Martta Niemi and her painting "Gallop"

Martta Niemi's paintings are exhibited in the CityHotel's Art & Design Shop in September. Art has many functions in her life: she studies visual arts in the University of Lapland, teaches crafts in the community college, and is a member of the artILO artists' group.

The theme of her most recent exhibition "On the Land of Fathers" is the early history of Lapland, as there has been human occupation in Lapland for thousands of years. Martta Niemi grew up in Marraskoski along the Ounasjoki river, where remains of stone age occupation have been uncovered. Nearby, there have been rock carvings but they were destroyed in the 1960's when the river was dragged. However some local people know about them.

"When I saw you"

The wild deer and later the tamed reindeer have always been present in the lives of people in Lapland and they are also present in Martta Niemi's colorful paintings, inspired by those rock carvings. Her secco technique consists of a gyproc paste, dried on canvas, and painting with acrylics on it. Niemi likes to experiment and hence uses multiple techniques.

"On the Land of Fathers" exhibition and sales are on in CityHotel's Art & Design Shop Aug. 31 -Sept. 29.

2011-09-01 11:51:02

Hello! I begin as Kaisa's assistant as Kristiina Hoikka's two years are over and she is concentrating on her studies.

I am from Lapinlahti, Northern Savo region. I moved to Rovaniemi in 2007 when I started to study art education at the University of Lapland. My minors include art history, visual art, and photography. This work as Kaisa's assistant is a great opportunity to get practice in my areas of interest, and I expect to learn many things I will not learn at the university.

In addition to visual arts, my hobbies include modern dance and dance theatre. With the new job, my studies, and my hobbies the future looks busy and very rewarding!

I wish everyone a sunny autumn!

The lifeless windows at the Lapland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (Ely-Centre) have got a new face. The artILO artist group from Rovaniemi has enlived the windows with an art exhibition/sales event titled Mixed Salad II.

The artist group was invited by the director of the Ely-Centre, Ms. Pirkko Saarela. She got the idea years ago on a trip to Israel where many offices exhibited work of local artists. She thinks that having art in the Centre's office is very appropriate now because since 2010, the Ely-Centre's responsibilities include also the development of cultural activities.

The majority of the works in the Mixed Salad II hang on windows which makes it possible to see the exhibition at any time of the day. Some pieces are in the lobby on the ground floor and can be seen during the regular office hours.

In Ylläs, skiers enjoy the bright sun on the snow wearing sunglasses, accompanied with their dogs, or scooting around with a kicking sled. In Äkäslompolo, they can occasionally stop to watch reindeer on the trails.

At the Ranua Wildlife Park spring spells more life as animals wake up from their winter hibernation. In these pictures the wild boars, polar bears, lynx and musk ox wade through the thick snow while the otter dips in the water even in the winter. The wolverine and the great gray owl hide in the thick forest.

It is both wonderful to work in and well located close to the city and major highways, as Kaisa's assignments often take her out of town.

The studio has lots of white wall space where photographs and art pieces are hung. At the moment Kaisa's and her assistant Kristiina Hoikka's works are exhibited.

Kiinteistötyö Pasmat Oy has moved across the courtyard to the opposite building. Kaisa Sirén's new street address is Kairatie 62. Other contact information remains the same as before:

 <date>2010-09-09 17:02:28</date>

2010-09-09 17:02:28
AtILOn artists Airi Dohlen, Teija Holopainen ja Kaisa Sirén created a group exhibition about Lapland. The exhibition is in the Bratskov Manor in Brovst, Denmark from the 3rd to the 30th of September, 2010. The Manor dates from the 14th Century and today hosts exhibitions, concerts, and meetings.

The Quiet Signals exhibition was created in Lapland by residents of Lapland and inspired by its nature. The artists maintain that their art "describes our home, Lapland, its phenomena, nature, and spirituality. The natural forces and beliefs of Lapland tell their quiet messages through the artists".

