I think it is great when you stumble upon something new online that you can really use. For me this happened again this week when I stumbled upon Aviery. It is pushed as an online image editing and sharing service.

The thing I like most about it though is its integration into Firefox with a handy addon that lets you capture a selection or an entire web page and save to your desktop (or place of your choice) with just a couple clicks. You can just as easily open it within the Aviery online service, edit and save from there.

A little while ago I mentioned how much I loved the Page Capture widget, well Aviery can be used on both Mac and PC platforms and has a few more extras bundled in.

iPhone OS 3.0, Design and UI

So the long awaited iPhone OS version 3.0 has finally arrived. If you’re like me and downloaded it as soon as it was available you are by now well aware of all it’s new features and maybe even still discovering them (when you get the time).

Apple has published a well documented list of some of the more popular updates and there are suppose to be over 100 of them. We’re not going to list them all here but the Cocoia Blog has covered them quite nicely.

Who am I and what do I do?

To start with, my name is Justin. You could have guessed that. Every now and then it is good to reassess exactly what it is you do and make sure all who need to know do so and are clear on your purpose and how you can help them. This practice is good as some of us (like me) can be prone to what some call (in the design world) scope creep. You start doing one thing and end up doing so many others, because you can.

So what is it I do exactly?
Well in simple terms two things, Photography and Website Design.

The photography has been an interest now for about 5 years and all started when I purchased a little Canon A75 compact digital camera. It just seemed to naturally progress from there. Photographic services vary from the commercial, portraits, weddings and events. A small sample can be viewed on the portfolio website here. A summary and more information can be found here.

The website design has also been a passion now for some time. Projects can be big or small and are a journey for the client and the designer and should be treated that way. A typical design job can take many turns and cover many elements and not just creating a website. Click here for more information.

Get Dropbox

Not so long ago I wrote about how I share files between the Mac and PC. This involved the use of the iPhone and the AirShare application. Well this changed recently when I started using Dropbox again. I had forgotten how simple and effective it is to use. Making syncing files between the Mac and PC very easy and painless. More effective then using the iPhone, making it one of my used daily apps.

Pricing goes as high as US$20 per month for 100GB but for your average user, the free Basic account with 2GB of storage would be more than enough.

Flock to the rescue

I have always been a big supporter of Mozilla Firefox. This becomes obvious when you look at the number of plugins and addons I had configured within it. Recently however I noticed a dramatic decrease in its load and render times. At first I put it down to my Internet connection speed but then I started using Safari instead for a few weeks. There was a noticeable increase in browsing speeds and render times of websites I was visiting. It was a big change going to Safari from Firefox as there are no where near the amount of plugins available as there are for Firefox. Though personally I think it is a much nicer browser to use.

This changed again today when browsing my RSS feeds for the week I randomly came across an update to the Flock browser (powered by Mozilla Firefox). Now I had used this many years ago and at the time did not think much of it. Well a lot has changed over at planet Flock and the browser is now well advanced and contains many included addons and social networking abilities. Its load times seem to exceed Safari and its rendering of websites is very similar to Safari. It has now replaced both Safari and Firefox on my PC!

Twitter tools and more

Twitter has certainly gained popularity over the past few months with everyone from Opera to some guy called Dave Hughes jumping on board. Considering it has been around for sometime, I cannot recall what made it become the most talked about web app of the year so far. It seems to be popular or at least sound like you know what you’re talking about when it comes to the Internet you have to have to Twitter.

Twitter is without doubt a simple, ground breaking web app trend of the past six months. It has a practical, professional and personal place within the social media circles and is accessible to all with a mobile data or Internet connection of some kind. The interesting thing for me is how far the adaptation of web tools based on Twitter has come recently. Not sure what I’m talking about? well take a look at Smashing Magazine’s post on 99 essential Twitter tools and applications. You may be surprised!

Page Capture Widget

The Page Capture widget for Mac is my new favorite widget!

A simple to use screen capture widget that requires only the URL of the page you want to take a grab of. While on the PC I use the an addon for Firefox to take complete grabs of websites, however I have been looking for one to use on the Mac for a little while now and this takes the cake.

Some features from the website:

- Captures entire web pages no matter how long they may scroll for.
- Easy to use: type or paste a URL - hit Return or click the logo.
- Uses Safari’s powerful and fast WebKit rendering engine.
- Check for new versions by clicking the version displayed on the back.
- Automatically resize the image (default is 50%).
