About 25 minutes later, the company reported the incident to its Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) to assist in the investigation and containment efforts.

Gelo Gonzales, reporting for Rappler;

Even Manny Pacquiao is getting in on the blockchain action as the boxing senator prepares to launch his own cryptocurrency: PAC tokens.

The main use? PAC tokens are aimed at fans. With the tokens, fans will be able to buy merchandise, participate in meet-and-greets, and bid for items such as the boxer’s used gloves. The higher the demand is for Pacquiao-related merchandise, the higher the value of the PAC token becomes. The goal of the tokens, for the celebrity involved, is to be able monetize one’s fame and to create an economy around a celebrity using blockchain.

The product is the result of a collaboration between Pacquiao, and Singapore-based startup Global Crypto Offering Exchange (GCOX), in which Pacquiao has been an investor since December 2017. In March 2018, the company officially announced the PAC tokens – the first in a series of what the company calls “celebrity tokens.”

Manny Pacquiao may be a little late for to ride the blockchain and “celebrity tokens” bandwagon.

Saudi Arabia is preparing to double-down on its bet that Masayoshi Son can pick the technology giants of the future. The country’s sovereign fund will make another $45 billion investment in Son’s second massive Vision Fund.

The Public Investment Fund, or PIF, is set to make the investment as it looks for ways to deploy a $170 billion windfall it’s expecting over the next three-to-four years. That money would come from the sale of a stake in Saudi Basic Industries Corp. and the initial public offering of state oil company Saudi Aramco, according to PIF Chairman Mohammed Bin Salman — who is also Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince.

I highly recommend that you read the whole Bloomberg piece!

Jordan Robertson and Michael Riley, reporting for Bloomberg;

There are two ways for spies to alter the guts of computer equipment. One, known as interdiction, consists of manipulating devices as they’re in transit from manufacturer to customer. This approach is favored by U.S. spy agencies, according to documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. The other method involves seeding changes from the very beginning.

One country in particular has an advantage executing this kind of attack: China, which by some estimates makes 75 percent of the world’s mobile phones and 90 percent of its PCs. Still, to actually accomplish a seeding attack would mean developing a deep understanding of a product’s design, manipulating components at the factory, and ensuring that the doctored devices made it through the global logistics chain to the desired location—a feat akin to throwing a stick in the Yangtze River upstream from Shanghai and ensuring that it washes ashore in Seattle. “Having a well-done, nation-state-level hardware implant surface would be like witnessing a unicorn jumping over a rainbow,” says Joe Grand, a hardware hacker and the founder of Grand Idea Studio Inc. “Hardware is just so far off the radar, it’s almost treated like black magic.”

But that’s just what U.S. investigators found: The chips had been inserted during the manufacturing process, two officials say, by operatives from a unit of the People’s Liberation Army. In Supermicro, China’s spies appear to have found a perfect conduit for what U.S. officials now describe as the most significant supply chain attack known to have been carried out against American companies.

MANILA, October 1st, 2018 – According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Philippines’ Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, smartphone shipments reached 7.8 million units in 1H18, posting a 5.6% growth year over year (YoY) and allowing the market to bounce back from the -6.6% decline experienced in 1H17. The smartphone market showed growth compared with last year because of the increase in shipments of midrange smartphones. Although the ultra-low-end smartphones still have the biggest market share, the average selling price (ASP) of a smartphone grew to US$192 in 1H18 compared with the US$127 before in 1H17.

“The higher ASP indicates that end users are willing to invest in a phone with better specifications and features to suit their latest needs. Use of phones have become heavier, aside from end users being accustomed to using smartphones as a platform for capturing, sharing, saving content, and streaming videos, engaging in higher form of mobile gaming has also been emerging” says Polyne Gallevo, Market Analyst, IDC Philippines.

The availability of payment options has continued to make purchasing higher priced smartphones less taxing for end users. Financing companies such as Home Credit and Flexi Finance, and in-store retail credit allow customers who do not own credit cards to get installment plans to make payments lighter.

“Keeping in mind that Filipinos remain to be price conscious and want to ensure they get the best value of their money, brands now highlight not only the quality of cameras but also features that make smartphone usage experience better such as near bezel-less screens, high-speed processors, quality speakers, AI features, and long battery life to ensure the customers that the brand is the bang for their buck,” Gallevo adds.

Top 5 Vendors of 1H18

Cherry Mobile continues to lead the smartphone market in terms of unit market share but experienced a slight decline as it faces price competition with international brands and their strong marketing.

Samsung remains at the second spot as it continues its approach of being present in most price points with the J and A series for low-end to midrange and its flagship phones S and Note series for the premium, combined with celebrity endorsements.

Vivo climbed up a notch to third place in a year with its aggressive marketing efforts and tapping of popular local celebrity endorsers in launching V9. Shipments for their Y series increased with the launch of Y71 and Y85. X21 was also launched as the first in-display fingerprint smartphone and the official smartphone of FIFA.