The works show that nature is their inspiration. The peace and purity of Lapland, fleeting moments, power of time and its presence in life, and spirits of nature, speak in these pieces.

What can you create with Lappish materials by combining large photographs, soft reindeer hide, and magnificent wooden frames of old-growth pine? The result is a unique design product.

The topic of the images are winter sceneries from Lapland and reindeer, the useful and beautiful animal of Lapland that continues to provide a livelihood to many families. In the images, the life-size reindeer appear amazingly alive. The bigger pieces come in two sizes 63 x 68 cm and 75 x 59 cm. Smaller pieces are 30 x 21 cm.

These pieces were up in the living room during the Rovaniemi Design Week 2010 and you can now buy one for yourself, for the office, or as a gift from Kaisa’s artgallery. These reindeer hide paintings are also available in the Aarnivalkea Gift Shop at Koskikatu 20 in Rovaniemi.

The very looong painting grew to 40 meters!

 <date>2010-07-15 09:22:59</date>

2010-07-15 09:22:59
The painting workshop, organized by artILO to promote young persons’ art activities, was a success. Lots of people participated, paintings turned out colourful, and the atmosphere was joyful. Over forty young painters added their artistic perception to the ‘Our City’ painting, which kept growing during the day to a forty meter-long piece. The chair of the City Council, Mr. Heikki Autto also participated in the event and encouraged other city councillors to paint their view of the city.

A vivid discussion ensued about the city’s image and public presentation, and what the role of art is in them. Good ideas came up for where to locate in the future the graphite wall that currently resides in Lapinaukea. To save the wall, the young painters and their friends collected a petition to be handed to the City Council in September.

At the end of the day, the very looong painting was placed in the library to dry, and it will be exhibited in the City Hall during the Rovaniemi Festival in September.

Anu Riestola participates this summer in ArtIlo’s Our City exhibition

 <date>2010-04-07 11:54:46</date>

2010-04-07 11:54:46
ArtIlo has invited the painter Anu Riestola to become the group’s honorary member. We collaborated with her in 2009 when she juried the exhibition Kärpästen surinaa (Buzzing of flies) and directed our workshops. Working with her was interesting, challenging, and fun. This summer Anu is participating as an artist in ArtIlo’s Our City exhibition (Meijän kaupunki).

Anu Riestola is a painter living and working in Kemi. She graduated from Turku Drawing School in 1996 (now known as Turku Arts Academy), and is now working towards her Master’s degree in Fine Arts at Aalto University School of Art and Design. She has participated in several exhibitions. Lately, she has produced small works with mixed techniques describing northern identity and femininity. In these pieces, she introduces three-dimensional objects to a two-dimensional surface. She has also created assemblages of objects.

Anu Riestola’s art is included in the collections of Raisio plc, TSN Suomen Gallup, Salo Art Gallery, Vilho Hurme Foundation, and Kemi Art Gallery.

ArtILo’s workshops are busy preparing the exhibition for summer 2010

The ArtIlo group recently had its third workshop with Kristiina Hoikka. These workshops are a fertile ground for vivid discussions and exchange of ideas.

This time we gathered at Airi Dohléns home to present our individual ideas and drafts for the entire group. We analyzed photographs taken during the winter about anything related to the Our City exhibition, and we worked on defining what Rovaniemi really means to us and how we can convey that in our art. We plan to include some photographs in the Our City exhibition in the Lapponica Hall of the Rovaniemi Library, June 2-July 3, 2010.

Did you step on art? –exhibition March 4 - April 21 at Kemijärvi Cultural Centre

 <date>2010-03-11 09:12:49</date>

2010-03-11 09:12:49
Come for a surprise and an enjoyment to Kemijärvi Cultural Centre. A joint exhibition of ArtILO artists shows photographs by Kaisa Sirén and sculpture by Eila Puhakka. They ask: Did you go for an art walk? Did you enter into a forest? What did you see?

Both these Lapland artists are nature lovers and want to exhibit thought provoking and visually pleasing items from forests. Portraits from forests make our imagination fly – what you just walked over on a forest walk is actually a nature piece like one by Picasso’s.

