Finally! Netflix Coming to PS3 Next Month

After a long wait and nearly a whole year lagging behind the XBox 360, the PlayStation 3 is finally getting some Netflix streaming love. Reading the official announcement for this new feature—which will begin implementation sometime in November—is a tug-of-war of emotions. Here are the ups and downs of my reaction to the press release.

Not everyone knows how to make their marriage proposals memorable. Oh, sure, it sounds easy enough—get a big enough rock, bend on one knee, put your entire dignity into four little words. But what if you want to do something a little more creative? Gamer Brad Smith had the bright idea to insert his into a Super Mario game and got his girlfriend to play it.

Super Long Final Fantasy XIII Trailer...and Release Date

Settle in and enjoy everyone because three-minute-long trailers are a thing of the past. Now we have seven minutes and ten seconds of awesome Final Fantasy XIII footage complements of Square Enix. You'll get a little gameplay footage and a whole lot of cutscene footage. But don't worry about spoilers, it's ALL in Japanese. I'm still looking for an English version (don't think it exists yet) so make do with all the shiny moving pictures. Personally, I think it looks incredible (thought that from the very first trailer) but the Japanese voice acting is somewhat strained, perhaps due to the overly stiff facial features of the characters? Well, if you're so inclined, the vid is offered in HD (and looks perfect) so don't hesitate to treat yourself.

Anyways, take a look...and notice the release date at the very end...

Fan-Made "Metal Gear Solid" Movie Sneaks Online

Three years in the making, the fan film Metal Gear Solid: Philanthropy is the result of hard work from a committed group of fans from Italy calling themselves Hive Division. How committed? Well, putting together the time and money to put a serious fan film together is an impressive task in itself, but even more so when it's feature length.

Philanthropy is 69 minutes long, and you can watch it here.

[GAME REVIEW] Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2

I swear, these Gauntlet-type games are like ex-girlfriends. You had fun the first time around, but after you were done, you felt like you weren't ever going to need that experience again. But every once in a while a weird craving will come over you, and you end up going back to the well once or twice more. You know you'll remember exactly why you stopped in the first place, but you go for it anyway. At least it's more fun when you bring a few friends along.

Wait. Maybe this was a bad analogy.

In any case, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was my first booty call to the multiplayer beat'em up RPG since, well, the first MUA. Not a whole lot has changed—you team up with Marvel big-leaguers like Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine and the like and go beat up bad guys by mashing like two buttons over and over again. There are at least a few new wrinkles to keep things interesting, though.

The most notable is probably the storyline, which follows (Marvel's big crossover event) Civil War's template. After the Superhero Registration Act is put into effect, hero is set against hero, and so fisticuffs with lasers ensue. Around 1/3 into the game, you get to choose which side you're on (Pro or Anti Registration). This affects some missions you go on and bosses you'll face, along with which heroes you get to choose (no Mr. Fantastic or Iron Man on Anti-Reg, no Luke Cage or Cap on Pro-Reg). It's a decent enough reason to play the game through again, though most will probably have their fill after seeing the credits the first time.

The character list is a bit more eclectic this go-round, with fan-favorites like Colossus, Silver Surfer and Ghost Rider replaced with more obscure capes like Songbird, Penance and Iron Fist. It ends up being a trade-off between the charm of the old familiar heroes to the diversity of the new folks. I'll admit I had a lot of fun with Iron Fist and surprisingly Green Goblin, whose glider makes for some pretty dynamic attacks. There are a few overpowered characters like the pre-order special Juggernaut, whose continuous charge move is a veritable Win Button. The Invisible Woman is also surprisingly—and perhaps over—formidable, with powerful capture and crushing attacks.

There's also a new form of attack called "fusions" that ended up being a lot of fun. Basically you beat up some guys to fill your fusion bar, and then two heroes team up to unleash a super attack. So Storm might whip up a tornado and then Human Torch adds his touch and boom, fiery vortex of henchman suffering. Or Hulk could pick up a slab of the ground as big as himself, Deadpool would teleport over and add some C4, and boom, well, literally. There are some repeats (The Thing + Deadpool = Hulk + Deadpool = Juggernaut + Green Goblin), but there are enough variations to add a thin layer of strategy to the proceedings.

