Tablo of Epik High in Stanford Magazine

Brainy rhymer Tablo of Epik High is featured in the July/Aug 2009 issue of Stanford Magazine.

The rapper, whose real name is Daniel Lee, studied creative writing at the prestigious university.

Apart from being in the Korean entertainment industry, Tablo also has a book under his belt. The collection of short stories penned during his university years is entitled Pieces of You. It was published last year.

Rain's pictorial in the French Alps & global fan meeting

Rain (real name Jung Ji-hoon) was recently in the French Alps for a fashion shoot for his clothing brand Six to Five. Rain and his crew photographed at Club Med in the South of France using the backdrop of the breathtaking French Alps. They also went to a place called the Savoy Chalet to take advantage of its traditional architecture, modern interior and elegant sophisticated feel. I am sure the European pictures will turn out great.

Rain's European shoot will appear in Elle Magazine's (Korea) August 2009 issue.

Meanwhile, Rain has plans for a global fan meeting which carries the theme "PEACE". The fan meeting will be held at Kyunghee University in Seoul on 26 July, 2009.

HOT BUNS? Why did Kim Hyun Joong had to stand right at that spot and make me think he was promoting Woman's Style Hot Buns?

Truth be told, SS501's Kim Hyun Joong is the spokesperson of HotSun Baked Chicken. He was at the one of the outlets, at a fan signing event on 7th July.

Kim Hyun Joong will also be appearing in his Boys Over Flowers co-star Kim Joon's solo music video called Jun Be Ok / "준비OK" (which translates to Get Ready OK). The MV will be released on 9 July, 2009. So watch out for it! Can't wait? Watch the trailer on YouTube then.

Korea hopes to attract more Muslim tourists

It's not easy to find halal food in Korea.
Thus KTO has come up with the halal lunch box!

Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) now aims to attract Muslim tourists and will tailor-make tour programs to suit tourists from the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

KTO recently educated 40 travel agents and tour guides on Islamic culture. They have also introduced a halal food lunchbox into their tours.

Travel agents in Korea have noted that the biggest obstacle to attracting Muslim tourists is strict rules on food and prayer.

It is not easy to find "halal food" especially in Korea where pork is commonly served in all restaurants. Halal restaurants are very rare in Korea and there are almost none outside Seoul, Busan and Jeju. Tour guides usually take Muslim travelers to seafood restaurants, Indian or Pakistani eateries, or vegetarian restaurants. The travelers don't get to taste Korean food.

Thus, with this in mind, KTO designed the "halal lunchbox". It contains Korean food such as bulgogi and kimchi (i would assume) so that Muslim tourists can also experience the food which they see consumed in Korean movies or dramas.

KTO also recently opened a prayer room at the Tourism Information Center of its headquarters. The prayer room is located in basement one, and comes equip with a compass showing the direction of Mecca.

Hollywood takes on Old Boy

Man on a mission: Will Smith to play the protagonist
in Hollywood's version of Old Boy.

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith will be collaborating in a Hollywood version of Old Boy. Smith makes clear that this is not a remake of the Korean movie, but an adaptation from the original Japanese manga written by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya.

That said, Universal has already secured rights to a remake with Korean producers at Show East, Seoul, the company who distributed Park Chan-wook’s movie in 2003. Now Japanese publishers of the original manga are stepping in stating that Show East had no right to negotiate terms. The matter is further complicated by Show East’s shut down and its people are unreachable to iron out the legal scuffle.

We know Hollywood usually does what it wants. Pre-production has begun and we should expect to see Will Smith kick more butt sometime in 2010.

Old Boy is a dark, gritty tale of vengeance. A man is abducted and his wife murdered. Imprisoned in a makeshift prison for 15 years with only a TV for company, he is suddenly released and has 5 days to avenge his wife’s murder.

Park Chan-wook’s 2003 gem became a cult hit and went on to win the Grand Prix at The Cannes Film Festival in 2004. Read our review of Old Boy.

CHAW - Korean monster movie

Game for a giant pig flick? I know a few of my guy friends who would love this horror / monster flick.