The pieces in the exhibition are untitled in order to inspire the viewer’s imagination. Therefore, the viewers can propose titles to the works according to what they see in them. In the previous exhibition in Rovaniemi, we received over 300 suggestions.

Did you step on art? Was exhibited in Varjo Gallery in Rovaniemi in the spring of 2009, where it received favourable feedback.

Welcome to the exhibition!

artILO artist invited to Jutajaiset folk dance festival in June!

 <date>2010-01-25 11:27:12</date>

2010-01-25 11:27:12
We are happy to announce that the artILO artists’ group has been invited as a collaborator and festival-artist to the Jutajaiset folkdance festival. We are proud to receive the invitation to this prestigious festival. The festival has a long tradition -- this year in Rovaniemi is its 38th. ArtILO artists will participate with an exhibition in the Lapponica hall in the Rovaniemi library. While our exhibition will be in line with the festival theme ‘Our Land’, we also will take an ‘arctic’ look at Rovaniemi and call the exhibition ‘Our City’. The festival takes place June 30th to July 4th, 2010, but our exhibition will open already on June the 2nd in the Lapponica hall and will be open until July 3rd, 2010.

To create the exhibition, we use the workshop method with which we had so much success for the ‘The Buzzing Flies’ exhibition. We have already conducted two workshops and, after the third one at the end of January, we expect to have satisfying results. This time, the workshop leader is one of our members, Kristiina Hoikka, who is studying to become a fine arts teacher. The juror, however, will be invited from outside of our group.

During the festival weekend, concurrent with the exhibition, and If the weather permits, we will arrange an outdoor art workshop open to everybody. This public painting of the world’s longest piece of art will take place on the library grounds.

Kaisa Sirén's photograph of the winter scenery at night atop Ounasvaara hill represents one of the themes which is beeing studied for the "Our City" exhibition.

New paintings by Airi Dohlen at the art gallery!

 <date>2010-01-13 09:49:48</date>

2010-01-13 09:49:48
In the spring of 2009, Airi Dohlen chose an unusual theme for the final project in her visual arts studies: breast cancer touches many Finns. Airi has painted a friend of hers, overtaken by fear and angst, turned into herself, unwilling to be in contact with anybody. Lying on her bed, she feels shame, anger, and bitterness towards what she feels is her crippled body. Dohlen also painted her friend’s remaining breast from different angles. Perhaps she will lose that, too, but we do not know yet.

This collection was previously exhibited at the University of Lapland and is now on display in the art gallery here. Visit the exhibition and look also at Airi’s latest paintings.

Airi’s art gallery now also hosts the paintings she made in the summer of 2009, for the exhibition called ‘The buzzing of flies’. Enjoy the exhibition and hear the bees buzz around your ears.

Meeting Anu Pentik during ArtILO's trip was a success.

 <date>2009-10-08 14:08:19</date>

2009-10-08 14:08:19

The excursion organized on Saturday 3.10.2009 by ArtILO was a success. There were 34 participants and we were happy to see that most of them were art lovers outside of ArtILO. Anu Pentik welocomed us in warm and loving way and it made us feel as honored gests. The participants were very interested in Pentik's history which Anu had told us. She also told us future plans for Pentik, for example that they are going to open a new gallery in Kuusankoski in October 2009. We heard what the source of Anu's inspirations are; traveling to different countries. "People must go far to see near". An example of this is Pentik's mosaic boulevard. Anu got the idea to utilize mosaic in exterior decoration when she visited Barcelona and saw Gaudi's mosaic works. Anu had already been a long time thinking about how she could re-use broken ceramics. Inspired by Gaudi she decided to utilise that material in the mosaic boulevard and her gallery's exterior wall.

We got a chance to visit the new Anu Pentik's gallery, opened in July 2009. The Gallery's ceramic exhibitions change twice a year. The founder Anu Pentik is the artist of the first exhibition.

