Unconventional Doodles

May I present to you, my most recent artistic endeavor: Unconventional Doodles, a collection of anonymous artwork by bored conference attendees.

I've been collecting these doodles from the various hotels I work in for about four years now. It's a form of found art or maybe even folk art that's always amused me. It's definitely a statement about the corporate world.

I plan on hosting a gallery show as soon as I gather enough material, but please enjoy the tumblr blog in the mean time.

Sustainable dream utopia

Dreams have always fascinated me, and a few nights ago I had a particularly interesting one. I dreamed of a totally sustainable, self contained, Utopian human settlement set among the ruins of a formerly devastated society.

Some massive ecological disaster happened centuries in the past, humans managed to survive and rebuilt society in a better way, coexisting with nature.

It was a very visual dream, so to represent it more accurately, I recreated the settlement using the old SimCity 2000 Urban Renewal Kit that I spent hours playing with as a kid.

The settlement consists of a large arcology structure with a few surrounding buildings, in the middle of a massive crater.

The edge of the crater was lined with the ruins of a destroyed city. Presumably, the old city sprawled across the entire map at one point in time. An asteroid or man-made disaster destroyed most of the old city and left a huge crater in its place, which was overtaken by nature centuries later.

Vanilla extract

This will be vanilla extract. All you need to make vanilla extract is: a vanilla bean, vodka, a jar and some time. I will need it for my cacao liqueur, so I figured, why not make the vanilla extract myself too?

It's organic vodka and an organic vanilla bean, so the price is about the same as buying organic vanilla extract, but it's more fun and satisfying. Also, if I can find a source of less expensive vanilla beans, it would be cheaper to do it this way.

Sea of Dreams 2012 recap

We did it again! Another fantastic Fractal Forest interactive art space at the 2012 Sea of Dreams NYE party.

Rich DDT and I co-curated the space that was filled with interactive installations from local artists, Including Tim Thompsom, Moldover, Drew Detweiler and more.

Huge thanks to everyone involved and to everyone who visited the space. Happy new year!!

Lately, I've been translating my analog video art into the realm of digital media, mainly to provide visuals for musical acts. I've got some exciting stuff down the pipeline: Audio reactivity, MIDI controlled video clips, digitally created feedback and more!

I'm currently working with singer/songwriter/controllerist/guitarist Blair on a live A/V setup. I've been doing visuals so far, but stay tuned for drums and visuals combined!

We are performing tonight at Puissance, at Viracocha in the Mission. Check it out!

Maker Faire!

Sorry I haven't updated this site in months. I have been totally slammed with planning events and working on my own projects. In fact, I am rendering video clips at this very moment. Isn't multitasking fun?

I wanted to announce that I will be performing visuals at the 2011 Maker Faire Bay Area, May 21-22 at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds. I am also co-coordinating the music technology area called the Digital Sound Space.

LoveTech has teamed up with Pulsewave SF to create an interactive performance zone dedicated to new music technology. The Digital Sound Space will feature live performances and visuals from dozens of artists, as well as several different booths where you can meet the makers and experience exciting new music technology.

I will be performing visuals with my new VJ setup. I am using Resolume Avenue, and an Akai LPD8 as a controller. I generated most of my content with analog optical feedback loops. This is a slightly new direction for my visual performance. I have moved away from lugging around a CRT television and an old photo tripod. This new method is much easier and more stable, but still allows me to explore the world of analog video feedback.

Slayers Club + LoveTech 2 Year Anniversary!

For the past few weeks I've been hard at work helping plan the Slayers Club + LoveTech 2 Year Anniversary show, 1.28.11 at Public Works in San Francisco, the most mindblowingly epic music, technology and art event of the decade!

The show is a collaboration between two amazing Bay Area crews, an amazing new venue and dozens of local electronic musicians, DJs, visualists, VJs, new media artists, dancers, painters and a whole slew of other wonderful people.

My role has been to organize the art spaces at the show, and I am once again honored to be working with an extremely talented group of local artists.