After the Korean blockbuster The Host (2006), we get another monster flick in the form of Chaw (차우). The movie is directed by Shin Jeong-won and stars Uhm Tae Woong (Devil, Delightful Girl Chun Hyang) and Jung Yumi (Que Sera Sera).

In the peaceful mountain village known as Sameri, the community's chief decides to develop and modernize the village. Chaos and fear starts to grip villagers when a mutilated body is discovered at the development site. Further investigation confirms that the victim was a young girl who was brutally attacked by a cannibalistic giant wild boar. Fearing that this might be a sign, the villagers begs the chief to stop the development project immediately. Community chief is adamant and refuses. Soon CHAW attacks again...

Jung Yumi plays a zoologist, while Uhm Tae Woong plays a cop. The two of them are brought together to solve the case of the mysterious killings in the village.

The film was shot in San Francisco and Korea and renown computer graphics specialist Hans Uhlig (The Day After Tomorrow, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Star Wars: Episodes 1, 4, & 5) worked on the cgi. I assume if the man worked on the cgi for Sky Captain and Star Wars, you can expect the action scenes and giant boar scenes to be pretty impressive.

There were two other wild boar monster movies before this - if you remembered Razorback (1984) and Hogzilla (2007)! So if you want more of that, you most definitely want to watch Chaw.

According to the official website, the movie opens in South Korea on 15 July 2009. So watch out for the DVD version soon!

Rain turns down date with Megan Fox

Can it really be true? Apparently, the Korean star rejected every man’s fantasy girl Megan Fox.

Inquirer reported that the Foxy Transformers actress asked Rain out for a date a number of times through her agent when she was in Korea on June 9…and Rain shot down her requests. He showed no interest whatsoever in the sexy lady’s advances.

Rain’s agent explained: “We didn’t receive any calls from Fox’s agent at that time. I don’t know if Rain received it directly from her agent. Rain is currently in France for a shoot so we can’t confirm it right now. If Rain actually received a call from her, we think it was done through other people.”

Also, in an interview recently-aired in South Korea, Rain was asked whether he will go on a date with Fox. The 27-year-old's tongue-in-cheek reply was, “You can expect good news.” ;-)

The Rain-Fox potential hookup started when Rain, back in Feb 2008 said that he likes sexy women and want the sexy Fox to star opposite him in his Hollywood movie Ninja Assassin.

Then while promoting Transformers 2 in Europe, Fox attracted media attention when she said: “There is this Korean Justin Timberlake named Rain, and I’m really on his situation now. I’m trying to fix this up. I'm working hard.”

Ha Ji-won is surprised on her 30th birthday

Fans of Ha Ji-won threw a birthday bash for their beloved star on June 21. The actress who turned 30 (some say 31 or 32 depending on which system you're counting with, I guess) on June 28 was moved to tears when her fans performed for her.

All smiles: 'Turning 30 is absolutely amazing.
Haven't you heard? 30s is the new 20s.'

But before Ji-won shed tears of joy, she spent the day playing games and sports with her supporters. They ran about and sweated, and even ate ice-cream together. It is also reported that Ji-won spoke to some overseas fans in English without an interpreter.

Let's get physical: 'Healthy body = healthy mind.'

The actress had a fantastic time with her fans, and she is all set to do what she does best by appearing in the new film Haeundae, which is scheduled for a July 23 release in South Korea.

Happy belated birthday, Ji-won sshi! :-)

So, you heard it too, right? 2PM is coming to Malaysia for the 2009 MTV Asia Awards (which apparently will be held at Sunway Lagoon, Subang Jaya).

We got the news from 2PM's boss himself – Mr. JYP, who is currently busy touring with his precious Wonder Girls.

Thanks to the Asian Soul’s diligence in updating the public through Twitter, everyone who is worth their K-popped! salt has been receiving juicy revelations on the latest happenings from the JYP Entertainment camp, such as:

1) The Wonder Girls were scheduled to open for some of the Jonas Brothers’ concerts in the US. The girls proved to be so good that they had the JoBros singing, “We want nobody, nobody but YOU (to open for our entire US tour…and oh, Canada too)!"