The Flowers’ Prayer exhibition seeks to inspire the visitors to take a moment to think about the planet earth, the challenges it faces and how best to ensure that we can preserve it for the generations to come. The idea for this exhibition Anu got when she visited Shanghai and saw how polluted the air there is. The exhibitions in this gallery in the future will also always be three dimensional arts. The gallery is on two floors, upstairs you can see The Flowers' Prayer exhibit; white ceramic dishes and two mosaic works. Downstairs you will find an instalation made up of unique plates covering half of the gallery wall. If the customers want they can buy a plate from this artwork to take home. Another plate will replace those which found new homes. The Gallery’s facade features a stunning, eight-metre high and twenty-metre wide ceramic installation. It is called The Power of Posio and is a piece of artwork which tells the story about the North and it's unforgettable nature. Posio has been a big influence on Anu already over 30 years now.

the participants's biggest expectation from this excursion were seeing the factory, introduction to the process of making ceramics and porcelain, seeing the Mosaic Boulevard, meeting Anu Pentik with people who share same interests and get new inspirations and enthusiasm for making art. This was the first ArtILO organized excursion. It was a successfull one but left also something to see for the next time, for example the factory itself.

Everyone enjoyed the trip and many would like to participate in the future excursions. Suggestions for the next excursion were Picasso's exhibit in Helsinki, a day in Oulu, Kemi-Tornio area and visiting an artgroup in Kittilä.

Anu Pentik has designed The Mosaic Boulevard together with Posio based artist Paula Suominen. So far the boulevard is 25 meters long.

In outlet store artists can also find something to buy, like Chinese brushes which Airi Dohlen is admiring.

Palas exhibition Towards Color opens with a public art auction

 <date>2009-10-05 23:07:52</date>

2009-10-05 23:07:52
Art association Palas Lapland is lightening up the October in Rovaniemen with its plentyful joy of color during the Towards Color- exhibition. There are works from 30 member artist involved in the exhibition. And amongst those 30 there are also works from 9 artILO artist who are members of Palas as well.

The chairman of Palas, Teija Holopainen, greeting the guests welcome to the opening.

The Palas- artists have concentrated in colorintheir works and now those which are displayed are the newest of them all; the main theme her eis color and the relationship of the color with the particular artist. The jury of this exhibition has been a Posio based visual artist Paula Suominen.

Toward color! continues the theme in which Palas has been concentrating this year; already during the summer course the theme was color and thisngs that can be expressed thure color. Color expands to many forms and expressions. With color one can express perspective, feeling, atmosphere, space, time. Colors speaks for feelings and reflects and arouses Color can bring you memories from the past as well as bring an inspiration to something totally new and yet unborn. The significance of color in a painting is never minor; color is either warm or cold, pure or lost its saturation.

A number of different color combinations create a suspension to an artwork and awaken the interest to look at it further. And the most important is; light is color.

Guests at the opening.

At left our auction broaker Pertti Hyvärinen receiving offers froma oil painting by Ilmi Huoviala. On the background secreteries Helena Aula and Airi Dohlen.

The exhibition was opened along with a new idea; an art auction. The Palas memebers had donated works to be sold at the auction and the auction broaker was Pertti Hyvärinen, the owner of Hyvärinen art shop. The person behind this idea was Mr Paavo Holopainen, who has done a long carrieer in the travelbusiness in Lapland. He had also made a great effort to attract auction audience in place. There were some 25 artworks to be sold and about half of them found a new home. It could have been a little busier with the auction sales amongst the approximate 50 guests, but the first time always needs its rehersal. The next time we will conitnue to auction thoise works which now did not change the owner.

Lapponica-hall is open mo-th 11-20, Fr 11-17 ans Sat 11-16.

Buzzing of the Flies soon ready to be hung up

 <date>2009-08-19 15:39:14</date>

2009-08-19 15:39:14

The fourth and so far the last artILO exhibition workshop has been held. And many things have found its place in the process. Along with the evaluation of the works we went thru some practical issues concerning the hanging and the opening of the exhibiion.

