is, the harder it is to build and the more expensive it is to run.

A password-protected general-purpose online file system is easier to do with a basic Web site for uploading or downloading files. But what about tighter integration with computers, so for example you could set up Quicken to back up records to an Internet-based service the same way it can with, for example, a USB drive? How about natively supporting different operating systems, each with different file systems? How about automated backup of your entire hard drive?

The technology quickly gets more complicated, and storage is something you don't want to mess up. People get angry when their data disappears.

But it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. Google could offer it to paying Google Apps corporate customers, either included in their subscriptions or as a premium option. That would defray the expense of operating at scale and limit it to a more manageable size of users while potentially making Google Apps more appealing.

IBM just announced Lotus Notes ActiveSync support will be released later this year. The code is already live, and was demonstrated in a seminar earlier today at Lotusphere.

This is native integration with the iPhone–within the native mail, calendar, and contacts. Previously, iPhone users were forced to use the mobile Safari browser to access the Notes Web Access interface.

Lotus is playing catchup with Microsoft, who released push e-mail for Microsoft Exchange in March 2008.

No news yet on Android support, though Ed Brill, IBM Director of Messaging, said few customers are requesting Android support. Similarly, nothing was said about supporting the new Palm Pre platform.

On Monday Mozilla released a new version of Ubiquity, the in-browser command line-like utility. While mostly a "stability" update, the add-on has undergone considerable cosmetic change as well, sporting a new dark plastic look. This look can be changed by anyone as part of a new styling system that uses simple CSS. Presumably, user-designed themes will go into an add-ons site as the product matures.

In addition to its new look, Ubiquity now borrows a few features from Firefox 3's "awesome bar." It remembers some of the commands you've used in the past and will let you hop to them right away when starting a new command. For instance, if you frequently use the integrated Wikipedia look-up, simply typing "w" into Ubiquity will pull it up as one of the top search options.

If you haven't yet tried Ubiquity I'd recommend giving it a spin with this update. It's come a long way since earlier releases and can be genuinely useful if you take the time to learn some of the commands. Future releases will no doubt smooth out that learning curve and make it a little easier for the less tech-savvy to approach. Along those lines, Mozilla is at work on a version that lets you pull it up and pick out menu commands with your mouse, just like a contextual menu.