This game isn't a revelation like Batman: Arkham Aslyum, but it is some dumb fun best played with buds on a lazy afternoon. And sometimes, that just really hits the spot.

As far as anybody should be concerned, there's at least one great reason to play DJ Hero, the latest music simulation game from Activision. That reason is the ability to assume the alter-egos of electronic twosome Daft Punk.

[GAME REVIEW] The Beatles: Rock Band (X360)

I can remember watching videos in school about the 60’s, where Beatlemania was briefly mentioned. The images of screaming girls chasing around a couple of guys with bad haircuts was pretty hilarious. However I never understood the magnitude of their music til I was older. The every first full song of the legendary British band I had ever listened to was "Let It Be." I remember hating it at first, because it got stuck in my head for days, but eventually it grew on me. For about a year, I dug through my parents music collection and experienced the Beatles for myself. While I was on the bus acting like I was nodding my head to Puff Daddy and the Bad Boy Family, I was zoning out to Hey Jude and pretending that I was the Walrus. This was my first experience with the Beatles.

The Beatles: Rock Band would be my second.

There is something to be said about band specific games in the past. They always seem rushed, or sub par quality when compared to the home base games. Metallica and Areosmith were fairly good on the music, but offered nothing in the way of innovation. In essence, it was Guitar Hero with on band headlining. Beatles: Rock Band is anything but just another Rock Band game.

First and foremost, anybody who isn’t a Beatles fan, or has no ambition to become one need not bother. The game only boasts 45 tracks, and every single one of them is from The Beatles. Unlike the original Rock Band games, each song is only played once in the stories progression, helping give you a view of the evolution of the band. There are no customization options, as the game feeds you the reality of the band. The Fab Four’s appearance will change depending on the look they were sporting when the song was made, or during the specific performance. This was a nice touch, because it adds an authentic feel to the game. Also shooting for awesome realism is the realistic option, which better playing sends the crowds in such frenzy, that it’s almost hard to hear the music you're playing. Just like it was for the band.

The heart of the game lies in the Story Mode, where you follow The Beatles from simple boy band beginnings in venues like the Cavern Club and the Ed Sullivan Show. By the time you get to Shea Stadium, you really get the Beatlemania feel. The crowds’ reactions are all too real, with screaming girls losing their respective minds, and a few times even overwhelming the police officers protecting the band.

Halfway through the game, the band gives up touring, and begins recording in Abbey Road Studios, where the game begins making is lasting mark. Instead of just showing the band recording the song, the game burst into psychedelic dreamscapes, each one unique to the song. On even the most non-HD TV (like mine) every dreamscape is a blast of vibrant colors and limitless possibilities. Story mode ends with historic concert played on the rooftop of Apple Corps, a somber but perfect way to end the game.

There are plenty of extra goodies to unlock, like photographs and 6 short videos. The game does add a bit of replay value to the Story mode, with a Challenge mode. Challenge mode gives you a chance to unlock more photographs, by having you complete the entire set of songs played at the particular venue, gaining 5 stars on each one. However the game doesn’t make a move to keep the photos from those who don’t play on the harder modes, as challenge mode can be completed on the difficulty of your choice. However I think that true fans of music games won’t just slap the game on easy to complete it. The Beatles deserve a little more credit than that. Besides, the game isn’t about songs that are impossible to play. The game never really gets up to the frustrating levels that Rock Band and Guitar Hero are known for.

The gameplay does stay pretty much true to the Rock Band style, barring the new three-part harmony feature. It lets you grab up to three microphones and triple team the lyrics. However is seems a bit underdeveloped, as it doesn’t really assign who is singing what. Luckily, the harmonies are only for bonus points, so screwing them up won’t hurt your score. Also new to the gameplay is the Beatles Beats mode found in training. It features drum training on 80 of Ringo Starrs’ classic rhythms, but they must be completed in expert mode. Meaning it’s pretty useless unless you’re awesome at the drums already.

The Beatles: Rock Band is by far the standout when it comes to band specific games, but we already knew it was going to be like that. What makes it a great game is the feel it gives off, immersing you into the band, and giving an all too brief glimpse into the story of one of the greatest bands of all time.