There are very interesting works to be hung at the exhibition. The great big sun shade umbrella of Teija Holopainen has got a completely a new form. An not only the form also the material has been changed from the soft cloath to a metal hanger. Now we can enjoy views of potatoes while lying on a sunbed.

Now also for the first time we got to see the iron lady by Maritta Jänkälä. And she really does not leave anyone cold. The watercolor series Forest by Ritva Aaltonen was already frames and Maija Vanhatapio had painted charming Lapland landscapes in very many different styles.

For the first time we also saw a " proof" version of Asko Luosujärvi's work. It is a full room height ceramic installation which conveys a summer rain. Very impressive!

The Bird statue by Ulla Hoikka has also gotten a new color and the eggs it is protecting a lovely shape. There will be a nuber of techniques represented in the exhibition; at least ceramics, papermass works, photographs, acrylics, oil colors, installations from recycled materials as well as watercolors.

The opening will be on the 2nd of September at the Rovaniemi public library. Everybody is wellcome! The exhibition is shown untill September 26th during the opening hours of the library.

The third artILO workshop is unifying the Summer- exhibition to a coherent direction

 <date>2009-07-17 17:40:25</date>

2009-07-17 17:40:25
We have our third meeting at the race track again and the picture of artILO's Summer-exhibition is getting clearer. Anu Riestola, our supervisor is giving us again her strong views and questioning our work.

However very first we received a large package of information about artist portfolios and it put us thinking about everyones presentation. From left studing the samples are Eila Puhakka, Martta Niemi, Ritva Heikanen, Maija Vanhatapio and Ritva Aaltonen.

The works of the coming exhibition have developed further again and at first we deceide to look at all the works as one whole. With this exhibition our aim is to give the viewer the feeling of having worked together and that it shows. Anu has the opinion that already now the works have interaction with one another.

Kaisa has almost finished her first piece of a photo collage and the feedback received was very positive. The work is pasted together from tiny pieces of photographs and this abstract summer landscape has truly been quite a pressure, but the positive feedback made her decide to continue more with this technique.

Martta Niemi has developed her summer beach landscape further. It is interestingly painted on a roller blind. The sand has received small footprints and summer sandals.

The small watercolor paintings of Teija Holopainen have a very coloristic and minimalistic feeling. They will be attached to the inner side of a large sunshade.

Maija Vanhatapio and Eija-Riitta Hänninen finally made it to the workshop. Maija has painted strong feelings of a summer storm and you really can feel your hair flying in this wind.

Eija in turn has developed her flower kiosk idea further and prepared many unique and black toned bunches from recycled materials.

The two Ritvas; Heiskanen and Kuusisto plus Eila Puhakka's installation of a room in a home is outlined further. The atmosphere of this room is tranquil but is everything really as it seems to be?

Raija Vanhamaa has painted a lovely picture of a cow with a very strong summer night feeling. Its blue tone brings in mind a meadow on which the cows are pasturing and chewing the cud.

The whole workshop is highlighted by a wonderful lunch prepared to us by Asko Luosujärvi. We started the morning with a fresh summer cake and continued lunch with soup and salad. These workshops are really food for the soul and the body.

There is one more workshop to go before the hanging on September 2nd. Welcome to read the lates news after 2.8. and of course welcome to the exhibition, the opening of which is 2.9.2009 at the Lapponica hall in Rovaniemi library.

2009-07-02 11:26:58
There are so many new challenges when going outside to take pictures. It's like two all different worlds meeting when you compare taking pictures in yhe studio and outside. When you are in the studio you can control all of the lights and put them just where you want them. But when you are taking pictures outside you can't control the lights. You just have to deal with what you got. You can use little flash or reflectors outside and it helps little bit but you can't make sunshine if it's clowdy.

Reguardless of all the challenges I have enjoyd taking pictures in milieu. Here is couple of excamples of my homeworks.

In this picture I have used existing light and a little flash.

