At this point, Apple is leaving the competition behind, when Apple first announce the Apple Watch, the company was an underdog, just like with the iPhone. Apple learned from every release of the Apple Watc, they improve, polish and iterate the product. The Apple Watch Series 4 I believe is what Apple intended for the original Apple Watch.

I just cannot see how other companies can catch up with Apple in regards to features and usability of a smart watch.

Apple;

Apple today introduced Apple Watch Series 4, redesigned and re-engineered to help users stay connected, be more active and manage their health in powerful new ways. While retaining the original iconic design, the fourth-generation Apple Watch has been refined, combining new hardware and software enhancements into a genuinely singular, unified form. The stunning display is over 30 percent larger and seamlessly integrates into the thinner, smaller case, while the new interface provides more information with richer detail. Apple Watch Series 4 with watchOS 5 brings advanced activity and communications features, along with revolutionary health capabilities, including a new accelerometer and gyroscope, which are able to detect hard falls, and an electrical heart rate sensor that can take an electrocardiogram (ECG) using the new ECG app,1 which has been granted a De Novo classification by the FDA.

This will be the new pricing of the current Apple Watch lineup.

Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS) starts at $399 (US) and Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) starts at $499, both featuring the updated design and new health features. Series 3 will be available at the new starting price of $279, making it even more accessible to customers. Along with the three aluminum finishes anodized in silver, gold and space gray, Apple Watch Series 4 now comes in a striking gold stainless steel with matching Milanese band, joining the silver and space black stainless steel models. A new collection of bands debut for fall and all bands continue to work with any generation of Apple Watch.

Aside from the display, camera and its alumunum finish, the iPhone X R is technically an iPhone Xs. We can consider it a smaller version of the iPhone X but with its A12 Bionic chip with next-generation Neural Engine, I don’t think we can say that its a less-powerful version of the iPhone Xs.

Here’s Huawei’s response to Anandtech report;

Statement from Huawei and UL regarding benchmark tests

Huawei and UL (creators of 3DMark) have held comprehensive discussions on benchmarking practices this week, and have reached a positive agreement on the next steps in working together.

In the discussion, Huawei explained that its smartphones use an artificial intelligent resource scheduling mechanism. Because different scenarios have different resource needs, the latest Huawei handsets leverage innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence to optimize resource allocation in a way so that the hardware can demonstrate its capabilities to the fullest extent, while fulfilling user demands across all scenarios.

UL understands the intent of Huawei’s approach, but is opposed to forcing the use of a “Performance Mode” by default when a benchmarking application is detected by the device. UL rules require a device to run the benchmark as if it were any other application.

Huawei respects consumers’ right to choose what to do with their devices. Therefore, Huawei will provide users with open access to “Performance Mode” in EMUI 9.0, so that the user can choose when to use the maximum power of their device.

Huawei and UL have also discussed current common benchmark testing methodologies in general. UL and Huawei would like to participate in an industry movement to develop benchmarking standards that best serve the needs of manufacturers, press, and consumers.

To prevent confusion around current benchmarking results, after discussion, UL and Huawei have temporarily delisted the benchmark scores of a range of Huawei devices, and will reinstate them after Huawei grants all users of Huawei handsets access to the Performance Mode.

It’s interesting how much improvement Performance Mode will add to P20 and its battery.

Cryptocurrency exchanges could be allowed to operate as trading platforms in the Philippines given growing global interest in virtual currencies, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said.

SEC Commissioner Ephyro Luis Amatong told reporters last week that regulators were targeting the release of draft rules by the end of next week.

This is one small step in making cryto or virtual currencies legal in the country.

I recommend that you read the whole article, so you’ll know the whole story, but the gist of it is what I quoted below.

Andrei Frumusanu & Ian Cutress, reporting for Anandtech;

As part of our phone comparison analysis, we often employ additional power and performance testing on our benchmarks. While testing out the new phones, the Honor Play had some odd results. Compared to the Huawei P20 devices tested earlier in the year, which have the same SoC, the results were also quite a bit worse and equally weird.

Within our P20 review, we had noted that the P20’s performance had regressed compared to the Mate 10. Since we had encountered similar issues on the Mate 10 which were resolved with a firmware update pushed to me, we didn’t dwell too much on the topic and concentrated on other parts of the review.

Looking back at it now after some re-testing, it seems quite blatant as to what Huawei and seemingly Honor had been doing: the newer devices come with a benchmark detection mechanism that enables a much higher power limit for the SoC with far more generous thermal headroom. Ultimately, on certain whitelisted applications, the device performs super high compared to what a user might expect from other similar non-whitelisted titles. This consumes power, pushes the efficiency of the unit down, and reduces battery life.

