Sometimes the most interesting thing about a portrait is not the likeness of a face but the way lines and shapes are organized to make that likeness. For the most part I think, I hope, I achieved a likeness of the model in this painting... but more importantly the question is, "Is it interesting to look at?" This is a constant challenge to artists, me included. My attempt at interestingness (not a word, I know) for this piece was to get down on the canvas a sort of lyrical rhythm I saw on the model, a swoop of the hair down to the ear, a line carried over into the half circle of the hair clip, a dark shape on the back of the neck blending into the scarf carrying a line of movement down and away from the face...

The key to being a good artist's model is an ability to hold a pose for an extended period of time. Some are better at it than others. Some models drift constantly from the original pose, some like to talk a lot, and some fall asleep. But then there are those models who can hold a pose in stillness for hours at at time.... not an easy task. I often wonder, while I'm painting them, what it is they're thinking of as they stare off over my shoulder in a steady gaze. Have they perfected some sort of zen like mindset to maintain focus? Or, maybe they're just going over the items they need to pick up later at the grocery store.

Still Life with Turnips

When I lived in Scotland I ate a lot of turnips and potatoes. This kind of meal is often affectionately refered to as "Neeps and Tatties". For some reason I felt silly saying it that way.

Exploring a bit with this one. I started with a warmer base than usual.. a strong reddish brown. I think it really adds to the contrast and mood of the scene to have those hints of warm brown showing through the top layer of paint. It set a nice unexpected tone for the piece.

I've been working on this painting for the last couple of days. I typically paint in one session and then I'm eager to move on to the next piece. It's a nice change of pace to slow down and take it all in. Some things need more time to be appreciated.
