Schneier confuses life with death [Stoat]

Steve Schneier (security expert and tee-shirt provider to the cognoscenti) has a post in which he pokes at the massive costs of counter-terrorism, apparently out of all proportion to the threat. However, he has a bizarrely wrong calculation: I quote:

The death toll of all these is... sixteen deaths in the U.S. to terrorism in the past ten years. Given the credible estimate that we've spent $1 trillion on anti-terrorism security (this does not include our many foreign wars), that's $62.5 billion per life saved. Is there any other risk that we are even remotely as crazy about?

I'm happy with the last sentence, but not the one before it: no Steve, that is $62.5 billion per person killed not per person saved. We've got no idea form the info you quote how many people were saved, so we can't do the calculation you want to.

This obvious point is made in the comments, and SS even answers there, apparently failing to get the point. Certainly, he has updated the post several times, but still hasn't corrected this rather basic blunder.

Monitoring ground-level ozone from space

Satellite views of the Midwestern United States show that ozone levels above 50 parts per billion (ppb) along the ground could reduce soybean yields by at least 10 percent, costing more than $1 billion in lost crop production, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists.

Allow us a moment to revisit a video game classic... Sonic, boom! Our Guile moment is inspired by General Motors, which has released video of the compact Chevrolet Sonic undergoing crash testing. The diminutive hatchback is loaded up with a healthy heaping of safety technology that ranges from a plethora of sensors to high-strength steel.

The body of the Sonic utilizes the heavy-duty steel in the frame rails, around the door openings and roof supports. In fact, high-strength steel is used throughout 60 percent of the body structure. Couple that with ten airbags, and the interior of the Sonic is a relatively safe place to be in the event of an accident. All of those airbags are controlled by a system of sensors that also monitor the angle of travel, speed and points of impact.

hypnosec tips a bit of Apple news from late last week that got overshadowed by the headlines about Steve Jobs. According to El Reg, "People logging in to Macs running OS X 10.7, aka Lion, can access restricted resources using any password they want when the machines use a popular technology known as LDAP for authentication. Short for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, LDAP servers frequently contain repositories of highly sensitive enterprise data, making them a goldmine to attackers trying to burrow their way into sensitive networks." Initial reports about this bug cropped up less than a week after Lion was released.

Double amputee Oscar Pistorius sprinted his way into the record books by qualifying for the 400 meters semi-finals at the World Athletic Championships in Korea. Yes, "the South African, the first amputee athlete to race in the competition, finished third in his heat in 45.39 seconds." Video after the break. Click here for more pictures.

The 24-year-old, who had both legs amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old, came on strongly in the second half of the race to go through comfortably. Debate has raged this week over whether Pistorius should be allowed to compete with some arguing his carbon fibre blades give him an advantage.

Lion Hater Becomes Lion Lover

Okay, so my first experience with Lion was a disaster. -Broken Wifi -Very sluggish/laggy performance in Finder -Safari an experience in beach-ball watching -Using Handbrake or other CPU-intensive apps bogged my iMac down so bad I had to restart. These symptoms were the same when I installed over Snow Leopard, and also when I did a clean install. I even went so far as to get a refund from Apple. I'll admit that part was a bit petulant, but I was angry that Apple had released an OS that was so mangled (on my computer). When 10.7.1 came out I was tempted to retry, so I waited a week or so and then did a Time Machine backup of my Snow Leopard setup, in case I was disappointed again. However, I was not disappointed at all with Lion 10.7.1! In fact, my mid-2007 iMac (2GB RAM) has never run better! Everything on the machine runs quicker (and yes, snappier). Safari is running like a dream, and I've ditched Chrome browser for now because Safari is finally every bit as quick. In the spirit of trying out new things, I've started using Launcher instead of going to the Applications section of a Finder window. I can't say Launcher is any better, but it's really no worse. Mission Control is fine with me, too, although not being a power user, I don't use it much. So, since I came on these forums to trash the initially broken version of Lion, I come here to humbly say that the Lion that now runs on my Mac is a definite improvement over Snow Leopard (except for missing Front Row!) I'm now a Lion lover. :D