This picture is taken using only existing light.

Like before I used in this picture only the existing light but this time sun was shining.

 <date>2009-06-02 15:49:45</date>

2009-06-02 15:49:45
A beautiful Saturday in May and the whole group full of energy and new ideas. The theme of the upcoming exhibition in September is summer and is going strong. We had our second workshop at the race track and what a great place for working it is. Plenty of space to review and work. Anu Riestola, visual artist, is leading the workshops and we went thru the works of each participants. Anu analysed the works at their current stages and gave more advice for their development. We also carried out a very helpful conversation on topics such as what it is like to be an artist, what is one's artist statement, what our targets are as an individual as well as artILO as a group.

During the peronal consultation by Anu a numer of importat poist werw brought out, such as how to simlify the work and its message. How to provide the viewer a clear impression of your original thought thru simpifying the message and the technique. There are a numer of different techniques included in the upcoming exhibition and it is especially nice to hane many installations as well. It will be exciting to see how each artist has developed his/her work as we meet next time in July.

Anu Riestola is our competent, clearworded and fabulous superviser. Here the conversation is about the summer leaves by Ulla Hoikka.

Our chairperson Ulla Hoikka having fun with her bird statue.

Airi Dohlen's exhibition in Gallery Kajo in the University of Lapland untill 4.6.2009

 <date>2009-05-27 18:25:45</date>

2009-05-27 18:25:45
Breast cancer is the subject Airi chose for the final exposition of her visual art studies at the University of Lapland because Dohlens friend had it in year 2002.
In her paintings Airi uses her friends depression and fear when she doesn't want anyone to be near her. When she lies on her bed and feels shame, anger and bitter for her hideous body. Dohlen painted her friends only breast in different angles while she still has it. Maybe she's going to loose it, maybe not. No one really knows.

This topic made her wonder about the most important things in life. What things are irrelevant? What is the purpose of life? What is the reason for sickness? Why me? What have I done wrong, do I not listen to my body? Where can I get help and answers to these questions?
These are the disconcerting questions that are always on the mind of a cancer ill person. The shadow of cancer will follow the person for the rest of their life. There, where a diabetic carries insulin, the cancer patient carries the Grim Reaper.

Women's most common cancer is breast cancer. It is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. In Finland there was over 3770 new breast cancer cases found in 2003. About every 10th woman will have breast cancer. Mens breast cancer is very rare. In Finland there are only 10 new mens breast cancer cases every year.

The prognosis of breast cancer has improved lately due to earlier diagnosis and better treatment methods. At the moment appr. 88% of the patients are alive 5 years after the diagnosis.

 <date>2009-05-27 14:18:58</date>

2009-05-27 14:18:58
Teija Holopainen's latests works deal with the vanishing Northern jobs and professions. Teija has a visit at painter John Court's exhibition when she had her inspiration. John Court has dyslexia and he struggles with the words. He can't perceive letters into words. Holopainen started to think how people with the dyslexia survive. Teija realised she had problems to understand some marks and meanings of symbols.

So she started to paint marks and symbols of reindeer and learn their meanings. Main idea was to paint simple pictures which would open the sign to the viewer right away.

While working on her project she talked with reindeer herders about how they carry out their jobs. Now a days the herders must have many jobs, with the reindeers alone they wouldn't earn enough income. Teija started to worry is reindeer herding a vanishing professional skill? Are there in the future any herders left? Teija will continue painting this project of Arctic Professions after the exhibition.

Kaisa’s assistant Heli Herttua’s studies in VVI have progressed.

 <date>2009-05-13 18:05:24</date>

2009-05-13 18:05:24
My studies in VVI started on December 2008 in Tampere. Now first spring is gone and summer is almost here. It means finally I can go and take outdoors pictures. In our indoors season we learned how to took profile, object, passport, high key, low key pictures and our calender project will last all year.

This flower picture is a sample from a high key picture. It’s challenging to do high key because you can use only rgb scale’s brighter end. You can have only a couple of darker spots.