OPPO slips into fourth place as Vivo becomes more aggressive. The vendor maintains its presence through mall ads and promodisers. It launched OPPO F7, A71, and F7 Youth. OPPO also tapped local celebrity endorsers who have a high reach among the millennials and masses.

Huawei shows significant growth. The vendor increased its marketing activities with noticeable in-store display in retail, online ads, and celebrity endorsements.

If you’re a voracious Tech in Asia reader, prepare to shell out at least $10 at month, since the online publication will switch to a ad-based model to a subscription-based model, starting this month.

Readers can still read for free but will only be allowed to access 5 articles per month. Tech in Asia is currently offering an introductory price of US$9.90 monthly or US$99 yearly.

Here’s what Willis Wee, CEO and founder – Tech in Asia wrote;

Dear readers,

Thank you for supporting Tech in Asia. It’s hard to build a company, but the journey has been rewarding. Thank you for growing with us.
AD. Remove this ad space by subscribing.
Support independent journalism.

As you probably know, our business model has been built around events and advertising. While these have kept our business going, we are still working towards becoming profitable. Why is achieving this important? Because the only way we can be better at serving Asia’s tech ecosystem is if we have more resources and a consistent income stream.

With this in mind, we will officially launch our subscription business by the end of September. And because we value our loyal supporters, we wanted you to hear it from us first.

At launch, you can read 5 articles monthly at no charge. Beyond that, you will need to subscribe in order to read further. As a subscriber, you will get unlimited access to all content and 50K+ company database on Tech in Asia. Subscribers will also get a reading experience that’s free of banner ads, as well as exclusive discounts for our signature conferences.

The true value of your subscription lies in ensuring that Tech in Asia can continue pursuing quality journalism, giving a voice to stories that deserve to be heard. Your support ensures we can align our content with the needs of paying subscribers, and not just pageviews – which is a useful but flawed way of judging content quality. In short, your support gives us the resources we need to improve our content.

While change is in motion, our mission remains the same as it has been from Day 1:

Support independent journalism.

We hope you will join us on this journey towards a sustainable future. Thank you for reading, and we welcome your feedback.

At least 50 million Facebook account are hacked. This was explained by Guy Rosen, VP of Product Management and later by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

In a blogpost by Guy Rosen, VP of Product Management;

On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 25, our engineering team discovered a security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts. We’re taking this incredibly seriously and wanted to let everyone know what’s happened and the immediate action we’ve taken to protect people’s security.

Our investigation is still in its early stages. But it’s clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted “View As”, a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else. This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts. Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they don’t need to re-enter their password every time they use the app.

Here’s what Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his account;

I want to update you on an important security issue we’ve identified. We patched the issue last night and are taking precautionary measures for those who might have been affected. We’re still investigating, but I want to share what we’ve already found:

On Tuesday, we discovered that an attacker exploited a technical vulnerability to steal access tokens that would allow them to log into about 50 million people’s accounts on Facebook.

We do not yet know whether these accounts were misused but we are continuing to look into this and will update when we learn more.

We’ve already taken a number of steps to address this issue:

1. We patched the security vulnerability to prevent this attacker or any other from being able to steal additional access tokens. And we invalidated the access tokens for the accounts of the 50 million people who were affected – causing them to be logged out. These people will have to log back in to access their accounts again. We will also notify these people in a message on top of their News Feed about what happened when they log back in.

2. As a precautionary measure, even though we believe we’ve fixed the issue, we’re temporarily taking down the feature that had the security vulnerability until we can fully investigate it and make sure there are no other security issues with it. The feature is called “View As” and it’s a privacy tool to let you see how your own profile would look to other people.

3. As an additional precautionary measure, we’re also logging out everyone who used the View As feature since the vulnerability was introduced. This will require another 40 million people or more to log back into their accounts. We do not currently have any evidence that suggests these accounts have been compromised, but we’re taking this step as a precautionary measure.

We face constant attacks from people who want to take over accounts or steal information around the world. While I’m glad we found this, fixed the vulnerability, and secured the accounts that may be at risk, the reality is we need to continue developing new tools to prevent this from happening in the first place. If you’ve forgotten your password or are having trouble logging in, you can access your account through the Help Center.

Even if you’re not affected, it’s a good practice to always change your password and use two-factor authentication.

The Philippines ranked second to the last in terms of overall download speed comparison out of the 69 nations assessed around the globe, with 6.03 Mbps for its overall speed.

This was indicated in the State of Mobile Video report by the OpenSignal, a United Kingdom-based wireless coverage mapping firm.

After all the promotions err news from Smart, PLDT and Globe that they’ve been investing and upgrading their infras, to speed-up the internet connection in the country.

Read the whole report, since there are other tidbits at the end of the article.

MANILA, Philippines — Wonder ladies and women of the Manila tech startup community will gather on September 21-23 for the first-ever Women Edition of Startup Weekend Manila at Commune Cafe, Makati City.