[GAME REVIEW] Batman: Arkham Asylum

Pretend, for a minute, that you are Batman. While it may at first seem awkward to imagine to wear a pointy mask and long lustrous cape, I assure you, I think about this on a daily basis. So you're Batman, and you're skulking around in an Arkham Asylum torn apart and taken over by The Joker. You zip up to perch on one of the many high-mounted gargoyles (there to scare the sanity into patients, I think), and watch over your prey—dumb, hapless goons. The best (only?) kind.

You wait as long as it takes for one to come strolling right under you on its patrol, then you dive down and grab the schmuck. As if the chokehold wasn't enough, your cold stare sears his soul long enough for him not to notice you've just tied your cord around his foot. You let him go and give the gargoyle a new pendulum. The thug's yelps attract his buddies as you flee to a new vantage point. With his friends directly below him, the pendulum pleads for them to cut him down, but you're the one who grants his wish. An impeccably aimed batarang frees him to meet the ground. Sure was nice of his pals to break his fall.

In Batman: Arkham Asylum, you can do that. Every part of that sequence I illustrated is part of the gameplay. And there's a lot more to do, too, involving hiding spots, stealth submissions, gliding, controlled explosives and hard kicks to the back of the head. More than any other game, Arkham Asylum really makes you feel like the goddamned Batman.

The atmosphere helps a lot. Though it's rendered in the weirdly-shiny Unreal 3 Engine (used for dozens of games like Gears of War and Mass Effect), the different parts of Arkham still manage to look great in their own kind of way. It also helps tremendously that they've got key players from The Animated Series back voicing Batman, Joker, Harley Quinn, etc. Mark Hamill in particular carries his sizable weight, basically narrating the entire game over the speakers and intercoms, BioShock-style.

The whole game owes a lot to BioShock (and the Metroid Prime games), from the moody vibe to the gadget-based progression to the little audiotapes you find in little nooks and crannies; in a great twist, the tapes are interviews with various members of the rogues gallery. It's this solid foundation that Arkham Asylum builds on and slathers a heckuva Batman coat upon. Highly recommended stuff.

There was a time when fighting games were a dime a dozen. Now it seems as if some of these same games are hardly worth even that. However, SNK has always remained pretty relevant with their King of Fighters franchise. KOF has an extremely loyal fan base, which will swear KOF is miles ahead of its long time rival, Capcom’s Street Fighter franchise. King of Fighters XII has been toted by many as the rebirth on the franchise, but can it live up to the hype?

Ventrilo - A Must-Have For Serious Gaming Guilds

If you are an avid multi player video gamer, you are probably already familiar with Ventrilo. Whether you have heard of Ventrilo or not, if you are not using it, you are missing out a powerful technology!

The Benefits Of Ventrilo

Ventrilo lets you concentrate on your game, while maintaining instant and hands free communication between the players in your guild. Using Ventrilo increases the competitiveness of video gaming by allowing your group to hear everything that is happening. Ventrilo is customizable and very easy to learn to use - even guild members who are not technically savvy can easily use it. Also, it doesn't slow your computer down like some VoIP based programs do. Ventrilo is also very easy to use so players can learn to communicate even if they are not highly skilled at the game.

Full Guitar Hero 5 Details And Set List: Get Your Popcorn Ready!

Let's first talk features: like all 85 songs included on the disc being available from the start. Also Two new modes have been announced for the game. "Party Play" mode, which allows players to jump into a band or drop out even in the middle of a song, and switch instruments or difficulty levels while playing.

The second feature is a "RockFest" mode, which can be played by four players locally or eight online, with several sub-modes that influence how the game is played. For example, in the "Momentum" mode, the game adjusts the difficulty of the note track based on how well the player is playing, with more points rewarded by staying at the "Expert" difficulty. Other sub-modes of RockFest include "Elimination" in which the worst player is dropped periodically, "Perfectionist" where only certain sections of a song count towards points, "Do-or-Die" which forces a player to wait a brief time if they miss a note, and "Streakers" that rewards the player for long strings of consecutive notes.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was a comic-book fan's videogame wet dream. A solid collection of Marvel heroes put into a huge and all-encompassing plot with fully destructible environments. Really, you couldn't ask for more (though we are waiting for DC to follow suit - get on the ball). Like X-Men Legends, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was begging for a sequel. Rather, the fans were begging for a sequel, because you just can't top a game where you can jump from controlling Deadpool to Captain America to Blade and then finally to Thor. That's just too awesome. Well, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 is kicking up the awesome with two 3D screenshots and a trailer (see below).