It’s always so exciting to go to Tampere and learn something new although when I come back my head is filled with ideas for homeworks and new information. It takes a couple of days to get information in right places. Homeworks need lots of practise and you have to do the same pictures over and over again to learn them well. I wait for enthusiastically for the summer and summer homeworks along with challenges which they bring.

Here is a couple of excamples of my homeworks.

Here is another high key picture. It’s so much challenging to do a high key picture with a person than an object. Especially if your model has dark hair. You must be careful not to burn whole the picture when you try to make the dark hair lighter.

This Buddha present a low key picture. In the low key pictures you can only use rgb scale's darker end and just a couple of bright spot.

In this picture I have used just basic lighting with an object.

Anu Riestola is supervising upcoming ArtILO exhibition, based on 4 workshops

 <date>2009-04-28 15:14:17</date>

2009-04-28 15:14:17
In September 2009 ArtILO will organize a joint exhibition at the Rovaniemi library Lapponica hall. The theme of the exhibition is summer. Works are made from materials no longer in use.

This time the exhibition is based on a very new way of working. ArtILO has invited visual artist Anu Riestola, ex regional artis, as a jury. Anu's duty has started well in advance in a form of four workshops which she will supervise as part of the working process. In each workshop the works of each artist is evaluated and discussed in order to direct the exhibition to a unison harmony. Anu Riestola was immediately excited about this working process because it is a new way to build an exhibition. The first workshop has aldiscussing and interactive way. She is giving each artist personal feedback of their works.

The exhibition in summer theme consists of many different techniques. There will be watercolor- and oilpaintings but also compositions by made together several artists cobining various techniques in one environmental work. Now during the working process Riestola is hoping to see a number of sketches by each artist even though the work.

The next workshop is held at the end of May and there not only do we have a look at the works and sketcehs at that stage but also work and refine them further under Anu's supervision.

It will be exciting to see for example how the atmosphere of summer is developing in the environmental work Spirit of a Home. And are there already some watercolor paintings ready which can be viewed undert the parasol! The working process also inludes taht each artist keeps a working diary and these will be viewed at the workshop. The workshops are also photographed and documented for future use and sharing the experiences and the process with other artist.

Welcome to the sho in Rovaniemi in September 2009!

Kaisa’s assistant Heli Herttua starts photography studies in Tampere

 <date>2008-12-28 20:16:19</date>

2008-12-28 20:16:19
Heli Herttua, 21yrs, has been accepted to an apprenticeship contract program and started 2 year photography studies program at Visuaaliviestinnän Instituutti in Tampere. There will be 3 days of studies in Tampere once a month and the rest of the time she continues working as an assistant to Kaisa.

Heli has already studied the field during one year while attending a media assistant studies in Haapavesi. Now she is eagerly continuing with the new studies. In comparison to the earlier school the situation is quite different now, since Heli has already been working as an apprrentice with Kaisa for 8 months. During this time she has learnt a lot and gained expereince in lighting, exposure, photoshop and the photography itself amongst others. The working time has brought a ot of expereinces but it is difficult for Heli to say which has been the most important lesson. At least untill now there has not been any negative surprises in the job and this field. Untill now Heli’s duties have been working with Photoshop, assisting during assignments, taking care of the postcard and picturesales, updating the internet pages and many kinds of tasks with the picture archives. Heli feels that she has learnt the most in picture manipulation with Photoshop.

What fascinates Heli in photography is the possibility of telling a story with the image. And perpetuating an important moment. Heli has been interested in photography since a small child and hs got her own camera at the age of 7. Since then a camera has been always along. Especially her mother was ” excited” about four rolls of film with nothing but pictures of ducks.

From the new studies Heli expects to learn a lot of new things, that the level of teaching is high and clear and the teatchers have done their lessons in detail and with good planing. Heli’s target is to work as a professional photographer one day, but it is still early to define what type of photograhy she will do. Now while studing and working on an apprenticeship contract she expects to be able to aply into practice the theories and tasks given at school.