Themed “Build Startups in Female Inclusive Environment”, Startup Weekend Manila: Women Edition is a 54-hour programme from Friday night to Sunday morning that brings together designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and experts from all domains to transform startup ideas into reality.

But compared to the usual Startup Weekend, the upcoming women edition has an all-women list of judges and mentors. Men are allowed to join, but only female participants are allowed to pitch in front of the judges and to lead teams.

Startup Weekend Manila: Women Edition is part of a series of Techstars Startup Weekends across Asia Pacific this September to celebrate women, diversity, and inclusion in local communities.

The initiative aims to address the barriers faced by women in the tech scene including lack of mentors and female role models in the field, gender bias in the workplace, unequal growth opportunities compared to men, and unequal pay for the same skills.

The winning team at the Startup Weekend Manila: Women Edition will qualify to compete in a regional level (in-person) demo day with other winners of the same event from different cities in the Asia Pacific region. The finals and demo day is scheduled on October 20-21 in Bali, Indonesia.

Aside from Manila, key cities in Visayas and Mindanao – Cebu City and Davao City, respectively, are also organizing Startup Weekend Women.

The event is made possible through the support of Commune Cafe, Developers’ Society, WiTECH, Women Who Code Manila, J.V. Angeles Construction Corp., Beepbeep.ph, Alfox Printing Services, and Ideaspace Foundation.

If you are interested to join Startup Weekend Manila: Women Edition, you can get your tickets through https://bit.ly/SWMNLWomen.

At this point, Apple is leaving the competition behind, when Apple first announce the Apple Watch, the company was an underdog, just like with the iPhone. Apple learned from every release of the Apple Watc, they improve, polish and iterate the product. The Apple Watch Series 4 I believe is what Apple intended for the original Apple Watch.

I just cannot see how other companies can catch up with Apple in regards to features and usability of a smart watch.

Apple;

Apple today introduced Apple Watch Series 4, redesigned and re-engineered to help users stay connected, be more active and manage their health in powerful new ways. While retaining the original iconic design, the fourth-generation Apple Watch has been refined, combining new hardware and software enhancements into a genuinely singular, unified form. The stunning display is over 30 percent larger and seamlessly integrates into the thinner, smaller case, while the new interface provides more information with richer detail. Apple Watch Series 4 with watchOS 5 brings advanced activity and communications features, along with revolutionary health capabilities, including a new accelerometer and gyroscope, which are able to detect hard falls, and an electrical heart rate sensor that can take an electrocardiogram (ECG) using the new ECG app,1 which has been granted a De Novo classification by the FDA.

This will be the new pricing of the current Apple Watch lineup.

Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS) starts at $399 (US) and Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) starts at $499, both featuring the updated design and new health features. Series 3 will be available at the new starting price of $279, making it even more accessible to customers. Along with the three aluminum finishes anodized in silver, gold and space gray, Apple Watch Series 4 now comes in a striking gold stainless steel with matching Milanese band, joining the silver and space black stainless steel models. A new collection of bands debut for fall and all bands continue to work with any generation of Apple Watch.

Here’s Huawei’s response to Anandtech report;

Statement from Huawei and UL regarding benchmark tests

Huawei and UL (creators of 3DMark) have held comprehensive discussions on benchmarking practices this week, and have reached a positive agreement on the next steps in working together.

In the discussion, Huawei explained that its smartphones use an artificial intelligent resource scheduling mechanism. Because different scenarios have different resource needs, the latest Huawei handsets leverage innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence to optimize resource allocation in a way so that the hardware can demonstrate its capabilities to the fullest extent, while fulfilling user demands across all scenarios.

UL understands the intent of Huawei’s approach, but is opposed to forcing the use of a “Performance Mode” by default when a benchmarking application is detected by the device. UL rules require a device to run the benchmark as if it were any other application.

Huawei respects consumers’ right to choose what to do with their devices. Therefore, Huawei will provide users with open access to “Performance Mode” in EMUI 9.0, so that the user can choose when to use the maximum power of their device.

Huawei and UL have also discussed current common benchmark testing methodologies in general. UL and Huawei would like to participate in an industry movement to develop benchmarking standards that best serve the needs of manufacturers, press, and consumers.

To prevent confusion around current benchmarking results, after discussion, UL and Huawei have temporarily delisted the benchmark scores of a range of Huawei devices, and will reinstate them after Huawei grants all users of Huawei handsets access to the Performance Mode.

It’s interesting how much improvement Performance Mode will add to P20 and its battery.

Angelica Ballesteros, reporting for Manila Times;

Cryptocurrency exchanges could be allowed to operate as trading platforms in the Philippines given growing global interest in virtual currencies, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said.

SEC Commissioner Ephyro Luis Amatong told reporters last week that regulators were targeting the release of draft rules by the end of next week.

This is one small step in making cryto or virtual currencies legal in the country.