The show will feature two interaction zones packed with an array of interactive new media art and technology. Several pieces will be premiered at the show, and other pieces will give viewers the chance to play with some of the same new technology used on stage.

In addition to organizing, I will be displaying what may be the last iteration of my Laser Feedback Lab installation. I hope everyone can make it out to this incredible event.

Sea of Dreams Fractal Forest 2011 short recap

The Fractal Forest at Sea of Dreams NYE 2011 was an absolute success of unparalleled proportions. We managed to create an immersive and engaging environment, packed with unique interactive installations and wonderful people.

Again, a massive thanks to all of the contributing artists and everyone who helped make this beautiful vision into a beautiful reality.

Laser feedback video

I just uploaded a brand new video of my Laser Feedback Lab installation.

Laser Feedback Lab is a video art installation, based on an optical feedback loop, that allows the viewer to explore interactions with laser pointers, pieces of glass or even just their hand.

This Installation was featured at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Million Fishes Gallery and LoveTech in San Francisco.

The soundtrack is was written by my good friend irisFibers, and is part of his "Thoughts Ideas" EP.

Check out a brand new photo set from LoveTech, last Saturday 10.18.10 at Il Pirata in San Francisco, courtesy of our friend Twita.

This month's edition featured the sultry face-melting sounds of Moldover, Henry Strange, Ribotto, William Light and Exillon, as well as four different interactive areas, including: Rich DDT's Digital Jam Lounge, Mzo's Cinema Jockey, Sid Gabriel's Light Nucleus and my Vocal Chaos Lab.

Mzo gave a short talk and a demonstration of Cinema Jockey, a new interface he created for the iPad with TouchOSC. The interface drives software that mashes up video clips and can be used for generating live audio-reactive visuals to accompany musical performances.

I also gave a brief talk on optical feedback and a demonstration of Vocal Chaos Lab. The piece illustrates the concept of manipulating a video feedback loop with an audio signal, the human voice in this case.

I am excited to announce that I will be setting up some interactive fractal art installations at the upcoming Sea of Dreams new years eve event at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco.

The musical lineup is nothing short of epic, and I am honored to be working with such a stellar group of local artists, including: Lyès Belhocine, Moldover, Tim Anderson, Jen Cohen, Rich DDT, Sid Gabriel Hubbard, Tim Thompson and many more.

We will be building an art zone, dubbed the "Fractal Forest" in honor of Benoit Mandelbrot, that will showcase new possibilities of interaction.

New video of Macroscope

I just uploaded a video demo of my Macroscope installation.

Macroscope is an interactive projection piece created through optical feedback. As you can see, the piece responds to movement and allows the viewer to physically interact with the piece.

The piece also appears to exhibit tendencies of a reaction diffusion system.

Macroscope premiered at the Projections gallery show at Million Fishes gallery in San Francisco on 9.10.10.

The video also features an original piece of music I wrote a couple of years ago, entitled "Silk Milk."

Again with another photo set, but this is visual art after all. These were shot by Lisa Ann of Somewhere in Time Photography at the Projections gallery show on 9.10.10 at Million Fishes gallery in San Francisco.

This was the first galley show I curated, and I intend to do many more! The one-night event featured interactive and experimental works in video by Rich DDT, Mary Franck, Jon Ferran and myself.

Pieces included Ferran's projected 3D facial recognition robot "TV Guy," DDT's cosmos channeling "Galaxy Conduit," which has been on tour at festivals up and down the west coast, a stunning video loop by Franck, a naturally occurring "Pythagoras Tree" I discovered in consumer electronics and more.

Yet another wonderful set of photographs by SpaceCat! These were shot at the California Academy of Sciences weekly NightLife event on 8.25.10.

The LoveTech crew invaded and filled the academy with live electronic music, visuals and interactive art including an untitled piece by me.

This was the first time I presented a feedback piece on a progressive scan monitor. The results were very different from my previous work with interlacing CRT monitors.