This has knock-on effects, such as trust, in how the device works. The end result is a single performance number is higher, which is good for marketing, but is unrealistic to any user with the device. The efficiency of the SoC also decreases (depending on the chip), as the chip is pushed well outside its standard operating window. It makes the SoC, one of the differentiating points of the device, look worse, all for the sake of a high benchmark score.

Here’s the official statement of HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal;

HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz AlSaud acquired 2.3% of “Class A” shares in Snapchat, in a deal worth SAR 950 Million ($ 250 Million) through his Highness’ Private Office. This investment was built up and finalized on 25/05/2018 with an approximate average cost of $11 per share, which positions HRH Prince Alwaleed as a significant individual shareholder in this social media company. His investment in Snapchat is a continuation of HRH’s strategy to invest in new technologies and rounds out an already robust portfolio in some of today’s leading global technology companies, including Twitter, JD.com and Lyft.

HRH Prince Alwaleed met with Mr. Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snapchat, and Mr. Imran Khan, Chief Strategy Officer of Snapchat in 2015, when both visited Riyadh to explore future investment and business opportunities.

“Snapchat is one of the most innovative social media platforms in the world and we believe it has only just begun to scratch the surface of its true potential and we are blessed to be part of it,” says Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal.

Separately, Kingdom Holding Company, which is chaired by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, also maintains a disciplined and diversified investment approach spanning leading market segments and technology companies around the globe. KHC’s technology holdings cover ride sharing (Lyft and Careem), e-commerce (JD.com), social media (Twitter) and digital services (Deezer).

Sainul Abudheen K, writing for e27;

BigDish, a foodtech company that operates a yield management platform for restaurants in the Philippines, has completed the acquisition of Looloo, a web and app-based restaurant and travel discovery business focused in the country.

BigDish commenced cooperation with Looloo on 19 January 2018 when it acquired its assets in the Philippines.

Looloo’s current staff will be employed by BigDish and continue to help develop the company’s platform in the coming months.

Here’s the official statement from Looloo;

Yessirreebob, we’re excited to announce that looloo have joined the BigDish team!

For the uninitiated, BigDish is a food tech startup that helps restaurants maximize off-peak hours while giving diners great discounts. Just like looloo, they’re also dedicated to connecting restaurants and customers. Oooh and we’re also both Philippine-based!

Well, except they’re cooler because they’re present in the UK, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Aaand they just raised a whopping $2.3 million from their listing on the London Stock Exchange!
Cool. What does this all mean for the looloo reviewers?

No need to panic – nothing changes in looloo land. Reviewers will still be able to access the looloo app and website, write reviews, and yes, the rendezvoos are still alive and kicking you guys. (You know how to get invited right? Hint: write a lot of reviews.)

Our goal is still the same: to help Filipinos discover places they’ll love in the Philippines.

The good news is that the BigDish team will be working with us to improve looloo and make it awesome-r!
Thank you and please let us know how we’re doing!

We’d like to thank each and every one of our users for joining us on this adventure since 2012! We wouldn’t be here without you, and we look forward to continuing on this journey together in the years to come.

We’ll be here waiting patiently, wishing to hear your thoughts and your experiences as we move forward to this bright new future ahead of us! 🙂

After PCC approves Grab-Uber Deal, with certain condistions, the leading ride-sharing service in the region release a statement thanking the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) for recognizing the legality of Grab’s deal with Uber.

Here’s Grab Official Statement;

“We are happy that the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) has recognized the legality of Grab’s deal with Uber in Philippines and accepted Grab’s voluntary commitments. PCC’s pro-innovation approach and forward-looking decision sets a strong example for other regulators examining the Grab-Uber deal, and encourages fair competition and a level playing field that ultimately benefits consumers and drivers. As we move forward to become an everyday app that serves the daily essential needs of people in Southeast Asia, we will continue to stay focused on serving the best interests of our consumers and partners.”

Grab Philippines is thankful to the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) for recognizing the legality of the deal that transpired between Grab and Uber last March 26, 2018 and for accepting Grab’s voluntary commitments that considers the uniqueness of the Philippine ride-hailing landscape.

Grab has always stayed focused on putting the benefits of our consumers and partners first. As we move forward to become an everyday app that serves the daily essential needs of all Filipinos, we emphasize our commitment to further uphold our service quality and continuously provide our consumers and partners fair and transparent operations.

