Firefox 3.0 has been hanging around for a while, but I haven’t got it. Why? Because I’m using a free(libre) alternative known as IceCat.

Started by GNU, IceCat is an open-source browser based on Mozilla Firefox but in a far purer form. IceCat has removed any reference to non-free software such as Adobe Flash and replaced it with free(libre) software like GNU’s own Gnash.

They’ve gone even further, integrating new security features into IceCat. The one that I encountered most occurs “when sites rewrite the host name in links redirecting the user to another site, mainly to “spy” on clicks. When this behavior is detected, IceCat shows a message alerting the user.” Another one, which I encountered less, results as “some sites refer to zero-size images on other hosts to keep track of cookies. When IceCat detects this mechanism it blocks cookies from the site hosting the zero-length image file. (It is possible to re-enable such a site by removing it from the blocked hosts list.)”

So when will the third version release? While their is no exact release date, you can expect it somewhere between July 4th and July 9th.

Fedora 9

Fedora 9, aptly named “Sulphur”, has been like breathing the toxic substance in my personal experience. I have therefore reverted back to Fedora 8 where I will stay until Fedora X is released. To those wanting a guide for the BCM4318, follow the one for Fedora 8. There isn’t much that is different in the set up.

So what made Fedora 9 so bad? The answer lies with their secret admirer, Google. Fedora used so much beta and possibly alpha software that they went from cutting edge to bleeding edge. This disabled paramount loads of functionality on many computers. Xorg was probably the biggest problem of them all and could only be remedied by downgrading to the version found in Fedora 8.

I deeply apologize for my scarce appearances and being unable to join some of you on the next version of Fedora, but maybe the 10th release will fix all the damage done by the 9th.

Well, I got wireless to work in F9, but because of mouse problems and graphics problems reverted back to F8. The suspense of the new release and the new features I had managed to experience drew me back to Fedora 9. I’ll post the guide for the wireless and a guide for fixing the problems I’ve had when all is running swimmingly.

In other news, my parent’s computer recently went down. After following all of Hewlett Packard’s directions on their troubleshooting page, I found that the motherboard was bad. However, being one who collects old parts, I hooked up a spare power supply and found that the computer worked flawlessly. Now my parents are the proud owners of a new Antec power supply.

Fedora 9 on hold

While have gotten the wireless working on F9, I’ve had some issues with the color depth and touchpad. As a result I’ve digressed and am using F8 until someone more experienced can come up with a fix. Meanwhile, I’m going to dualboot gNewSense. It has the some of the same goals as the Fedora Project so I want to check it out too!

As far as the wireless guide is concerned, one must click some different buttons in the service dialog and add a new Wireless card in the network configuration(System>Administration>Network). The last task needs to be performed before the reboot.

Unfortunately, due to some bad burns and poor installation choices, it took me longer to get online than initially anticipated. I have noticed some minor differences in the way things are done setting up the wireless. If everything works well(I have yet to test the wireless), I’ll make the changes and post the new guide.

Fedora 9, Geneva Bible, and DVD-R Media

Beginning this post out of order, I’m about to let you know what I received in the mail yesterday. I, being a Christian, was rather excited to find that the 1599 Geneva Bible had been restored and purchased one some time ago. I received it yesterday and found that during production the page for Numbers 16 had gotten folded before the standard stamping done on the bibles. Since none of the text was messed up, I just had my mother cut off the excess with scissors. As a result, I started reading Numbers 16, assuming it was instructed of God.

I have Fedora 9 successfully burned to DVD and am installing as we speak. I initially tried to burn it on HP media only to find that my neither my notebook nor my mother’s would read it(Ironically she has a Compaq). I managed to find some Memorex DVD-Rs that worked perfectly though. I have done some research and plan to buy Taiyo Yuden media next time since it is believed to be the best on the market.

I anticipate being wireless by tonight and having a guide up by the morning.

The release is nigh

No stranger to updating Fedora, I’ll be copying my personal files over to my spare drive tonight. While it is not exactly necessary to start fresh, I’d like to so I can experience it in all of it’s new undisturbed glory. While I’d like to be able to get it at midnight, historically Fedora has been released around 7-9am(central time).

Fedora 9 and 120GB HDD

I’m going to be getting Fedora 9 when it releases on the 13th. I’ll have it installed on the 14th on my new 120GB drive that I bought(I almost got a 32GB SSD) a few days ago. I hope to have a tutorial up by the sunset of the 15th(In Tennesse).

If the process is identical to the process for Fedora 8(I’ll try this first), I’ll rename the current document to include Fedora 9.

I’m rewriting some of the code for my website and will be testing it on my Usrbars page. It is likely that the page may end up being unreachable for a few minutes at a time. I’ll let you know when I’m all done playing.
