K1 Speed in Ontario, California had a stellar night this past Sunday with a packed house full of drivers all going after a podium finish in the fifth round of the Challenge GP Race Series for the San Bernardino area location. A strong mix of new and returning faces would make up the run groups including some veteran drivers to thrown their hat in the ring for the nights event. Double qualifying rounds would see veteran driver Khalifa Alasiri on top with a fast lap of 51.138 seconds on the reverse-ran Super-Track configuration; not bad for someone that has taken a 6 month break from racing the in series. The rest of the drivers would fall in line just a few tenths off the pace of Alasiri, to set the fields for the main events.

B-Main drivers with a full field of drivers would take the rolling start, green-flag first to get the nights main events going with Logan Manus on pole to lead the field into turn one. Manus, took a commanding lead from the start. Dale Burk settled into second place for the first 6 laps until the field started to catch him slowly but surely and then the battles begun. Alton Edenfield who started 6th on the grid, was charging through the field, passing a kart a lap and was quick to go after Dale who was still in second. Wesley Thu was also there in the mix waiting for others to make mistakes so he could capitalize on it. Once the field got to Dale’s bumper, Alton made the move and took the second spot, with Wesley close behind to fill the third spot. David Gutierrez got shuffled around a little and wasn’t so lucky and ended up losing a few spots. With the checkered flag out Logan Manus would go wire to wire for the win, with Alton Endenfield in second, and Wesley Thu would round out the top three in third.

Closing out the night the A-Main drivers would take to the track with top qualifier Khalifia Alasiri out in front to lead the field into turn one. Khalifia would capitalize on an open track in front of him early on and quickly laid down the quickest lap of the night with a 50.984 second lap time on the second lap to open some distance between himself and the rest of the field. Current points leader Chris Singleton, was doing all that he could to move through the field so he would stay on top of the points championship points chase. Singleton was able to make a clean pass and continue on without losing any time to Evan Sumpter. After another lap had passed, Chris was on Evan’s bumper and found a way around on the long back straightaway and out broke Evan into the hairpin. Chris would be about 4 seconds behind Khalifa, and would come extremely close to catching him right at the end. “If I had another lap I would have caught him,” stated Chris. While all of the action was going on in the middle of the field with Chris, Adam Hixon was on the move as well making his way up through the field from his seventh place starting position, settling into fourth behind Bryce Raygor in third. With the checkered flag out Khalifia Alasiri would take the win followed by Chris Singleton in second and Bryce Raygor would round out the top three.

K1 Speed in South Florida hosted the next to last round of their Challenge GP Race Series this past Sunday with another packed house full of drivers all chasing after a podium finish. Double qualifying rounds would give drivers multiple chances to put down the quickest lap possible and grab the pole position for the nights A-Main. When the dust cleared Michael Apuzzo would take the top qualifier position for the nights A-Main.

The C-Main drivers would start off the nights racing and would see the most action on track with a number of positions changes made throughout the race. The most notable would be last place starter Kaila Fives who worked from the rear of the field all the way up to the front to take the win. Pole setter Alexander Burkhardt would drop to second and Billy Fives would round out the top three on the podium.

B-Main drivers were out on track next for the green flag rolling start and it would be a drag race into turn one as drivers would freight-train with each other for the first few corners. The field would spread out a bit and everyone stayed in the same position as their respectable qualifying spots. The laps would wind down and at the start/finish line Raphael Burkhardt would go wire to wire for the win, followed by Bryant Garcia in second, and Jim Page would cap off the top three on the podium.

Closing out the night would be the A-Main drivers taking the green flag rolling start, with overall top qualifier Michael Apuzzo leading the field into turn one. This would be a full field of talented indoor drivers and it showed as the group held tight to each other for the first few laps. The field would spread thin and drivers would remain in their respectable qualifying positions till the checkered flag was thrown. Michael Apuzzo would go wire to wire for the win followed by Charles Abbott in second and Raul Leoni would take third.

With just one race left to go in the first half of the 2012 Challenge GP Race Season, and the top drivers in the points chase all withing striking distance of each other, it will be a race to the finish for the overall championship. It was a packed weekend at K1 Speed in Irvine, California with the K1 Speed Challenge GP Race league on hand this past Sunday for round five of this six race series. All of the top drivers in So-Cal seemed to be on hand as a good mix of both indoor and outdoor arrive and drive racers made up the run groups for the nights main events. With double qualifying round on the reverse-ran super track layout it would be a hard fought battle till the final lap times were posted. KC Cook has been doing quite well lately having taken the pole for the nights A-Main with a 41.765 single lap time.

With the mains set to go it would be the D-Main out on track first to start off the nights race action with a number of new comers to the race series making up the field of drivers. Right from the green flag rolling start the race action would begin with Peter Suon getting caught sleeping and three drivers would get around him before turn one. Peter won’t be letting that happen again. The front runners Bryce Allen and Daniel Su would immediately take advantage of getting out in front of the rest of the field and put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. Ryan Keeley would sit in third keeping pace with Bryce and Daniel but was unable to move close enough to take away any positions. The checkered flag would come out with Bryce Allen taking the win, Daniel Su would take second and Ryan Keeley would round out the top three.

C-Main drivers would be out on track next and this would be another great race as many of the drivers were very evenly matched across the board, after their qualifying lap times were all within just a couple of tenths of each other. Pole setter Paul Moran and second place qualifier Bob Hyman would battle back and forth with Bob putting pressure on Paul for a good duration of the race but Paul was able to hold his position. Christopher Gorman would show Bob a front bumper but was unable to keep up with the pace of the two front runners. With the checkered flag out on the race stewards podium Paul Moran would go on for the win, Bob Hyman would take third and Christopher Gorman would hold onto a respectable third place finish.

The B-Main race looked to be like something you would see as a possible A-Main with a number of veteran drivers making up the field. This would be another race between the front runners as right from the drop of the green Shane Geivet and Jake Hardy were quick to drag race into turn one with the rest of the field holding tight with each other just a couple of tenths off the pace. The field would spread out a bit as Shane and Jake would go back and forth with each other. Jake put solid pressure on Shane but he was unable to find a way around to take over the lead and ran out of laps before he could make his move. The checkered flag would come out and at the start/finish line and Shane Gievet would take the win, followed by Jake Hardy in second and Michael Dozier would cap off the top three on the podium.

Closing out the night would be the A-Main drivers and this was going to be a tight race with both indoor and out door karters making up the field, including a number of veteran K1 Challenge GP participants from the past coming out for some Sunday fun. Pole setter KC Cook had his work cut out for him with the veterans in the group but he would make quick work of them and pull a hole 2 seconds away from the entire group by the first lap. The race to watch would be with second place qualifier John Tanaka and third place qualifier Nicholas Haye with Nicholas Rebeil and Kirk Meese in there as well. The four drivers would all stick pretty close to each other, and Nicholas Haye would do a great job holing back the hard chargers which gave Tanaka some breathing room to move away from the battle going on behind him. Drivers would settle into their spots pretty solidly and the checkered flag would go to KC Cook for the win, with John Tanaka taking second and Nicholas Haye rounding out the top three.

There is just one race to go for the K1 Speed Irvine Challenge GP Race series and you know the best in the O.C. are all going to be on hand for the championship event to cap off the first half of 2012. The points battle will be a close one as drivers in the top part of the field all have a chance to take one of the top three overall spots. The best in indoor kart racing in the Southwest will be headed to K1 Speed in Phoenix, Arizona this Sunday May 13, as round five of the six race series will be coming to the well known technical concrete course layout.