We assure the PCC, our regulators and stakeholders that we will act responsibly and adhere to the following voluntary commitments:

  1. Adherence to industry standards on non-exclusivity arrangements between TNVS providers and drivers and operators: We respect the rules and regulations set by LTFRB on the universality of the common supply base of registered TNVS. We honor our partners’ freedom to choose their preferred TNC amongst the current players. Much as we respect the freedom of our partners to choose, we also believe that they should be empowered to decide for their future by joining the TNC they can work with best.  We will extend necessary support to drivers and operators as we always do.
  2. Upholding Service Quality:  Since the implementation of Better Trips: 100 days campaign last May 8, Grab has rolled out activities to enhance driver service quality and welfare, provide better ride experience and upgrade customer support. While we wait for LTFRB to maximize the current supply cap, Grab also strives to improve driver acceptance rate, overall trip allocation rate and provide quick response to feedback.
  3. Transparency of Fares: Grab will ensure provision of trip receipts with clear fare breakdown per trip as part of our commitment for transparency to our consumers. Grab shall also ensure to keep fares within reasonable price range, aligned with the approved LTFRB fare structure.

Grab will work with the PCC in appointing an independent Monitoring Trustee to monitor Grab’s compliance with the Voluntary Commitments. Grab will regularly submit monthly reports to PCC for the next 12 months.

We welcome the entry of new TNCs. Grab was a start-up and like what we were once before, the new TNCs should be given room to grow.  We urge LTFRB to maximize the current supply cap to allow a wider TNVS community. This way, the new TNCs will be given opportunity to offer what they can to all TNVS operators and drivers and further improve the transport industry.

This development will surely promote a sense of community within the ride-hailing sector. Local players deserve a fighting chance in a fair marketplace.

We applaud and thank the PCC for ensuring fair competition in the ride-hailing industry. PCC’s pro-innovation approach sets a strong example for other regulators examining the Grab-Uber deal, and its forward-looking decision will enable new digital industries and startups in the Philippines to further grow and innovate for public good. With PCC leveling the playing field by accepting Grab’s voluntary commitments, we hope that LTFRB will do the same by implementing a standardized TNC fare matrix as soon as possible.

LogiTech has announce that it will acquire audio production company, Blue Microphones. Here’s the official announcement from LogiTech.

Today, we’ve got exciting news: Logitech has agreed to acquire Blue Microphones, a leader in studio-quality microphones these past 20 years.

Their products are used by music artists – legends and talents such as Bob Dylan and Imagine Dragons – so they can create their own distinctive sound in the highest quality.

And that’s not all. If you haven’t heard of Blue’s Yeti and Snowball lines of microphones, you really need to check them out. In truth, you really have heard them … on most of your favorite podcasts, streams and YouTube channels. Because if you’re not using a Blue mic, your go-to internet personalities probably are.

We loved Blue and their products the moment we discovered them. And we’re convinced we can do great things together. Here’s what our CEO, Bracken Darrell has to say:

“Logitech’s acquisition of Blue Microphones will accelerate our entry into a growing market, and offers another way for us to help bring people’s passions (from music to blogging) to life. Joining with Blue is an adjacent opportunity for us – a new way to grow – with additional synergies related to our existing gaming, PC webcam and audio categories. It’s exciting!”

And from John Maier, Blue Microphones CEO:

“Blue and Logitech have a lot in common. Both companies work at being small, fast and hungry, crafting great products with cutting-edge design and technology. We’re an established leader in the broadcasting space with a strong product portfolio. Logitech has design at its heart, tech know-how and global reach. Together we can do amazing things.”

For Logitech, this is a new space. But, at the same time, it’s not at all. Gamers are already using our Logitech G webcams to stream. People are video calling with friends and family thanks to Logitech every day. And in business, our audio and video know-how is apparent every time a video meeting takes place at the office. Joining up with Blue and their microphone lines is a logical adjacent opportunity with great synergies.

We can’t wait to get going!

Check out Blue’s blog for more info: blog.bluedesigns.com/posts/logitech-steps-up-to-the-mic

Either company did not provide any financial details of the deal but according to Techcrunch, the deal is worth, wherein Logitech will be spending $117 million in cash.

This will be great to all and future InstaPaper users!

Instapaper;

Today, we’re announcing that Pinterest has entered into an agreement to transfer ownership of Instapaper to Instant Paper, Inc., a new company owned and operated by the same people who’ve been working on Instapaper since it was sold to betaworks by Marco Arment in 2013. The ownership transfer will occur after a 21 day waiting period designed to give our users fair notice about the change of control with respect to their personal information.

We want to emphasize that not much is changing for the Instapaper product outside the new ownership. The product will continue to be built and maintained by the same people who’ve been working on Instapaper for the past five years. We plan to continue offering a robust service that focuses on readers and the reading experience for the foreseeable future.

Lastly, we want to express our deepest gratitude to Pinterest for being such great stewards of the product over the past two years. With their support, we rebuilt search, introduced an extension for Firefox, made a variety of optimizations for the latest mobile operating systems and more. Our focus is providing a great reading application to our users, we appreciated the opportunity to do that at Pinterest, and are excited to continue our work.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please let us know by sending an email to support@help.instapaper.com or replying directly to this email.