Allow me to quote the man: “Sorry cuz of the Jonas Brothers tour we can't go to da MTV asian awards in Malaysia. But I'm sending 2pm so don't b too sad!”

Kim Joon & Lee Min Ho at Gu Hye Sun's Tango Art Exhibition

Gu Hye Sun's paintings look like art work accomplished by dipping string into a pot of paint, laying the string onto a sheet of paper, fold the paper in half, then pull! Of course, her paintings are much more elaborate and delicate than what i just described and i don't think she created them that way. But they looked like that to me at first glance. If she didn't use the dip - fold - pull method, then i assume those art work would take up a lot of time - painting those feathery strokes! She's a genius! (Rooster, please insert expert comment whenever you feel like it.)

Gu Hye Sun's Tango art exhibition opened on 01 July at La Mer Gallery in Insadong, Seoul. Her work consists of 42 paintings all made in her chosen hue - the colour blue. Gu's Boys Over Flowers co-stars Lee Min Ho and Kim Joon attended the exhibition and happily viewed the pictures while Gu provided them with brief descriptions of each.

Multi-talented Gu has also published a book of the same name. It's great to see them supporting each other and attending events after working together in the hit drama, BOF.

Ahn Jae Wook's Forever Summer Camp

I want to go to summer camp too!

That was my thought when i found out hallyu star Ahn Jae Wook holds a summer camp in the outskirts of Seoul, Korea and fans from all around the world get to spend 3D/2N with the star. Talk about down to earth and appreciating your fans! Ahn does not make "special appearances" at the camp, but he will indeed spend the entire three days with his 400 or so fans at the camp site! Video clips show that he will cook barbecued samgeoupsal (pork ribs) and serve his fans too.

What do they do at camp? You can read the full review of the 2007 camp on Visit Korea website. But to get a gist of it, here's a brief itinerary...

DAY 1:

Arrival and check-in
Groups and ice-breaking
Cultural performance by groups (evening)

DAY 2:

Outdoor games (sort of like a tele-match)
Pool games (after lunch)
Barbecue outdoor dinner (where AJW BBQs his favourite samgeoupsal for fans)
Mini-concert

DAY 3:

Farewells (AJW reads out love notes from fans)

Why does he do this you may ask? To this, Ahn Jae Wook (38) says, "I've made a promise to my fans."

Ahn has faithfully kept to this promise he made to his beloved fans many years ago and has never failed to hold the annual summer camp since 1996. Come rain or shine, the camp will be held! This year will mark Ahn's 13th Forever Summer Camp and it will fall on 25- 27July, 2009.

It is not uncommon for Korean cosmetics brands to feature male models as their spokesperson. For example, Kwon Sang Woo / Bae Yong Joon for The Face Shop, Rain for Nature Republic, Lee Min Ho for Etude House etc.

New cosmetics brand Bavi Phat (바비펫) have chosen FT Island to help sell their products and attract female consumers. Bavi Phat is new in Korea and the brand is not to be mistaken with Kimora Lee Simmon's Baby Phat brand.

FT Island were at the launch of Bavi Phat's first store in Myeongdong, Seoul on 28 June, 2009. They had a special fan signing session at the launch.

Ha Ji Won on movie Haeundae & marriage

Ha Ji Won absolutely loves her job!

A reporter from Newsen interviewed Korean star Ha Ji Won on June 29, at a café in Samcheong-dong. Ha Ji Won, who projects an aloof and uppity image most of the time, comes across as very polite and has the attitude of a 'good student'. She also seems to love her job as an actor very much.

Ha talked about her new blockbuster movie - Haeundae. The movie is an ambitious disaster movie and the 32 year-old actress stars opposite A-lister Seol Kyung-gu.

Are you worried about the movie (Haeundae) preview? Or are you optimistic that it will do well?

Every day is a happy and interesting day for me. I really like my job as an actor. Right now, I have other things to think about and I am not worried about the preview.