From now on you can follow Heli’s studies and development in the news; we will publish a new story after each school assignment has been completed.

Kristiina Hoikka has started the Master's programme in visual art education.

 <date>2008-10-08 13:57:51</date>

2008-10-08 13:57:51
Arts have always been very close to Kristiina’s heart. She has realised life isn’t life without paintig and doing something with your hands. Kristiina has been studying ceramics, drawing and making art from pulp in Kajaani at Kaukametsä institute.

Because Kristiina was born in Rovaniemi was The University of Lapland the only place where she wanted to study. The University of Lapland was already a familiar place for her as she had studied approbatur of arts in the Open University between years 2004-2005, and also offering the Master’s programme in visual art education. Her move back to Rovaniemi was also made easier since the art group of Artilo is located there.

After the entrance exams her feelings were very tensed. When she recived the results of the exam, Kristiina and her friends discussed thru different options – accepted or not accepted - before she opened the letter. As she was accepted to the University of Lapland everything seemed to be more glamours and eagerly she waited for the studies to start.

Expectations for the school were very high. Kristiina has always wondered how to teach visual arts. Her intrest has been also to learn how to communicate the joy of self expression. Studies bring you more information and tecniques which to use in making your art. It’s fascinating to learn more. You can’t ever be too educated. Kristiina believes that all her expectations will come true. After two months of studies she has learned lots of new things and happily wait what the future brings.

ArtILO artist have set up a new sales exhibition in Levi at Lapland Hotel Sirkantähti. This exhibition is continuation of the good co-operatioon we have started about a year ago in Rovaniemi at Lapland Hotel Sky Ounasvaara.

This networking together with the hotel chain is giving us an unique possibility to reach a greater audience. And also the audience who normally would not visit art exhibitions or galleries. The co-operation at Sky has mutually very successful and the in Levi is for the same.

At Sky we have also had quite a few sales and the works have found a new home all over the world. At the same time the hotel has easily got new dimensions for thier interior decor.

In the exhibition in Levi there are about 45 works from 8 different artists. The works represent a wide range of techniques from photographs to fabric paintings and pastel paintings to acrylics. let alone the traditional oil paintings and textile weavings. The artists behind the levi exhibition are ArtILO members Ritva Aaltonen, Airi Dohlen, Ulla Hoikka, Ritva Kuusisto, Malla Nenonen, Eila Puhakka, Kaisa Sirén ja Maija Vanhatapio. The agreement has been made for the year 2008.

And still during this winter the co-operation widens more as next we hang an exhibit in Lapland Hotel Äkäs in Ylläs.

The well controlled and peaceful look of the exhibition is Lapin Yliopiston taiteiden tiedekunnasta. Hallittu ja rauhallinen kokonaisuus onkin credited to the experience Mr Engblom has in putting exhibitions together, and we are very greatful to his assistance.

ArtILO and Lapland Hotels into co-operation

 <date>2007-01-31 17:23:59</date>

2007-01-31 17:23:59
Our art group ArtILO is keeping up with the good pace. We have started a unique co-operation with Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara in Rovaniemi. The result of the co-work is that Sky Ounasvaara has pointed a lot of space to hang up our art works and make there a permanent exhibition at the hotel. This is for us artists a great opportunity since the hotel has an international clientele year round and is a popular place to hold meetings for the locals.

The idea for this changing but permanent exhibition rose from discussions between hotel manager Taru Tahvanainen and ArtILO member Ritva Kuusisto. Tahvanainen was looking for versatile art done by Lappish artists which on the other hand would be harmounious together and fit the interior design of the hotel. Because our group is fairly large and we make art with several techniques the idea proceeded to co-operation. There is plenty to choose from! In addition to previous Taru was hoping that the exhibition will change time to time and so bring a fresh look to the hotel.

Th first sales exhibition has already been hung at the end of January and next time it will be renewed in May for the summer clients. Welcome to see ArtILO art at Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaaralle!