Cole unlike many people however didn’t die in the explosion. He became superhuman, gaining control over electricity. Cole begins to realize his powers, but event begin that will forever change his life. Cole is pitted against Street Gangs, controlled by others affected by the blast. Behind the gangs are the mysterious First Sons, who Cole has more in common with than he knows.

Infamous is all about choice. Right from the start, you begin carving a path that will either lead you to being a Hero, or Antihero of sorts. The game offers plenty of chances for true choices, as Cole often must choose between sacrificing his body, to save people who start the game caring nothing for him. These actions are kept track by a karma meter. Simply simply saving an injured civilian can reward Cole, or his karma will go down if he chooses to leech their life and steal their energy. The game has many side quests to supplement the main story arch, and every mission, every single action you take determines wither the people will love you, or fear you.

The gameplay is anything but straightforward. As the Game progresses, so do Cole’s powers. Cole evolves from a simple lighting bolt, to some kick ass shock grenades, a megawatt hammer blast, and towards the end the ability to call lighting down from the sky and raise absolute hell on your enemies. Health and energy (which must be recharged) isn’t hard to come by most times. The game has a very real world feel because anything you can think of that has electricity running through it? Does. Cars, stoplights, the train tracks, air conditioners, electrified dead bodies…anything. This creates a million and one ways to kill the baddies. Got a couple of bad guys shooting you in the ass but standing in water? Go ahead and shock the water! Got a small army running in your general direction? Blow up cars around them! Infamous lets you play out all those sick fantasy you can think of.

If this game falls short anywhere, it’s the John Williams like composed soundtrack. While this is a pretty serious game, the music tends to over hype certain situations, almost like you’re in a horror movie. However in most cases the sound of the electric blast drowns that out fairly well. Infamous all urges a second play to obtain both endings, one for playing the game as a good guy, the other for completely turning evil. I wont divulge anymore of the story because you NEED to play this game. Seriously people Modern Warfare 2 isn’t out till November, so you need a game to get you through the summer. The ending holds a twist that would make M. Night Shyamalan crap his pants. Despite the hefty price, Go ahead and pick this one up. You can thank me later.

EA Pokes Fun at Christians for "Dante's Inferno" Marketing

Earlier today, many game blogs were reporting on and taking pictures of a group of Christian protesters gathering outside of E3 to protest Dante's Inferno, EA's upcoming game based on Dante's classic Divine Comedy. The protesters were holding up ludicrous signs like "EA = Electronic Antichrist" and "Hell is not a game," even talking to reporters to explain how the game is disrespectful to the Bible.

Of course, many are quick to be skeptical of the protest, correctly guessing that this is just EA's idea of viral marketing.

nesPod: The iPod Inside a NES Controller

To put in a language easily understandable on the Internet, this goes a little something like this: Yo Dawg, I herd you like iPods, so I put an iPod in yo -- Okay, you know what? I'm sorry. Let's not do that ever again.

RecycledGamer made this custom iPod by putting an iPod Mini into a classic NES controller. The result is pretty cool mod.

Twitter? Facebook? Motion Capture? Xbox Unleashes Bombshells At E3

It came from E3 and it came on strong. Microsoft has taken its proverbial punch at its biggest competitor, the Nintendo Wii. "Project Natal" is full range motion capture; and I mean FULL RANGE. It blows the Wii out of the water. The system will operate with you as the controller. This is among the many other things that Microsoft has added in and will add upon to its 360.

That's right! This new PSP-Go has done away with the UMD optical drive for good! With no more UMD drive, the new PSP-Go is lighter than the original, which also means it will boast a longer battery life as well. The PSP-Go rocks a 3.8" screen, 16GB of internal memory and Bluetooth technology. No UMD can only mean one thing...Fully downloadable games from the PS Store.