I just want to do my best. Some people are constantly worried about earning more money. I think more of living well and making each day count.

Since Haeundae is Korean's first blockbuster disaster movie, there is pressure to meet people's high expectations. But Korea does not disappoint its audience. I am very impressed with the end-product. You will not be disappointed with the CGI and special effects (such as the tsunami).

At 32, have you thought about marriage?

I haven't thought of marriage - not even once! I'm quite surprised that you ask this. Even though my older and younger sisters are married, I do not think about getting married myself.

When I think back on my last relationship, I feel sad. I haven't been lucky with relationships and have crashed and burned many times. I don't mind younger men. Jo In-Sung and me are doing fine. (Orchid: I wonder why she mentions Jo In Sung. Are they dating?)

The toughest part for me when I was working on the movie Haeundae was getting the Busan dialect right, yet acting naturally. I studied the dialect with the help of a personal instructor for three months prior to filming the movie.

Haeundae will be released on 23 July, 2009.

Dong Bang Shin Ki's MIROTIC concert in Bangkok

It was XIAHTIC!

DBSK (TVXQ) are in the middle of their 3rd Asia Concert Tour - Mirotic.

One of Korea's longest standing boy bands Dong Bang Shin Ki are still going strong. They performed at Impact Arena in Bangkok on the 27 and 28 June, 2009. The arena was filled with 30, 200 screaming fans. DBSK kicked off their Mirotic tour in Seoul this February and the show in Bangkok had the same stage setup complete with giant screens and state of the art sound system. Only the best for their fans right? The fans in Thailand got a good dose of their idols.

DBSK sang songs from their Mirotic album such as Wrong Number and Crazy Love. They also sang songs from their older albums Rising Sun, HUG and Balloons.

Xiah Junsu performed XIAHTIC much to the fans' delight. However, he was supposed to perform it with SHINee's Key, but the latter was busy promoting his own single Juliet elsewhere. Guess who stood in for Key? None other than Xiah's own bandmate Micky Yoochun. Fans were surprised and excited when Micky took over the rap parts in XIAHTIC.

Dong Bang Shin Ki (i just like the sound of their name pronounced in Korean. Of course they are also known as TVXQ in Mandarin/Chinese) is scheduled to perform in Japan's Tokyo Dome on the 4th and 5th of July! Watch out for them!

DBSK are hot stuff!

Ahn Jae Wook sings about friendship

Now this is a blast from the past. Korean singer (and actor) Ahn Jae Wook did a cover of Emil Chau's very famous Mandarin song Friends / Peng You (朋友).

Ahn released the song in his 4th album REDS IN ANJAEWOOK in 2003.

I loved the Mandarin version. Now i love the Korean version too! Check out the music video here!

Legs, legs and more legs! – it’s every hot-blooded guy’s dream and Girls’ Generation is here to fulfil it.

The nine-member all girl group showed off their silky smooth legs as they danced around on stage for their comeback track Tell Me Your Wish (ooh la la).

Pretty Genies: 'Just rub me the right way, and I'll make your
wish come true.'

Magic number 9: 'We don't have one or two genies, but NINE!'

The sexy girls heated up MBC’s Show Music Core programme when they performed the track, which is from their new mini-album Memory. The girls’ performance aired on June 27. Watch it below:

Super Junior at 20th Golden Melody Awards

The thirteen member Korean boyband Super Junior performed at the 20th Golden Melody Awards at Taipei Arena, Taiwan last night. The awards ceremony was broadcast live on television. Did you catch them performing?

Fans in Taiwan were ecstatic and cheered loudly as Super Junior walked down the Red Carpet. On the Red Carpet they sang "Sorry Sorry" for a bit when the Red Carpet host and hostess asked them to do so. This is SuJu's second visit to Taipei. Their first visit was when they attended the 18th Golden Melody awards in 2007.

SuJu performed It's You and Sorry Sorry at the awards. They were dressed in spiffy white suits and black shirts and fans cheered loudly as they danced to the awesome choreography of Sorry Sorry.
